2015年河南省高三高考押题测试英语(4)命题人:赵会强2015年5月第二部分:阅读理解(共20小题,每小题2分,满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项中选出最佳答案。
ASettling in to life at OxfordWhen you first arrive in Oxford, it may take a little while for you to find your way around. The university is a large organization that is fully integrated into the city and has been evolving for 800 years. Some of the first things our students do when they arrive include finding a bike(most students in Oxford find cycling is the best way to go around), setting up a bank account, getting their computer and mobile phone working, finding their department, getting to know their college and working out the best places to socialize. One of the major events you will experience shortly after “coming up”to Oxford is matriculation. Matriculation is held at the University’s Sheldonian Theatre and is the ceremony at which you are formally admitted to the university.International students are invited to an orientation day at the start of the academic year. Sessions run throughout the day that will give you practical information about living and studying in UK and introduce you to other graduate students from for all over the world who are starting their studies at Oxford at the same time as you, as well as to current Oxford graduate students and staff who will be able to help and advise you. The day covers topics such as studying and learning in the Oxford system, University services, information on living in Britain and culture differences, as well as addressing practical issues such as employment, immigration and visas, health and safety. You can choose which talks to attend and at the end of the day there is a social hour so you can meet fellow students.Another good thing to experience early on is college dining. Most colleges have a tradition of regular formal hall dinners, which consist of three or four courses, and the atmosphere of an evening out in a nicerestaurant. On some of these occasions you can invite people around to your college for dinner and then they may return the favor. In this way, you can get to know people studying your own and other subjects at the same time as visiting many of the historical college grounds and dining halls.Further information on your first few weeks at Oxford is available via the Students Gateway on our website, and you can get first-hand accounts of what life at Oxford is like by watching videos of students talking about their experiences on our Wall of 100 Faces.A. They arrived in Oxford and settled down on campus.B. They received the offer from the admission office.C. They met the staff and took some required courses.D. They experienced the matriculation in the university.22. Which is an orientation important for international students?A. It is a good chance to ask the staff for help.B. It offers practical information about living and studying.C. It helps get students’ computers hooked to the Internet.D. It can help deal with the problem of culture differences.23. “return the favor”in the passage probably means ______________.A. inviting you for dinnerB. visiting your historic college in returnC. sharing favorite videosD. providing you with some good adviceBWhen I was in college, a man named Henry worked as a custodian (看门人) in our student union building. White-haired, with a Pennsylvania Dutch accent, Henry could usually be seen in a baseball cap, a T-shirt and a pair of jeans. He was the custodian, and he was the most respected and most well-known person in the building. Everyone loved Henry, and it was because of all the implicit ways he expressed his love for everyone around him. Henry didn’t have to say, “I love you.” He lived his love.Henry was always excited when he met someone new, and he wanted to know everything about them. He felt it was important to do things for people he valued. And Henry seemed to value everyone he met. He brought in articles or cartoons for certain people, went out of his way to introduce people to each other, kept dozens of names and birthdays in his wallet so he could send cards, and helped students keep in touch with graduates who had written to him. He even assisted students who didn’t have enough money to buy their books.Henry taught me --- and many others he supported --- how to live life tothe fullest. Not by skydiving or exploring some foreign countries, but by appreciating where you are in life and valuing those around you.The funny thing is that despite all he did and taught us, Henry truly believed that he was the lucky one --- that he was the one who was gaining so much by getting to know us. But all of us who remember Henry know that we were the ones who were truly blessed. We will never forget the man who taught us that best way to say “I love you” often has little to do with the words.24. What does the word “implicit” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?A. silentB. properC. attractiveD. unbelievable25. According to the passage, working as a custodian in a college, Henry ______.A. made international travels to live a full lifeB. was a role model of how to be a caring personC. was busy organizing former students’ reunionsD. gathered plenty information about the needy students26. Henry was always excited to meet new people because ______.A. it would make people think highly of himB. he was the most popular person in the collegeC. it was part of his responsibility as a custodianD. he treasured everything around him in his life27. Which of the following word cannot be used to describe Henry?A. kind.B. adventurous.C. supportive.D. sympathetic.CWhen a big boat, like a cruise ship, goes through the ocean, it often creates waves. This happens when the large engines on the back of the cruise ship cause the water on the ocean’s surface move up and down violently. These waves move out from the boat in both directions. If you are captaining a smaller boat, you’d better steer clear of a ship’s wake, so that your boat is not surfing on the waves, causing it to overturn.A wave is a pattern of motion. When you look at a wave, it may appear as simply water moving across the surface of the ocean. In fact, this is false. The water is actually not moving in the same direction as the wave. While the wave itself -- the pattern of motion – is moving across the surface of the ocean, the water is actually moving in a circular motion, which brings the water molecules back to their original position. The water merely gives the appearance of moving forward. If this is confusing, think of the kind of wave you do at a baseball stadium. Viewed from a distance, the wave is clearly moving across the stadium. But the thing that makes up the wave – the people – are not moving across the stadium, they’re just moving up and down in their seats. This isjust like the water in an ocean wave. A lot of water is moving up and down, which gives water the appearance of moving along with the wave.Surfers pay a lot of attention to waves. If you’re not in an area where the waves are suitable for surfing, then you can’t surf. Usually, surfers gather in areas known for big waves – waves that rise high off the ocean’s surface. If the wave is bigger, then the surfer is often able to surf for longer distances and perform more tricks. The height of a wave is known as its amplitude ( 振幅,幅度,波幅) . If you could make a wave freeze, then you could measure the wave’s amplitude by running a tape measure from the ocean’s surface to the very peak of the wave. All waves can be measured using amplitude and wavelength. While the waves created by a boat have very small amplitude – sometimes as small as a few centimeters – the wavelength can be very short, as lots of waves are being generated. By contrast, a tsunami has very high amplitude, sometimes more than 100 feet, but a relatively long wavelength, as it’s a high wave.Waves generated in the same way can have great differences in amplitude and wavelength. For example, think back to the cruise ship. While each ship creates waves caused by the movement of the boat, the properties of each of the waves may be very different. For example, a larger cruise ship, with powerful engines, may create a wave that has high amplitude and a short wavelength. However, if the ship’s engines slow down, they may then start creating less powerful waves at a slower rate. This would cause the waves’amplitude to decrease, but its wavelength to increase.28. What does the phrase “steer clear of a cruise ship’s wake” in the 1st paragraph mean?A. keep awake while steering a shipB. get a clear view of what is aheadC. keep away from the cruise shipD. follow the cruise ship very closely29. The author gives an example of wave people do in the stadium in order to _____________.A. describe how excited people are in a basketball stadiumB. clear the confusion over measuring the wave’s amplitudeC. demonstrate how to make waves in a basketball stadiumD. explain why the water appears to move along the waves30. The last paragraph gives us the impression that ________________.A. the wave’s amplitude may vary, but its wavelength remain the sameB. the more powerful the ships engines are, the higher the waves they generateC. the amplitude of a wave depends on the direction the water moves forwardD. measuring the amplitude and wavelength of waves is not quite easy31. What is this passage mainly about?A. How waves are created and measured.B. What makes the sea water move forwards.C. Why people create waves in the stadium.D. How to steer a cruise ship in the rough sea.DAre you an optimist? Do you look at your glass and see it as half full? Do you believe that every cloud has a silver lining and that things generally turn outfor the best? Do you believe that if something is meant to be, it will be? If you reply “yes” to all of these questions, then you are an optimist. You probablyare enthusiastic, cheerful and outgoing. You may be successful at work and in love. But you may be misguided because things don’t turn out for the best. You may believe that when one door closes another one opens (for example, you may fail to obtain a new job; another chance will come around soon). Wrong. When one door closes, another door slams in your face. That’s bitter reality. Now a book has been published which confirms what pessimists have suspected all along. It’s called The Positive Power of Defensive Pessimism. Its author argues that defensive pessimism can lead to positive results. Defensive pessimism is a strategy used to manage fear, anxiety and worry. Defensive pessimists prepare for the things by setting low outcomes for themselves. They carefully consider everything that may go wrong and plan for ways to handle these problems. And this gives them a sense of control. Lawrence Sanno, a psychology professor, says, “What’s interesting about defensive pessimists is that they tend to be very successful people, so their low opinion of the situation’s outcomes is not realistic. They use it to motivate themselves to perform better.”So far, so good. This is not rocket science. Defensive pessimists prepare carefully and consider what might go wrong, whether at work, on date or even in a sports game. It makes sense to have an alternative plan. There are many sayings in English urging caution, like “Don’t count your chickens until they hatch.” To have a confident and optimistic approach to life’s problems is good. But listen to what Woody Alien, the American comedian says, “Confidence is what you have before you understand the problem.”There are pros and cons to being an optimist and a pessimist. Don’t feel bad if you see the glass half empty. You are a realist. But lighten up and hook up with someone who sees the same glass half full.32. What’s the passage mainly about?A. The benefits of defensive pessimism.B. A book that has recentlybeen published.C. The dangers of being too optimistic.D. How to become successful in life.33. The underlined sentence “This is not rocket science” (Para. 4) means __________.A. there is no real proofB. it is quite simple to understandC. the cost is not so highD. it’s not a dangerous thing to do34. Which of the following English expressions would a defensive pessimist believe?A. Whatever will be, will be.B. The glass is half full not half empty.C. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.D. Every cloud has a silver lining.35. AMy grandparents were married for over half a century, and played their own special game the time they had met each other. The goal of their game was to write the word “shmily” in a surprise place for the other to find. They took turns leaving “shmily” around the ho use, and as soon as one of them discovered it, it was their turn to hide it once more. They dragged “shmily” with their fingers through the sugar and flour containers to await whoever was preparing the next meal. “Shmily” was written in the steam left on t he mirror after a hot shower, where it would reappear bath after bath. There was no end to the places where “shmily” would pop up. Little notes with “shmily” were found on car seats, or taped to steering wheels. The notes were put inside shoes and left und er pillows. “Shmily” was written in the dust upon the mantel(壁炉架)and traced in the ashes of the fireplace. This mysterious word was as much a part of my grandparents’ house as the furniture. It took me a long time before I was able to fully appreciate my grandparents’ game. Skepticism has kept me from believing in true love—one that is pure and enduring (持久的). However, I never doubted my grandparents’ relationship. It was based on passionate affection which not everyone is lucky enough to experience. But there was a dark cloud in my grandparents’ life: my grandmoth er had breast cancer. The disease had first appeared ten years earlier. As always, Grandpa was with her every step of the way. He comforted her in their yellow room, painted that way so that she could always be surrounded by sunshine, even when she was too sick to go outside. But my grandmother grew steadily weaker until, finally, she could not leave the house any more. Then one day, what we all dreaded finally happened. Grandma was gone.“Shmily.” It was written in yellow on the pink ribbons of my grandmother’s funeral bouquet (花束). As the crowd thinned and the last mourners turned to leave, Grandpa stepped up to my grandmother’s coffin and, taking a shaky breath, he began to sing to her. Through his tears and grief, the song came: S-h-m-i-l-y: See How Much I Love You.21. The first paragraph is mainly about ________.A.what the word “shmily” meansB.how the author’s grandparents played their special gameC.how the author appreciated her grandparents’ gameD.how the author’s grandparents cared for each other22. The underlined phrase “pop up” in Paragraph 1 means ________.A. appearB. changeC. surviveD. work23. According to the passage, the author _________.A. thought the game was meaninglessB. believes everyone can experience true loveC. doubted the existence of true love at firstD. sometimes left “shmily” around the house24. Grandpa tried to make Grandma comfortable by _______.A. singing songs to her every dayB. painting the room yellowC. encouraging her to go outsideD. helping her take a hot shower every da yBA very close friend phoned me this weekend and asked a specific question about earning a few extra dollars each month online. For the benefit of keeping her name and details secret, I will call her Annie in this article. You see Annie suffers from a severe form of inaction syndrome; she is full of great ideas that never materialize into cash and she is having a problem finding the link that will achieve this.Somebody once said that knowledge is power, yet we constantly find from readers of our website that they have knowledge to burn and still do not have power. Just look at the academics in universities all around the world; they have so much knowledge that they should control the wealth of the world. In truth they work for peanuts and very few of them ever achieve the power of independence. So knowledge certainly isn’t power. Therefore, we should change that “wise” statement to: “Power is the ability to use knowledge to your own benefit.”That paragraph was inserted because Annie is a typical academic—strong on talks and plans but a little weaker on actions. In the period of a twenty-minute conversation, she expounded(阐述)a whole list of plans and ideas to make the extra few hundred dollars each month she was seeking. Any one of her many ideas was a potential money maker, but she had taken action on none of them. At one time she said, “I’m lost as to what to do next.”That was my cue(提示)to get involved. “Take action,” I advised. All that is wrong is that Annie was inactive without knowing it. In five minutes we drew up a plan of action and agreed to talk again in a month to review progress. When we finished the conversation, she sounded much happier and more motivated than when we started. Annie just needs a little push into beneficial action.25. What’s the problem with Annie?A. She has too many great ideas.B. She never puts her ideas into practice.C. She suffers from a strange illness.D. She knows little about making money online.26. What is the most important according to the author?A. The ability to use o ne’s knowledge.B. The ability to acquire knowledge.C. A great deal of knowledge.D. A good understanding of oneself.27. What can we infer from the last paragraph?A. Annie will succeed in later life.B. Annie is going towards success.C. Annie doesn’t realize her problems.D. Annie talks too much in daily life.CIncreasingly, Americans are becoming their own doctors, by going online to diagnose their symptoms, order home health tests or medical devices, or even self-treat their illnesses with drugs from Internet pharmacies(药店).Some avoid doctors because of the high cost of medicalcare, especially if they lack health insurance. Or they may stay because they find it embarrassing to discuss their weight, alcohol consumption or couch potato habits. Patients may a1so fear what they might learn about their health, or they distrust physicians because of negative experiences in the past. But playing doctors can also be a deadly game.Every day, more than six million Americans turn to the Internet for medical answers—most of them aren't nearly skeptical enough of what they find. A 2002 survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that 72 percent of those surveyed believe all or most of what they read on health websites. They shouldn't. Look up “headache”, and the chances of finding reliable and complete information, free from a motivation for commercial gain, are only one in ten, reports an April 2005 Brown Medical School study. Of the l69 websites the researchers rated, only l6 scored as “high quality”. Recent studies found faulty facts about all sorts of other disorders, causing one research team to warn that a large amount of incomplete, inaccurate and even dangerous information exists on the Internet. The problem is that most people don't know the safe way to surf the Web. “They use a search engine 1ike Google, get l8 trillion choices and start clicking. But that's risky, because almost anybody can put up a site that looks authoritative, so it's hard to know whether what you're reading is reasonable or not,” says Dr. Sarah Bass from the National Cancer Institute.28. According to the text, an increasing number of Americans .A. are suffering from mental disordersB. turn to Internet pharmacies for helpC. like to play deadly games with doctorsD. are skeptical about surfing medical websites29. Some Americans stay away from doctors because they .A. find medical devices easy to operateB. prefer to be diagnosed online by doctorsC. are afraid to face the truth of their healthD. are afraid to misuse their health insurance30. According to the study of Brown Medical School .A. more than 6 million Americans distrust doctorsB. only 1/l0 of medical websites aim to make a profitC. about l/10 of the websites surveyed are of high qualityD. 72% of health websites offer incomplete and faulty facts31. Which of the following is the author's main argument?A. It's cheap to se1f-treat your own illness.B. It's embarrassing to discuss your bad habits.C. It's reasonable to put up a medical website.D. It's dangerous to be your own doctor.DI’d always dreamed of exploring Africa, ever since I read my first Tarzan comic as a child. Finally, in 2004, to celebrate my 60th birthday, I went to Tanzania to experience a safari and climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. Seated next to me on the flight was Tanzania’s minister of water and wildlife development. We talked for thousands of miles, and he arranged me to visit a school. When I toured the school, I was shocked. The leaky roofs turned the dirt floors into mud during the rainy season, and the walls couldn’t keep out the heat, cold or bugs. Theschool was in need of all material goods, but the kids possessed great human spirit. It broke my heart that these children had to struggle to survive, so I asked the headmaster what it would cost to feed them. As little as 20 cents per child per day, he told me. Immediately I got home, I founded Kids of Kil imanjaro. Since then we’ve grown to provide hot lunches for nearly 13,000 schoolchildren every day. The free lunch program has eased a major problem the youngsters face.I know a good education could really make a difference in these children’s lives. My p arents always stressed the importance of education. I paid my own way through college in Tokyo by teaching English to students and businesspeople. After attending university I moved to San Francisco, when I was 25 years old. In 1978 I realized my American dream when I founded my own company. My success all started with a good education. It’s amazing that something as simple as a nutritious lunch can change and enrich so many lives. Giving young people a better, healthier life can inspire them to go all the way through college and lead a movement that transforms their country.32. Why did the author go to Tanzania to celebrate his 60th birthday?A.He was curious about what Africa was like.B.He was concerned about the Africans’ miserable life.C.He wanted to get an idea of the area’s wildlife.D.He hoped to lead a movement that would transform his country.33. What is the main purpose of Kids of Kilimanjaro?A.To make sure the African kids are mentally healthy.B.To spread knowledge among the African kids.C.To build new schools for the African kids.D.To protect the African kids from hunger.34. What is the correct sequence of the following events?a.“I” founded “my” first company.b.“I” founded Kids of Kilimanjaro.c.“I” read “my” first Tarzan comic.d.“I” moved to San Francisco.A.a, c, d, bB. a, d, c, bC. c, a, d, bD. c, d, a, b35. AI went to the Tsavo National Park in northern Kenya for a film. We set off early for a distant water hole. A huge elephant covered with dry mud, drank calmly and deeply. He might have traveled 50 km to reach the water. He wasn’t going to hurry now. He’d drink a while and rest in the shade, and then drink again or so we thought. What actually happened was that he drank deeply and stepped away. Then he suddenly fell down. Within minutes he was dead.We called animal doctor Jeremiah Poghon immediately. He removed the head of a poisoned arrow from the elephant’s body, and let out over 100 liters of pus (胺)-the result of the elephant’s meeting with a poacher(偷猎者)months before.Today's poacher shoots from a blind. He fires an arrow, covered with poison, into the body of an elephant. If the poacher is lucky, the elephant might die in an hour or two; if not, he might have to follow the elephant for days before it dies. Often the arrow head fails to kill the elephant at once-it doesn't mean the poison won't finally kill the elephant, but it will be a slow death.Living in Tsavo through these times, I could see the results of poaching from time to time. When I think about the death of that elephant, what stays with me is the extraordinary silence aft er the shocking sound of his body hitting the ground. I took some comfort from the knowledge that as the dead body returned to the soil, some animals would benefit-but I couldn't escape the feeling that with the death of such a large animal, the world seemed to be a poorer and emptier place.21. While filming near the water hole, the author and his team ________.A. knew the elephant was injuredB. found the elephant acted violentlyC. tried their best to save the elephantD. thought the elephant was in good condition22. People and animals have been doing what they always do to prepare for the cold months. Squirrels, for example, have been busy gathering nuts from trees. Well, scientists have been busy gathering information about what the squirrels do with the food they collect. They examined differences between red squirrels and gray squirrels in the American state of Indiana. The scientists wanted to know how these differences could affect the growth of black walnut trees. The black walnut is the nut of choice for both kinds of squirrels. The black walnut tree is also a central part of some hardwood forests.Rob Swihart of Purdue University did the study with Jake Goheen, a former Purdue student now at the University of New Mexico. The two researchers estimate that several times as many walnuts grow when gathered by gray squirrels as compared to red squirrels. Gray squirrels and red squirrels do not store nuts and seeds in the same way. Gray squirrels bury nuts one at a time in a number of places. But they seldom remember where they buried every nut. So some nuts remain in the ground. Conditions are right for them to develop and grow in the following spring. Red squirrels, however, store large groups of nuts above ground. Professor Swihart calls “death traps for seeds”.Gray squirrels are native to Indiana. But Professor Swihart says their numbers began to decrease as more forests were cut for agriculture. Red squirrels began to spread through the state during the past century. The researchers say red squirrels are native to forests that stay green all year, unlike walnut trees. They say the cleaning of forest land for agriculture has helped red squirrels invade Indiana. Jake Goheen calls them a sign of an environmental problem more than a cause.25.The study done by Rob Swihart and Jake Goheen is to ________.A. find out the living conditions for squirrelsB. do something to get rid of squirrelsC. learn squirrels’ influence on black walnut treesD. save the forests in the American state of Indiana26.The difference between gray squirrels and red squirrels mainly lies in ________.A. the way they gather the walnutB. the place they store the walnutsC. the number of the nuts they can collectD. the fact that the gray squirrels have a bad memory27.When Professor Swihart says “death traps for seeds”, he actually means that ________.河南教考资源信息网 版权所有·侵权必究A. nuts above the ground will not develop into plantsB. red squirrels eat more nuts than gray squirrelsC. gray squirrels and red squirrels will have severe fightsD. seeds can be traps for other animals in the forest28.According to the passage, which of the following is true?A. Gray squirrels do more harm to the forest than red squirrels.B. Red squirrels and gray squirrels have helped the spread of walnut trees.C. The cleaning of forest land benefits gray squirrels directly.D. Human beings should bear some responsibility for the decreasing number of graysquirrels.CLa Gomera is the only place in the world that has a whistle language. We do not know how and why it began because we do not know the complete history of the island. But we can certainly imagine the reasons for the beginning of the whistle language. There are many deep valleys on the island. A person on one side of a valley can not easily shout to a person on the other side. But he can whistle and be heard. Some of the best whistlers can be heard from four miles away and the record is seven miles. The people who live on the island usually have good teeth, and this helps them to whistle well. They must also have good ears so that they can hear other whistlers. We can understand why the whistle language continues. It is very useful on the island, and quite easy to learn. When somebody is hurt or ill, the whistle language takes the place of telephone. If the sick person is quite far away from the town, people pass the message from one to another. A boy guarding cattle on a hillside whistles to a man fishing from his boat. The last one is able to describe the trouble fully and exactly to the doctor in town. People help one another in the same way when a car breaks down or a cow is lost. The whistle language is hundreds of years old, and probably it will continue to live on for hundreds of years more. Radio and TV often kill the special ways of s peaking in different parts of a country. But on La Gomera you are nobody if you cannot whistle. Perhaps soon after TV arrives on the island, people there will be whistling the news and other facts and opinions.29. If a person on La Gomera is ill, ______.A. the whistle language will help pass the message to the doctorB. people will take him to town by carriageC. his family will take him to the hospitalD. others will phone the doctor in town30. La Gomera is special because ______.A. we don’t know its complete historyB. people have to shout if they want to communicateC. people there have good teeth and earsD. people there use the whistle language to communicate with each other31. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A. The whistle language has been used for hundreds of years on the island, but will notbe used any longer.B. The record shows that one best whistler can be heard by others from seven miles away.32. Which of the following will be the best title of this passage?A. The Secret LanguageB. Different students take different attitudes to failure. Some fall in low spirits when they don't do well in the exams. They usually lose heart and no longer study hard as before. But most students take an active attitude towards failure. They encourage themselves to be self-confident. They found out and analyze the causes so that they will no longer make similar mistakes.I agree with those with active attitudes. As we all know, failure is the mother of success. Even great men have failed many times before they succeeded. So we must deal with our failure correctly.2015年高考英语作文预测真题二根据下面中文提示写一篇150词左右的短文。
2015年高考押题英语卷2附答案
2015年高考押题英语卷2第一部分阅读理解第一节阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在题卡上将该项涂黑。
AExercise seems to be good for the human brain, with many recent studies suggesting that regular exercise improves memory and thinking skills. But an interesting new study asks whether the apparent cognitive benefits from exercise are real or just a placebo effect —that is, if we think we will be “smarter” after exercise, do our brains respond accordingly? The answer has significant implications for any of us hoping to use exercise to keep our minds sharp throughout our lives. While many studies suggest that exercise may have cognitive benefits, recently some scientists have begun to question whether the apparently beneficial effects of exercise on thinking might be a placebo effect. So researchers at Florida State University in Tallahassee and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign decided to focus on expectations, on what people anticipate that exerci se will do for thinking. If people’s expectations jibe (吻合) closely with the actual benefits, then at least some of those improvements are probably a result of the placebo effect and not of exercise. For the new study, which was published last month in PLOS One, the researchers recruited 171 people through an online survey system, they asked half of these volunteers to estimate by how much a stretching and toning regimens (拉伸运动) performed three times a week might improve various measures of thinking. The other volunteers were asked the same questions, but about a regular walking program. In actual experiments, stretching and toning program generally have little if any impact on people’s cognitive skills. Walking, on the other hand, seems to substantially improve thinking ability. But the survey respondents believed the opposite, estimating that the stretching and toning program would be more beneficial for the mind than walking. The estimates of benefits from walking were lower. These data, while they do not involve any actual exercise, are good news for people who do exercise. “The results from our study suggest that the benefits of aerobic exercise are not a placebo effect,” said Cary Stothart, a graduate student in cognitive psychology at Florida State University, who led the study. If expectations had been driving the improvements in cognition seen in studies after exercise, Mr. Stothart said, then people should have expected walking to be more beneficial for thinking than stretching. They didn’t, implying that the changes in the brain and thinking after exercise are physiologically genuine. The findings are strong enough to suggest that exercise really does change the brain and may, in the process, improve thinking, Mr. Stothart said. That conclusion should encourage scientists to look even more closely into how, at a molecular level, exercise remodels the human brain, he said. It also should encourage the rest of us to move, since the benefits are, it seems, not imaginary, even if they are in our head.1. Why did the researchers at the two universities conduct the research?A. To discover the placebo effect in the exercise.B. To prove the previous studies have a big drawback.C. To test whether exercise can really improve cognition.D. To encourage more scientists to get involved in the research.2. What can we know about the research Cary Stothart and his team carried out?A. They employed 171 people to take part in the actual exercise.B. The result of the research removed the recent doubt of some scientists.C. The participants thought walking had a greater impact on thinking ability.D. Their conclusion drives scientists to do research on the placebo effect.3. What might be the best title for the passage?A. Is it necessary for us to take exercise?B. How should people exercise properly?C. What makes us smarter during exercise?D. Does exercise really make us smarter?BThe current Ebola (埃博拉病毒) outbreak in western and central Africa has infected at least 3,069 people, including 1,552 dead, making it the largest outbreak in history. Ebola is a deadly virus —about 60 percent of people infected with it have died. How is Ebola doing its harm? When a person becomes infected with Ebola, the virus damages the body’s immune (免疫的) cells, which defend against infection, said a researcher at Lancaster University. But if a person’s immune system can stand up to this attack, then he is more likely to survive the disease. The patients that survive it best are those who don’t get such a bad disadvantage in immune system. But if the body isn’t able to get rid of this attack, then the immune system becomes less able to regulate (调节) itself. This means the immune system is more likely to run out of control, leading to a drop in blood pressure, multi-organ failure and eventually death. What are the common symptoms of the disease?Fever. Headache. Joint and muscle aches. Weakness. Diarrhea. V omiting. Stomach pain. Lack of appetite. Chills. Rash. Redness in the eyes. Hiccups. Cough. Sore throat. Chest pain. Difficult breathing or swallowing. Bleeding inside and outside of the body. How to prevent the spread of Ebola?Ebola can be spread primarily via direct contact with patients, specifically the blood and fluids of an infected patient. We should avoid contact with infected patients and objects such as clothing, bedding, and needles used by them. Avoid areas where infections have been reported. For now, the disease has only been confirmed in central and West Africa, four cases in America and Europe. Avoid eating wild-caught bush meat. Researchers have suspected that the disease came to humans via animals, probably through the meat of primates(灵长类). If you’re in an area where the disease has been reported, avoid purchasing, eating, or handling wild game to stay on the safe side.Wear protective medical clothing if you’re around infected patients. Extreme caution is necessary. Hospital workers must use masks, gloves, goggles, and gowns, which needed to be worn at all times if y ou’re around infected patients. How Do People Survive Ebola?Doctors don’t know for certain who will survive Ebola, and there is no specific treatment or cure for the disease. Although in the minority, some people do recover from infection. Our suggestions include:Maintain your electrolytes (电解质) and body liquid. Sports drinks can be used. Monitor your blood pressure and control it if necessary. Dropping blood pressure may be a serious sign of infection. Breathe in an oxygen-rich environment. Quickly address any symptoms o f infection. Be honest about when and where you’re feeling pain.4. Ebola causes the death of a human being by ________.A. attacking him with high feverB. regulating his immune systemC. damaging his immune cellsD. harming all his organs directly5. What is NOT mentioned as the symptom of Ebola?A. Fever and chills.B. Swallowing difficulty.C. Loss of blood.D. High blood pressure.6. In order not to be infected by Ebola, we should _________.A. have the clothing of the infected cleanedB. avoid eating wild animals like monkeysC. not travel to Africa, America or EuropeD. stay at home without going anywhere7. It is true that ________.A. a certain number of people survive EbolaB. human has found a special cure for EbolaC. oxygen can save infected people’s livesD. low blood pressure is surely caused by EbolaCThe term “Industry 4.0” refers to the fourth industrial revolution. The first industrial revolution was the production of goods with machines like steam engines, which was followed by the second industrial revolution that introduced mass production with the help of electric power, followed by the digital revolution —the use of electronics and IT in production.Industry 4.0 is a high-tech project, which promotes the computerization of manufacturing (制造业). The basic principle of Industry 4.0 is that by connecting machines, work pieces and systems, we are creating intelligent networks along the entire value chain that can control each other automatically. The goal is the Smart Factory, which adapts well and uses resources efficiently as well as linking customers and business partners with great intelligence. Technological basis are the Internet systems and advanced factories. Experts believe that Industry 4.0 could be a reality in about 10 to 20 years. So, what effects does this change have on the classic manufacturing? According to an expert, “it is highly likely that the world of production will become more and more networked until everything is connected with ev erything else.” Networks and processes have so far been limited to one factory. But in the time of Industry 4.0, the boundaries (界限) of individual factories will most likely no longer exist. Instead, they will be lifted in order to inter-connect multiple factories or even geographical regions. How is an Industry 4.0 factory different from a today’s factory? In current industry environment, providing high-end quality service or product with the least cost is the key to success. Factories are trying to increase their profit as much as possible. In the time of Industry 4.0, various data sources are available to provide worthwhile information about different aspects of the factory. Using data for understanding the current condition and checking faults and failures is a natural thing. The sharing of information around the clock and around the globe will enable these connected systems to manage themselves independently, work more efficiently and identify any errors quickly. The good news is that Europe is much better prepared for the Industry 4.0 revolution than one might think. Europe will position itself as a pioneer in the fourth revolution. Industry 4.0 is a project in the high-tech strategy of the German government. Meanwhile, in the U.S., some companies are also working hard on it. But the success of industry depends on whether business and politics can work together. It’s not only politics that needs to help open the door for Industry 4.0. Every company is advised to seize the new digital opportunities.8. What marks the coming of Industry 4.0?A. Steam engines.B. Mass production.C. Use of electronics.D. Intelligent networks.9. Industry 4.0 will probably result in ________ in the world of manufacturing.A. production limited to an individual factoryB. everything connected with everything elseC. networks and processes no longer existingD. classic factories stopping their competition10What’s the meaning of the underlined part in Para. 4?A. Sharing information of the world time.B. Global news broadcast at any time.C. Instant worldwide information exchange.D. Spreading news widely on the hour.11. According to the last paragraph, who is the most active in pushing Industry 4.0?A. The European companies.B. The American government.C. The American companies.D. Popular book picks have been Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird,Ernest Gaines’s A Lesson Before Dying, and Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451.“One City One Book” programs take the idea of a localized book discussion club and expand it to cover a whole city. The first such program was “If All of Seattle Read the Same Book” in 1998,started by Nancy Pearl atSeattle Public Library’s Washington Center for the Book. The book chosen for the program was The Sweet Hereafter by Russell Banks, written in 1991.Other cities copied the idea, and the Library of Congress listed 404 programs occurring in 2007.Each city’s program has its own goals; These typically include building a sense of community and promoting literacy. Nancy Pearl warns against expecting too much from a program:“Keep in mind that this i s a library program,it’s not an exercise in civics, and that it’s not intended to have literature cure the racial divide. This is about a work of literature.”Programs typically involve more than having everyone read the same book. Some other activities that have been included are:book discussion sessions, scholarly lectures on the book or related topics,a visit by the author, exhibits, related arts programming (especially showing a movie of the book if there is one),and integration into school curricula. In Boston the “One City One Story” program used shorter stories and distributed tens of thousands of free copies of the story over the course of a month.American Library Association puts out a detailed step-by-step guide on how to organize a local program, including the critical step of picking the one book. The Center for the Book at the Library of Congress tracks all known programs and the books they have used.12.“One City One Book” programs________.A.ask everyone in a city to donate one book B.can rid a city of racial divide through readingC.choose short stories for people to read D.encourage everyone in a city to read and discuss the same book 13.We know from the second paragraph that “One City One Book” programs________.A.became popular very quickly B.have been held more than 400 times in SeattleC.were sponsored by the Library of Congress D.reached its peak in 200714.We can infer from the third paragraph that Nancy Pearl________.A.expects much from the programs B.doesn’t expect that the programs would run so wellC.has a practical attitude towards the programs Dbelieves the programs will push forward community building 15.What kind of role does American Library Association play in the programs?A.It picks out the city which runs the programs well.
ABefore he sailed round the world alone, Francis Chichester had already surprised his friends several times. He had tried to fly round the world but failed. That was in 1931.The years passed. He gave up flying and began sailing. He enjoyed it greatly. Chichester was already 58 years old when he won the first solo transatlantic sailing race. His old dream of going round the world came back, but this time he would sail. His friends and doctors did not think he could do it, as he had lung cancer. But Chichester was determined to carry out his plan. In August 1966, at the age of nearly 65, an age when many men retire, he began the greatest voyage of his life.Chichester covered 14100 miles before stopping in Sydney, Australia. This was more than twice the distance anyone had previously sailed alone. He arrived in Australia on 12 December, just 107 days out from England. He received a warm welcome from the Australians and from his family who had flown there to meet him. On shore, Chichester could not walk without help. Everybody said the same thing: he had done enough; he must not go any further. But he did not listen. After resting in Sydney for a few weeks, Chichester set off once more in spite of his friends' attempts to dissuade him. The second half of his voyage was by far the more dangerous part, during which he sailed round the treacherous Cape Horn. After succeeding in sailing round Cape Horn, Chichester sent the following radio message to London: "I feel as if I had wakened from a nightmare. Wild horses could not drag me down to Cape Horn and that sinister Southern Ocean again."Just before 9 o'clock on Sunday evening 28 May 1967, he arrived back in England, where a quarter of a million people were waiting to welcome him. Queen Elizabeth II knighted(授以爵位)him with the very sword that Queen Elizabeth I had used almost 400 years earlier to knight Sir Francis Drake after he had sailed round the world for the first time. The whole voyage from England and back had covered 28,500 miles. It had taken him nine months, of which the sailing time was 226 days. He had done what he wanted to accomplish.21.What can we learn about Chichester?A. He failed the solo transatlantic sailing race in 1959.B. He was a brave and determined man.C. The second half of his voyage was not as dangerous as the first half.D. The radio message expressed his concern about the sailing.22.What did Queen Elizabeth II do after Chichester arrived back in England?A. She called on the English to learn from him.B. She was waiting to congratulate on his success in sailing.C. She thought poorly of his achievements.D. She knighted him for praising him.23.We can infer from the text that ____A. Anyone who had sailed alone traveled less than 7050miles before 1966B. Chichester sailed round the Atlantic in 1931C. Most of the English retire at the age of 65D. Chichester died of lung cancer in 1967 after he went back to EnglandBBanquets are usually held in restaurants in private rooms that have been reserved for the purpose. You will be met at the door and led to the banquet room. Traditionally, the head of your delegation should enter the room first. Do not be surprised if your hosts greet you with a loud round of applause. The proper response is to applaud back.Seating arrangements are stricter than in the West. Guests should never assume that they may sit where they please and should wait for hosts to guide them to their places. Traditionally, the Chinese regard the right side as the superior and the left side as the inferior. Therefore on formal occasions, the host invariably arranges for the main guests to sit on his right side.It is the host's responsibility to serve the guests, and at very formal banquets people do not begin to eat until the host has served a portion to the principal guest. Or, the host may simply raise hischopsticks and announce that eating has begun. After this point, one may serve oneself any food in any amount. Remember to go slow on eating. Don't fill yourself up when five courses are left to go. To stop eating in the middle of a banquet is rude, and your host may incorrectly think that something has been done to offend you.Drinking takes an important place in Chinese banquets. It is likely that the host will stand and hold his glass out with both hands while saying a few words. When he says the words "gan bei", which means bottoms up, all present should drain their glasses. After this initial toast, drinking and toasting are open to all. No words are needed to make a toast, and it is not necessary to drain your glass, although to do so is more respectful. When filling another glass, it is polite to fill it as full as you can. This symbolizes full respect and friendship. When the last dish is finished, the banquet has officially ended. There is little ceremony involved with its conclusion. The host may ask if you have eaten your fill. Then the principal host will rise, signaling that the banquet has ended. Generally, the principal host will bid good evening to everyone at the door and stay behind to settle the bill with the restaurateur. Other hosts usually accompany guests to their vehicles and remain outside waving until the cars have left the premises.24.To attend a formal banquet, you_______.A. may enter the banquet room directly when you arrive .B. may stop eating in the middle of the banquet.C. may help yourself to any food immediately the dishes are served.D. should applaud back when greeted with a loud round of applause .25.What is the host ‘s responsibility in the author’s eyes?A. Announcing that eating ends.B. Driving guests to their home.C. Filling the guests’ glasses.D. Arranging for guests to go to their place..26.We can conclude form the passage that____A. To stop eating halfway means that the dishes taste bad.B. Guests should drain their g1asses the instant they are filledC. Important guests are arranged to sit on the host’s right sideD. The more you drink , the more you respect the host.27.The passage mainly tells us ____A. Chinese food is delicious.B. customs and traditions at banquets in ChinaC. what food guests should eat at banquetsD. different customs between China and western countries.CA machine that takes sweat-laden clothes and turns the moisture into drinking water is in use in Sweden. The device spins and heats the material to remove the sweat, and then passes the vapor through a special membrane designed to only let water molecules get through.Since its Monday launch, its creators say more than 1,000 people have "drunk other's sweat" in Gothenburg. They add the liquid is cleaner than local tap water. The device was built for the United Nation's child-focused charity UNICEF to promote a campaign highlighting the fact that 780 million people in the world lack access to clean water. The machine was designed and built by engineer Andreas Hammar, known locally for his appearances on TV tech show Mekatronik. He said the critical part of the sweat machine was a new water purification component developed by a company named HVR in collaboration with Sweden's Royal Institute of Technology."It uses a technique called membrane distillation(膜蒸馏)," he told the BBC." We use a substance that's a bit like Gortex that only lets steam through but keeps bacteria, salts, clothing fibers and other substances out." They have something similar on the International Space Station to treat astronaut's urine - but our machine was cheaper to build. Volunteers have been sampling the treated sweat since the start of the week in Gothenburg" The amount of water it produces depends on how sweaty the person is - but one person's T-shirt typically produces 10ml , roughly a mouthful."The equipment has been put on show at the Gothia Cup - the world's largest international youth football tournament. MattiasRonge, chief executive of Stockholm-based advertising agency Deportivo - which organized the stunt(惊人的表演) - said the machine had helped raise awareness for UNICEF, but in reality had its limitations."People haven't produced as much sweat as we hoped - right now the weather in Gothenburg islousy," he said." So we've installed exercise bikes alongside the machine and volunteers are cycling like crazy." Even so, the demand for sweat is greater than the supply. And the machine will never be mass produced - there are better solutions out there such as water purifying pills."28.Which of the following is the disadvantage of the machine?_______.A. The water processed by the machine is cleaner than local tap water .B. The amount of water the machine produces is too small.C. the machine is cheaper than the similar one on the International Space StationD. The machine can help raise awareness of lacking water in the world .29.What is the main idea of the fifth paragraph ?A. How the machine works.B. Who developed the machine.C. How the machine was invented.D. Why the machine was invented..30.What does Mttias Ronge think of the machine?____A. The machine can solve the severe water shortage in the world..B. People do not like the water the machine processesC. The machine should be used in rather hot areas in summer.D. The machine is not worth popularizing..31.The passage is most likely to be____A. a tourist brochureB. a book review C .a news report D. a blog.DMany people rely on a cup of coffee or two to wake them up in the morning or pick them up during the working day, but now a chemist has come up with a speedy alternative to crafting a cup of coffee.U.S. biochemist Ben Y u has created `Sprayable Energy,` which claims to be the world`s first caffeine - based topical energy spray. He said tired workers can spray a `shot` of caffeine onto their skin without experiencing a strong buzz, loading up on unnecessary calories or being stuck with a nasty aftertaste like they might get from drinking energy drinks or coffee. The patent-pending caffeine spray is an odourless liquid that is absorbed through the skin and distributed through the body over a number of hours to deliver a caffeine hit that apparently lasts longer than guzzling a cup of coffee. Each small aluminum bottle of Sprayable Energy contains around 160 sprays - the equivalentamount of caffeine to 40 cups of coffee and the creators say it is a much cheaper way of getting a caffeine fix than popping to a cafe. The only active ingredient in the spray is caffeine, which can naturally enter the human body through the skin by passing through cell membranes as it is very similar to nicotine in structure. Each spritz of Sprayable Energy contains around a quarter of the amount of caffeine found in a cup of coffee, but apparently has the same effect as a full cup.The website said: `The reason for this is our product not being ingested, isn`t almost entirely metabolised(新陈代谢)by the liver before entering your system and becoming available to your body.``Thus, a smaller amount of caffeine can have just the same effect as a very large amount of caffeine ingested through an energy drink or cup of coffee.`c`s website recommends that users apply the spray in places where they normally spritz perfume, such as the neck or wrists, but warns users not to exceed 20 sprays a day.It claims that after spraying the product on the skin, users will feel `awake and focused without being over-stimulated,` which is common with coffee and energy drinks.32.What can we learn about Sprayable Energy from the passage ?_______.A.A bottle of Sprayable Energyis cheaper than 40 cups of coffee. .B. Sprayable Energy lets users not worry about taking in unecessary calories..C. Sprayable Energy can be used at least 20 sprays a dayD. The caffeine spray is a colorless liquid that is absorbed through the skin..33.What does the fifth paragraph mainly tell us ?____A ,Sprayable Energy is taken by mouth...B. Before Sprayable Energy is absorbed by body, the liver entirely metabolizes itC. How Sprayable Energy acts on user’s body and how users use the product.D. Sprayable Energy is convenient but expensive.34.We can conclude from the passage that ____A. Sprayable Energy can not be permitted to be used by people now.B. Sprayable Energy has not already gone into mass productionC. each spritz of Sprayable Energy has the same effect as a full cup of coffeeD. Sprayable Energy is well received by flagging workers.35.The writer’s attitude towards Sprayable Energy ____A. negative.B. positiveC. uncertainD. indifferent第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

2015年省市高中毕业年级第二次质量预测英语试题阅读理解〔共两节,总分值40分〕AIn April 2014,the world's oldest known message in a bottle was discovered floating in theBaltic Sea. It had spent 101 years lost in the ocean! The message was finally sent to the author'sgranddaughter.A German fisherman named Konrad Fischer found the brown bottle near Kiel,Germany. Hesaid he nearly threw the bottle back into the water after pulling it out of a fishing net. Then henoticed something inside. The bottle in good condition contained a Danish postcard with two German stamps, datedMay 17,1913. Although dampness had made most of the writing illegible〔字迹模糊的〕,thereadable part of the message asked whoever found it to return it to an address in Berlin. It evencontained two stamps to pay for postage. From the address, researchers found that the postcard was written by a man named RichardPlatz, who was 20 years old when he wrote the message. This expression means that beauty is only a temporary surfacequality. Some beauty products can cause lasting damage that goes far below the surface of the skin.In America, many people use sunlight and non-natural light to darken their skin. Healthexperts advise against what is called“tanning〞because of its links to skin cancer. In the Africancountry of Senegal〔塞加尔〕,some women take health risks trying to do just the opposite. An average beauty supply shop in Dakar has many kinds of skin-lightening creams andsoaps. The World Health Organization says that 25%of Senegalese women use skin-lighteningproduction on a usual basis. These products can contain chemicals, like mercury〔汞〕,hydroquinone〔对苯二酚〕,etc. These are dangerous ingredients that can cause cancer andpossibly other physical damage to the skin. They can actually burn the eyes and skin.Shop worker Adama Diagne advises her visitors to avoid the stronger products that promisefast results. She users a cream that is made from carrots, not the strong chemical, hydroquinone. She says that it is a personal choice and that no one pressures her. They say they want to look beautiful,to find a husband,to stand out in a crowd or simply to look great for a special event. This thinking troubles Senegalese film-maker Khardiata Pouye Sall. So,she made“ThisColor That Bothers Me",a film about the subject of skin lightening. She said,“I used the mostshocking images so that women would see the dangers. It is hard to understand why a woman saysthat dark skin is not beautiful. It is in their heads. Unfortunately, the theatre is on the other side of the town, and the bus service between my office and Richland Hills is not very good. But if you are lucky, you can make the round trip in 45 minutes. Last Monday, I stood at the bus stop for 15 minutes waiting for the bus. By the time I saw one come around the corner, there was not enough time left to make the trip. So I gave up and went back to the office. The same thing happened on Tuesday, and again next day. On Thursday, my luck changed. I got on a bus right away and arrived at the theatre in exactly 20 minutes. When I got there, however, I found a long line of people at the box office, I heard one man say he had been waiting in line for over an hour. Realizing I would not have enough time to wait in line, I caught the next bus and headed back across the town. By Friday I realized my only hope was to make the trip by taxi, it was expensive, but I felt it would be worth it to hear the concert. The trip by taxi only took 10 minutes, but felt like an hour to me. When I got to the theatre, I was relieved to see that nobody was waiting in line. The reason, however,I quickly discovered, was that they had already sold all the tickets.21.The man learned ________ that there would be a concert last Friday.A.from his friends B.from one of his work-matesC.over the radio D.from the newspaper22.He tried to go to the theatre every day but managed to get there only ________.A.once B.twice C.three times D.four times 23.One day the man took ________ to get to the theatre by bus.A.forty-five minutes B.fifteen minutesC.just twenty minutes D.over an hour24.The underlined word “relieved” may best be replaced by ________.A.surprised B.pleased C.puzzled D.sorryBThe Most Wonderful IslandsThe Palm Islands are the largest artificial islands in the world and are under construction in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. They are being developed as tourist, leisure, and residential resorts, and will increase the coastline of the country by 120 kilometres. After four years of planning and careful consideration of the environmental issues, construction started in 2001. Dutch engineers with experience of reclaiming land from the sea were employed in the building of the first two islands. The site for all three islands is an area of the sea where the water is not very deep. Sand is taken from the seabed and sprayed into the construction site. Although the shallow water facilitates this process, the islands are still very exposed to the currents and tidal movements of the sea. Rocks are used to hold the sand in place resulting in a large crescent(月状的)structure. This acts as a breakwater and protects the islands from the sea.The first two islands are in the shape of date palm trees and consist of a trunk and 17 frond, or leaves coming off the trunk. The first island, named Palm Jumeirah, has three five-star hotels in the trunk, and luxury homes in the leaves. It is astonishing that when these homes went on sale in 2004, they were all sold within three days. The second palm, Jebel Ali, was started in 2002 and is designed to be an entertainment centre. Six marinas(小游艇船坞) are planned, with a water theme park, and homes built on stilts(桩柱) in the water. The Palm Deira planned to be the largest of the three islands, with a length of 14 km and a width of 8.5 km, an area larger than the city of Paris. It will consist of residential properties, marinas, shopping malls, sports facilities, and clubs. These will be open to both residents and tourists.More artificial islands, the World Islands, are now being constructed near the Palm Jumeirah. They consist of 300 private islands grouped into the shape of the continents of the world and will be used for estates, private homes, community islands, and resorts.Unquestionably, these artificial islands are one of the wonders of the modern world. They will also maintain Dubai's status as one of the leading tourist destinations in the region. 25.According to the passage, all the following are right EXCEPT ________.A.Some Dutch engineers are experienced in reclaiming land from the seaB.The islands are being built in the shallow water of the seaC.All the luxury homes on Palm Jumeirah were soldD.The World Islands are bigger than the Palm Jumeirah26.The underlined word “facilitates” in the second paragraph probably means ________.A.holds back B.makes easierC.slows down D.leads to27.What is the passage written for?A.To introduce the wonderful artificial islands.B.To show how to build artificial islands.C.To offer a travel service for tourists.D.To prove the Palm Islands are the largest artificial islands in the world.C“Plants were expected to get larger with increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, but changes in temperature, humidity and nutrient availability seem to have trumped the benefits of increased carbon dioxide,” said researchers from the National University of Singapore.45 percent of the species studied now reach smaller adult sizes than they did in the past. The researchers pointed out that warmer temperatures and changing habitats, caused by climate change, are possible reasons for shrinking creatures.“We do not yet know the mechanisms involved, or why some organism are getting smaller while others are unaffected,” the researchers said. “Until we unders tand more, we could be risking negative consequences that we can't yet quantify.”The change was big in cold-blooded animals. Only two decades of warmer temperatures were enough to make reptiles (爬行动物) smaller. An increase of 1 degree centigrade caused nearly a 10 percent increase in metabolism (新陈代谢). Greater use of energy resulted in tiny tortoises and little lizards. Fish are smaller now too. Though overfishing has played a part in reducing numbers, experiments show that warmer temperatures also stop fish growth. There is a recent report on warmer temperatures' negative effects on plankton (浮游生物), the base of the marine ecosystem.Warm-blooded animals weren't immune from the size change caused by climate change. Many birds are now smaller. Mammals have been miniaturized too. Soay sheep are thinner. Red deer are weaker. And polar bears are smaller, compared with historical records. This is not the first time this has happened in Earth's history.55 million years ago, a warming event similar to the current climate change caused bees, spiders and ants to shrink by 50 to 75 percent over several thousand years. That event happened over a long time than the current climate change. The speed of modern climate change could mean organisms may not respond or adapt quickly enough, especially those with long generation times. So, it is likely that more negative influences of climate change will be shown in future.28.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A. Why do some species become smaller?B. How does temperature change in Earth's history?C. Climate change has many negative effectsD. Species become smaller as climate warms29.The underlined word “trumped” in the first paragraph can be replaced by ________.A. beatenB. increasedC. strengthenedD. equaled30.Researchers from the National University of Singapore believe that ________.A. too many studies on animals' size have been doneB. all the animals on the earth have become smallerC. how climate change affects animals' size has not been found clearlyD. climate change has more negative effects on warm-blooded animals31.What can we learn from the passage?A. Bird have suffered more from climate change than fish.B. Climate change have even affected plankton negatively.C. Cold-blooded animals become smaller because of the lack of food.D. The warming event has never happened in Earth' s history before.DFor most seventh graders, life doesn't get much harder than a history test. But for Grant Reed of Bellville, Ohio, it's his own curr ent events that are so painful. “Honestly, I don't want to die,” Grant says. Last year, doctors at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus found a tumor(肿瘤) in Grant's brain. They cut it out, but the surgery left him with stroke-like symptoms. Plus, he had to go through months of radiation and chemotherapy to try to stop the spread of the disease.Yet, through it all, Grant has shown remarkable determination, which he owes, partly, to Ohio State football. His parents, Troy and Denise, were both in the OSU marching band and fell in love during halftime of the Michigan game. His cat is named after the team Buckeye. His wardrobe is painted scarlet (the color of the team's sportswear). The point is, almost nothing mattered more to Grant than Ohio State football—until he got sick, of course.“I didn't like the word can cer,” Grant says. So he decided not to use the word. Instead, the kid named his cancer Michigan and insisted everyone in his life refer to it as such, because Ohio State always beats Michigan. That was something he could understand and make it into a competition. He was going to beat this disease. It's now been more than a year since Grant issued that announcement. “And if you look at his scans,” Dr. Randal Olshefski at Nationwide Children's says,“There's nothing there. There's a big space, but there's no tumor.”“Grant is beating Michigan. And although much of it has to go to science, don't discount the semantics(语义学). You have to do something to make it a disease you can fight. And for Grant, that was naming it Michigan,”his parents say. This weekend, Ohio State and Michigan will be battling like their lives depend on it. But in this house, the Reed family will be watching with a calm insight: it's just a game.32. What's the main idea of the first paragraph?A.History is a difficult subject. B.Grant suffered a serious disease.C.The operation was successful. D.The tumor has spread all over.33. From the second paragraph, we can infer that________.A.Grant was born a football fan B.football makes a full manC.interest is the best teacher D.God helps those who help themselves34. Apart from radiation and chemotherapy,________ is helping Grant beat the disease.A.the semantics B.his strong determinationC.the football game D.his cat Buckeye35. By saying that it's just a game, we can infer that the Reed family________.A.has lost interest in the match between Ohio State and MichiganB.believes Michigan will surely beat Ohio State this weekendC.has a better understanding of lifeD.views the match as a matter of life and death第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

河南省顶级名校2015届高三年级入学定位考试英语试卷第一部分阅读理解(20*2=40)ASince the 1970s, scientists have been searching for ways to link the brain with computers. Brain-computer interface(BCI) technology could help people with disabilities send commands to machines.Recently, two researchers, Jose Milan and Michele Tavella from the Federal Polytechnic school in Lausanne, Switzerland, demonstrated a small robotic wheelchair directed by a person’s thoughts. In the laboratory, Tavella operated the wheelchair just by thinking about moving his left or right band. He could even talk as he watched the vehicle and guided it with his thoughts.“Our brain has billions of nerve cells. These send signals through the spinal cord (脊髓)to the muscles to give us the ability to move. But spinal cord injuries or other conditions can prevent these weak electrical signals from reaching the muscles,” Tavella says. “Our system allows disabled people to communicate with external world and also to control devices.”The researchers designed a special cap for the user. This head cover picks up the signals from the scalp(头皮) and sends them to a computer. The computer interprets the signals and commands the motorized wheelchair. The wheelchair also has two cameras that identify objects in its path. They help the computer react to commands from the brain.Prof. Milan, the team leader, says scientists keep improving the computer software that interprets brain signals and tur ns them into simple commands. “The practical possibilities that BCI technology offers to disabled people can be grouped in two categories: communication, and controlling devices. One example is this wheelchair.”He says his team has set two goals. One is testing with real patients, so as to prove that this is a technology they can benefit from. And the other is to guarantee that they can use the technology over long periods of time.1. Twenty-one years later I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different tale to tell.My grandma, an amazing woman, graduated from college at the age of 65. She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year after I started college, she developed cancer.I made the choice to withdraw from college to care for her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait. Then I got married with another dream: building my family with a combination of adopted and biological children. Actually, the past decade has seen more and more forests disappearing and the globe becoming increasingly warm. People now realize that this unhealthy situation must be changed, and that we must be able to develop in sustainable ways. That means growth with low carbon or development of sustainable products. In other words, we should keep the healthy while using its supply of natural resources.Today, sustainable development is a popular trend in many countries. According to a recent study, the global market for low-carbon energy will become three times bigger over the next decade. China, for example, has set its mind on leading that market, hoping to seize chances in the new round of the global energy resolution. It is now trying hard to made full use of wind and solar energy, and is spending a huge amount of money making electric cars and high-speed trains. In addition, we are also seeing great growth in the global markets for sustainable products such as palm oil(棕榈油), which is produced without cutting down valuable rainforest. In recent years the markets for sustainable products have grown more than 50%.Governments can fully develop the potential of these new markets. First, they can set high targets for reducing carbon emissions(排放) and targets for saving and reusing energy. Besides, stronger arrangement of public resources like forests can also help to speed up the development. Finally, governments can avoid the huge public expenses that are taking us in the wrong direction, and redirecting some of those expenses can accelerate the change from the traditional model to a sustainable one.The major challenge of this century is to find ways to meet the needs of a growing population within the limits of this single planet. That is no small task, but it offers abundant new chances for sustainable product industries.16. The traditional business model is harmful because of all the following EXCEPT that____.A. it makes the world warmerB. it consumes natural resourcesC. it brings severe damage to futureD. it makes growth hard to continue17. What can we infer from Paragraph2?A. China lacks wind and solar energy.B. China is the leader of the low-carbon market.C. High-speed trains are a low-carbon development.D. Palm oil is made at the cost of valuable forests.18. To fully develop the low-carbon markets governments can______.A. cut public expensesB. forbid carbon emissionsC. develop public resourcesD. encourage energy conservation19. We can learn from the last paragraph that businesses have many chances to _______.A. develop sustainable productsB. explore new natural resourcesC. make full use of natural resourcesD. deal with the major challenge20. What is the main purpose of the passage?A. To introduce a new business modelB. To compare two business modelsC.To predict a change of the global marketsD. But, 41 , words of wisdom are soon forgotten. Once companies have attracted customers they often 42 the second half of the story. In the excitement of beating off the competition, negotiating prices, securing orders, and delivering the product, managers tend to become carried away. They forget what they regard as the boring side of business—43 that the customer remains a customer.44 to concentrate on retaining as well as attracting customers costs business huge amounts of money annually. It has been estimated that the average company loses between 10 and 30 per cent of its customers every years. In constantly changing 45 , this is not surprising. What is surprising is the fact that few companies have any idea how many customers they have lost.Only now are organizations beginning to wake up to those lost opportunities and calculate the 46 implications. Cutting down the number of customers a company loses can make a big 47 in its performance. Research in the US found that a five per cent decrease in the number of defecting (流失的) customers led to 48 increases of between 25 and 85 per cent.I n the US, Domino’s Pizza estimates that a regular customer is worth more than $5,000 over ten years. A customer who receives a poor quality product or service on their first visit and 49 never returns, is losing the company thousands of dollars in 50 profits (more if you consider how many people they are likely to tell about their bad experience). The logic behind cultivating customer 51 is impossible to deny. “In practice most companies’ marketing effort is focused on getting customers, with li ttle attention paid to 52 them”, says Adrian Payne of Cornfield University’ School of Management. “Research suggests that there is a close relationship between retaining customers and making profits.53 customers tend to buy more, are predictable and usually cost less to service than new customers. Tell the bus driver.” The message was passing on from person to person. But somewhere along the way, it was changed. The bus driver told that there was a bomb in the toilet. He immediate stopped the bus and telephoned the police. When the police came, they told the passengers to get off the bus or stay far away. Then they closed the highway. As a result, a traffic jam of 15 mile long was soon caused. In the help of a dog, the police searched for two hours.
It had taken him nine months, of which the sailingtime was 226 days. Don't fill yourself up when five courses are left togo. Then the principal hostwill rise, signaling that the banquet has ended. Generally, the principal host will bid good eveningto everyone at the door and stay behind to settle the bill with the restaurateur. He said the critical part of the sweat machine was anew water purification component developed by a company named HVR in collaboration with Sweden's Royal Institute of Technology."It uses a technique called membrane distillation(膜蒸馏)," he told the BBC." We use a substance that's a bit like Gortex that only lets steam through but keeps bacteria, salts, clothing fibers and other substances out." They have something similar on the International Space Stationto treat astronaut's urine - but our machine was cheaper to build. Volunteers have been samplingthe treated sweat since the start of the week in Gothenburg" The amount of water it produces depends on how sweaty the person is - but one person's T-shirt typically produces 10ml , roughly a mouthful."The equipment has been put on show at the Gothia Cup - the world's largest international youth football tournament. The machine is not worth popularizing..31.The passage is most likely to be____A. a tourist brochureB. a book review C .a news report D. a blog.DMany people rely on a cup of coffee or two to wake them up in the morning or pick them up during the working day, but now a chemist has come up with a speedy alternative to crafting a cupof coffee.U.S. biochemist Ben Y u has created `Sprayable Energy,` which claims to be the world`s first caffeine - based topical energy spray.
