It's a big building with lots of classrooms, a huge playground, and even an indoor swimming pool! The only bummer is when it's suddenly your turn to be the ball monitor for the week!The absolute best part of Oakwood though has to be all my friends and teachers. My bestie Marcus and I have literally known each other since we were babies, and we're total partners in crime. He always manages to crack me up with his goofy jokes and impersonations of our teachers. I'm also super tight with Nina, Jamal, and Sydney – the four of us form like a awesome squad.All the teachers are so supportive and caring too. My favorite is definitely my third grade teacher Mrs. Appleton who just made every school day feel fun and happy. She would bring in her cutelittle dog Sprinkles for pet days and do mini dance parties to help us re-energize after lessons. Even subjects I'm not so hot at like spelling and grammar were more bearable with her positive attitude.Overall though, Oakwood Elementary really is my second home at this point. Maybe I'm a little biased since it's the only school I've ever attended, but I honestly wouldn't want to go anywhere else! The fun facilities, quality teachers, andamazing friendsmake it such an ideal learning environment. This is the place where I'm being shaped into (hopefully) a successful grown-up through engaging lessons and positive relationships.I have so many amazing memories already after just a few years here – from wacky science fair projects to the unforgettable 2nd grade Thanksgiving play where I was a turkey. My friends and I love trying to go really high on the swings and seeing who can jump the farthest off. When it's hot outside, there are big shady trees we can sit under and cool off.Along with our regular playground time, we also have P.E. class in the big gymnasium twice a week. In P.E., we get to learn fun sports and games that help keep us active and healthy. Sometimes we play basketball, kickball, or soccer. Other times we do exercises and activities to improve our running, jumping, and coordination skills. I always feel tired after P.E., but in a good way that lets me know I worked really hard! The gym also has a big stage where we have all-school assemblies and put on performances for our families.Outside of our core subjects like math, reading, and science, we also get to take some really cool elective classes at Sunny Hills. One trimester, I took an art class where we learned about famous artists and styles of art. We got to paint, sculpt with clay, and even do printmaking. Another trimester, I took a drama class and we played fun acting games and put on a play for ourparents. This year, I'm taking a computer coding class where we're learning how to write simple programs and make computer games and animations! You can get a hot lunch with sides like mashed potatoes or carrots, or just grab a PB&J sandwich with yogurt, fruit, and milk. The pizza is my favorite though, especially on Fridays when they have it with a fresh garden salad. And don't forget about the ice cream sandwiches for dessert!I'm so grateful to go to a school like Sunnydale where I can learn, play, explore my interests, and be myself. The teachers really care about us and make sure we're not just memorizing facts but growing to be good people too. We have anti-bullying lessons, talk about being upstanders not bystanders, and discuss important values like kindness, honesty, and respect.
