If allowed to go ahead, their proposal will bring significant and unwelcome changes to our community. While there are numerous reasons to object to McDonald’s in general, there are a number of specific issues relevant to this planning application.Traffic and SafetyWhile the government and local authorities are being encouraged to make decisions that reduce traffic levels and the dependence on car use, it is ironic that McDonald’s expansion plans revolve around “Drive-Thrus”.If their application is approved, we will experience a significant rise in traffic levels in our already busy area. The new traffic created will cause nuisance to existing traffic and increase the danger of accidents for pedestrians.Litter, Noise and SmellsWhile our area already suffers from noticeable litter and vandalism (故意破坏), the planned McDonald’s will only make things worse. The proposal includes very long opening hours (7 am-11 pm, 7 days a week), and will result in noise and disturbances at all hours for local residents. During the hot summer months, the smell from the kitchens, from waste storage and from litter discarded by customers may become offensive and attract vermin.Community and Local BusinessNeon lights, tacky signs and adverts will change the character of the area and may represent the start of an unwelcome trend in our locality. Existing local businesses will lose trade to multinationals that will drain the life-blood from our community. While McDonald’s claims to offer new job opportunities, the majority of the jobs will be low paid, non-skilled, part-time jobs with no guaranteed hours. As local businesses lose trade, people already employed may find themselves made redundant.McDonald’s must not be allowed to spoil our community!41. Choose the best answer for each statement or question from the four choices marked A, B, C and D, and mark the corresponding letter on the AnswerSheet with a single line throw the center.Passage OneThere are three basic methods by which companies can compete in foreign markets: exporting, licensing and other contractual agreements, and investment. Exporting is limited to physical goods. International freight forwarders, banks, and other specialists can assist companies wishing to export by handling many of the details regarding documentation and financing. Exporting is often the way a company initially becomes involved in international trade. Companies can gain valuable experience in international markets through exporting without being exposed to large capital losses.International licensing is another way for domestic companies to compete internationally. Under an international licensing agreement, domestic companies provide foreign companies with rights to some of their intangible assets, such as their patents, trade secrets, know-how, trademarks, or even their company name and logo. Domestic companies often provide some type of technical assistance to make sure the licensed properties are used properly. Similar contractual agreements may include franchising, technical agreements, service or management contracts, and other variations.Licensing and other contractual agreements typically involve the transfer of technology or human skills.Characteristically there is no equity investment by the international company in such agreements.Licensing and other contractual agreements can offer several advantages over or alternatives to exporting. They can prevent such import barriers as tariffs and quotas, since only intangible assets and services are being exchanged. In some cases a country's currency may experience a prolonged devaluation, making exports no longer profitable. Licensing agreements can overcome some of the risks associated with such currency fluctuations. There is also less of a political risk with licensing, which avoids the risks associated with expropriation (没收) of the international company's investment by the host country's government. Licensing can also provide the host country with much-desired technology transfer, so that its government is likely to view such agreements as beneficial.Investment is the third way in which companies can compete in other countries. Typically, foreign direct investment involves ownership by an international company of a manufacturing plant or other production facility in a target country. Investments may be sole ventures; or they may be joint ventures. Investment may be in a new establishment, or it may involve the acquisition of an existing enterprise.International companies generally make direct investments in foreign countries for one of the three reasons. One reason is to obtain raw materials from the host country. Most of the extracted resource from the host country is either exported back to the international company's home countryfor use in manufacturing there, or sold on the world market.A second reason is to source products at a lower cost. Sourcing investors establish manufacturing or assembly operations in a foreign country for the purpose of obtaining components or finished goods more cheaply than they could in their home country. These components or finished goods are then exported back to the investor's home country or shipped to other countries. The third and most prevalent reason is to penetrate local markets and compete internationally. As noted above, international companies use direct investment to establish a production base in another country for the purpose of competing in that country's marketplace.51. Which of the following is the advantage of exporting?A. Many specialists can assist exporters to handle the details in exporting.B. Exporting is the best way for exporters to be fully involved in international business.C. Companies would be less likely to lose large capital in international markets.D. It is unnecessary for exporters to deal with an entity in the target country.52. Under an international licensing agreement, domestic companies provide foreign companies with ______.A. sound fundsB. existing marketC. components or finished productsD. technical assistance and human skills53. What benefit do licensing and other contractual agreements bring about?A. They bring fewer political risks for the local government.B. There is no equity investment in such agreements.C. They can eliminate some import barriers.D. Exporters won't face currency fluctuations with such agreements.54. What form does foreign investment take?A. Sole ventures.B. Joint ventures.C. Overseas plants.D. All of the above.55. Why do international companies make direct investments in foreign countries?A. To acquire the existing enterprises in the target country.B. To make full use of the advanced technology in the target country.C. To get raw materials from the target country.D. To establish manufacturing plants in the target country.Passage TwoIs Wal-Mart, the king of “cheap”, straying from its low-priced strategy in favor of more upscale offerings? In its weekly sales update on Saturday, the world's largest retailer reported that October sales at its U. S. stores open at least a year rose less than the expected 0.5 percent. This figure is even lower than Wal-Mart’s recently reduced guidance of a 1 percent increase. It initially saw a 2 to 4 percent rise.Wal-Mart and other chain store merchants wilt report their final October sales results on Thursday. In his presentation to a group of Wall Street analyst this week, Wal-Mart CEO Lee Scott admitted the world’s biggest retailer has seen at least one big setback to its attempts to boost sales by offering fancier, higher- priced merchandise. "We have to understand why Metro 7 does well in 600 stores but [doesn’t] do well when you expand it [into more stores]," Scott said. Scott was referring to Wal-Mart's fashionable private- label clothing brand called “Metro 7” that the company launched last year. Compared to the basic apparels Wal-Mart typically sells, Metro 7 was a step up in fashion and price. Moreover, Wal-Mart supported the brand's launch with a splashy and expensive marketing campaign. The strategy worked, at first, but Wal-Mart couldn't get the product into stores fast enough. The retailer expanded Metro 7 into 600 stores quickly, hoping to strengthen the brand's early success. Then the unexpected happened. Metro 7 failed to take off in some markets. Wal-Mart had planned to roll out the line in more than 1,000 locations but has since scaled back that target to between 700 to 800 stores. “We over-expanded it. We had a pretty good idea. I think what happened is we didn't follow the strategy. We overloaded the fashion part. We need to remember who we are,” Scott said. “We need to have a little bit of fashion. If we try to do more with fashion, we're not going to do well,” he added. To that end, Wal-Mart in recent months set in motion a plan to court wealthier shoppers and boost profits and sales by introducing more upscale items that is trying to emulate Target's tremendous success with generate fatter profits. It would appear that Wal-Mart its "cheap-chic" merchandise approach. But some industry watchers warn that Wal-Mart is no Target.Target, the No.2 discounter, is now am ong the leaders in the “cheap-chic” space by being the first to enter into collaborations with high-profile designers like Mossimo and Todd Oldham. Despite its roots as Wal-Mart-like discounter, Targets become synonymous with the term "trendy.” Many consum ers say it’s "cool" to pay just a bit more, and walk out carrying Target's well-known bull’s-eye logo on their shopping bags. But retail experts said Wal-Mart simply isn't there yet in terms of changing its image. There are very few retailers with such a solid established image as Wal-Mart. To consumers Wal-Mart means everyday low prices.56. What was the goal set by Wal-Mart at the very beginning?A. 0.5 percent rise.B. 2-4 percent rise.C.1 percent increase.D.1.5 percent increase.57. What does “M etro 7” in the passage mean?A. A famous clothing brand from a Wal-Mart supplierB. A clothing brand from Wal-Mart.C. A fashionable clothing storeD. An upscale clothing company.58. Which of the following about “Metro 7” is TRUE?A. Metro 7 is a great success in all the markets.B. Metro 7 was a failure at the beginning.C. Metro 7 was launched to add a little bit of fashion to Wal-Mart.D. Metro 7 will be expanded quickly in the near future.59. What does “cheap-chic” mean in the passage?A. Cheap but splashy.B. Cheap and of poor quality.C. Expensive but of poor quality.D. Expensive and of good quality.60. According to the passage, what will Wal-Mart probably do in the future?A. Wal-Mart will still stick to its established former image.B. Wal-Mart will go on to capture the rich people.C. Wal-Mart will follow Target’s example in marketing.D. Wal-Mart will become trendy.Part III TRANSLATING & WRITING (40 minutes)Section ADirections:Translate the following passage into Chinese and write the Chinese version on the Answer Sheet.61. 1) What is Patagonia’s work environment like?Patagonia has freeform work environments which have bee mon enough that barefoot employees, cavorting pets and organic chefs hardly merit a second glance. But the bicycles, the surfboards, the solar panels, the Tibetan prayer flags, the shed full of convalescing owls and hawks all suggest that it is not traditional corporate-land, either. The place is all business, but it's business conducted upside down and inside out. Simply put, it's radical.2) How does Chouinard view average American businesses? To Chouinard, the average suit ranks somewhere between alcoholic and criminal on the respect scale, and American business, when powered by the endless consumption and discarding of stuff, is unimaginative at best and evil at worst, responsible for clear-cutting forests, polluting oceans, and bulldozing wetlands to make way for the next condo development. Its modus operandi is unsustainable growth, which he pares to an "out-of-control tumor."3) What was Chouinard’s first try in the business world?Back in Burbank, Chouinard installed a coal forge in his parents' garage and became a self-taught blacksmith, hammering out pitons - three-inch strips of steel used for anchoring climbing ropes. Chouinard's pitons were stronger and more elegant than their predecessors, a triumph of minimalist engineering. He sold them out of the back of his car for $1.50 and tried to live on the proceeds.4) What is the “dirtbag” way aording to Chouinard? How does he view it?Chouinard describes as the "dirtbag" way as living as close to the wild as possible with as little as possible. To Chouinard, the “dirtbag” way never seemed like privation. Rather, it was freedom.5) How do Chouinard and Malina define Patagonia? It wouldn't release toxins into rivers or cause nervous breakdowns or chase endless growth. It wouldn't make disposable crap that people didn't really need. Anything it produced would be of the highest quality, manufactured in the most responsible way. When the surf was up or the powder wafted down, employees would be where they ought to be: outside. If an employee's child was sick, the parent would also be where he ought to be: at home. They would keep Patagonia privately held and say no to anything that promised their values.6) What big lessons did Chouinard learn from scaling the likes of Yosemite’s EL Capitan? The biggest was that reaching the summit had nothing to do with where you arrived and everything to do with how you got there. Likewise, he thought, with business: The point was not to focus on making money; focus on doing things right, and the profits would e.7) Who are Patagonia’s potential customers? There is no one type of customer here. There are couples pushing double-wide strollers, teenagers and grandparents, and even a woman in high heels.8) What was the result of Chouinard’s effort to use organic cotton?Patagonia's cotton sales rose 25 percent and, more important, established an organic-cotton industry so that other panies could cross over. Demand grew and prices decreased, leading to even more demand. In xx, Wal-Mart became the world's largest purchaser of organic cotton.9) Summarize the measures that Patagonia took in search of greener materials.a) use organic cotton instead of non-organic cottonb) use recycled polyester to producec) stop using Chlorine in wool productsd) use a product made of crushed crab shells for odor control instead of antimicrobial silver which is a groundwater pollutant.e) advise customers to use the shipping by ground or sea—which is more energy-saving than airfreight.10) Why does Chouinard plan to shift his business to watersports?Climate change. "We're getting into the surf market, because it's never going to snow again, and the waves are going to get bigger and bigger,"。
