I had done during the past months, and I found I had done nothing to improve my grades.I thought I should work harder.
After that,I paid more attention to the teachers’ talking in the classes, and I asked my teachers or my classmates when I didn’t understand something.I studied very late at night when I met with difficult problems. Most of all,I came to understand the importance of taking notes in class. As a result,I did better in some tests.
About three months later, the most important test came at the end of the term. This time,I stood out not only in my class but also in the grade. From then on,I have tried to do my best when I do something because I know if I want something,I should work hard for it.

It is true that people with better education are usually able to get better paying jobs.In other words, they have more chances to choose a good job while people with little or n o education don’t.It seems that the purpose of education is to make people get jobs. But this isn’t accepted by all people.
Some people may think that a person should spend the best years of his life to get education only for a way of living. This was probably one of the earliest reasons of education. In fact,if education is just a way of making a living, people don’t need to
spend so much time in school.People can get education for a living in a short time.Subjects like history and geography need not be taught to everyone.Even languages and mathematics need not be taught in detail, either. Here it is clear that education is much more than teaching a man to get a way of living.
Education is well-rounded and it is mainly for improving a man.It is not only to teach him to speak, read and write, but also to develop his creative thinking and other abilities. After that,it is to make him a wise man and thankfully enjoy the achievements of cation is to make a man lead a better cated people are expected to be able to listen to good music, read good books, watch plays, and most of all, take an interest in the world.
I would agree that making a good living is an important reason for education, but certainly not the most important or the main reason.
24.People with little education usually .
A.spend a long time in school
B.have a good chance to get a job
C.spend the best years to choose jobs

A.accept education as a way of living
B.take an interest in the whole world
C.develop their abilities to make plays
D.learn subjects like languages and maths

cation should make a man improve
B.people can get education in a short time
C.people should be able to get better paying jobs
D.all subjects are so important for a way of living

By day,Robert Titterton is a lawyer. In his spare time though he goes on stage beside pianist Maria Raspopova—not as a musician but as her page turner.“I’m not a trained musician, but I’ve learnt to read music so I can help Maria in her performance.”
Mr Titterton is chairman of the Omega Ensemble but has been the group’s official page turner for the past four years. His job is to sit beside the pianist and turn the pages of the score so the musician doesn’t have to break the flow of sound by doing it themselves. He said he became just as nervous as those playing instruments on stage.
“A lot of skills are needed for the job.You have to make sure you don’t turn two pages at once and make sure you find the repeats in the music whe n you have to go back to the right spot.”Mr Titterton explained.
Being a page turner requires plenty of practice. Some pieces of music can go for 40 minutes and require up to 50 page turns, including back turns for repeat passages.Silent onstage communication is
key,and each pianist has their own style of “nodding” to indicate a page turn which they need to practise with their page turner.
But like all performances, there are moments when things go wrong.“I was turning the page to get ready for the ne the turn caused the spare pages to fall off the stand,”Mr Titterton said,“Luckily I was able to catch them and put them back.”
Most page turners are piano students or up-and-coming concert pianists, although Ms Raspopova has once asked her husband to help her out on stage.
“My husband is the worst page turner,”she laughed.“He’s interested in the music, feeling every note, and I have to
say:‘Turn, turn!’Robert is the best page turner I’ve had in my entire life.”

Grown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since.A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away.He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son.A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins with“Twinkle, twinkle, little star” or remember the story of “Cinderella” or “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”.
One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows:Once we have learned something, additional learning trials increase the length of time we will remember it.
In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them.We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn.
The multiplication tables (乘法口诀表) are an exception to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood.
The law of overlearning eming (突击学习) for an eay result in a passing grade,is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course.By cramming,a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned.A little overlearning,on the other hand,is really necessary for one’s future development.
32.What is the main idea of paragraph 1?
A.People remember well what they learned in childhood.
B.Children have a better memory than grown-ups.
C.Poem reading is a good way to learn words.
D.Stories for children are easy to remember.
33.The author explains the law of overlearning by .
A.presenting research findings
B.setting down general rules
C.making a comparison
ing examples
34.According to the author, being able to use multiplication tables is .

D.a basic step towards advanced studies
35.What is the author’s opinion on cramming?

When I spent the last summer with my Grandmother in Warwick,New York, she sent me down to the grocery store with a long shopping list.Staring at all the items on the list,I wondered how I could find anything on the packed shelves around me.But she insisted.
I walked up to the counter.Behind it was a lady like no one I’d ever seen.Thick glasses rested on the tip of her nose.Gray hair was piled on her head.
“Excuse me,”I said.She looked up.
“You’re that Clements kid,”she said.“I’m Miss e closer and let me get a l ook at you.”She pushed her glasses up her nose.“I want to be able to describe you to the policeman if something goes missing rom the store.”
“I’m not a thief!”I was shocked.I was too young to be a thief!
“Maybe not,but I can tell you’ve got potential.”She went back to reading her newspaper.
“I need to get these,” I said, holding up my list.“So?Go get them.”She ignored my need of a favor.“There’s no one here ee and I’m not your servant,so I suggest you start looking for the things on that list.”
The store was a puzzle to a seven-year-old,and it seemed to hold all the goods in the world.I complained about this task Grandma had set me to do while trying to find all the items on my list.It
took me an hour and a half to do it,and the mean lady behind the counter didn’t even bother to look at me once.
I visited Miss Bee a couple of times a week that
summer.Sometimes she sold me an old newspaper instead of the latest one.Sometimes she overcharged me and didn’t seem embarrassed when I pointed it out.Going to the store was more like going into battle, but I survived.By summer’s end the shopping trip that had once taken me an hour was done in 15 minutes. The morning I was to return to Brooklyn,I stopped in to get a soda.
