That is certainly true of the images of fleeting moments of nature submitted by international ecologists and students for the British Ecological Society's (BES)annual photography competition. Here are a few of 2019's winning entries.Red NightPhotographed by Roberto Garcia Roa,it was declared last year's overall winner. The image captures both the beauty of the magnificent snake and its fear of human threats like fires. The ecologist says,"During my visit to Madagascar,I had the pleasure of finding this snake and photographing it.To offer a dramatic scene reflecting the conditions that these snakes are suffering,I used an external red light as a source of light to.capture the environment."The Rhino's Annual HaircutIt was photographed by ecologist Molly Penny. The ongoing demand for rhino (犀牛)horns has reduced the population to just 30,000 globally. To try to save the species, ecologists in South Africa, home to over 20,000 southern white rhinos, have decided to saw off (锯掉)it part of the animals' horns, which regrow every year."The Rhino's Annual Haircut," captured beautifully in the black﹣and﹣white photo by Molly Penny from the University of the West of England, reduces the risk of the animals being cruelly murdered. For the Love of FlamingosPhotographed by Peter Hudson,it captures a heart﹣shaped cloud of pink flamingos in Kenya, which is truly a sight like none other. The ecologist says,"Flamingos are all legs and necks but meanwhile beautiful and fascinating and I admit I have a deep passion for them,so I was thrilled when, flying high over Lake Magadi,I watched this flock from themselves into a heart shape."Flames in FlumesPhotographed by Nilanjan Chatterjee,it captures a water redstart waiting to catch an insect near a small waterfall. It was the best overall student submission. The photographer wanted to show the struggle the river birds are likely to face from the slowdown in water flow due to planned dams in rivers across India.(1)What can we know about "Red beginning graduate school,I was quickly charged with responsibilities and had to find time for studying by letting goof many other things I valued.Letting go of football and the violin was, however, self﹣defeating:it might have brought me more time in the short term, but spending that extra time on work only made me more stressed and less productive.Towards the end of the MSC (Master of Science)program,I started to lose my motivation and curiosity for science and research,as well as my creativity.Spending so much time and energy in the laboratory, and focusing all my attention on my thesis and courses, made me feel down and almost totally uninterested in my field ﹣not to mention short﹣tempered and oversensitive in my personal communications.Over time,I learnt from these experiences. When I started my PhD,I focused on balancing academic success with personal time﹣off, and made personal happiness a priority (首要事情)in my weekly schedule. My mentor (导师)and I discussed my work﹣life balance early in my program, and we arrange our lab responsibilities accordingly.I set boundaries for myself in new ways:rather than doing lab work all weekend,I'd play football or the violin,or visit loved ones, before allowing myself to work fora few hours. This was hard at first:I worried that it would affect my standing with my peers, and superiors, but I had learnt from experiences that an overloaded schedule can drain (使疲劳)you so much that you become unfocused and start making mistakes or forgetting important details.Since establishing a better work﹣life balance,I've been doing well in graduate school.Outside the lab,I've been able to take up a few leadership positions at my university because I'm not as stressed with my work.I serve as our department's student councilor and am also vice﹣president academic in the Health Sciences Graduate Students' Association. My advice is this:a healthy work﹣life balance isn't a luxury;it's a key part of success in graduate programs.(1)What is the author's problem?A.He must study hard to graduate.B.He must give up his hobby for study.C.He didn't know how to study more effectively.D.He didn't know how to deal with pressure.(2)Paragraph 2 shows.A.the challenges of an MSC programB.the consequences of giving up hobbiesC.the benefits of focusing on schoolworkD.the importance of balancing study and hobbies(3)To balance academic and personal life, the author.A.asks his peers for helpB.seeks to reduce his lab dutiesC.puts his hobbies first more oftenD.avoids schoolwork at weekends at all(4)When the author gets his hands too full,he.A.tends to put things on holdB.tends to lose the attention to detailsC.will lose his patience with his academic workD.will make a new schedule accordingly(5)What can be inferred from the author's personal experience?A.It's never too late to make a change in the university.B.It's easy to be work﹣life balanced in our lives.C.Multi﹣tasking has many advantages in the university.D.Work﹣life balance is necessary in the university.19.(10分)Purdue University researchers have engineered flying robots that behave like hummingbirds, trained by machine learning algorithms (计算程序)based on various techniques the bird uses naturally every day.The robot would be able to fly better through collapsed buildings to find trapped victims.Even though such a robot can't see yet,it senses by touching surfaces. Each touch changes an electric current, which the researchers realized that they could track.Xinyan Deng,a professor, and her colleagues at Purdue have been trying to decode (破译)hummingbird flight so that robots can fly where larger aircraft can't.Deng's group studied hummingbirds themselves for many summers in Montana. They documented key hummingbird actions, such as making a rapid 180﹣degree turn, and translated them to computer algorithms that the robot could learn from when connected with a simulation(模拟操作).Further study on the physics of insects and hummingbirds allowed Purdue researchers to build robots smaller than hummingbirds﹣﹣and even as small as insects﹣without compromising the way they fly.The smaller the size, the greater the wing flapping frequency, and the more efficiently they fly.The robots have 3D﹣printed bodies and wings made of carbon fiber. The researchers have built one hummingbird robot weighing 12 grams ﹣﹣the weight of the average adult hummingbird. The hummingbird robot can lift up to 27grams.Designing their robots with higher lift gives the researchers more room to eventually add a battery and sensing technology, such as a﹣camera or GPS.Currently, the robot needs to be tied to an energy source while It flies﹣but that won't be for much longer, the researchers say.The robots could fly silently just as a real hummingbird does, making them more ideal for covert (转换)operations.Robotic hummingbirds would not only help with search﹣and﹣rescue tasks, but also allow biologists to more reliably study hummingbirds In their natural environment through the senses of a realistic robot. This work is part of Purdue's 1501°anniversary.This is one of the four themes of the celebration's Ideas Festival, designed to show Purdue as an intellectual center solving real﹣world issues.(1)The hummingbird robot could be helpful in searching for victims.A.in a very wide areaB.in a desertC.in a dark placeD.in the sea(2)What can we know about the hummingbird robot?A.It is as light as an insect.B.It can fly to any place.C.It can see where to go.D.The smaller it is,the better.(3)What is the disadvantage of the robotic hummingbird at present?A.It barely lifts its weight.B.It's not equipped with a battery.C.It can't fly too high in the sky.D.It produces a little noise outside.(4)Besides being useful in rescues, the hummingbird robot can help.A.biologists to study hummingbirdsB.biologists to study wildlifeC.transport dangerous goodsD.protect birds in the wild20.(15分)We all have our bad days.No one is going to wake up each and every morning in a cheery mood.Sometimes we all feel just a little bit grumpier (脾气暴躁的)than usual, and that's just a part of being human.Yet once we get to the office, many in the workforce feel it necessary to hide their emotions, whether they are in frustration, anger,or sadness.Interestingly,a new study finds keeping one's behavior at the office authentic will result in greater productivity and a better relationship with co﹣workers. In other words:act how you feel, and don't fake it.It's extremely common for the average workspace to preach an attitude of continuous positivity. While this may be beneficial from the CEO's viewpoint,it just isn't realistic when applied to real people with real problems and daily hardships. That's why,the research team have concluded, employees will actually feel better, work harder, and connect more with their colleagues if they don't hide their feelings with a fake smile.Over 2,500 working adults, from a variety of industries such as finance or engineering, took part in this research via surveys. The questionnaires measured two distinct types of on﹣the﹣job emotional regulation:surface acting and deep acting.Surface acting means faking happiness while interacting with other employees;and deep acting refers to actively trying to change one's emotions and feelings in order to be more pleasant at work. The study's authors were interested to see how common it is for working adults to regulate their emotions while on the clock, and if so,why? What benefits are employees gaining from such behavior? After analyzing all of the survey responses, researchers identified four distinct types of individuals who hide or regulate their emotions around co﹣workers."Non﹣actors" rarely hide their true feelings, and if they do,only to a very small extent."Low actors" usually take part in only slight deep and surface acting."Deep actors" perform lots of deep acting and low levels of surface acting, and "Regulators" exhibit high levels of both surface and deep acting.By far non﹣actors were the smallest identified group in the study.Regulators,or employees who tend to hide their true feelings most often, are usually motivated by feelings of self﹣interest. These people believe that by hiding their feelings they will gain access toadditional work resources and look good in front of their managers and co﹣workers.Deep actors,on the other hand, are usually more motivated by "pro﹣social" factors. This means they choose to hide their emotions because they believe it develops a healthier working environment.Regulators are the most likely of the four to experience great emotional tiredness and exhaustion.Meanwhile, deep actors tend to achieve improved well﹣being most frequently.(1)Many office workers tend to.A.show their angerB.behave naturallyC.focus on their jobs onlyD.pretend to be happy(2)What does the underlined word "preach" mean in the second paragraph?A.Promote.B.Forbid.C.Change.D.Ignore.(3)How was the study carried out?A.By performing experiments.B.By analyzing questionnaire data.C.By taking field trips to offices.D.By interviewing CEOs.(4)What do we know about "regulators"?A.They are straightforward and like to help others.B.They are more surface acting than deep acting.C.They like to build an image that will benefit them.D.They are self﹣interested and will do whatever it takes to succeed.(5)What conclusion can we draw from the passage?A."Non﹣actors" always hold back their true feelings on purpose.B."Low﹣actors" are most likely to display their true feelings.C.Hiding true feelings is sure to leave a good impression.D.It is worthwhile to become deep actors in a way.(6)Through the passage the author mainly intends to.A.stress the significance of displaying true feelingsB.highlight the importance of hiding true feelingsC.urge people to keep a cheerful emotion at workD.persuade people to better their working efficiency第II卷(非选择题共35分)第三部分:写作(共两节;满分10分)第一节:阅读表达(共1小题,每小题10分,满分10分)21.(10分)David Carter stands outside of the University of Texas' Austin campus every day, offering the same warm greeting to students who pass by."Hello,my friend!"Carter, now 68,is a beggar who once attended the school from 1972 to 1975.Then,he was involved in a crash and got serious injuries. He then had trouble with substance abuse and faced mental health challenges, leading him to drop out before completing his degree."If I could change one thing about my past life,I would have stayed in school," Carter says.He vagrants(无业游民,乞丐)or think that they are dangerous or unfriendly, and that idea just isn't true," says Chandler.Chandler got to know Carter and saw his potential."He completed 87 hours of course credits, which is enough for a degree for most people, but he just never finished," Chandler says. The student wrote a blog post about his new friend, and luckily, the right people heard about Carter and stepped in to help. The University of Texas readmitted Carter as a student, and a kind person who used to be a student UT offered to pay for Carter's tuition."I want to be a student and I want to learn," Carter said.Since the course requirements have changed,Carter is far from having the amount of credits needed to graduate. But hisfriend knows he's willing to take up the challenge."He is Tired of being behind schedule? Here are some important work tips that you can follow to improve your productivity.Focusing on One TaskSome people have the habit of multitasking, which is great, but it might distract you from the bigger picture. Multitasking might help you with different tasks. You might also feel like the jack of all trades (万事通) but your productivity won’t increase in the long run.Focus on one task at a time and this will allow you to complete that task with high standards. When the task is done, you can move on to the next one.Setting Small but Effective GoalsYou will be given large and challenging tasks at work and what matters is how you deal with them. Stress might be the normal response here but you can also play it smart. You can break any large task into small but manageable tasks, which will help you stay productive and will also make the best of time.Think of it like building blocks and you will have to focus on one small task at a time but the end result will be fascinating.Setting Self-Imposed (自己强加的) DeadlinesSetting self-imposed deadlines can actually help you be more productive at work Stress is a bad thing, but self-imposed stress can actually help us focus and be better. You can do really well with open-ended tasks or projects once you give yourself a deadline. Stick to that deadline and you will be surprised by the miracles that you can perform at work.Trying Following the “Two-Minute” RuleSteve Olenski is one of the finest entrepreneurs to date and he has given wonderful advice in the shape of the “Two-Minute” Rule. The “Two-Minute” Rule is basically about making the best out of small windows at work. Olenski tells us that if there is a task at work, and you can do it in 2 minutes, then you do it immediately. When you complete that small task, you don’t actually have to waste more time getting back to it, which also increases your productivity.36.By focusing on one task, you may________.A.feel like the jack of all trades B.finish that task with high standards C.distract yourself from the bigger picture D.reduce your work efficiency 37.What is the author’s suggestion for handling difficult tasks?A.Respond to them tensely.B.Make a plan in advance.C.Break them into manageable ones.D.Focus on the results all the time. 38.You can do well with open-ended tasks or projects if you________.A.learn to take a break B.perform miracles at workC.impose a deadline on yourself D.compare them to building blocks 39.What is TRUE about the “Two-Minute” Rule?A.It involves doing a small task without delay.B.It applies to all kinds of tasks.C.It is criticized by Steve Olenski.D.It requires getting back to tasks. 40.What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?A.To share his work experience with the reader.B.To point out the importance of time management.C.To introduce the ways of achieving goals.D.To offer tips on enhancing productivity.Once, during my summer holidays, my father was sick, but he worked in the rice field just the same, because there was so much to do. As I looked at his thin figure, crawling (缓慢移动) ahead of me, I thought of my own depressing future. I was tied to the land by job after backbreaking job, unlike other boys who had freedom to pursue happiness. Why were there people in the world who would never know what it was like to toil (苦干), and others, like me, who had been toiling ever since they were small boys, season after season, year after year? Why were some people sitting before electric fans or in air-conditioned rooms, while I was out of breath and sweating under the blazing sun? Why was there mud and more mud in front of me?Only we farmers were willing to crawl, to assume the lowliest of positions in order to have a better harvest. Even a horse, when working for man, stands tall. I was suddenly consumed with great pity and great respect for poor farmers, and the focus of my attention began to extend beyond myself and my family. This was an important turning point in my life. While resting beside a field one day, my brothers and I resolved to pursue useful knowledge and technology to help ourselves and other farmers improve our circumstances, and lighten our burden of labour. This resolve gave me strength so that when I went to university, lighten our burden of labour. This resolve gave me strength so that when I went to university, and later to the US on a scholarship, my spirit rose above personal hardships. Crawling in the mud had taught me to lake bleeding and sweating as part of my life, and not to be afraid in the face of difficulties. But what was more important was that I had learned the meaning of “You reap what you sow”.Mother used to say, “Judge a man not by his face, but by his fields.” I appreciate more and more the meaning of these words. The land is dependable, as long as you are willing to toil on it. When the wind blew and the green rice plants moved like waves in a sea, stunningly beautiful, a deep sense of satisfaction swelled up (充满) in me.I laboured hard in the simple, isolated countryside of my home, and I am proud of this. Although later I went into academic research, I shall always remember what working in the rice fields taught me: plant your feet firmly on the ground, work hard and you will be rewarded.41.What did the author think of his job as a farmer in Paragraph 1?A.Unhappy but promising.B.Free and meaningful.C.Busy but rewarding.D.Exhausting and hopeless.42.What motivated the author to change his present life?A.The concern for his father’s sickness.B.His pity and respect for poor farmers. The video app, which is owned by Chinese firm ByteDance, said it is introducing the feature to encourage teens to manage their screen time. TikTok added that the new limit comes after it brought in a prompt (提示符) last year, which helped increase the use of their screen time tools by 234%.Hitting the limit, users affected will receive a new passcode on the screen in their app to unlock extra time. Anyone who rejects the new 60-minute restriction and goes on to use the app for 100 minutes a day will receive a warning from TikTok to set their own screen time controls. Parents of children using the Family Pairing option on the app will also be able to set screen time limits, as well as access a dashboard (控制面板) which would give a breakdown of app usage.Cormac Keenan, head of trust and safety at TikTok, said the company had worked with researchers in developing the new limits. “Since there’s no agreement on the ‘right’ amount of screen time, we consulted the current academic research and experts from the Digital Wellness Lab at Boston Children’s Hospital in choosing this limit,” he said.Critics of the video app welcomed the screen time limit, but described it as the “tip of the iceberg” when it comes to TikTok’s response to young users’ exposure to the platform. “TikTok has won the race for the hearts and minds of 14 to 24-year-olds in the United States and the United Kingdom,” said Imran Ahmed, chief executive of the Center for Countering Digital Hate. “It is the one that needs to be dealt with most urgently.” Mr Ahmed said his centre’s research at the end of last year found that within minutes of opening a TikTok account, a 13-year-old girl user was receiving eating disorder and self-harm content in her feed. He called on the platform to focus its efforts not just on limiting screen time, but also to “clean up” feeds of harmful content to make it a “safe environment for children”.46.In the first paragraph, TikTok is introducing the new screen time limit to________. A.encourage in-person interactions B.increase the use of the platform C.help teens stay in control of their use D.avoid criticism from concerned parents 47.What will happen when users under 18 reach their screen time limit?A.Their parents will send them a warning message.B.They will be locked out of their account for the day.C.They must enter a passcode to continue using the app.D.Their parents must access a dashboard to activate the app.48.How did TikTok develop the new limits?A.By seeking expert advice.B.By consulting the government.C.By launching a survey among its users.D.By copying other social media platforms. 49.Which of the following best explains the underlined part in the last paragraph?A.An insufficient action to keep teens safe on TikTok.B.An noticeable part of network security problems.C.An urgent issue waiting for TikTok to deal with.D.An over reliance on TikTok among teens.50.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that________.A.TikTok exposes young users to mental disorder B.TikTok is dangerously addictive to teensC.TikTok appeals to young users worldwide D.TikTok is popular but not safe enough for teensHave you ever come out of a steamy hot shower and tried to look at your reflection in the mirror when it’s completely steamed and fogged up? I often think that is how we tend to view our beauty—through fogged up mirrors. We are seeing ourselves but the picture isn’t exactly clear! The mirrors have been fogged up through different life experiences and memories as we have grown up, and now blend together to form our own definition of our beauty. The first mirror is formed as a young child and is often based on what was said about us from our parents and those around us. I remember being told that I was a cute child, so that when I got a little older and was around six or seven and another child tried to tell me I was ugly- everything within me rose up against the statement because my self-belief in what my parents had said stood strong. The second mirror is the mirror of adolescence, those formative years when we are pushed into the big wild world and out of the protection of home. As a teenager I went to a boarding school, and I was one of the only two black people in the entire school. Children being naturally curious, I felt like I was asked a million and one different questions about both my hair and skin tone--and I don’t think there has ever been a time when I have been more acutely aware of my appearance, which in turn opened up the door for me to questionhow I looked and to thankfully embrace my differences. The final mirror comes from socially constructed ideas of beauty. We are often faced with numerous images in the media, popular culture, society, peers and social media, which can create a false ideal of beauty in our eyes. We tend to compare ourselves to those ideals and use it as some sort of margin (差值) of measurement. However, real beauty comes from within. It is acceptance of yourself, perceived flaws and all. You are a masterpiece, a unique blend of genes and life experiences. It’s essential to appreciate yourself like any other work of art or natural wonder, without judgement. Maybe it’s time to create a fourth mirror, a new mirror that is wiped clean and is minus the fog of comparisons, accusations, judgments and expectations.51.What do the fogged-up mirrors represent according to the first paragraph?A.The difficulties of seeing oneself in the mirror.B.The various sources of beauty standards.C.The unclear perceptions of one’s beauty.D.The life experiences and memories.52.How did the author react when someone called her ugly?A.She felt embarrassed.B.She completely denied it.C.She sought comfort from her parents.D.She questioned what her parents had said.53.What can we learn about social constructed ideas of beauty?A.They push teens out of home protection.B.They arouse acute awareness of one’s appearance.C.They may mislead people’s idea of beauty.D.They are the exact measurement of beauty.54.What does the author suggest as a possible fourth mirror?A.A mirror not affected by external factors.B.A mirror going against society’s expectations.C.A mirror reflecting one’s childhood experiences.D.A mirror showing the beauty ideals from social media.55.The passage is mainly written to tell us that we should________.A.bring happiness to those around usB.keep our resolve despite obstaclesC.change ourselves to achieve an idealD.embrace our real inner beauty四、阅读表达阅读下面的短文,并根据短文内容回答后面的问题。

Like most Native American children then, he liked to fish, hunt, swim, and play games outdoors. He was healthy and strong, but he had very little formal education. In 1950, Jim Thorpe was named the greatest American football player. He was also an Olympic gold medal winner. But Thorpe had many tragedies in his life.Jim had a twin brother who died when he was nine years old. By the time he was 16, his mother and father were also dead, Jim then went to a special school in Pennsylvania for Native American children. There, he learned to read and write and also began to play sports. Jim was poor, so he left school for two years to earn some money. During this time, he played on a baseball team. Theteam paid him only $15 a week. Soon he returned to school to complete his education. Jim was a star athlete(运动员)in several sports, including baseball, running, and football. He won many awards for his athletic ability, mainly for football. In many games, he scored all or most of the points for his team.In 1912, when Jim Thorpe was 24 years old, he became part of the U.S Olympic team. He competed in two very difficult events: the pentathlon and the decathlon. Both require great ability and strength. The pentathlon has five track and filed events, including the long jump and the 1500-meter race. The decathlon has ten track and field events, with running, jumping and throwing contests.People thought it was impossible for an athlete to compete in both the pentathlon and the decathlon. So everyone was surprised when Thorpe won gold medals in both events. When the King of Sweden presented Thorpe with his two gold medals, he said, "Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world." Thorpe was a simple and honest man. He just answered, "Thanks, King."第11题 From the passage we learn that Jim Thorpe was born in _______.A. IndiaB. PennsylvaniaC. OklahomaD. At present, we realize that although these are the areas with the worst air pollution, the problem is literally worldwide. On several occasions over the past decade, a heavy_cloud of air pollution has covered the east of the United States and brought health warnings in rural areas away from any major concentration of manufacturing and automobile traffic. In fact, the very climate of the entire earth may he infected by airpollution. Some scien- tists consider that the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in the air resulting from the burning of fossil fuels (coal and oil) is creating a "greenhouse effect"--conserving heat reflected from the earth and raising the world' s average temperature. If this view is correct and the world' s tempera- ture is raised only a few degrees, much of the polar ice cap will melt and cities such as New York, Boston, Miami, and New Orleans will be in water.Another view, less widely held, is that increasing particular matter in the atmosphere is blocking sunlight and lowering the earth' s temperature--a result that would be equally disastrous.A drop of just a few degrees could create something close to a new ice age, and would make agri-culture difficult or impossible in many of our top fanning areas. Today we do not know for sure that either of these conditions will happen (though one recent government report drafted by experts in the field concluded that the greenhouse effect is very possible). Perhaps, if we are lucky enough, the two tendencies will offset each other and the world' s temperature will stay about the same as it is now.第16题As pointed out at the beginning of the passage, people used to think that air pollution __________A.caused widespread damage in the countrysideB.affected the entire eastern half of the United StatesC.had damaging effect on healthD.existed merely in urban and industries areas答案:D第17题 As to the greenhouse effect, the author __________A.shares the same view with the scientistsB.is uncertain of its occurrenceC.rejects it as being ungroundedD.thinks that it will destroy the world soon答案:B第18题 The word "offset" in the second paragraph could be replaced by. __________A.slip intoB.make up forC.set upD.catch up with答案:B第19题 It can be concluded that __________A.raising the world' s temperature only a few degrees would not do much harm to life on earthB.lowering the world' s temperature merely a few degrees would lead many major farming areas to disasterC.almost no temperature variations have occurred over the past decadeD.the world' s temperature will remain constant in the years to come。

Often called the “Oscars for dogs”, the award recognizes dogs who make extremely great contributions to society. The competition of 2020 attracted over 400 entries(参赛者)from across the country. These heroic dogs have gone above the call of duty, saving lives, comforting the ill and aged and reminding us of the powerful, age-old ties between animals and people. While all were impressive, it was tiny MacKenzie who wonthe judges' hearts.MacKenzie's growth was not easy. Born with a mouth disability, she had to be fed through a tube(管子)for the first year of her life. Despite her own struggles, she always seemed to think more of other animals in need. “Never have I seen such a will to live. Though sick, she carefully looked after the baby animals at the rescue(救助)center,” said her caretaker.A life-saving operation performed in 2014 gave MacKenzie the ability to eat independently. The seven-year-old chihuahua is now working for the Mia Foundation, an organization that rescues and nurses animals with inborn disabilities. The chihuahua does an excellent job and has raised various animals. She plays nurse, cleans, comforts and hugs them, acting as their mother and teaching them how to socialize, play and have good manners. In addition to her role as an animal caretaker, MacKenzie also visits schools to educate kids about the importance of accepting physical differences in both animals and people. Because it already surrounds us in the built environment, researchers have been exploring the idea of using concrete to store electricity—turning buildings into giant batteries. The idea has been gaining ground as we have come to increasingly rely on renewable energy from the wind and sun: rechargeable batteries are necessary when the breeze dies down or darkness falls.Experimental concrete batteries have only managed to hold a small part of what a traditional battery does. But one team now reports in Buildings that it has developed a rechargeable original model that could represent a more than 900 percent increase in stored charge, compared with earlier attempts.A live-in concrete battery might sound unlikely. Still, "you can make a battery out of a potato," notes Aimee Byrne. In a future where sustainability is key, she likes the idea of buildings that avoid waste by providing shelter and powering electronics.Although the new design stores more than 10 times as much power as earlier attempts, it still has a long way to go: 200 square meters of it "can provide about 8 percent of the daily electricity consumption" of a typical U.S. home, Zhang says. This is not enough to compete with today's rechargeable devices. "We're getting milliamps (毫安) out of concrete batteries—we're not getting amps (安培), "Byrne says." We're getting hours as opposed to days of charge." But she adds that" concrete batteries are completely in their childhood, compared to other battery designs." The earliest batteries were simple andbulky. Researchers experimented with new materials and designs for more than a century to develop today's small devices. Byrne suggests concrete-based energy storage could undergo a similar evolution. "The whole idea is that we're looking far into the future," she says. "We're playing thelong game with it."12. What can we learn about the concrete batteries?A. They become increasingly renewable.B. They are the most consumed batteries.C. They are being developed by researchers.D. They will replace energy from the wind and sun.13. Why does Byrne mention a battery out of a potato?A. To show it is easy to build concrete batteries.B. To argue it is possible to develop concrete batteries.C. To make her statement more interesting.D. To call on people to protect the environment.14. What does the underlined word "bulky" in Paragraph 5 mean?A. HeavyB. CheapC. EfficientD. Small.15. What doesByrne think of concrete batteries?A. They beat today's rechargeable devices.B. They are simple and bulky.C. They have a doubtful future.D. They have a long way to go.

AElectric Shocks Can Be FatalGovernment statistics recently showed that in theUK, more than 3,000 people a year experience electric shocks in their homes. A smaller number of people are killed after they touch the power lines outside their homes. Electric shocks can cause a person's heart or breath to stop and are potentially fatal. It is essential for people to learn basic techniques to deal with such emergencies. What to do?● If you are the first person to reach someone who has an electric shock, don't touch him or her!● If the victim is still holding the appliance that gives him or her the shock (e.g. a hair dryer), unplug it or turn off the power at its source.Under no circumstances can you try to move the appliance with your hands!● Ifyou can't turn off the power, use a piece of wood, like a broom handle or a chair, to separate the victim from the appliance or the power source. You may even be able to do this with a folded newspaper.● The victim must remain lying down. If he or she isunconscious, the victim should be placed on his or her side. But he or she should not be moved if there is a possibility of neck or spine injuries unless it is ly necessary.● It is essential to maintain the victim's body heat, so make sure you cover him or her with a blanket before you do anything else. If the victim is not breathing, apply mouth-to-mouth resuscitation (人工呼吸). Keep the victim's head low until professional help arrives.● If the electric shock has been caused by an external power line, the dangers to the victim and to anybody providing first aid are much greater.1. What kind of passage is it?A. An advertisement.B. A horror story.C. A news report.D. First aid emergency advice.2. The underlined sentence implies that ________.A. you should move the applianceB. you should pick up the appliance and turn off the electricityC. it is very dangerous to touch the appliance with your handsD. it is unnecessary to unplug the appliance with your hands3. When a person has got an electric shock, you should ________.A. separate the victim from the appliance and let him sit upB. keep the victim warm and help him or her breathe againC. move the victim onto his or her side if he or she has got neck injuriesD. keep the victim's head high until professional help arrivesBWho is a genius? This question has greatly interested humankind for centuries.Let's state clearly: Einstein was a genius. His face is almost the international symbol for genius. But we want to go beyond one man and explore the nature of genius itself. Why is it that some people are so much more intelligent or creative than the rest of us? And who are they?In the sciences and arts, those praised as geniuses were most often white men, of European origin. Perhaps this is not a surprise. It's said that history is written by the victors, and those victors set the standards for admission to the genius club. When contributions were made by geniuses outside the club—women, or people of a different color1 or belief—they were unacknowledged and rejected by others.A study recently published bySciencefound that as young as age six, girls are less likely than boys to say that members of their gender(性别)are “really, really smart.” Even worse, the study found thatgirls act on that belief: Around age six they start to avoid activities said to be for children who are “really, really smart.” Can our planet afford to have any great thinkers become discouraged and give up? It doesn't take a genius to know the answer: ly not. Here's the good news. In a wired world with constant global communication, we're all positioned to see flashes of genius wherever they appear. And the more we look, the more we will see that social factors(因素)like gender, race, and class do not determine the appearance of genius. As a writer says, future geniuses come from those with “intelligence, creativity, perseverance(毅力), and simple good fortune, who are able to change the world.”4. What does the author think of victors' standards for joining the genius club?A. They're unfair.B. They're conservative.C. They're objective.D. They're strict.5. What can we infer about girls from the study inScience?A. They think themselves smart.B. They look up to great thinkers.C. They see gender differences earlier than boys.D. They are likely to be influenced by social beliefs6. Why are more geniuses known to the public?A. Improved global communication.B. Less discrimination against women.C. Acceptance of victors' concepts.D. Changes in people's social positions.7. What is the best title for the text?A. Geniuses Think AlikeB. Genius Takes Many FormsC. Genius and IntelligenceD. Genius and LuckCThe history of the flying car is almost as old as that of powered flight itself. It started with the Curtiss Autoplane of 1917, an awkward-looking machine with removable wings. It never left the ground. Later machines made it into the skies but failed to take off commercially. Money is now pouring into flying taxis. On March 30th Lilium, a German company that develops them, announced a merger with SPAC, an acquisition company that values it at $3. 3 bn -- a sign that investors think the business will fly. Thanks to better batteries and lightweight materials, some of them are ready to carry passengers. Up to 300 firms are working on short-range battery-powered craft that take off and land vertically. Carmakers, tech companies and others are investing money into the field. The government isoffering a glide pathto certification.America's Federal Aviation Administration is engaged in the process with around 30 firms, says Natasha Santha of LEK, a consulting company.Midway between a cab and a helicopter, flying taxis have distinct advantages over both. Quiet electric motors allow them to operate frequent services. They require only a patch of concrete to land, unlike noisy helicopters, which face severe operating restrictions in most cities. They can fly four or five times faster than a cab can drive and do not get stuck in traffic. Prices can be kept low by ride-sharing. Joby, based inCalifornia, says its five-seater machine will enter commercial service in 2024. The firm calculates the initial cost of around $4 per person per mile may soon fall by 25%. A trip fromManhattanto JFK airport would then cost $30-40 per passenger. The real revolution will come when full autonomy takes out the cost of a pilot. Archer hopes to run such aircraft by 2028. They face fewer obstacles in the air than earth-bound cars do on the road; airliners mostly fly onautopilot as it is. Still, as one industry insider puts it, it is probably best to accustom passengers and regulators to airborne taxis before getting rid of the driver.8. What can we learn from Paragraph 1?A. The flying car can date back to the 1920s.B. Investors see the potential of the business of the flying car.C. The flying car never left the ground successfully in history.D. A German company has launched a new flying car into the market.9. What does "offering a glide path" in Paragraph 2 probably refer to?A. Giving the green light.B. Providing timely assistance.C. Presenting legal guidance.D. Conducting strict management.10. Which of the following is the strength of flying taxis?A. Costing as little as cabs.B. Saving passengers from the traffic jam.C. Reducing air pollution.D. Having no operating restrictions.11. What can be inferred about the flying taxis from the last paragraph?A. They will develop faster than cars.B. Passengers will quickly get used to taking them.C. The regulators will take measures to promote them.D. Autopilot flying taxis will probably replace those with pilots.DRichard Campbell is a secondary school student. He is15 years old. He lives in a small town in the north ofEngland. Professor Tannen believes that, for woman, private talking is a way to establish and test intimacy. For men, private talking is a way to explore the power structure of a relationship.Teaching is one job where the differences between men"s and women"s ways of talking show. When a man teaches a woman, says Professor Tannen,he wants to show that he has more knowledge, and hence more power in conversation. When a woman teaches another woman, however, she is more likely to take a sharing approach and to encourage her student to join in.But Professor Tannen does not believe that women are naturally more helpful. She says women feel they achieve power by being able to help others. Although the research suggests men talk and interrupt people more than women, Professor Tannen says, women actually encourage this to happen because they believe it will lead to more intimacy and help to establish a relationship. Some scientists who are studying speech think that the brain is pre?programmed for language. As we are usually taught to speak by women,it seems likely that the brain must have a sexual bias(倾向性)in its programming, otherwise male speech patterns would not arise at all.1.In the opinion of the writer, women encourage men to talk because_________.A.it will lead to more intimacy and help to establish a relationshipB.it will help to establish status with their listenersC.it will help to express more clearlyD.it will help to communicate better2.There are_______in little girls"conversation than in boys".A.fewer doubtsB.more demandsC.more doubtsD.fewer uncertainties3.Some scientists believe that brain is pre-programmed for language. The word "pre programmed"means_______.A.programmed alreadyB.programmed before one is bornC.programmed earlyD.programmed by women4.In private conversation, women speakA.the same things as menB.less than menC.more than menD.as much as men5.The theme of this article is_______.A.women are naturally more helpfulB.men and women talk different languagesC.men talk most and interrupt other speakers moreD.little girls"conversation is less definite参考答案:1.A2.C3.B4.D5.B2020年天津专升本大学英语模拟练习题(二)1.只要明天天气好,我们就和同学一起去游泳。

However, sinceChina's economy took off in the last decade, street vendors have gradually disappeared from the streets and many of them opened shops of their own.Fast forward to today, street vendors have come into our sight again after cities such asChengduand Yantai succeeded in creating hundreds of thousands of jobs by giving street stalls permission to operate.China's tech industry was quick to jump on the street vendor trend, with tech giants including Alibaba, Tencent, Meituan and flocking todish outcheap loans, offer support and payment solutions to millions of owners of newly established small businesses.Ant Financial, Alibaba's fintech arm, promised its mobile wallet app Alipay will give interest-free loans to 30 million vendors, and 70 billion RMB of interest-free credit line to consumers to make purchases everywhere, including street vendors. provided 50 billion RMB worth of quality goods for street vendors, and provided each one of them with a maximum 100,000 RMB interest-free loan to stock up.Tencent's WeChat announced to offer payment solutions, marketing supports and even training for up to 50 million street vendors, with the end goal of digitally transforming them to increase their income.Guangzhoucity partnered with WeChat this month to hold a live streaming shopping festival to improve sales of local produce. "Street Vendor Economy” Greatly Increases People's IncomeC. The Whole Nation Are Involved in a New Economy ModelD.China's Major Tech Companies Are Helping With "Street Vendor Economy”CNowadays organic food hasbecome a fashion. Organic food sales reached a record of $ 45.2 billion in 2017, making it one of the fastest-growing parts of American agriculture. Some people may buy organic food for these reasons like resource cycling and biodiversity, but most people may choose organic food because they think it's healthier. While a small number of studies have shown relationships between eating organic food and reducing risks of being ill, no studies, up to now, have answered the question whether eating organic food can improve health.According to the United States Department of Agriculture(USDA), organic food does not suggest anything about health. In 20155 Miles McEvoy, then chief of the National Organic Program for the USDA, refused to admit any health benefits of organic food, saying the question has nothing to do with the National Organic Program. Instead, the USDA thinks that organic refers to a production method that increases cycling of resources keeps ecological balance, and protects biodiversity.I'm an environmental health scientist who has spent over 20 years studying pesticides that do harm to human beings. Several years ago, I was part of the study on whether an organic diet can reduce pesticide exposure. Thisstudy focused on a group of pesticides which have always been harmful to children's brain development. We found that children who ate traditional diets had nine times higher exposure to these pesticides than children who ate organic diets.Last month, I published a small study that suggested a path forward to answering the question whether eating organic food actually improves health. My study got a lot of attention. While the results were novel, they didn't answer the big question. As I toldThe New York Timesin 2003, “What does this really mean for the safety of my kids? But we don't know. Nobody does. It was true then, and it's still true now.”8. Why do most people prefer to buy organic food?A. For its health benefits.B. For biodiversity.C. For its delicious taste.D. For resource cycling.9. What does the USDA suggest about organic food?A. It can improve people's health.B. It is produced in an environment-friendly way.C. It can reduce risks of being ill.D. It has nothing to do with the National Organic Program.10. What can be concluded from the author's study?A. Pesticides don't harm children's brain.B. Traditional diets benefit people's health.C. Organic diets can reduce pesticide exposure.D. The results are meaningful to children's safety.11. What is the best title for the text?A.What Is Organic Food?B. Is Organic Food Healthier?C. How Should We Avoid Pesticides?D. What Are the Benefits of Organic Food?DYour best friend that follows you around when the sun comes out - your shadow - doesn’t serve an important function like your heart or brain, but what if you could use shadows to create electricity? When using solar panels (电池板) that are powered by light, shadows can be boring because it means electricity can’t be created. However, researchers from the National University of Singapore have engineered a way to create power from the shadows present everywhere.A team of the university created a machine that can collect energy from shadows. It is created by placing a thin coating of gold onto silicon (硅). Like in a normal solar panel, when put in light, the silicon electrons (电子) become energized and the energized electrons then jump from the silicon to the gold. The voltage (电压) of the part of the machine that is placed in the light increases to the dark part and the electrons in the machine flow from high to low voltage. They are sent through an external circuit (外电路) creating a current that can be used topower another machine. The greater the contrast between light and dark, more energy is provided by the machine. The team isworking on improving the performance of the machine, borrowing approaches from solar panels to gather light. Increasing the amount of light the machines can receive allows them to better make use of shadows, as well as developing shadow energy collecting panels that can successfully gather from indoor lighting. The team is also researching the use of other materials other than gold to drop the price of the machine, meaning they would be more cost effective and easier to apply in society.Shadows are present everywhere and perhaps one day in the future we will be able to collect energy from them by placing the shadow-effect energy machine around the world in places that have been considered unfit for solar panels to work, or indoors. “A lot of people think that shadows are useless,” Tan says, but “anything can be useful, even shadows.”12. What is Paragraph 1 mainly about?A. Your best friend always stays with you after the sunrise.B. The shadow has the same function as the heart and brain.C. Shadows can stop solar panels from creating electricity.D. Researchers have found a way to create power from shadows.13. What is the key working principle of the machine mentioned in the text?A. The silicon produces electricity when it is in the light.B. The gold produces power with the help of the silicon.C. The energized electrons flow from high to low voltage.D. An external circuit creates current using another machine.14. How does the team improve the performance of the machine?A. Using solar panels in the machine.B. Increasing the amount of light received.C. Developing light energy collecting panels.D. Bringing down the price of gold.15. Which of the following is the best place to apply the machine?A. A gym.B. A park.C. A farm.D. A playground.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Children’s Museum of the Arts.BI was at my parent’s dinner table. Before me was a worn journal of thin and discolor1 ed pages. It was my grandfather’s journal and now belonged to my father. My grandfather had passed away in the months leading up to my birth. I never got to visit the places he had frequented and the people who had been a part of his life’s journey.I was now about to enter his world, through the words he had left behind. Within minutes, I wascaptivatedby the power of the written words. In the magical script (笔迹) before me, I was transported to another age when food was an everyday art, planned, prepared and enjoyed in the company of others, and a time when people had the heart to pause their own lives to embrace (拥抱) each other’s struggles. All this was conveyed to me in the beauty of the words that flowed together to connect with the writer’s mind and understand the world they lived in.That kind of writing seems to be lost on us today. We have gotten used to writing in bite-sized pieces for a public looking for entertainment, and hungry for information. No wonder, there are nearly 200 million bloggers on the Internet and a new blog is created somewhere in the world every half a second. Instead of adding to our collective wisdom, most of these writings reflectthe superficiality (肤浅) and impatience of our day and age. This not only robs us of the skill of writing impressive essays, it also prevents us from exploring what is indeed important. Writing humbles (使谦卑) us in a way that is vital for our character growth, by reminding us about the limits of the self and our appropriate place in the vast flow of life. Writing frees us by helping us explore the unknown so that we really open up to magic of the world around us. I saw all of this in the writing of my grandfather. And I’ve seen it again and again in the writings of the greatest thinkers of humanity. Their writing reflect deep thought on issues of human importance.4. The underlined word “captivated” in the second paragraph can be replaced by “________”.A. puzzledB. frightenedC. attractedD. defeated5. In the author’s grandfather’s age, people ________.A. lived a hard lifeB. cared about each otherC. were fond of writingD. treated food as an art6. The author begins the text with her grandfather’s journal in order to ________.A. show her respect to her grandfatherB. present the importance of good writingC. express her interest in reading as well as writingD. raise the problems with today’s writing7. In the last paragraph, the author is trying to _________.A. discuss what good writing is likeB. express her strong desire to learn writing skillsC. stress the effects of her grandfather’s journal on herD. show her admiration for her grandfather’s writingCThe far side of the moonis a strange and wild region, quite different from the familiar and mostly smooth face we see nightly from our planet. Soon this rough space will have even stranger features: it will be crowded with radio telescopes.Astronomers are planning to make the moon's distant side our newest and best window on the cosmic(宇宙的) dark ages, a mysterious era hiding early marks of stars and galaxies. Our universe was not always filled with stars. About 380,000 years after the big bang, the universe cooled, and the first atoms of hydrogen formed. Gigantic hydrogen clouds soon filled the universe. But for a few hundred million years, everything remained dark, without stars. Then came the cosmic dawn: the first stars flickered, galaxies came into existence and slowly the universe's largescale structure took shape. The seeds of this structure must have been present in the darkage hydrogen clouds, but the era has been impossible toprobeusing optical(光学的) telescopes—there was no light. And although this hydrogen produced longwavelength(or lowfrequency) radio emissions, radio telescopes on Earth have found it nearly impossible to detect them. Our atmosphere either blocks or disturbs these faint signals; those that get through are drowned out by humanity's radio noise.Scientists have dreamed for decades of studying the cosmic dark ages from the moon's far side. Now multiple space agencies plan lunar missions carrying radiowavedetecting instruments—some within the next three years—and astronomers' dreams are set to become reality.“If I were to design an ideal place to do lowfrequency radio astronomy, I would have to build the moon,”says astrophysicist Jack Burns of the University of Colorado Boulder. “We are just now finally getting to the place where we're actually going to be putting these telescopes down on the moon in the next few years.”8. What's the purpose of building radio telescopes on the moon?A To research the big bang. B. To discover unknown stars.C. To study the cosmic dark ages.D. To observe the far side of the moon.9. What does the underlined word “probe” in Paragraph 3 possibly mean?A. Explore.B. Evaluate.C. Produce.D. Predict.10. Hydrogen radio emissions can't be detected on Earth because ________.A. there was no light in the dark agesB. they cannot possibly get through our atmosphereC. gigantic hydrogen clouds no longer fill the universeD. radio signals on Earth cause too much interference11. What can we infer from theunderlined sentence in the last paragraph?A. Scientists have to rebuild the moon.B. We will finally get to the moon's distant side.C. The moon is a perfect place to set up radio telescopes.D. A favorable research environment will be found on the moon.DSusan Scott, 71, is glad that she didn't think about her age when she took up bodybuilding at the age of 59.“I reinvent myself every ten years. I started my 60s as a bodybuilderand now I'm beginning my 70s as a writer,” she said. “People usually limit themselves by age, and it's discouraging. With age, I remain young at heart.”Dr Susan started bodybuilding at an age when most are considering retirement though she was an athlete from an early age. As a child in Venezuela, she took to gymnastics and later graduated with a physical education degree. Then she obtained a master's degree in education and later a Ph. D. in Adult Personal Development. She taught at Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, for 16 years, while raising two daughters.“I started bodybuilding when I met Steve Pfiester, a gym guy who practiced yoga. He invited me to his gym and offered to train me. I started in January and in June he took me to my first competition in Bradenton, Florida,” she recalled.Dr Susan's photos show that she has devoted long hours to taking care of her body. But she also develops her mind and spirit. On any given day, she gets up at 3 am to read books. At 4:30 am she's out to walk three miles and run another three. This is followed by yoga and a swim at the beach while the sun rises. After writing her journal and working on her book between 8 and 10 am, she hits the gym for at least two hours. “I don't lose track of time,” she said.Dr Susan's war on ageism has rubbed off on her two daughters, both in their early thirties. “They both take care of their bodies and minds. If you give them a good foundation as a parent, you know that they will always come back to their roots. I tried to remind myself of that during their difficult teen years.”12. What's Dr Susan's opinion on age?A. Age cannot be hidden.B. Age is a state of mind.C. Every age has its pains and sorrows.D. Old age is not suitable for further study.13. What made Dr Susan start bodybuilding?A. The need of her job.B. Her youthful dream.C. Steve Pfiester's influence.D. Her daughters' encouragement.14. Which of the following best describes Dr Susan's morning schedule?A. Dull.B. Tight.C. Flexible.D. Controversial.15. What can be inferred about Dr Susan from the last paragraph?A. She will set up a fitness foundation.B. She will soon return to retirement.C. She often thinks of her teenage years.D. She sets an example to her daughters.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
