可英文的感觉就没那么礼貌了,颇有点儿“哎,给老子来杯拿铁”的味道。

有几句经典句型,使用频率颇高,不妨拿去背背:A.We appreciate the service you provided to us, and we feel fortunate to have you as our clients and friend.(我们非常感激你为我们提供的服务,有您这样的客户和朋友是我们的运气。
)注:appreciate后面直接接名词或名词性短语,若要接if引导的从句,记住要在if前加it, 即“appreciate it if…”这是英文为母语的人都会常常犯的错误。

看邮件的人,不得不先做语法句型划分练习,随后才能将意思猜出一二。
例如,我曾碰到过这样一封邮件,它写道:“With the accommodation, we offered a five star hotel for our guests, we also put a lot of effort and cooked many kinds of food every day, all the guests felt free to choose from them, the food and drinks were cooked in the principle of being healthy, clean, safe in order to give our guests enough energy to hold meeting……”这封毫无语法和句型可言的邮件,若被起草者的初中英语老师看到,估计会羞愧地撞墙吧。
所以“地道”邮件要避免写你拿不准的长句,而代之以简短句。
先保证句子的正确性,再来斟酌句型的优美。
另外,避免使用“in the principle of ”(本着什么原则)、“give enough energy to hold meeting”(给予足够的能量去开会)这样中式的思维。
上面那段话,若要保持原意,使用简短句,可稍作修改为“A five-star hotel was arranged for the meeting participants. We endeavored to provide a variety of food to them as well. All prepared food and beverages were healthy, clean and safe in order to satisfy all participants' requirements…”(为与会者安排了五星级酒店的住宿。
并且我们竭尽所能为与会者提供各种美食。
所有准备的食物和饮料都是健康、干净、安全的,满足所有与会者的要求……)4莫要造词换用描述表达造词的一个“罪魁祸首”就是电子词典。
很多中文听起来很溜的词,其实英文里是不用的。
例如,若你查“权力寻租”,电子词典会显示“power rent-seeking”。
这个词频繁地出现在国人写的论文、邮件、文章中,我曾经也对这个词的正确性深信不疑。
直到有一天,我一个美国朋友问我这是啥意思,我才知道人家是根本不用的。
还有一个词“undertaking”(经营者),相信学法律的人对这个词很熟悉,甚至我们的法条翻译中也频频使用它。
但我问了很多美国法学教授和学生,他们都不认为这是一个正确的用法。
如何避免造词?我的写作老师告诉我,若你对一个词(特别是翻译过来的词)的正确性拿不准的时候,不妨用描述性的话去解释它,就像字典里解释一个词一样。
例如,“权力寻租”就可以写成“one (e.g. Government’s employee) uses her public power to gain her private interest”。
虽说啰嗦些,但至少可以避免歧义。
