In recent years, people have been focusing on the quality of food that children are fed in schools. Former First Lady Michelle Obama worked hard to make school lunches healthier, resulting in new menus that featured less fat and salt, more fruits and vegetables.
But high-quality nutrients count for little when there is no time to eat them. Amy Ettinger reports, "There is no national standard on how much time kids get to eat that meal. " And with schools being occupied with test scores, teachers are using every available minute for lesson time, which often leaves kids without enough eating time.
This is a problem because the length of the school lunch period is a key factor (因素) in how much nutrition children actually gel. Research has found that having less than 20 minutes for lunch results in children consuming much less of their lunch than those with more than 20 minutes.
This is really terrible. For many low-income kids, that cafeteria lunch can represent half their daily energy intake. There's also another terrible message that it's acceptable to wolf down food as fast as possible before rushing off to your next class. Cafeteria time should be a chance to interact with friends, to learn important social skills, to observe and share varieties of food. It should be a break in day, a chance to relax before heading into the afternoon.
As Ettinger explains, some parents are hoping the National Parent Teacher Association will address this issue. This, in turn, would help parents push their kids' schools for better lunch time standards. Meanwhile, if you have a
kid in this situation, you can help by packing a healthy lunch to spare them the cafeteria lineup. Make the foods easy to eat, provide non-messy snacks that can be eaten in class, put great effort into serving a hearty breakfast, and sit down as a family for dinner whenever possible.
4. What did Michelle Obama make efforts to improve?
A. The quality of school lunches.
B. The performance of school kids.
C. The school lunch time kids have.
D. The eating habits of school kids.
5. What happens to children in American schools?
A. They are occupied with many tests.

C. They consume more meat than before.
D. They have less lunch time than before.
6. How are low-income kids influenced by the problem at school?
A. They can't go to classes on time.
B. They can't have enough energy.
C. They can't share different kinds of food.
D. They can't hold a positive attitude toward life.
7.What can parents do to solve the problem?
A. Prepare a better lunch for their kids.
B. Stop their kids going to the cafeteria.
C. Force schools to make adjustments to lunch.
D. Guide their kids on how to pack their own lunch.

Most teenagers are still trying to find their passion and purposes in life. However, not Gitanjali Rao. The 15-year-old girl has been coming up with innovative solutions to worldwide problems since she was ten. It is, therefore, not surprising that the teenager has won the honor of “America's Top Young Scientist”.
In the third grade, Rao was inspired to build a device after witnessing the shocking story unfold in Flint, Michigan, where cost-cutting measures led to the use of a polluted river as the city's primary water supply and incredibly high levels of lead made their way into people's drinking water.
After two months' research, Rao designed a small and portable device that used sensors to instantly detect lead in water. Called Tethys, after the Greek Goddess(女神) of freshwater, it attaches to a cellphone and informs the residents via an app if their drinking water contains lead. The design earned her the 3M Young Scientist Challenge in 2017. She is currently working with scientists and medical professionals to test Tethys' potential and
hopes the device will be ready for commercial use by 2022.
Later, Rao took on another social issue-drug addiction. Her app, called Epione, which won the Health Pillar Prize at the TCS Ignite Innovation Student Challenge in May 2019, is designed to catch drug addiction in young adults before it's too late.
More recently, the teenager has developed an app named Kindly, which usesartificial intelligence technology to detect possible signs of cyberbullying(网上欺凌). When users type in a word or phrase, Kindly is able to pick it up if it's bullying, and then it gives the option to edit it or send it the way it is. It gives them the chance to rethink what they are saying so that they know what to do next time.
All kinds of awesome, Gitanjali Rao has been selected from 5,000 equally impressive nominees(被提名人) for TIME Magazine's first-ever “Kid of the Year”.
8. What gave Rao the idea of inventing the device Tethys?
A. The incident of lead pollution.
B. The issue with drug addiction.
C. The shortage of water supplies.
D. The high cost of purifying water.
9. What is Rao expecting of Tethys?
A. It'll remove metal from water.
B. It'll make it to market soon.
C. It'll win her a higher prize.
D. It'll be fitted to cellphones.
10. What will Kindly allow users to do?
A. Receive pre-warning signals of threat.
B. Input words into a computer automatically.
C. Choose from secure social networking sites.
D. Weigh their words before posting them online.
11. Which of the following can best describe Gitanjali Rao as a young scientist?
A. Ambitious and humble.
B. Optimistic and adventurous.

Naomi Cooke was walking with a friend and their dogs through her local park in Burnside, on Tuesday when
she heard someone shout to watch out. Cooke turned and hardly had time to react before a flying disc hit her in the face with a "big bang”, leaving her right cheek swollen almost to the size of a golfball.
Two men playing disc golf at the course in Jellie Park were about 20 metres fromthe pairwhen one of them threw the disc hard, aiming for a nearby goal.
After being hit Cooke immediately went to the emergency department, where two CT scans on her face and cheek found she had escaped any broken bones. "I'm lucky it didn't hit my eye because I think I would have lost it." Cooke said.
Cooke often walks her dog at the park and said it was always busy with people playing disc golf, but it was not until after Tuesday that she became concerned about public safety there.
There were no signs about the disc golf course in the park, she said, and the area is shared with children and people walking their dogs.
“If it had hit one of the kids in the head, it could have killed them.” Cooke did not think she was the only person who had been hit before, and said there would be others who share her concerns.
Cooke planned to go to the council, saying it needed to realise how dangerous it was for the space to be shared by everyone and to provide disc golfers with a space where they can play safely. "There should be rules about how it's done, making it safe for everyone.”
12. What happened to Cooke on Tuesday?
A. She was struck by a golf ball.
B. She was hit by a flying disc.
C. She was beaten by two men.
D. She was frightened by a mad dog.
13. What do the underlined words "the pair" in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Cooke and her friend.
B. Cooke and her dog.
C. The two disc golfers.
D. The two CT scans.
14. How did Cooke feel about people playing disc golf in the park?
A. Acceptable.
B. Shocked.
C. Angry.
D. Worried.
