新概念英语第二册87课课文

新概念英语第二册87课课文87 Lesson 87 An accomplice of the PoliceIn the early hours of the morning, a middle-aged woman is driving along a lonely road when her attention is caught by some gypsy fortune-tellers working by the roadside. Since the woman is a fortune-teller herself, she cannot resist the temptation to stop. A young girl came up to the car and offered to tell her fortune. The woman agreed, handed over some money and was told to wait. A few minutes later, an old man appeared and spoke to her. He then returned to the girl and whispered something to her.The woman was informed that her fortune had been found in a bundle of old letters which had recently come into the possessionof the girl's father. She was told to call again at the girl's house that evening at 7:30. As soon as the fortune-teller's car had driven away, the girl went to a nearby phone-box to ring the police. At 7 o'clock that evening two plain-clothes policemen arrived at the address given by the girl. The woman was surprised to see a police car and two policemen, but they soon put her at ease by telling her that she was not in any kind of trouble. They asked her to accompany them to the police station where they explained the purpose of their visit. Earlier that day, a businessman had been found guilty of fraud. He had been sentenced to two years in prison, but he had disappeared. The police had obtained information that the man was hiding in the neighbourhood. They had therefore devised a plan to find out if the woman was harboring the criminal. The policemen suggested that she should go ahead with her visit to the fortune-teller's house at the agreed time. If the gypsy's fatherwas indeed hiding the man, he would give the woman a certain sign to show that he had recognized her. If not, she was to make an excuse and leave the house at once.Exactly at 7:30, the woman knocked at the front door of the house. The door was opened by the old man she had seen earlier in the day. While they were ostensibly discussing her fortune, the old man suddenly sneezed. The woman replied to his friend. At this the old man excused himself and left the room. As he did so, he tapped the gypsy's daughter twice on the arm. Realizing that this was the pre-arranged signal, the woman decided to put an end to the farce. She had scarcely got up to leave the room when the old man returned, followed by the two policemen.。
