As a student from the small city of Nanyang in Henan Province, China, I am often asked to describe where I'm from. Nanyang may not be a famous international metropolis, but to me it will always be a special place filled with culture, history, and wonderful memories of my childhood.
Located in northern Henan along the banks of the Qing River, Nanyang has a population of around 10 million people across its city center and surrounding rural areas. While not one of China's largest cities, it has an important place in the country's long history, serving as a key transportation hub and cultural crossroads.
One of Nanyang's claims to fame is its status as one of the eight ancient cultural cities of China. Our city's roots can be traced back over 3,500 years to the Shang Dynasty, when it was an important regional capital. Many significant historical and cultural relics remain from that era and later dynasties like the Han, Sui, Tang, and Song.
Perhaps the most famous is the Neixiang County ancient tombs, a UNESCO World Heritage site containing the remarkably preserved mausoleums of multiple feudal lords and princesses from ancient times. Among the most incredible artifacts found were thousands of exquisite jade burial pieces andjade suits completely covering the remains. Touring these tombs provides a window into life during China's earliest dynastic eras.
Another major Nanyang landmark is the Nanyang Chu Cultural Eco-Museum, which celebrates the history and culture of the Chu state that ruled the region before the Qin Dynasty united China. The centerpiece is a gigantic 35-meter tall statue of Xuzhou, a famous Chu leader known for his chivalry. The museum grounds re-create a Chu capital city with palace architecture, gardens, a folk village, and displays on everything from Chu bronze-working to cuisine.
While Neixiang's tombs and the Chu museum draw visitors from across China, Nanyang's ancient sites are just part of what makes the city special to locals like me. We take great pride in our region's rich cultural traditions, unique cuisine, and stunning natural scenery.

When I'm home, I most look forward to my mom's simple but delicious home-cooked Nanyang meals like potato buns, stir-fried pea sprouts, and fried shrimp wontons.
In addition to its rich culture, Nanyang's surroundings provide beautiful natural scenery thanks to the Qing River, Tongguan Kilns ancient forests, and Xiangxi National Forest Park.
I have so many happy memories of family outings hiking in forests, boating along the Qing's gentle waters, and simply relaxing amid the greenery.
One of my favorite childhood spots was the Nanyang Jade Culture Park, which celebrates the region's jade industry and showcases gorgeous local jade artworks. I was always amazed by
the detailed landscapes, animals, and figurines carved into pieces of jade born from Henan's mountains. The park's winding paths and streams made it feel almost like a real-life jade wonderland.
While Nanyang may lack the soaring skyscrapers and dynamism of Beijing or Shanghai, our small city has a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere that makes it a wonderful place to grow up. I have so many happy memories of wandering the old city alleys, bargaining at the fired food street stalls, and playing games in neighborhood courtyards with friends into the evening.
At the same time, growing up in Nanyang has given me an appreciation for China's ancient history and culture. Whether it was touring the Neixiang tombs, attending Zhusheng operas, or picnicking amid Xiangxi park's forests on weekends, I was constantly surrounded by connections to our region's storied past.
Of course, Nanyang is not without its modern developments and tourism today. A new high-speed rail line has better connected us to major cities, while newly renovated areas like Zhongzhou Ancient Street attract visitors with arts and crafts stores, restaurants, and hotels recreating an old-world atmosphere.
Luxury hotels and entertainment plazas have also started springing up to serve tourists. However, the city still retains an authentic, historic character distinct from glitzy cosmopolitan areas at its core. I'm proud that Nanyang has managed to modernize while still preserving its rich heritage.
To me, this blend of ancient culture and modern development perfectly captures the spirit of my beloved hometown. Nanyang will forever hold a special place in my heart as the place where I grew up surrounded by incredible history, unique traditions, warm community spirit, and unmatched natural beauty.
