The other day I heard a few local musicians talking:“I hate all the terrible pianos in this town. I hate that rubbish they play on the radio. They can’t even understand a bit of music.”“I’m never playing in that club again. Too many drunks and nobody listens to us.”But, one younger musician said, “There are a few clubs that book my band a few nights a month, and I’m trying to find other places to play. I’m also looking to book a few summer festivals this year.”I’ve heard that you are the average of the five people whom you spend the most time with, or to put it another way, you are who your friends are.Attitudes are important. Whether they’re positive or negative, they’re rubbing off on you. If you’re around people who complain about lack of work and about other musicians, or blame (责怪) others, and you play the role of victim (受害者), chances are you will start to as well. So it’s time to take a look at the people you call “friends”.This is an easy exercise: Make a list of the people who you hang out with, and simply stop spending time with the negative people on your list. Set a new standard (标准) for yourself and don’t become friends with people who fall below that standard.Keep successful people around you and your own chances for success will be much better. Ask them how they do it. Ask if they will help you get the work you’re looking for, or maybe give you some advice to help you on your career path.71. Teaching PoetryNo poem should ever be discussed or “analysed”,until it has been read aloud by someone, teacher or student.Better still, perhaps, read it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end,so the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears. All discussions of poetry are,in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is,finally, the most telling “interpretation”of it—suggesting tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once.Hearing a poet read in his or her own voice,on records or on films,is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching can not replace the student and teacher reading it or,best of all, reciting it.I have come to think,in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than “analysing”it,if there isn’t time for both.I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry.Poetry is “a criticism of life”,and “a heightening of life”.It is “an approach to the truth of feeling”,and it can “save your life”.It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies.I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who don’t like it should not be forced to communicate this to anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.【语篇导读】文章讲述作者作为英语教师,其目的之一就是让学生喜欢诗歌,并会在课堂上留出些时间来让学生听诗歌、思考诗歌。

PETS2-READING-1AIn the 1900's, American townspeople usually washed and brushed their teeth and combed their hair in the kitchen. Or they kept a water pitcher (大水罐)and a wash basin in their rooms and took care of these things there. The bathtub was a wash tub(澡盆)filled with water from the stove. Then the men and boys did. In most families this was Saturday night because Sundays they went to church.A small number of families did have running water. But that depended on whether there was a water system where they lived and on whether they could afford the plumbing(水管设施). Some people had bathtubs in their homes as early as 1895. "It might seem strange that people still want to listen to instead of watching television, but this is an unusual art form whose time has come again, "said David Amibrose, director of Beyond the Border, an international storytelling festival(节)in Wales."Some of the tales, like those of the Inuit from Canada, are thousands years old. So our storytellers have come from distant lands to connect us with the distance of time. " he said early this month. Two Inuit women, both in their mid 60s, are among the few remaining who can do Kntadjait, or throat singing, which has few words and much sound.Their art is governed by the cold of their surroundings, forcing them to say little but listen attentively. Ambrose started the festival in 1993, after several years of working with those reviving (coming back into use or existence)storytelling in Wales."It came out of a group of people who wanted to reconnect with traditions and as all the Welsh are storytellers, it was in good hands here." The flashes reflected light could be seen several miles away. The enemy did not know what the flashes meant, but other Greek soldiers could understand the messages.Roman soldiers in some places built long rows of signal towers. When they had a message to send, the soldiers shouted it from tower to tower. If there were enough towers and enough soldiers with loud voices, important news could be sent quickly over distance. In Africa, people learned to send messages by beating on a series of large drums(鼓). Each drum was kept within hearing distance of the next one. The drum beats were sent out in a special way that all the drummers understood. Though the messages were simple, they could be sent at great speed for hundreds of miles. In the eighteenth century, a French engineer found a new way to send short messages. In this way, a person held a flag in each hand and the arms were moved to various positions representing different letters of the alphabet. It was like spelling out words with flags and arms. Over a long period of time, people sent messages by all these different ways. If you could take a one pound packet of butter 4, 000 miles out from the earth, it would weigh only a quarter of a pound. Why would things weigh only a quarter as much as they do at the surface of the earth if we took them 4 000 miles out into space? The reason is this: All objects have a natural attraction for all other objects; this is called gravitational attraction, but this power of attraction between two objects gets weaker as they get farther apart. When the butter was at the surface of the earth, it was 4 000 miles from the centre (in other words the radius(半径)of the earth is 4 000 miles). When we took the butter 4 000 miles out, it was 8 000 miles from the centre, which is twice the distance. If you double the distance between two objects, their gravitational attraction decreases two times two. If you treble(翻三倍)the distance, it gets nine times weaker(three times three). If you take it four times as far away, it gets sixteen times weaker (four times four)and so on. 69. The best title for this passage is.[A]The Earth Weight [B]Weight in Space[C]Changing Weight on the Earth [D]Weight on and off the Earth70. We can feel things are heavy because.[A]weight is a fixed quality in an object[B]they are far away from the centre of the earth[C]of the earth's strong attraction for them[D]they are not taken away from the surface of the earth71. If the distance between two objects is shortened by half, their gravitational attraction will. [A]double [B]become four times stronger[C]be the same [D]get four times weaker72. Since this is new for many, some trips are certainly in order. If you are married, it is a good idea to encourage your husband and children to learn to cook a few simple meals while you are away. They will be much happier and probably enjoy the experience. If you will be eating a good meal alone, choose good restaurants. In the end, they will be much better for your digestion(消化). You may also find it useful to call the restaurant in advance and state that you will be eating alone. You will probably get better service and almost certainly a better table. Finally, and most importantly, anticipate(提前做准备)your travel needs as a businesswoman; this starts with lightweight luggage which you can easily manage even when fully packed. Take a folding(折叠)case inside your suitcase; it will come in extremely handy(极其方便)for dirty clothes, as well as for business documents and papers you no longer need on the trip. And make sure you have a briefcase so that you can keep currently required papers separate. Obviously, experience helps, but you can make things easier on yourself from the first by careful planning, so that right from the start you really can have a good trip!73. Who is the author's intended audience?[A]Working women who have no time for cooking.[B]Husbands and children of working women.[C]Working women who must travel on their own.[D]Hotel personnel who must attend to working women.74. Even a small at in London without a garden costs quite a lot to rent. With the same money, one can get a little house in the country with a garden of one's own. Then, in the country one can rest from the noise and hurry of the town. Even though one has to get up earlierand spend more time in trains or buses, one can sleep better at night and during weekends and on summer evenings, one can enjoy the fresh, clean air of the country. If one likes gardens, one can spend one's free time digging, planting, watering and other jobs which are needed in a garden. Then, when the flowers and vegetables come up, one has the reward of one who has shared the secret of nature. Some people, however, take no interest in country thing: for them, happiness lies in the town, with its cinemas and theatres, beautiful shops and busy streets, dance halls and restaurants. Such people would feel that their life was not worth living if they had to live it outside London. An occasional walk in one of the parks and a fortnight's(two weeks) visit to the sea every summer is all the country they want: the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those who are glad to get away from London every night.4. There are about 80 active volcanoes under the oceans. V olcanoes are both terrifying and fascinating. In order to understand why volcanic eruptions happen, it is necessary to know some things about how the Earth is made. The part of the Earth we live on is an 18-mile-thick layer of solid rock called the crust. Beneath the crust is a layer called the mantle (地幔), it is hot enough to melt some of the rock, creating magma (岩浆).When the magma finds cracks in the Earth's crust, it rises up. Gas bubbles (气泡) inside the magma grow bigger and try to escape as the molten rock gets closer to the Earth's surface. When the gas bubbles can't be held back any longer, the volcano erupts. Imagine shaking a soda bottle until the gas inside blows the cap off, and you can understand something of how a volcano erupts. If the magma is runny, and the gas can escape easily, the eruption is gentle. But if the magma is thick, the gas has to build up more pressure to escape. Then the eruption is explosive. When a volcano erupts, the molten rock that flows from it is called lava. The lava may run for some distance, or it may pile up near the volcano, making the mountain larger.During an explosive eruption, pieces of rock are thrown from the volcano. Scientists call these pyroclasts (火山碎屑). The smallest pyroclasts are called ash. Ash is often thrown into the atmosphere by the force of the eruption. Larger rocks, about walnut (胡桃) size, are called lapilli, Italian for “little stones”. The largest pyroclasts are called blocks if they are solid, or bombs if they are molten.V olcanoes have been a major force in the formation of our planet for thousands and thousands of years. Today geologists continually observe active volcanoes for signs of eruption. Using modern instruments, they are usually able to issue a warning before the volcano erupts.12.The author explains how the volcano erupts by ________.A.making a comparisonB.telling a storyC.using figuresD.asking questions13.Whether the eruption is explosive depends on ________.A.the temperature of the crustB.whether the magma is thickC.whether the magma is near the mantleD.the number of gas bubbles inside the magma14.We learn from Paragraph 5 that ________.A.ash is smaller than pyroclastsB.bombs are about walnut sizeC.blocks are larger than lapilliD.lapilli exist in the atmosphere15.The passage is most probably taken from ________.A.NationalGeographic B.EntertainmentWeeklyC.Health D.TVGuide第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

A Band Festival
One of the most important events of the year is the student band’s performance at the District Band Festival. When the group performs, three judges make comments on a piece of paper or on a tape recording. They take five things into consideration, such as tone, technique and stage presence. After the prepared performance, the band heads to another room for sight-reading1. Given seven minutes, the band sings through and then performs two new pieces for the first time to display their musical ability. The sight-reading judge then speaks to them about what they did well and how they can improve. The judges at the festival give letter grades to theband and base their decision on their overall musical performance. These grades use the following letters:“I”=excellent,“II”=good,“III”=fair, and“IV”and“V”being not at the standard. When choosing pieces for the band to perform, each member should carry his / her share of responsibility. Practicing after school is also expected. Attendance2 at these events is very important, because any difference from what has been rehearsed3 requires changing the balance of the whole group, and judges can only grade based on what they hear. The festival experience is always educational. It gives students a chance to perform challenging music and receive suggestions on what is going well and what can be better. All parents are heartily encouraged to attend and support their sons and daughters in this event!
