Most offer quality meals for less than the cost of a takeaway sandwich in London.Great choice and value can be found in Bangkok's other attractions, too. Foroverseas business people who enjoy shopping in luxury and air-conditioned comfort, the city has hundreds of modern shopping malls. Some foreigners, however, prefer the charms of Chatuchak Market, where anything can be bought at a good price by the skilled bargainer. When the time comes to talk business many overseas business people prefer to move out of the markets and onto the golf course. Thailand has thousands of courses, which can provide a welcome break from the busy and noisy city life. But most business people go to the golf course because it's the perfect place to discuss the next big deal.Because of the fast-paced life some foreign business people see Bangkok as a place to stay for the short term, rather than a lifetime. Australian computer softwaredesigner Sarah Huang is seven months pregnant but still working full-time in her Bangkok office. She hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself."What I mean is," explained the recorder, "do you have a job, or are youjust a. . . ""Of course I have a job," said Emily. "I'm a mother.""We don't list imother' as an occupation... ihousewife' covers it," said the recorder. One day I found myself in the same situation. The clerk was obviously a career woman, confident and possessed of a high sounding title. "What is your occupation?" she asked. The words simply came out. "I'm a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations. "The clerk paused, ballpoint pen frozen in mid-air.I repeated the title slowly, and then I stared with wonder as my statement was written in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire."Might I ask," said the clerk with new interest, "just what you do in this field?"Coolly, without any trace of panic in my voice, I heard myself reply, "I have a continuing program of research (what mother doesn't), in the lab and in the field (normally I would have said indoors and out). Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities (any mother disagrees?) , and I often work 14 hours a day (24 is more like it) . But the job is more challenging than most careers and rewards are more of a satisfaction rather than just money. "There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk's voice as she completed the form, stood up, and showed me out.As I drove into our driveway, feeling happier by my attractive and exciting new career, I was greeted by my lab assistants-aged 13, 7 and 3.Upstairs I could hear our new experimental model (a 6-month-old baby), in the child-development program, testing out a new vocal pattern.I felt proud! I had gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and essential to mankind than "just another mother".Motherhood... What a glorious career! "But it has a serious influence on the safety of people who type or read textwhile walking. "Anecdotes back him up. A tourist from Taiwan walked off a port near Melbourne last month while checking Facebook-bringing an abrupt, and icy end to a penguin- watching visit. Another shopper in the U.S. was too addicted to his mobile phone to notice the fountain ahead, walking straight into it.And as mobile-phone use has grown-to about 77% of the world's population, the study says-so has the number of phone-related accidents. The number of U. S. emergency-room visits linked to phone use on the move doubled to as many as l,500 between 2005 and 2010, an Ohio State University study recently showed.Authorities world-wide have taken note. Signs on Hong Kong's subway system advise passengers in three languages to keep their eyes off their phones. Police and transport authorities have also warned the danger in Singapore, where the Straits Times newspaper ranked it as "No.2 Bad Habit", due to the rising number of road deaths. Some U.S. states, including New York and Arkansas, are even considering bans onthis act.The Australian study used 26 volunteers, a third of whom admitted having hit objects while texting. They were fitted with different equipment in different parts oftheir body, and asked to walk 8.5 meters three times-once without a phone, oncewhile reading a text and once while writing a text-while eight cameras captured the action.V olunteers using the phone walked slower and with shorter steps (and slowest ofall when typing), and, more seriously, they locked their arms and elbows in-like "robots", in the researchers' words. That forced their heads to move more, throwingthem off balance."In a pedestrian environment, inability to maintain a straight path would be likely to increase potential for hits, falls and traffic accidents," said Mr. van den Hoorn."The best thing to do is to step aside and stop, or keep off the phone."66. Which of the following about "Texting pedestrians" is WRONG?A. People who type while walking.B. People who phone while walking.C. People who text while walking.D. People who read text message while walking.67. The writer uses the two examples in Paragraph 3 to showA. the advantages of mobile phonesB. the use of mobile phones in waterC. the use of mobile phones in a wrong wayD. the popularity of mobile phones68. Equipping them with advanced machines.69. Why are texting pedestrians likely to hit or fall according to the passage?A. They walk too fast.B. They lock their arms and elbows.C. They are out of balance.D. They walk with longer steps.70. What is the best title for the passage?A. Text message or e-mail only?B. Ways to avoid fallsC. Mobile phones for entertainmentD. The basic cause of it lies in discrimination, which claims women inequality with men in all aspects of life. Violence is both origin in discrimination and serves to worsen discrimination.Violence against women is a sign of historically unequal status of women compared to men, which has resulted into domination (控制,主宰) and discrimination against women by men and to the prevention of the full development of women. Violenceagainst women is one of the important social means by which women are restricted intoa secondary position in comparison with men.As violence against women is spread worldwide, many women are targets becauseof their ethnic group, class, sex or disability status. Many women think that the psychological consequences of abuse are even more dangerous than its physical effects. The experience of abuse often shakes women's self- respect and puts them at great risk of a number of mental health problems, such as: Depression is becoming broadly recognized as a main health problem in the world. Women who are abused by their partners suffer more depression and anxiety thanwomen who have not been abused, according to studies in Australia, Nicaragua, Pakistan, and the US.Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a strong anxiety disorder that can happen when people go through or witness a very unpleasant event in which they feeldisappointed and helpless or fear death or injury. The symptoms of PTSD contain mentally reliving the upsetting event by means of flashbacks (闪回,倒叙) ; avoiding anything that would remind one of the events; experiencing discomfort in sleeping and concentrating; and being easily alarmed or frightened. The severe violence is also likely to lead to suicide. Some women kill themselves or try to do so. Researches from some countries, including Sweden, and the US, have showed that domestic violence is closely connected with suicide. Abused women who have PTSD symptoms prove to be most likely to try suicide.Abused women are more likely than other women to misuse alcohol and drugs. When a person' s everyday life functioning or life alternatives continue to be influenced, a post-traumatic stress disorder may be the problem, requiring professional treatment.Title: 71I . 72 0f historically unequal statusDomination and discrimination from men , s leading position andpreventing 73II. 74 : women's self-respect shake and 75 Occur.76 , a main health problemPost-traumatic stress disorder, a strong 77 , happens under certainconditions. One of its symptoms is mentally reliving 78 by means of flashbacks.79 , especially for women with PTSD symptomsAlcohol and drug misuseIII. 80Professional treatmentSection B (10 marks)Directions: Read the jollowing passage. Poetry, shortstories or drawing are ideal activities to introduce children to the concept of leadership. Ask children to think about what makes a great leader and then express their ideas. Games like blind obstacle courses can build communication skills as well.Planning and organizing is a fundamental leadership quality. long-serving employees to thank them for loyal service is now just a memory." says the Educational and Training Support Agency. This new development in the shape and movement of the workforce throughout Western businesses is partly a result of the way that layers of middle management are being removed, leaving more workers responsible for their own development."Having workers take responsibility for their own development might be dramatic, but it is now the rule," says the Educational and Training Support Agency."Today, not only are workers more mobile, they have to run to keep up with changes." says the Government-founded agency."It is no longer enough for a worker to gain a set of skills.Workers need the ability to react and get used to changes." This new system is also being pushed along by the way that industry is looking to its workers to renew their own skills. In the United States, some companies have contracts (合同)which repair their employees to show regularly how they have their skills up to date.Contrary to this traditions of the past, employers in the West are now looking for autonomous learners as recruits, people who can develop their own continuing education beyond the school and university system. At the same time.businesses are developing the capacity for workers to take up autonomous learning on site in workplace, so that the skills and abilities of all workers in a business continue to improve and increase."This.of course," says business theory."will also improve the productivity (生产率)of the workers and therefore the profits of the company."66.The management in western companies no longer presents gold watches to their employees because _____.A.they are not loyal to companiesB.other rewards replace gold watchesC.the way prove to be a failureD.serving a company for life is rare now67.The western workforce frequently changes their jobs partly because _____.A.hopping from job to job has become a new trendB.employees are expecting to have more experiences in their lifeC.workers have to take more responsibility for themselvesD.it is easy to complete themselves by doing so68.The passage seems to suggest that the present situation in society requires that workers should A.show more loyalty to their companiesB.try to develop their skills to fit in with changesC.go to college to have their skills up to dateD.be quick in changing their careers if there is the possibility69.The phrase "autonomous learner" in the last paragraph means _____.A.people who have received higher educationB.people who study hard themselvesC.people who learn things very quicklyD.people who continue their study beyond regular education70.Companies require their employee's development mainly because _____.A.it will finally help to bring more profits to the companyB.it can attract more workers who pay special attention to self-developmentC.it is good for the employees to develop their skillsD.it will make workers more responsible and loyal to the companyPart Iv Writing (45 marks)Section A(10 marks)Directions Read.the following passage.Fill.in the numbered, blanks by using the information from the passage.Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.Learning to improve your focus throughout the day can be a little difficult, only because we are talking about 18 to 24 hours, depending on the number of hours you sleep. However, if we break down your day into manageable time frames, it would make it much easier to learn to improve your focus.Focus, or concentration, is a skill that can be taught, so there are some exercises you can do to improve your focus.Start with easy exercises like staring at a picture on the wall for a few minutes without moving or talking to anyone.Once you learn how to block out your surroundings, your focus will improve.Other mind exercises you can do are internalizing. This is when you picture yourself in a desired situation, and then you work around your picture.Actors do this a lot to block out laughter, noise, or other distractions. An example of this would be to imagine you in a potentially stressful situation, like a singer in a concert.Try to play out the scene in your mind what you would do if different scenarios were to happen. This can actually be a lot of fun.and you learn how to improve your focus by concentrating on one thing only.If this sounds a little strange to you, you could try another strategy. Why not make lists? Make a list for the things you need to accomplish for the morning, another for the afternoon.and finally, another list for the evening.Study your lists carefully and see where you can move things around. For instance, if you have a dinner to arrange that evening, don't bunch up everything in the afternoon, right before the guests arrive.Divide your chores and errands between morning and afternoon, and give yourself an hour or two to relax before the guests arrive.Planning helps you focus. It will also not stress you out.Another way to improve your focus is to take breaks. If children have rest and lunch as their breaks, adults should also allow themselves the privilege of stopping for a drink or a 30 minute sitcom on TV.Of course, if you are working in an office, you are allowed coffee breaks.Use this time wisely.Don't spend it with your co-workers beside the coffee machine talking about problems in the office.Doing this would actually stress you and get you to lose focus on the things that need to be done.Y our breaks should be as quiet as possible.Read a book.take a walk.or visit a daycare.Go and do anything that will give your brain a rest. The reason why we lose focus so easily is because we have too much on our minds.Of course, it could also be because you are bored with nothing to do all day.A good balance between a too relaxed brain and an overly active brain is a desirable situation to be in.Find your capacity to work, and try not to veer away too far from it on a daily basis.Improving your focus also means knowing what you can do and being confident about doing it well.Focus is important but difficult to improve1.71 to improve your focusI .Staring at picture.◆Staring at a wall picture 72 to learn to block out surroundingsⅡ.73 .◆ Concentrating on imagining a potentially stressful work place to block out 74Ⅲ.75 .◆ Dividing a day into 76 for chores and errands to be done.as well as arranging time for relaxationIV.Taking breaks.◆ Wisely using time to have a drink, watch TV quietly instead of 77 ; just resting your brain2.78 for easily losing focus◆ Having too much on minds◆79 all dayConclusion Keeping 80 between extremely relaxed brain and too active brain.Section B (10 marks)Directions Read.the following passage.Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage and the required words limit.Write your answers on your answer sheet. When I was 10 years old, my friend Sydney was diagnosed with a brain tumor.Sydney fought against it, but the tumor did not respond to treatment, and could not be surgically removed.Themass wrapped around her brain stem, the area of the brain that controls the vital functions of life such as breathing and blood pressure.Sydney died at the age of 11.After her death, I felt immense sadness and frustration about pediatric cancer.I decided to turn these negative emotions into positive actions. When I was 11 years old.I founded the Pink Polka Dots Guild(PPD)with two friends. The guild is named after Sydney s favorite color and pattern, which represents both the memory of my friend and the guild's positive approach. My goal has been to raise enough money to find a cure for brain cancer, which is the second most common cancer in children.Over the years, PPD has held fundraisers from lemonade stands to art expositions to golf tournaments.I have played a leading role in planning and organizing each PPD event. The very first Pink Polka Dots event, a garage sale.raised $ 9.000, and our most recent fundraiser, the fifth annual golf tournament, brought in over $ 73.000.The guild progressed faster than I ever anticipated. In five years, we have become 40 members strong, and raised almost half of a million dollars.I've been shocked by the public recognition that the guild has earned.PPD received an award from a U.S.Senator, spoke at a TED Conference, was featured in Teen V ogue, and appeared on The Note Berkus Show. Each of these honors has raised awareness and money for our cause. The initiative that I have taken has truly impacted the world of cancer research.PPD has provided start-up funding for scientific discoveries, such as "Tumor Paint", which illuminates cancerous cells so that surgeons can remove them with unprecedented accuracy. The discovery appeared in Time Magazine., and will be reviewed by the Food & Drug Administration starting in early 2012.1 am extremely proud to have helped fund the research of this life-saving technology.Pink Polka Dots has inspired me to be an activist. My experience has taught me that with passion and dedication, it is possible to make a difference to the world. The determination that Pink Polka Dots sparked in me has carried over to all aspects of my life, making me a driven academic, a competitive debater and a dedicated volunteer.81.Why did the author feel sad and frustrated? which claims women inequality with men in all aspects of life.Violence is both origin in discrimination and serves to worsen discrimination.Violence against women is a sign of historically unequal status of women compared to men, which has resulted into domination(拄制,主宰)and discrimination against women by men and to the prevention of the full development of women.Violence against women is one of the important social means by which women are restricted into a secondary position in comparison with men.As violence against women is spread worldwide, many women are targets because of their ethnic group, class, sex or disability status. Many women think that the psychological consequences of abuse are even more dangerous than its physical effects. The experience of abuse often shakes women's self- respect and puts them at great risk of a number of mental health problems, such as:Depression is becoming broadly recognized as a main health problem in the world.Women who are abused by their partners suffer more depression and anxiety than women who have not been abused! according to studies in Australia, Nicaragua, Pakistan, and the US.Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)is a strong anxiety disorder that can happen when people go through or witness a very unpleasant event in which they feel disappointed and helplessor fear death or injury. The symptoms of PTSD contain mentally reliving the upsetting event by means of flashbacks(闵回,倒叙); avoiding anything that would remind one of the events; experiencing discomfort in sleeping and concentrating; and being easily alarmed or frightened. The severe violence is also likely to lead to suicide. Some women kill themselves or try to do so.Researches from some countries, including Sweden! a post-traumatic stress disorder may be the problem, requiring professionaltreatment.【题文】With the right encouragement and tools, children can develop leadership qualities that are important to help them succeed in all areas of life.Leadership activities and games help build these skills by enabling children to become more self-aware and improve their self-respect.Good leaders can convey their thoughts and feelings effectively.Poetry, short stories or drawing are ideal activities to introduce children to the concept of leadership.Ask children to think about what makes a great leader and then express their ideas.Games like blind obstacle courses can build communication skills as well.Planning and organizing is a fundamental leadership quality.Children can learn this skill byhelping to plan a concert or play.Instead of assigning just one leader, divide the group into several small ones and assign leaders to each group. One group can be in charge of assigning roles and the second could be in charge of making invitations. How you distribute leadership roles will vary depending on the age of thechildren and what you have chosen to perform.Compromise is a skill of many effective leaders.Goals are obtained faster when arguments don't slow the process.Activities that teach children the art of compromise help them to negotiate with friends and family naturally.Group science projects, for example, can help enable children to learn how to compromise and negotiate. The success or failure of the project will depend on the children's ability to negotiate andwork together. The ability to work well with others is another important leadership skill.Team sports like baseball can teach children how to work as a group and that their contribution is important to the overall success of the team. This builds their confidence and encourages them to think beyond themselves and their individual needs.81.What activities can be used to introduce children to the concept of leadership? Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage.AA report, published in last week’s Journal of the American Medical Association, offers a picture of how risky it is to get a lift from a teenage driver. Indeed, a 16-year-old driver with three or more passengers is three times as likely to have a fatal (致命) accident as a teenager driving alone. By contrast, the risk of death for drivers between 30 and 59 decreases with each additional passenger. The author also found that the death rates for teenage drivers increased dramatically after 10 p. m., and especially after midnight. With passengers in the car, the driver was even more likely to die in a late-night accident.Robert Foss, a scientist at the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center, says the higher death rates for teenage drivers have less to do with “really stupid behavior” than with just a lack of driving experience. “The basic thing,” he says, “is that a dults who are responsible for issuing (发放) licenses fail to recognize how skilled a task driving is.”Both he and the author of the study believe that the way to reduce the harm is to have so-called graduated licensing systems, in which getting a license is a slower process. A graduated license requires that a teenager first prove himself capable of driving in the presence of an adult, followed by a period of driving at night with a limited number of passengers before graduating to get a full driving license.Graduated licensing systems have reduced teenage driver crashes, according to recent studies. About half of the states now have some sort of graduated licensing system in place, but only 10 of those states have number limitation on passengers. California is the strictest, with a new driver prohibited from carrying any passenger under 20 for the first six months.56. Which of the following situations is most dangerous according to the passage?A. Adults giving a lift to teenagers on the highway after 10 p. m.B. A teenager driving after midnight with passengers in the car.C. Adults driving with three or more teenage passengers late at night.D. A teenager getting a lift from a stranger on the highway at midnight.57. According to Robert Foss, the high death rate of teenage drivers is mainly due to __________.A. their frequent driving at nightB. their lack of driving experienceC. their improper way of drivingD. their driving with passengers58. Which of the following statements is true according to Paragraph 3?A. Teenagers should spend more time learning to drive.B. Driving is a skill too difficult for teenagers to learn.C. Teenagers should be limited in taking driving lessons.D. People issuing license are partly responsible for the accidents.59. A suggested measure to be taken to reduce teenagers’ driving accidents is that __________.A. driving in the presence of an adult should be made a ruleB. they should be forbidden to take on passengersC. they should not be allowed to drive after 10 p. m.D. the licensing systems should be improved60. The present situation in about half of the states is that the graduated licensing system __________.A. is under discussionB. is about to be set upC. has been put into effectD. has been perfectedB“Confidence”is probably one of the most noticeable traits (特点) in the Americans. They show confidence in the way they talk, the way they smile, the way they dress and the way they walk. Living and competing with all these confident American students, I find it extremely important to be confident as an international student and a foreign instructor. As a student, being confident means you should never hesitate to raise your hand whenever a question or a point comes to your mind. Don’t mind if it sounds simple or silly. Otherwise you will never get a chance to speak in class at all. What’s worse, the professors may think you are not prepared for the discussion or you do not have your own opinion on the issue—this is the last comment any graduate would like to receive.Being confident for me as a foreign instructor means calmly asking the student to repeat what he or she has said if I did not get it. Pretending to understand what you actually do not may just bring yourself embarrassment or even disgrace. But the time I most need to be confident is when my students come to myoffice and bargain about the grades I have given for their speeches (The course I’m teaching here is Public Speaking). Modesty is a trait highly valued in China, but it won’t be of much help here if you want to survive and succeed in a good American graduate program.61. To compete with American students, it’s very important to __________.A. be quite confidentB. be polite and friendlyC. have more discussions with themD. understand what they think about62. A professor will have the worst opinion of a student who __________.A. gives a silly or simple answerB. tries to seize any chance to speak in classC. shows no interest in the courseD. is considered to have no opinion of his own63. The author is most likely to feel embarrassed if __________.A. he asks a student to repeat what he has saidB. the students bargain with himC. he pretends to know what he doesn’tD. he has to give a speech64. We learn from the second paragraph that __________.A. we should also remain modest in AmericaB. modesty doesn’t help you much in AmericaC. Americans also like modest peopleD. modesty can help you get through an American graduate program65. The passage is mainly developed by __________.A. providing examplesB. making comparisonsC. giving different figuresD. telling personal experiencesCDo you want to live with a strong sense of peacefulness, happiness, goodness, and self-respect? The collection of happiness actions broadly categorized(把……归类) as “honor”help you create this life of good feelings. Here’s an example to show how honorable actions create happiness.Say a store clerk fails to charge us for an item. If we keep silent, and profit from the clerk’s mistake, we would drive home with a sense of sneaky (暗中的) excitement. Later we might tell our family or friendsabout our good fortune. On the other hand, if we tell the clerk about the uncharged item, the clerk would be grateful and thank us for our honesty. We would leave the store with a quiet sense of honor that we might never share with another soul. Then, what is it to do with our sense of happiness? In the first case, where we don’t tell the clerk, a couple of things would happen. Deep down inside we would know ourselves as a type of thief. In the process, we would lose some peace of mind and self-respect. We would also demonstrate that we cannot be trusted, since we advertise our dishonor by telling our family and friends. We damage our own reputations by telling others. In contrast, bringing the error to the clerk’s attention causes different things to happen. Immediately the clerk knows us to be honorable. Upon leaving the store, we feel honorable and our self-respect is increased. Whenever we take honorable actions we gain the deep internal rewards of goodness and a sense of nobility. There is a beautiful positive cycle that is created by living a life of honorable actions.Honorable thoughts lead to honorable actions. Honorable actions lead us to a happier existence. And it’s easy to think and act honorably again when we’re happy. While the positive cycle can be difficult to start, once it’s started, it’s easy to continue. Keeping on doing good deeds brings us peace of mind, which is important for our happiness.66. According to the passage, the positive action in the example contributes to our __________.A. self-respectB. financial rewardsC. advertising abilityD. friendly relationship67. The author thinks that keeping silent about the uncharged item is equal to __________.A. lyingB. stealingC. cheatingD. advertising68. The underlined phrase “bringing the error to the clerk’s attention” means __________.A. telling the truth to the clerkB. offering advice to the clerkC. asking the clerk to be more attentiveD. reminding the clerk of the charged items69. How will we feel if we let the clerk know the mistake?A. We’ll be very excited.B. We’ll feel unfortunate.C. We’ll have a sense of honor.D. We’ll feel sorry for the clerk.70. Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?A. How to Live TruthfullyB. Importance of PeacefulnessC. Ways of Gaining Self-respectD. Happiness through Honorable ActionsPart ⅣWriting (45 marks)Section A (10 marks)Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage.Write NO MORE THAN 3 WORDS for each answer. No one should be forced to wear a uniform under any circumstance. Uniforms are demanding to the human spirit and totally unnecessary in a democratic(民主的) society. Uniforms tell the world that the person who wears one has no value as an individual but only lives to function as a part of a whole. The individual in a uniform loses all self-worth.There’re those who say that wearing a uniform gives a person a sense of identification with a larger, more important concept. What could be more important than the individual himself? If an organization is so weak that it must rely on cloth and buttons to inspire its members, that organization has no right to continue its existence. Others say that the practice of making persons wear uniforms, say in a school, removes all envy and competition in the matter of dress, such that a poor person who can’t afford good quality clothing needn’t be looked down upon by a wealthy person who wears expensive, quality clothing. Those persons conveniently ignore such vital concepts as freedom of choice, motivation and individuality. If all persons were to wear the same clothing, why would anyone struggle to be better? It’s only a short step from forcing everyone to wear the same clothing to forcing everyone to drive the same car, have the same type of house, and eat the same type of food. When this happens, all inspiration to improve one’s life is removed. Why would parents bother to work hard so that their children are going to be forced to have exactly the same life that they had?Uniforms also hurt the economy. Right now, billions of dollars are spent on the fashion industry yearly. Thousands of persons are employed in designing, creating and marketing different types of clothing. If everyone were forced to wear uniforms, artistic personnel would be unnecessary. Sales persons would be more than enough as well; why bother to sell the only items that are available? The wearing of uniforms would destroy the fashion industry which in turn would have a chain effect on such industries as advertising and promotion. Without advertising, newspapers, magazines and television wouldn’t be able to remain in business. The entire information and entertainment industries would crash.Title: 71 effects of forcing people to wear the uniformⅠ. Write your answers on your answer sheet. The young man heading out of the convenience store wanted to do the right thing. He really did.But Zagros Bigvand was in a hurry that day last summer, and the elderly woman with the cane (拐杖) “was walking really, really slow”. So he let go of the door he’d been holding open for the stranger—just as she neared it. “I held the door for that lady for five minutes,” said Bigvand, of Dallas, Texas. “But finally I had to go. So I let it go and she looked at me and I looked at her. I felt bad about it all day. And I said I wish I could apologize to that woman.” So he did. His online apology became the beginning for apology, one of a growing number of so-called confession(忏悔) websites aimed at allowing people anonymously(匿名地) to admit to, and apologize for, anything—from being a shopaholic(购物狂) to cheating on a partner. “Human beings have a ne ed to confess,” said James Campbell Quick, a fellow with the American Psychological Association. “We don’t always want people to know the depths of our souls. Anonymity lets us flush that stuff out there and walk away.” Confession websites have become popular over the past few years. Almost all online confession sites promise anonymity. Website operators say there is no way to know which claims are factual and which are not. And there is no way to track participants either. Though it is commonly believed that confession is therapeutic(有治疗功能的), Timothy Wolff, an associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Texas, said he doesn’t see online confession as the best way to remove guilt or handle a crisis. “There’s an element(元素) of separation, physically, that allows people to do it without fear of reprisal(报复),” Wolff said. “But if someone does it and the response is not quite so bad, then they might put it out there in reality.”81. Finding and keeping the right balance between progress and the protection of cultural sites can be a big challenge.Big challenges, however, can sometimes lead to great solutions. In the 1950s, the Egyptian government wanted to build a new dam across the Nile in order to control floods, produce electricity, and supply water to more farmers in the area. But the proposal led to protests. Water from the dam would likely damage a number of temples and destroy cultural relics that were an important part of Egypt’s cultural heritage. After listening to different voices, the government turned to the United Nations for help in 1959.A committee was established to limit damage to the Egyptian buildings and prevent the loss of cultural relics. The group asked for contributions from different departments and raised funds within the international community. Experts investigated the issue, conducted several tests, and then made a proposal for how the buildings could be saved. Finally, a document was signed, and the work began in 1960.The project brought together governments and environmentalists from around the world. Temples and other cultural sites were taken down piece by piece, and then moved and put back together again in a place where they were safe from the water. In 1961, German engineers moved the first temple. Over the next 20 years, thousands of engineers and workers rescue d 22 temples and countless cultural relics. Fifty countries donated nearly $80 million to the project. When the project ended in 1980, it was considered a great success. Not only had the countries found a path to the future that did not run over the relics of the past, but they had also learnt that it was possible for countries to work together to build a better tomorrow. The spirit of the Aswan Dam project is still alive today. If a problem seems too difficult for a single nation, the global community can sometimes provide a solution.4.What was the major concern regarding the construction of the new dam?A.The damage to local farms.B.The high cost of the construction.C.The disapproval of local communities.D.The potential harm to cultural remains.5.How were the cultural sites rescued?A.By rebuilding similar cultural sites.B.By building fences around them.C.By taking them down into pieces.D.By removing and piecing them together again.6.Which of the following best describes the Aswan Dam project?A.International cooperation is not necessary for large-scale projects.B.It is possible to achieve progress without sacrificing cultural heritage.C.The opinions of experts should be ignored in favor of popular opinion.D.Countries should always prioritize their own interests over global concerns.7.What is the key to the success of the Aswan Dam project?A.Trial and error.B.Adequate investment.C.Global cooperation.D.Careful investigation.Since the last ice age, humans have cleared nearly half of the earth’s forests and grasslands for agriculture. With the world population expanding, there’s ever-increasing pressure on farmland to produce not only more food but also clean energy. In places such as Yakima County, Washington, it’s created competition for space as land-hungry solar panels (板) consume available fields. Last month, the state approved plans to cover 1,700 acres of agricultural land with solar panels, fueling concerns over the long-term impacts of losing cropland.A recent study from the University of California, however, shows how farmers may soon harvest crops and energy together. One researcher, Majdi Abou Najm, explains that visible light spectrum (光谱) can be separated into blue and red light waves, and their photons (光子) have different properties. Blue ones have higher energy than red ones. While that gives blue light what is needed to generate power, it also results in higher temperatures. “From a plant angle, redphotons are the efficient ones,” says Abou Najm. “They don’t make the plant feel hot.”A goal of the study is to create a new generation of solar panels. He sees potential in the organic solar cells, which come from carbon-based materials. Thin and transparent, the cells are applied like a film onto various surfaces. This new technology could be used to develop special solar panels that block blue light to generate power, while passing the red light on to crops planted directly below. These panels could also provide shade for heat-sensitive fruits during the hottest part of the day.By 2050, we’ll have two billion more people, and we’ll need more food and more energy. By maximizing the solar spectrum, “we’re making full use of an endlessly sustainable resource,” says Abou Najm. “If a technology kicks in that can develop these panels, then the sky is the limit on how efficient we can be.”8.What problem does the first paragraph focus on?A.Losing cropland to solar panels.B.Distribution of the world population.C.Reduction in forests and grasslands.D.Competing for land between farmers.9.What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 2 refer to?A.Generation of solar power.B.Hot weather increasing efficiency.C.Blue photons having higher energy.D.Separation of visible light spectrum.10.What do we know about the organic solar cells?A.They make fruits heat-sensitive.B.They can cool down in hot days,C.They allow red light to pass through.D.They can store carbon-based materials.11.What does Abou Najm think of the future of the new solar panels?A.Limited.B.Promising.C.Uncertain.D.Challenging.While Industry 5.0 is believed to have started in 2020, the rise of AI in recent years has led experts to say it is now coming. Imagine AI-powered robots that see, hear, touch and more, pooling fresh data from across those groups of sensors to create that data with the vast ranges of digital data stored elsewhere online. The age is a major leap from the First Industrial Revolution, when steam engine started to achieve widespread commercial use.Professor John Nosta says, “The integration of sensory capabilities into AI models is not merely a technological leap. It represents a shift in our philosophical understanding of artificial and human intelligence.”He has also referred to the new era as “the Cognitive (认知) Age,” which will completely change how humans live, work, and think about themselves. According to Nosta, humans don’t typically think of computers as “experiencing” the world themselves. But that assumption will be challenged as more advanced AI systems are hooked up to ever more and ever greater sensors. The machines won’t just be logic boxes that humans input data and commands for processing. The AI will collect that data more and more on its own, experiencing the world for itself.“This is not just about understanding words, but also about grasping the tone, pitch (音高), and emphasis, which add layers of meaning often absent in written text. Image recognition adds another layer of complexity,” he added. “For example, it can analyze photographs, identify objects, and even understand the emotional content of facial expressions.”The Johannesburg-based business school is just one of many college-level programs attempting to investigate and teach its students about the still-emerging IR 5.0. Seton Hall in New Jersey offers a three-credit course on this latest age in human technology and trade; MIT has brought in guest speakers to lecture on the concept, and many other research institutions are following suit.12.Where does IR 5.0 differ from previous industrial revolution?A.It processes data and commands.B.It interacts with humans through texts.C.It enhances human sensory capabilities.D.It employs more senses in its application. 13.Why is IR 5. 0 called the Cognitive age?A.AI collects and interprets data itself.B.AI turns written texts into voice.C.AI understands written language well.D.AI has an ability of expressing emotions 14.How do some colleges address IR 5.0?A.By offering related courses.B.By expecting more industrial revolution.C.By applying AI to the technological trade.D.By preparing for the rapid economic changes.15.What is the best title for the text?A.Al Is Approaching Us Gradually B.A New IR Is About Machine LearningC.AI Has Developed Its Own Senses D.We Are Entering IR 5.0 NowPursue Y our Dreams Today, Not TomorrowHave you caught yourself daydreaming about your dreams? We often postpone our dreams, trapped in a cycle of delay. But why wait? 16 You don’t have to take a huge, life-changing step. You can take minute steps toward a brighter future. And start right now.17 If you never try, you’re going to be weighed down by your regrets. You’re always going to wonder how your life would’ve turned out if you actually took a chance on yourself. Don’t let your future self be disappointed by your present self.It doesn’t matter how old you are or how many people have warned you that you’re never going to succeed. Even the most successful people have had their hesitations about whether they had what it took to make it in their field. 18 Embrace a mindset of determination, knowing that success is within your reach. At the end of the day, you need to carve out a path for yourself that will lead to the most satisfaction.
