After Twenty YearsO.HenryThe policeman moved up the avenue impressively. The impressiveness was habitual and not for show, for spectators① were few.The time was barely 10 o'clock at night, but chilly gusts of wind with a taste of rain in them had well nigh depeopled② the streets.Trying doors as he went, twirling his club with many intricate and artful movements, turning now and then to cast his watchful eye adown the pacific thoroughfare③,the officer, with his stalwart form and slight swagger, made a fine picture ofa guardian of the peace. The vicinity was one that kept early hours. Now and then you might see the lights of a cigar store or of an allnight lunch counter;but the majority of the doors belonged to business places that had long since been closed. When about midway of a certain block the policeman suddenly slowed his walk.In the doorway of a darkened hardware store a man leaned, with an unlighted cigar in his mouth. As the policeman walked up to him the man spoke up quickly.“It's all right, officer,” he said,reassuringly④.“I'm just waiting for a friend. It's an appointment made twenty years ago.Sounds a little funny to you, doesn't it? Well,I'll explain if you'd like to make certain it's all straight.About that long ago there used to be a restaurant where this store stands—‘Big Joe’ Brady's restaurant.”“Until five years ago,” said the policeman.“It was torn down then.”The man in the doorway struck a match and lit his cigar. The light showed a pale, squarejawed face with keen eyes, and a little white scar near his right eyebrow. His scarf pin was a large diamond, oddly set.“Twenty years ago tonight,” said the man,“I dined here at ‘Big Joe’ Brady's with Jimmy Wells,my best chum, and the finest chap in the world. He and I were raised here in New York, just like two brothers, together.I was eighteen and Jimmy was twenty. The next morning I was to start for the West to make my fortune. You couldn'thave dragged Jimmy out of New York;he thought it was the only place on earth.Well,we agreed that night that we would meet here again exactly twenty years from that date and time,no matter what our conditions might be or from what distance we might have to come.We figured that in twenty years each of us ought to have our destiny worked out and our fortunes made, whatever they were going to be.”“It sounds pretty interesting,” said the policeman.“Rather a long time between meets, though,it seems to me.Haven't you heard from your friend since you left?”“Well, yes, for a time we corresponded⑤,” said the other.“But after a year or two we lost track of each other. You see,the West is a pretty big proposition, and I kept hustling around over it pretty lively. But I know Jimmy will meet me here if he's alive, for he always was the truest old chap in the world. He'll never forget.I came a thousand miles to stand in this door tonight, and it's worth it if my old partner turns up.”The waiting man pulled out a handsome watch, the lids of it set with small diamonds.“Three minutes to ten,” he announced.“It was exactly ten o'clock when we parted here at the restaurant door.”“Did pretty well out West, didn't you?” asked the policeman.“You bet!I hope Jimmy has done half as well.He was a kind of plodder, though, good fellow as he was.I've had to compete with some of the sharpest wits going to get my pile.A man gets in a groove in New York.It takes the West to put a razoredge on him.”The policeman twirled his club and took a step or two.“I'll be on my way.Hope your friend comes around all right.Going to call time on him sharp?”“I should say not!” said the other.“I'll give him half an hour at least. If Jimmy is alive on earth he'll be here by that time.So long, officer.”“Good night, sir,” said the policeman, passing on along his beat, trying doors as he went. There was now a fine, cold drizzle falling, and the wind had risen from its uncertain puffs into a steady blow. The few foot passengers astir in that quarter hurried dismally ⑥ and silently along with coat collars turned high and pocketed hands. And in the door of the hardware store the man who had come a thousand miles to fill an appointment, uncertain almost to absurdity, with the friend of his youth, smoked his cigar and waited.About twenty minutes he waited, and then a tall man in a long overcoat, with collar turned up to his ears, hurried across from the opposite side of the street. He went directly to the waiting man.“Is that you,Bob?” he asked, doubtfully.“Is that you,Jimmy Wells?”cried the man in the door.“Bless my heart!” exclaimed the new arrival, grasping both the other's hands with his own.“It's Bob,sure as fate.I was certain I'd find you here if you were still in existence.Well, well, well!—twenty years is a long time. The old gone,Bob;I wish it had lasted,so we could have had another dinner there. How has the West treated you,old man?”

Wuthering heights(Excerpt)One time, however,we were near quarrelling. He said the pleasantest manner of spending a hot July day was lying from morning till evening on a bank of heath in the middle of the moors, with the bees humming dreamily about among the bloom, and the larks singing high up overhead, and the blue sky and bright sun shining steadily and cloudlessly. That was his most perfect idea of heaven's happiness;mine was rocking in a rustling green tree, with a west wind blowing, and bright white clouds flitting rapidly above;and not only larks, but throstles, and blackbirds, and linnets, and cuckoos pouring out music on every side, and the moors seen at a distance, broken into cool dusky dells;but close by great swells of long grass undulating in waves to the breeze;and woods and sounding water, and the whole world awake and wild with joy.He wanted all to lie in an ecstasy of peace;I wanted all to sparkle and dance in a glorious jubilee.I said his heaven would be only half alive;and he said mine would be drunk;I said I should fall asleep in his;and he said he could not breathe in mine, and began to grow very snappish. At last,we agreed to try both,as soon as the right weather came;and then we kissed each other and were friends.

Moby Dick (excerpt)PitchpolingTo make them run easily and swiftly, the axles of carriages are anointed;and for much the same purpose, some whalers perform a similar operation upon their boat;they grease the bottom.Nor is it to be doubted that as such a procedure can do no harm,it may possibly be of no contemptible advantage;considering that oil and water are hostile;that oil is a sliding thing, and that the object in view is to make the boat slide bravely.Queequeg believed strongly in anointing his boat, and one morning not long after the German ship Jungfrau disappeared, took more than customary pains in that occupation;crawling under its bottom, where it hung over the side, and rubbing as though diligently seeking to insure a crop of hair from the craft's bald keel.He seemed to be working in obedience to some particular presentiment.Nor did it remain unwarranted by the event.Towards noon whales were raised;but so soon as the ship sailed down to them, they turned and fled swiftly.Nevertheless, the boats pursued, and Stubb's was foremost.By great effort,Tashtego at last succeeded in planting one iron;but the stricken whale, without at all sounding, still continued his horizontal flight, with added speed.Such unintermitted strainings upon the planted iron must sooner or later inevitably extract it.It became imperative to lance the flying whale,or be content to lose him.But to haul the boat up to his flank was impossible,he swam so fast and furious. What then remained?Of all the wondrous devices and dexterities, the sleights of hand and countless subtleties,to which the veteran whaleman is so often forced, none exceed that fine manoeuvre with the lance called pitchpoling.Small sword,or broad sword,in all its exercises boasts nothing like it.It is only indispensable with an inveterate running whale;its grand fact and feature is the wonderful distance to which the long lance is accurately darted from a violently rocking, jerking boat, under extreme headway.Steel and wood included, the entire spear is some ten or twelve feet in length;the staff is much slighter than that of the harpoon, and also of a lighter material —pine. It is furnished with a small rope called a warp,of considerable length,by which it can be hauled back to the hand after darting. But before going further,it is important to mention here, that though the harpoon may be pitchpoled in the same way with the lance, yet it is seldom done;and when done,is still less frequently successful,on account of the greater weight and inferior length of the harpoon as compared with the lance, which in effect become serious drawbacks. As a general thing, therefore, you must first get fast to a whale, before any pitchpoling comes into play.Look now at Stubb;a man who from his humorous, deliberate coolness and equanimity in the direst emergencies, was specially qualified to excel in pitchpoling.Look at him;he stands upright in the tossed bow of the flying boat;wrapt in fleecy foam, the towing whale is forty feet ahead.Handling the long lance lightly, glancing twice or thrice along its length to see if it be exactly straight,Stubb whistlingly gathers up the coil of the warp in one hand,so as to secure its free end in his grasp, leaving the rest unobstructed. Then holding the lance full before his waistband's middle,he levels it at the whale;when, covering him with it,he steadily depresses the buttend in his hand, thereby elevating the point till the weapon stands fairly balanced upon his palm, fifteen feet in the air.He minds you somewhat of a juggler, balancing a long staff on his chin.Next moment with a rapid, nameless impulse,in a superb lofty arch the bright steel spans the foaming distance, and quivers in the life spot of the whale.Instead of sparkling water,he now spouts red blood. That drove the spigot out of him!cried Stubb.“It's July's immortal Fourth;all fountains must run wine today!Would now,it were old Orleans whiskey,or old Ohio! Then,Tashtego, lad,I'd have ye hold a can to the jet,and we'd drink round it!”Again and again to such gamesome talk, the dexterous dart is repeated, the spear returning to its master like a greyhound held in skilful leash. The agonized whale goes into his flurry;the towline is slackened, and the pitchpoler dropping astern, folds his hands, and mutely watches the monster die.《白鲸》(节选)投杆为了使车轴转得又滑又快,就得给车厢的车轴加油;有些捕鲸人为了一样的目的,也对他们的小艇使用类似的办法;他们给艇底擦油。

Unit 3 THE INTERNETSTRONGER TOGETHER: HOW WE HAVE BEEN CHANGED BY THE INTERNETMuch has been written about the wonders of the World Wide Web. There are countless articles telling us how the Internet has made our life more convenient. We no longer have to wait in line or carry cash around when we go shopping. We can get the most updated information from large databases. We can download software, documents, and images whenever we need them. But the Internet has done much more for people than simply make life more convenient. People’s lives have been changed by online communities and social networks.Jan Tchamani, an English teacher in Birmingham, UK, suddenlydeveloped a serious illness and had to quit her job. At age 50. she found herself out of work and stuck at home with only her computer to keep her company. After a while, she discovered that surfing the Internet could help her feel less lonely and bored. She could listen to music, watch films, play games, and explore the world. She also joined an online group where she could talk about her problems and get support and advice from others. She realised that one of the greatest benefits of the Internet was its ability to remove the distance that actually exists between people. She was so inspired by the people she met online that she decided to start an IT club to teacher older people how to use computers and the Internet. She and her friends now organise events and collect money for private teachers. Many people have been helped by the club. A 59-year-old man learnt how to apply for work online and found a great job. Now that he works and can take care of himself, his daughter has time to study atuniversity. A 61-year-old woman who was living alone has started a small online company together with two friends. She no longer feels lonely, and her company has become quite successful.Jan has started taking online classes to learn more about how to use the Internet to make society better. She believes that it is highly important to bridge the digital divide and make sure that everyone has access to the Internet and knows how to use technology. Her next goal is to start a charity website to raise money for children in poor countries.Jan’s life has been greatly improved by the Internet. “when you go through tough times, you meet others who are facing similar challenges.” Jan says. “Thinking about other people’s situation inspired me to offer help.”Reading and writingToday I thought I’d blog about a question that has been asked many times-how do you stay safe online and avoid bad experiences on the Internet? I’m not an expert, but many years as a blogger have taught me a thing or two.First of all, there’s the golden rule of the Internet: if you see orread something that makes you feel uncomfortable, leave the site immediately. Don’t post comments or click on anything. Second, protect you privacy. Don’t give out your address or phone number. Someone might use the information to steal your identity. Identity theft is a common and serious problem. Third, be polite. Being online is no excuse for being rude, and you don’t want to become a target for a troll or cyberbully. A troll is a person who posts comments or questions in order to stir up trouble online. Trolls often use several false names so that they can stay on a site. A cyberbully uses the Internet to be mean to others. Like a troll, a cyberbully will also write something mean but it is usually directed at particular people. He or she may also post embarrassing photos and information about these people. However, the more polite you are, the less likely it is you will be attacked.Have you had any bad experiences online, or do you have some good advice for staying safe? Post your comments below!。

Going HomeI first heard this story a few years ago from a girl Ihad met in New York's Greenwich Village.Probably the storyis one of those mysterious bits of folklore① that reappearevery few years,to be told a new in one form oranother. However,I still like to think that it really didhappen, somewhere, sometime. They were going to Fort Lauderdale—three boys and three girls—and when they boarded the bus, they were carrying sandwiches and wine in paper bags, dreaming of golden beaches as the gray cold of New York vanished② behind them.As the bus passed through New Jersey, they began to notice Vingo. He sat in front of them, dressed in a plain, illfitting suit, never moving, his dusty face masking his age.He kept chewing the inside of his lip a lot, frozen into some personal cocoon ③ of silence.Deep into the night, outside Washington, the bus pulled into Howard Johnson's,and everybody got off except Vingo. He sat rooted in his seat, and the young people began to wonder about him, trying to imagine his life:perhaps he was a sea captain,a runaway from his wife,an old soldier going home. When they went back to the bus,one of the girls sat beside him and introduced herself.“We're going to Florida,” she said brightly.“I hear it's really beautiful.”“It is,” he said quietly,as if remembering something he had tried to forget.“Want some wine?” she sa id.He smiled and took a swig④.He thanked her and retreated again into his silence. After a while, she went backto the others, and Vingo nodded in sleep. In the morning, they awoke outside another HowardJohnson's,and this time Vingo went in.The girl insisted thathe join them.He seemed very shy,and ordered black coffeeand smoked nervously as the young people chattered aboutsleeping on beaches. When they returned to the bus,the girl sat with Vingo again, and after a while, slowly and painfully,he told his story. He had been in jail in New York for the past four years, and now he was going home.“Are you married?”“I don't know.”“You don't know?” she said.“Well, when I was in jail I wrote to my wife,” he said.“I told her that I was going to be away a long time, and that if she couldn't stand it,if the kids kept asking questions,if it hurt too much, well, she could just forget me,I'd understand.Get a new guy,I said she's a wonderful woman, really something and forget about me.I told her she didn't have to write me for nothing. And she didn't.Not for three and a half years.”“And you're going home now,not knowing?”“Yeah,” he said shyly.“Well, last week, when I was sure the parole⑤ was coming through,I wrote her again. We used to live in Brunswick, just before Jacksonville, and there's a big oak tree just as you come into town.I told her that if she'd take me back, she should put a yellow handkerchief on the tree, and I'd get off and come home.If she didn't want me,forget it—no handkerchief, and I'd go on through.”“Wow,” the girl exclaimed. She told the others, and soon all of them were in it,caught up in the approach of Brunswick, looking at the pictures Vingo showed them of his wife and three children. The woman was handsome in a plain way,the children still unformed in the muchhandled snapshots⑥.Now they were 20 miles from Brunswick, and the young people took over window seats on the right side, waiting for the approach of the great oak tree. The bus acquired a dark, hushed mood, full of the silence of absence and lost years.Vingo stopped looking, tightening his face into the excon's mask,as if fortifying himself against still another disappointment. Then Brunswick was ten miles, and then five. Then, suddenly, all of the young people were up out of their seats, screaming and shouting and crying, doing small dances of joy.All except Vingo.Vingo sat there stunned, looking at the oak tree.It was covered with yellow handkerchiefs—20 of them,30 of them, maybe hundreds,a tree that stood like a banner of welcome billowing in the wind.As the young people shouted, the old con rose andmade his way to the front of the bus to go home.

Wizard of Oz(Excerpt)Dorothy lived in the midst of the great Kansas prairies, with Uncle Henry, who was a farmer, and Aunt Em,who was the farmer’s wife。
Their house was small, for the lumber to build it had to be carried by wagon many miles。
There were four walls,a floor and a roof, which made one room;and this room contained a rusty looking cookstove,a cupboard for the dishes,a table, three or four chairs, and two beds。

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
“What's gone with that boy,I wonder? You TOM!” No answer.
The old lady pulled her spectacles down and looked over them about the room;then she put them up and looked out under them. She seldom or never looked through them or so small a thing as a boy;they were her state pair, the pride of her heart, and were built for “style”,not service—she could have seen through a pair of stove—lids just as well. She looked perplexed for a moment, and then said, not fiercely, but still loud enough for the furniture to hear.“Well,I lay if I get hold of you I'll—”She did not finish, for by this time she was bending down and punching under the bed with the broom, and so she needed breath to punctuate the punches with. She resurrected nothing but the cat.
“I never did see the beat of that boy!” She went to the open door and stood in it and looked out among the tomato vines and “jimpson” weeds that constituted the garden. No Tom.So she lifted up her voice at an angle calculated for distance and
shouted:“Y-o-u-u Tom!” There was a slight noise behind her and she turned just in time to seize a small boy by the slack of his roundabout and arrest his flight.
“There!I might ‘a’ thought of that closet. What have you been doing there?”
“Nothing.”
“Nothing!Look at your hands. And look at your mouth. What is that truck?”
“I don't know,aunt.”
“Well,I know. It's jam—that's what it is.Forty times I've said if you didn't let that jam alone I'd skin you.Hand me that switch.”
The switch hovered in the air—the peril was desperate—“My!Look behind you, aunt!”
