As I did not have a boyfriend, I decided to treat myself on Valent ine’s Day.
I was on my way to the supermarket when I saw an old man。
He had a walking stick and could only walk a few steps before he tired. He tried to hold a tree and almost fell down. I went to him and offered to take him home。
He had a few other items to collect in the town centre, so I went with him。
We went to the chemist’s to buy some medicine, then to a food store where he only picked up tow items。
Total time with him was about half an hour。
I was quite certain that if he’d been doing it all alone,he would have spe nt two hours or more。
He was in his late 80’s and was called Sid。
Sid had “Rose” tattooed (纹)on his finger, his wife’s name. She died 2 years old. I learned that Sid was alone now。
He once had two sons: one died a few weeks after he was born, and the other died with a heart problem。
Sid volunteered all his information as we walked back to my car for me to drive him home。
I couldn’t imagine his heartbreak。
When we arrived at Sid’s home, he gave me a big hug and thanked me。
He told me not to worry about him and he believed tomorrow would be better。

One day Thomas Alva Edison was given a letter by his teacher. His teacher asked him to give it to his mother. Edison thought it was something nice 。
After he returned home, he proudly gave it to his mother, saying “My teacher let me give this letter to you。
”
Not knowing what it was, Edison’s mother opened it, and then her eyes opened wide。
With tears in her eyes, she looked at her son and read out the letter aloud,“Your child is a genius. This school is too small for him and doesn’t have enough good teachers to train him。
Please teach him yourself。
”
The fact was that Edison liked asking strange questions in class。
His teachers thought he was mentally ill. They could no longer stand him and decided to stop him from going to school。
However, Ed ison’s mother didn’t give up on her son. She taught him at home.
Many years after Edison’s mother died and he was already one of the greatest inventors, one day he was looking through the old family things. Suddenly he saw a piece of folded paper in the corner of a drawer。
He took it and opened it up。
It read, “Your son is addled (mentally ill). We won’t let him come to school any more."
Edison cried for hours and then he wrote in his diary,“Thomas Alva Edison was an addled child, but, by his hero mother,he becomes the genius of the century."

In the future your automobile will run on water instead of gas! You will be able to buy a supercomputer that fits in your pocket! You might even drive a flying car!
Not all past predictions(预言) have been proven wrong. A few of them have been surprisingly accurate。
Some great thinkers predicted the arrival of the credit card, the fax machine and even the internet years before they happened. But for each prediction that has come true, some others have missed by a mile. Many of these predictions didn’t consider how people would want to use the technology, or if people really needed it in their lives or not。
Let’s look at some predictions from the not—too—distant past。
Robot Helpers
Where’s the robot in my kitchen?Nowhere, of course. And he’s probably not coming anytime soon. Robots do exist today, but mostly in factories and other manufacturing environments.
Back in the 1950s, however, people said that by now personal robots would be in most people's homes。
So why hasn't it happened? Maybe because robots are still too expensive and clumsy. And probably the idea of robots cooking our dinners and washing our clothes is just too weird. At home we seem to be doing fine without them.
Telephones of Tomorrow?
In 1964 an American company introduced the video telephone. They said by the year 2000 most people would have a video phone in their homes. But of course the idea hasn’t caught on yet.
Why?The technology worked fine, but it overlooked something obvious:people’s desire for privacy。
Would you want to have a video phone conversation with someone after you just step out of the shower?
Probably not-——it could be uncomfortable!Just because technology doesn’t always mean people will want to use it.
And finally, how about that crazy prediction of the flying car? It's not so crazy any more! But a flying car remains one of the most wonderful technology ideas to capture our imagination. Keep watching the news———or perhaps the sky outside your window to see what the future will bring.
12. The passage mainly deals with______。
A。
predictions that haven't come true B. predictions that can catch out imagination
C. new technology that can benefit out life D。
predictions that have come true
13. Which of the following is probably NOT the author’s belief?
A。
Technology doesn’t always mean people will want to use it.
B. Many of the high—tech things people thought we’d be using simply haven’t appeared
C. Predictions don’t need to consider pe ople's practical use of the technology
D。
High-tech things are not always convenient to people’s life
14. Robot Helpers haven’t been used in most people’s home because______。
A。
robots can only do jobs in factories.
B. the kind of robots won’t bring people practical use。
C。
people find it difficult to control the kind of robots.
D.the kind of robots hasn’t been developed yet
15。
What can we learn about video telephones from the passage?
A. People haven't come up with the idea to invent video telephones
B。
People find video telephones bring lots of convenience
C。
Video telephones are well accepted by people at home
D. Video telephones haven't been popular at home.

第三部分任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1。
5分,满分15分)
As a saying goes, “If you have a good friend, your joys are doubled and your sorrows are halved”。
Friends are a helping hand, a comforting shoulder to lean on, a patient ear to listen to you and most importantly, a warm and loving hug to embrace(拥抱) you。
Man is a social animal by nature。
We all need friends,as they are there for us when we need support, just as we are there for them whenever they need us. Therefore, it is necessary for you to know how to make friends.
The first step is to open yourself up。
If you want to make good friends, you should be able to share your thoughts and feelings with other people first. Only when you share something of yourself with others, can you begin making friends. When your friends open a conversation with you, they are usually expecting you to share information in return. That is to say, when you are in a conversation, you'd better express your own thoughts and feelings。
If a conversation is one-sided,the person doing all the talking may think the other person is not interested in what he is saying。
So, when talking with your friends, be sure that the conversation is a two—way street。
One of the most important keys to building a solid(坚固的) friendship with other people is to listen to them—really listen。
When your friends tell you something that happened to them or complain about a situation, they are usually not looking for agreement but just want to be heard. So do n’t try to change their mind or solve their problems, just let them know that you are listening to them.
Respecting your friends is also important to keep your relationships healthy
and strong. Looking at your friends while they are talking to you is one way to show your respect, as they will feel that what they are saying is important to you.
Unconditional support and encouragement is one of the things which friends have。
True friendship means offering a shoulder when they need it, crying with them when they are sad, and laughing with them when they are happy。
Only in this way, can the tree of friendship last for a long time。
43._______ to
you r friends

Dear Peter,
I'm writing to tell you something about my new school life. At first, I find it a little difficult to get used to the senior school life。
The subjects we are learning are obvio usly more difficult. Besides, with endless homework to do, we almost have no time for exercise and other activities. I feel greatly stressed but I’m determined to go through all the difficulties and learn every subject well.
Fortunately, the teachers and classmates are all helpful and kind. And I'm glad to make a new friend-Wang Lin,who is very outgoing and always ready to help others。
It was with his help that I overcame my fear or maths and made great progress. I thinks friends should always help and encourage each other。
How about your school life? I’m looking forward to your reply
Yours,
Li Hua。
