Then in 1957, when she was 23 years old, she got a chance to visit a friend in Kenya whose family owned a farm there. This was her big break!When Jane got to Kenya, she met a famous paleontologist named Dr. Louis Leakey. A paleontologist is someone who digs up old bones and fossils to learn about prehistoric life. Dr. Leakey was looking for someone to live with and study wild chimpanzees in their natural habitat in the Gombe Stream National Park. At first he didn't think a woman with no college degree could handle such a tough job. But Jane convinced him that she was determined, patient, and loved animals more than anything.
