2020年12月大学英语六级考试模拟试卷及答案(7)
2020年12月大学英语六级考试模拟试卷及答案(7)2020年12月大学英语六级考试模拟试卷及答案(7)Part Ⅱ Reading Comprehension (35 minutes)Directions:There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre.Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage:There are two methods of fighting, the one by law, theother by force; the first method is that of men, the second of beasts; but as the first method is often insufficient, one must have recourse to the second. It is, therefore, necessary for a prince to know well how to use both the beast and the man. This was covertly taught to rulers by ancient writers, who related how Achilles and many others of those ancient princes were given to Chiron the centaur to be brought up and educated under his discipline. The parable of this semi瞐nimal, semi瞙uman teacher is meant to indicate that a prince must know how to use both natures, and that the one without the other is not durable.A prince, being thus obliged to know well how to act as a beast, must imitate the fox, and the lion, for the lion cannot protect himself from traps, and the fox annot defend himself from wolves. Thosethat wish to be only lions do not understand this. Therefore,a prudent ruler ought not to keep faith when by doing so it would be against his interest, and when the reasons which made him bind himself no longer exist. If men were all good, this precept would not be good ; but as they are bad, and would not observe their faith with you, so you are not bound to keep faith with them. Nor have legitimate grounds ever failed a prince who wished to show colorable excuse for the nonfulfilment of his promise. Of this one could furnish an infinite number of examples, and show how many times peace has been broken, and how many promises rendered worthless, by the faithlessness of princes, and those that have best been able to imitate the fox have succeeded best. But it is necessary to be able to disguise this character well, and to be a great feigner and dissembler, and men are so simple and so ready to obey present necessities, that the one who deceives will always find those who allow themselves to be deceived.21.The author of the passage does not believe that ____.A) people can protect themselvesB) the truth makes men freeC) leaders have to be consistentD) princes are human22.The lion represents those who are ____.A) too trusting B) strong and carefulC) reliant on force D) lacking in intelligence23.The fox, in this passage, is ____.A) admired for his trickery B) no match for the lionC) pitied for his trick D) considered worthless24.The writer suggests that a successful leader must ____.A) be prudent and faithfulB) cheat and lieC) have principle to guide his actionsD) tell the people the truth about his opponent25.The writer would approve an unsuccessful politicalcandidate ____.A) gave up all his opportunitiesB) promised to try again next timeC) overthrew the government by forceD) told the people the truth about his opponentQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage:The forest from which Man takes his timber is the tallest and most impressive plant community on Earth. In terms of Man's brief life it appears permanent and unchanging, save for the seasonal growth and fall of the leaves, but to forester it represents the climax of a long succession of events. No wooded landscape we see today has been forest forall time. Plants have minimum requirements of temperature and moisture and, in ages past, virtually every part of Earth's surface has at some time been either too dry or too cold for plants to survive. However, as soon as climatic conditions change in favour of plant life, a fascinating sequence of changes occurs, called a primary succession.First to colonize the barren land are the lowly lichens, surviving on bare rock.Slowly, the acids produced by these organisms crack the rock surface, plant debris accumulates, and mosses establish a shallow root瞙old. Ferns may follow and, with short grasses and shrubs, gradually form a covering of plant life. Roots probe even deeper into the developing soil and eventually large shrubs give way to the first trees. These grow rapidly, cutting off sunlight from the smaller plants, and soon establish complete domination—closing their ranks and forming a climax community which may endure for thousands of years.Yet even this community is not everlasting. Fire may destroyit outright and settlers may cut it down to gain land for pasture or cultivation. If the land is then abandoned, a secondary succession will take over, developing much faster on the more hospitable soil. Shrubs and trees are among the early invaders, their seeds carried by the wind, by birds and lodged in the coats of mammals. For as long as it stands and thrives, the forest is a vast machine, storing energy and many elements essential for life.26.What does the forest strike mankind as permanent?A) The trees are in community.B) The forest is renewed each season.C) Man's life is short in comparison.D) It is an essential part our lives.27.What has sometimes caused plants to die out of the past?A) Interference from foresters.B) Variations in climate.C) The absence of wooded land.D) The introduction of new type of plants.28.In a “primary succession', what makes it possible for mosses to take root?A) The type of rock.B) The amount of sunlight.C) The amount of moisture.D) The effect of lichens.29.What conditions are needed for shrubs to become established?A) Ferns must take root.B) The ground must be covered with grass.C) More soil must accumulate.D) Smaller plants must die out.30.Why is a “secondary succession” quicker?A) The ground is more suitable.B) There is more space for new plants.B) Birds and animals bring new seeds.D) It is supported by the forest.Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage:Grandma Moses is among the most celebrated twentieth瞔entury painters of the United States, yet she had barely started painting before she was in her late seventies. As she once said of herself:“I would never sit back in a rocking chair, waiting for some one to help me.” No one could havehad a more productive age.She was born Anna Mary Robertson on a farm in New York State, one of five boys and five girls.(“We came in bunches, like radishes.”) At twelve she left home and was in domestic service until, at twenty瞫even, she married Thomas Moses, the hired hand of one of her employers. They farmed most of their lives, first in Virginia and then in New York State, at Eagle Bridge. She had ten children, of whom five survived;her husband died in 1927.Grandma Moses painted a little as a child and made embroidery pictures as a hobby, but only switched to oils in old age because her hands had become too stiff to sew and she wanted to keep busy and pass the time. Her pictures were first sold at the local drugstore and at a fair, and were soon spotted by a dealer who bought everything she painted. Three of the pictures were exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art, and in 1940 she had her firstexhibition in New York. Between the1930's and her death she produced some 2,000 pictures:detailed and lively portrayals of the rural life she had known for so long, with a marvelous sense of color and form.“I think really har d till I think of something really pretty, and thenI paint it.” she said.31.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A) Grandma Moses: A Biographical SketchB) The Children of Grandma MosesC) Grandma Moses: Her Best ExhibitionD) Grandma Moses and Other Older Artists32.According to the passage, Grandma Moses began to paint because she wanted to ____.A) decorate her homeB) keep activeC) improve her salaryD) gain an international reputation33.From Grandma Moses' description of herself in thefirst paragraph, it can be inferred that she was ____.A) independent B) prettyC) wealthy D) timid34.Grandma Moses spent most of her life ____.A) nursing B) paintingC) embroidering D) farming35.In line 14, the word “spotted” could best be replaced by ____.A) speckled B) featuredC) noticed D) damagedQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage:The producers of instant coffee found their product strongly resisted in the market places despite their manifest (明显的) advantages. Furthermore, the advertising expenditure for instantcoffee was far greater than that for regular coffee.Efforts were made to find the cause of the consumers' seemingly unreasonable resistance to the product. The reason given by most people was dislike for the taste. The producers suspected that there might be deeper reasons, however. This was confirmed by one of motivation research's classic studies, one often cited in the trade. Mason Haire, of the University of California, constructed two shopping lists that were identical except for one item. There were six items common to both lists:hamburger, carrots(胡萝卜), baking powder, bread, canned peaches and potatoes, with the brands or amounts specified. The seventh item, in the fifth place on both lists, read “11b. Maxwell House coffee” on one list and “Nescafe instant coffee” on the other. One list was given to each person in a group of fifty women, and the other list to those in another group of the same size. The women were asked to study their lists and then to describe, as far as they could, the kind of woma n (“personality and character”) who would draw up that shopping list. Nearly half of those who had received the list including instant coffee described a housewife who was lazy and a poor planner. On the other hand, only one woman in the other group described the housewife, who had included regular coffee on her list, as lazy; only six of that group suggested that she was a poor planner. Eight women felt that the instant瞔offee user was probably not a good wife! No one in the other group drew such a conclusion about the housewife who intended to buy regular coffee.36.The fact that producers found resistance to their product despite the fact that they spent more advertising money on instant than regular coffee shows that ____.A) advertising does not assure favorable sales resultB) companies spent more money on advertising than they shouldC) people pay little attention to advertisingD) the more one advertises the better the sales picture37.In this instance, the purpose of motivation research was to discover____.A) why people drink coffeeB) why instant coffee did not taste goodC) why regular coffee was successfulD) the real reason why people would not buy instant coffee38.This investigation indicated that ____.A) 50 percent of housewives are lazyB) housewives who use instant coffee are lazyC) many women believe that wives who use instant coffee are lazyD) wives who use regular coffee are good planners39.On the results of this test, the producers probably revised their advertising to show a ____.A) lazy housewife using regular coffeeB) hard瞱orking housewife using instant coffeeC) lazy housewife using instant coffeeD) man obviously enjoying the taste of instant coffee40.Implied but not stated:____.A) Despite its advantages, most people disliked instant coffee because of its taste.B) The advertising expenditure for instant coffee was greater than that for regular coffee.C) Very often we do not know the real reasons for doingthings.D) Taste is the principal factor in determining what we buy.おPart Ⅲ Vocabulary (20 minutes)Directions:There are 30 incomplete sentences in this part. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words ( not exceeding 10 words ).Students who score high in achievement needs tend to make higher grades in college than those who score low. When degree aptitude for college work, as indicated by College Entrance Examination Board Tests, is held constant, engineering students who score high in achievement needs tendto make higher grades in college than the aptitude test scores would indicate. We can define this need as the habitual desire to do useful work well. It is a salient influence characteristic of those who need little supervision. Their desire for accomplishment is a stronger motivation than any stimulation the supervisor can provide. Individuals who function in terms of this drive do not “bluff” in regard to a job that they fail to do well. Some employees have a strong drive for success in their work; others are satisfied when they make a living. Those who want to feel that they are successful have high aspiration for themselves. Thoughts concerning the achievement drive are often prominent in the evaluations made by the typical employment interviewer who interviews college seniors for executive training. He wants to find out whether the senior has a strong drive to get ahead or merely to hold a job. Research indicates that some who do get ahead have an even stronger drive to avoid failure.[FK)]Questions:(答题尽量简短,超过10个词要扣分。

【网络综合版】听力Conversation 1M: Good morning, safe house insurance. My name is Paul. How can I help you today? W: Morning. I wouldn’t say that it’s good from where I am standing. This is Miss Wilson, and this is the third time I’ve called this week since receiving your letter about our insurance claim. (1) I’m getting a little fed up with my calls about my claim being completely disregarded.M: Miss Wilson, thank you for calling back. Can I take some details to help me look at your claim?W: It’s Miss May Wilson, a 15 south sea road in Cornwall. And the details are that our village was extensively flooded 2 months ago. (2) The entire ground floor of our cottage was submerged in water. And five of us have been living in a caravan ever since. You people are still withholding the money we are entitled to overa bizarre, technical detail. And it’s not acceptable, Paul.M: Miss Wilson, according to the notes on your account, (3) the bizarre, technical detail that you mentioned refers to the fact that you hadn’t paid house insurance the month before the incident.W: That money left our account and wow that you should be paying out. You are suddenly saying that you di dn’t receive it on time. I’m really skeptical about this claim.M: The contract does say that any miss payment in a year will affect the terms and conditions of the insurance contract and may affect claims. Of course, I can pass you on to my manager to talk to you more about this.W: I’ve already spoken to him and you can tell him I’m furious now. And that your company has a lawsuit on its hands.(4) You will be hearing from my lawyer, good bye.Questions 1 to 4 are based on the conversation you have just heard.Question 1: What is the woman complaining about?1. B) Her claim has been completely disregarded.Question 2: What is the problem the woman’s family encountered?2. B) The ground floor of their cottage was flooded.Question 3: What has caused the so called bizarre, technical detail according to the man?3. A) The woman’s failure to pay her house insurance in time.Question 4: What does the woman say she will do at the end of the conversation?4. D) File a lawsuit against the insurance company.Conversation 2W: (5) How do you feel about the future of artificial intelligence? Personally, I feel quite optimistic about it.M: (5) AI? I’m not so optimistic actually. In fact it's, something we should be concerned about.W: Well, it will help us humans understand ourselves better and when we have a better understanding of ourselves, we can improve the world.M: Well, one thing is for sure, technology is evolving faster than our ability to understand it, and in the future AI will make jobs kind of pointless.W: (6) I think artificial intelligence will actually help create new kinds of jobs, which would require less of our time and allow us to be centered on creative tasks. M: I doubt that very much. Probably the last job that will be writing AI software and then eventually AI will just write his own software.W: At that time, we are going to have a lot of jobs which nobody will want to do.So we won’t need artificial intelligence for the robots to take care of the old guys like us.M: I don't know. (7) There's a risk that human civilization could be replaced bya superior type of digital life. AI will be able to completely simulate a personin every way possible. In fact, some people think we're in a simulation right now.W: That's impossible. Humans can't even make a mosquito. Computers only have chips, people have brains, and that's where the wisdom comes from.M: (8) Once it's fully developed, AI will become tired of trying to communicate withhumans as we would be much slower thinkers in comparison.W: I'm not so sure. A computer is a computer and a computer is just a toy.M: Computers can easily communicate incredibly fast, so the computer will just get impatient talking to humans. Then the amount you earn or how shrewdly you invest.(9) If you're under 30 years old, your goal should be to save 20% of your monthly income after tax deductions. This is irrespective of how much you earn. Approximately 50% should be reserved foressentials, like food and accommodation. The remaining 30% is for recreation and entertainment. But for many young people, it'll be difficult to designate such a large proportion of their income for savings. (10) If you find it hard to save any money at all start by cutting all unnecessary spending, allocate a tiny amount of 1 or 2% for savings, and gradually increase that amount. (11)Always keep that 20% goal in mind, prevent yourself from becoming complacent. It can be challenging to stick to such a strict plan. But if you adopt the right mindset, you should be able to make it work for you. So what should you be doing with the money that you are saving? Some must be kept easily accessible. In case you need some cash in an emergency, the largest proportion should be invested in retirement plans, either for your employer, all privately, you can keep some money for high risk, but potentially lucrative investments. Dividends can be reinvested or used to purchase something you like. By following this plan, you should hopefully be able to enjoy your life now, and still be financially secure in the future.Questions, 9 to 11 are based on the passage you have just heard.Q 9. What are people under 30 advised to do to achieve financial security?9. C) Save one-fifth of their net monthly income.Q10. What should people do if they find it difficult to follow the speaker's advice on their financial plan?10. D) Start by doing something small.Q 11. What does the speaker think is important for achieving financial security?11. A) A proper mindset.Passage TwoI work in advertising and I like to keep up with current trends, mainly because I'm aware that we live in an image obsessed world.(12)However, when I first started my job, occasionally I’d catch a glimpse of myself in the lifts and find myself thinking that I looked a total mess. Was I being held back by my choice of clothing? The short answer is “Yes”, especially when clients are quick to judge you on your style rather than your work.(13) But no one can be unique with her outfit every day. I mean that's why uniforms were invented. So here's what I did. I created my own uniform. To do this, I chose an appropriate outfit. Then I bought multiple items of the same style in different shades. Now, I never worry about what I'm wearing in the morning. Even if I do get a bit tired of just wearing the same classic pieces. (14)Overall, when it comes to work, you have to ask yourself with looking smarter can enhance my ability to do my job.For some, this question may not be an issue at all, especially if you work remotely and rarely see your colleagues or clients face to face. But if your job involves interacting with other people, the answer to this is often “yes”. (15) So rather than fighting the system, I think we should just do whatever helps us toachieve our goals at work. If that means playing it safe with your image, then let's face it. It's probably worth it.Questions 12 to 15 are based on the passage you have just heard.Q 12. What do we learn about the speaker when she first started her job?12. A) She found her outfit inappropriate.Q 13. Why were uniforms invented according to the speaker?13. D) To save the trouble of choosing a unique outfit every day.Q 14. What does the speakers say about looking smarter?14. B) It matters a lot in jobs involving interactions with others.Q 15. What does the speaker advise people to do in an image obsessed world? 15. C) Do whatever is possible to look smart.Recording OneDid you know that Americans have approximately 3 times the amount of space we had 50 years ago? Therefore, you'd think would have sufficient room for all of our possessions. On the contrary, the personal storage business is now a growing industry. We've got triple the space, but we've become such enthusiastic consumers that we require even more. (16) This phenomenon has resulted in significant credit card debt, enormous environmental footprints, and perhaps not coincidentally our happiness levels have failed to increase over the same half century.I'm here to suggest an alternative. They’re having less might actually be a preferable decision. Many of us have experienced at some stage, the pleasure of possessing less. (17) I propose that less stuff and less space can not only help you economize, but also simplify your life. I recently started an innovative project to discover some creative solutions that offered me everything I required. By purchasing an apartment. There was 40 square meters instead of 60. I immediately saved $200,000. Smaller space leads to reduced utility bills and also a smaller carbon footprint, because it's designed around an edited collection of possessions, limited to my favorite stuff. I'm really excited to live there. How can we live more basically? Firstly, we must briefly cut the unnecessary objects out of our lives to stem consumption. We should think before we buy and ask ourselves: Will it truly make me happier? Obviously, we should possess some great stuff but we want belongings that we’re going to love for years. Secondly, we require space efficiency. We want appliances that are designed for use most of the time, not for occasional use. Why own a six burner when you really use even three burners? Finally, we need multifunctional spaces and housewares. I combined a movable wall with transforming furniture to get more out of my limited space. Consider my coffee table. It increases in size to accommodate ten. My office is tucked away, easily hidden. My bed simply pops out of the wall. For gas, I can relocate the movable wall and utilize the foldable guest beds I installed. I’m not saying we should all live in tiny apartments, but consider the benefits of an edited life. When you returnhome and walk through your front door, take a moment to ask yourselves. Could I do with a little life editing? Would that give me more freedom and more time? Question 16 to 18 are based on the recording you have just heard.Question 16. What has prevented American's happiness levels from increasing? 16. B) Their obsession with consumption.Question 17. What things should we possess according to the speaker?17. A) Things that we cherish most.Question 18. What do we learn about the items in the speaker’s home?18. C) They serve multiple purposes.Recording TwoNow, believe it or not, (19) people sometimes lie in order to maintain a good, honest reputation, even if it hurts them to do so. At least, this is what a team of scientists is suggesting with evidence to prove it.Picture this scenario—you often drive for work and can be compensated for up to 400 miles per month. Most people at your company drive about 300 miles each month. But th is month you drove 400 miles. How many miles do you think you’d claim in your expense report? The scientists asked this exact question as part of the study we’re discussing today. With surprising results, they found that 12% of respondents reported the distance they drove as less than the actual figure, giving an average answer of 384 miles. In other words, they lied about the number of miles, even though they would forfeit money they were owed. The researchers believe this was to seemhonest with the assumption being that others would be suspicious of a high expense claim. But why would people fabricate numbers to their own detriment? (20) The researchers explained that many people care a great deal about their reputation and how they’ll be judged by other s. If they care enough, they’re concerned about appearing honest and not losing the respect of others—maybe greater than their desire to actually be honest. The researchers assert that the findings suggest that when people obtain very favorable outcomes, t hey anticipate other people’s suspicious reactions and prefer lying and appearing honest to telling the truth and appearing as selfish liars. So why is this research important? Well, experts generally agree there are two main types of lie—selfish lies and lies that are meant to benefit others. The first, as you may predict, is for selfish gain, such as submitting a fraudulent claim to an insurance company, while the second involves lying to help others or not offend others. For example, telling a friend wh ose outfit you don’t like that they look great. But the researchers are suggesting a third type of lying: lying to maintain a good reputation. Now this hypothesis is new, and some skeptics argue that this isn’t a whole new category of lie. (21) But the findings seem intuitive to me. After all, one of the main motivations for lying is to increase our worth in the eyes of others. So it seems highly likely that people will lie to seem honest.Questions 19 to 21 are based on the recording you have just heard.Question 19: What did a team of scientists find in their study?19. D) Over 10% of the respondents lied about the distance they drove.Question 20: why would people fabricate numbers to their own detriment according to the researchers?20. B) They want to protect their reputation.Question 21: What does the speaker think of the researchers findings?21. C) They seem intuitive.Recording Three(22) Why do old people dislike new music? As I’ve grown older, I often hear people my age say things like, “T hey just don’t make good music like they used to.” (22) Why does this happen? Luckily, psychology can give us some insights into this puzzle. Musical taste begins crystallized as early as age 13 or 14. By the time we’re in our early 20s, these tastes get l ocked into place pretty firmly.(23) In fact, studies have found that by the time we turn 33, most of us have stopped listening to new music. Meanwhile, popular songs released when you in the early teens are likely to remain quite popular among your age group for the rest of your life. There could be a biological explanation for this. As there’s evidence that the brain’s ability to make subtle distinctions between different chords, rhythms, and melodies deteriorate rates with age, so to older people, newer, less familiar songs might all sound the same. But there may be some simpler reasons for older people’s aversion to new music.(24) One of the most researched laws of social psychology is something called the “mere exposure effect”, which, in essence, means that the more we’re exposed to something, the more we tend to like it. This happens with people we know, the advertisements we see, and the songs we listen to.When you’re in your early teens, you probably spend a fair amount of time listening to music or watching music videos. Your favorite songs and artists become familiar, comforting parts of your routine. For many people over 30, job and family obligations increase. So there’s less time to spend discovering new music. Instead, many will simply listen to old familiar favorites from that period of their lives when they had more free time.Of course, those teen years weren’t necessarily care f ree. They’re famously confusing, which is why so many TV shows and movies revolve around high school turmoil. Psychology research has shown that (25) the emotions that we experience as teens seem more intense than those that come later. And we also know that intense emotions are associated with stronger memories and preferences. Both of these might explain why the songs we listen to during this period become so memorable and beloved. So t here’s nothing wrong with your parents because t hey don’t like your music. Rather, it’s all part of the natural order of things.Questions 22 to 25 are based on the recording you have just heard.Question 22. What does the speaker mainly discuss in this talk?22. A) Older people’ s aversion to new music.Question 23. What have studies found about most people by the time they turn 33?23. C) They find all music sounds the same.Question 24. What do we learn from one of the most researched laws of social psychology?24. A) The more you experience something, the better you’ll appreciate it. Question 25. What might explain the fact that songs people listen to in their teen years are memorable and beloved?25. D) Teenagers’ emotions are more intense.听力参考答案:1.B)Her claim has been completely disregarded2.B) The groundfloor of their cottage was flooded3.A)Thewoman's failure to pay her house insurance intime4.D)Filea lawsuit against the insurance company .5.C) They disagree about the future of Al technology .6.D)Lesstime- consuming and focusing on creation7.C) Digitallife could replace human civilization8.A)It will be smarter than human beings9.C)Saveone-ffth of their net monthly income10.D) Start by doing something small11.A)A proper mindset12.A)She found her outfit inappropriate13.D) To save the trouble of choosing a unique outfit everyday14.B)It matters alot in jobs involving interactions withothers15.C)Do whatever is possible to looksmart .16.B) Their obession with consumption17.A) Things that we cherish most18.C) They serve multiple purposes19.D) Over 10%of the respondents lied about the distancethe drove20.B) They want to protect their reputation21.C)Theyseemintuitive.22.A)Olderpeople'sa version to new music .23.C) They find all music sounds the same .24.A) The more you experience something , the better youllappreciate it.25.D)Teenagers' emotions are more intense .翻译第一套港珠澳大桥(Hong Kong- Zhuhai-Macau Bridge)全长55公里,是我国一项不同寻常的工程壮举。

2020年12月四级考试模拟试卷及答案(9)Part Ⅱ Reading Comprehension (35 minutes)Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A),B),C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre. Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage:We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money, but most mistakes are about people. “Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen?” “When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy my luck?” “And Paul — why didn't I pick up that he was friendly just because I had a car?” When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it's too late. Why do we go wrong about our friends — or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don't really listen, we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, “You're a lucky dog.” Is he really on your side? If he says, “You're a lucky guy” or “You're a lucky gal,” that's being friendly. But “lucky dog”? There's a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn't see it himself. But bringing in the “dog” bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn't think you deserve your luck.“Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for” is another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped up in this phrase is the thought that your problem isn't important. It's telling you to think of all thestarving people in the world when you haven't got a date for Saturday night. How can you tell the real meaning behind someone's words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says square with the tone of voice? His posture? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you may save another mistake.21.When the writer recalls the things that happened between him and his friends, he ____.A) feels happy, thinking of how nice his friends were to himB) feels he ma y not have “read” his friends' true feelings correctlyC) thinks it was a mistake to view Jim as a friendD) is sorry that his friends let him down22.By saying “You're a lucky dog.”, the speaker ____.A) is just being friendlyB) expresses th e same meaning as “You're a lucky guy.” or“You ' re a lucky gal.”C) is humorous to apply the word “dog” to peopleD) has a hidden jealous feeling behind the words23.In listening to a person, the important thing is ____.A) to notice his tone, his posture, and the look in his eyeB) to listen to how he pronounces his wordsC) to check his words against his manner, his tone of voice, and his postureD) not to believe what he says24.If you followed the advice of the writer, you would____.A) weigh carefully what people say to determine theirreal meaningB) get along well with peopleC) trust what other people sayD) have no doubts about our friends25.This passage tries to tell you how to ____.A) avoid mistakes about both money and peopleB) say things elegantlyC) avoid mistakes in understanding what people tell youD) keep people friendly without trusting themQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage:。

H darvar orgamzat10nal soc10logy professor F rank Dobbin and others have since delved into why such programs have failed. D obbin combed through thousands of data· pomts and found that for white women and black men and women m management pos1llons, 1t actually made things worse. That'. s right: companies that introduced diversity tr aining would actually employ more women and black men today if they had never had diversity training at all. He singled out three situations i n which tra ining is doomed to fail: when it's mandatory; when it so much as mentions the law; or when it is specific to managers, as opposed to being offered to all employees. Unfortunately, he found, about 75% of finns with diversity-training program s fall i nto at least o ne of t hose c ategori es.[ E]Perhaps more to the point is the fact that the training infuriates (激怒)the people it's intended to educate: white men. "Many interpreted the key learning point as having to walk on eggshells around women and minorities—choosing words carefully so as not to offend. Some surmised (猜测)that it meant white men were villains, still others assumed that they would lose their jobs to minorities and women, while-others concluded that women and minorities were simply too sensitive," executives Rohini Anand and Mary-Frances Winters noted in a 2008 analysis of diversity training in the Academy of Management Learning & Education.[ F]Training done badly can also damage othenvise cordial relationships. Women and minorities often leave training sessions, thinking their co-workers must be even more biased than they had previously imagined. In a more troubling development, it turns out that telling people about others'biases can actually heighten their own. Researchers have found that when people believe everybody else is biased, they feel free to be prejudiced themselves. In one study, a group of managers was told that stereotypes are rare, while another group was told that stereotypes are common. Then both groups were asked to evaluate male and female job candidates. The managers who were told that stereotypes are common were more biased against the women. In a similar study, managers didn't want to hire women and found them unlikable. The evidence is damning.[ G]Yet companies continue to invest heavily in diversity training spending, by one estimate, almost $8 billion a year. It has led to what the Economist dubbed "diversity fati gu e". In a recent article, the magazine suggested that 12 of the most terrifying words in the English lan gu age are: I'm from human resources, and I'm here to organize a diversity workshop.[ H]Now companies are searching for more effective, less infuriating alternatives. Take tech firms, which have come under fire for being among the worst offenders when it comes to bias. The irony is that they have also been al the forefront of devising new ways to combat it.[ I]Can they tum around a culture where sex.i sm has not only been tolerated but in many cases celebrated?I sat down with Brian Welle, director of people, analytics at Google, who is tasked with helping leadthe latest trend: unconscious-bias training.[ J]We all have prejudices buried so deeply inside of us that we do n't know the y exist. Unconscious-b ias training is supposed to arm employees with the tools they need to recognize it and neutralize these prejudices. His role, Welle told me, was to ensure that "every decision we made, from hiring to promotion to pay to perf onnance, didn't have an unintended bias " against women or other underrepre sented groups. Welle seiz ed on an i nsight that has prove d to be key for anyone w ho is try ing to wipe out hid den biases: if we b elieve that ev eryone around us is tryin g hard to fight against those stereotype s and prejudices, we'11 do the same. Call it peer pressure, or call it a pack mental ity.Wha teve r it is, it wo rks. These reserves of knowledge continu e to increase with age: people's performance on vocabulary and general-knowledge tests keeps improving into their 70s. And experience can often compensate for cognitive decline. In an old but instructive study of typists ranging in age from 19 to 72, older workers typed just as fast as younger ones, even though their tapping speed was slower. They achieved this by looking further ahead in the text, which allowed them to keep going more smoothly. What does all this mean for a lifetime of continuous learning? It is found primarily in vertebrates(脊椎动物),in those species that are diurnal, and usually in those that spend much of their lives in the air, in open water or onopen plains. In birds, allelomimetic behavior is the rule rather than the exception, though it may occasionally be limited to particular seasons of the year as it is in the redwing blackbird. Its principal function is that of providing safety from predators(掠食者), partly because the flock can rely on many pairs of eyes to watch for enemies, and partly becauseif one bird reacts to danger, the whole flock is warned.Among mammals, allelomimetic behavior is very rare in rodents(啮齿动物), which almost never move in flocks or herds. Even when they are artificially crowded together, they do not conform in their movements. On the other hand, such behavioris a major system among large瞙oofed mammals, such as sheep. In the pack瞙unting carnivores(食肉类飞禽),allelomimetic behavior has another function of cooperative hunting for large prey(被捕食者) animals, such as moose.Wolves also defend their dens as a group against larger predators, such as bears. Finally, allelomimetic behavior is highly developed among most primate groups, where it has the principal function of providing warning against predators,as though combined defensive behavior is also seen in troops of baboons(狒狒).24. The main topic of the passage is the ____.。

2020年英语六级阅读理解预测题及答案(2)2020年英语六级阅读理解预测题及答案(2)In the last two hundred years there have been great changes in the method of production of goods. This is nowalso true of the building industry; for mechanization hasbeen introduced. System building can save both time and money. The principle of system building is that the building is made from a set of standard units. These are either made at the building-site or at a factory. Some designers, in fact, are standardizing the dimensions of rooms. They are made in multiples of a single fixed length, usually ten centimeters. This is called a modular (标准件的) system, and it means that manufactures can produce standardized fittings at a lower cost. The most important fact about system building is its speed. A ten-storey flat, for example, can be completed infour months. There are several new methods of system building. One is the panel method. In this case, the construction company sometimes erects a factory on the site. The walls and floorsof the building, called panels, are cast in a horizontal or vertical position. Conduits for electrical wires and sleeves for pipes are cast in the panels when they are being made. The moulds for making these castings are situated all around the building. After the concrete panels are cast, they are allowed toset and harden for a week. Next they are lifted by a tower crane on to any section of the building. There the panels are cemented together at their joints and the floor covering is laid. After the panels have been cemented together, the crane liftsa case into the area. It contains all the fittings to be installed, such as wash-basins, radiators and pipes. Finishing tradesmen, such as plumbers, plasterers, painters and electricians, follow behind to complete the work.In some building developments, in some countries, whole flats with internal features like their bathrooms, bedrooms and connecting stairs, and weighing as much as twenty tons, are carried to the building-site ready-made. A giant overhead crane is used to lift them into position. In the future, this method may become more widespread.1. The main difference between panel method and the method discussed in the last paragraph is_______.A. the latter uses ready-made internal featuresB. panels are cast in a level positionC. the former is used to build walls and floors while the latter to construct bathrooms or bedroomsD. the former is more expensive than the latter2. Which of these statements is TRUE of system building?A. It employs more men.B. It is difficult and dangerous.C. It can save both time and money.D. It means less mechanization.3. 2020年12月英语六级模拟预测题及答案阅读一The Present Is the Most ImportantShams and delusions are esteemed for soundest truths, while reality is fabulous. If men would steadily observe realities only, and not allow themselves to be deluded, life, to compare it with such things as we know, would be like a fairy tale and the Ara bian Nights’ Entertainments. If we respected only what is inevitable and has a right to be , music and poetry would resound along the streets. When we are unhurried and wise, we perceive that only great and worthy things have any permanent and absolute existence, --that petty fears and petty pleasure are but the shadow of reality. This is always exhilarating and sublime. By closing the eyes and slumbering, by consenting to be deceived by shows, men establish and confirm their daily life of routine and habit everywhere, which still is built on purely illusory foundation. Children, who play life, discern its true law and relations more clearly than men, who fail to live worthily, but who think that they are wiser by experience, that is, by failure. I have read in a Hindoo book, that “there was a king’s son, who, being expelled in infancy from his native city, was brought up by a forester, and, growing up to maturity in that state, imagined himself to belong to the barbarous race with which be lived. One of his father’s ministers having discovered him, revealed to him what he was, and the misconception of his character was removed, and he knew himself to be a prince. So soul, from the circumstances in which it is placed, mistakes its own character, until thetruth is revealed to it by some holy teacher, and then it knows itself to be Brahme.” We think that that is which appears to be. If a man should give us an account of the realities he beheld, we should not recognize the place in his description. Look at a meeting-house, or a court-house, or a jail, or a shop. Or a dwelling-house, and say what that thing really is before a true gaze, and they would all go to pieces in your account of them. Men esteem truth remote, in the outskirts of the system, behind the farthest star, before Adam and after the last man. In eternity there is indeed something true and sublime. But all these times and places and occasions are now and here. God himself culminates in the present moment, and will never be more divine in the lapse of all ages. And we are enabled to apprehend at all what is sublime and noble only by the perpetual instilling and drenching of the reality that surrounds us. The universe constantly and obediently answers to our conceptions; whether we travel fast or slow, the track is laid for us. Let us spend our lives in conceiving then. The poet or the artist never yet had as fair and noble a design but some of his posterity at least could accomplish it.1. But what may not be so familiar will be the increasing number of women who are looking activelyfor advancement of for a new job in your offices. This woman may be equipped with professional skills and perhaps valuableexperience, She will not be content to be Executive Assistant to Mr. Seldom Seen of the Assistant Vice President’s Girl Friday, who is the only one who comes in on Saturday. She is the symbol of what I call the Second Wave of Feminism. She is the modern woman who is determined to be.Her forerunner was the radical feminist who interpreted her trapped position as a female as oppression by the master class of men. Men, she believed, had created a domestic, servile role for women in order that men could have the career and the opportunity to participate in making the great decisions of society. Thus the radical feminist held that women through history had been oppressed and dehumanized, mainly because man chose to exploit his wife and the mother of his children. Sometimes it was deliberate exploitation and sometimes it was the innocence of never looking beneath the pretensions of life. The radical feminists found strength in banding together. Coming to recognize each other for the first time, they could explore their own identities, realize their own power, and view the male and his system as the common enemy. The first phases of feminism in the last five years often took on this militant, class-warfare tone. Betty Friedan, Gloria Steinem, Germaine Greer, and many others hammered home their ideas with a persistence that aroused and intrigued many of the brightest and most able women in the country. Consciousness-raising groups allowed women to explore both their identities and their dreams—and the two were often found in direct conflict. What is the stereotyped role of American women? Marriage.A son. Two daughters. Breakfast. Ironing. Lunch. Bowling, maybe a garden club of for the very daring, non-credit courses in ceramics. Perhaps an occasional cocktail party. Dinner. Football or baseball on TV. Each day the same. Never any growth in expectations—unless it is growth because the husband has succeeded. The inevitable question:“Is thatall there is to life?”The rapid growth of many feminist organizations attests to the fact that these radical feminists had touched some vital nerves. The magazine “Ms.” was born in the year of the death of the magazine “Life.” But too often the consciousness-raising sessions became ends in themselves. Too often sexism reversed itself and man-hating was encouraged. Many had been with the male chauvinist. It is not difficult, therefore, to detect a trend toward moderation. Consciousness-raising increasingly is regarded as a means to independence and fulfillment, rather than a ceremony of fulfillment itself. Genuine independence can be realized through competence, through finding a career, through the use of education. Remember that for many decades the education of women was not supposed to be useful.1. What was the main idea of this passage?[A]. The Second Wave of Feminist.[B]. Women’s Independent Spirits.[C]. The Unity of Women.[D]. The Action of Union.2. What was the author’s attitude toward the radical?[A]. He supported it wholeheartedly.[B]. He opposed it strongly.[C]. He disapproved to some extent.[D]. He ignored it completely.3. What does the word “militant” mean?[A]. Aggressive.[B]. Ambitions.[C]. Progressive.[D]. Independent.4, What was the radical feminist’s view point about the male?[A]. Women were exploited by the male.[B]. Women were independent of the male.[C]. Women’s lives were deprived by the male.[D]. The male were their common enemy.答案ACAD阅读三New and bizarre crimes have come into being with the advent of computer technology. Organized crime to has been directly involved; the new technology offers it unlimited opportunities, such as data crimes, theft of services, property-related crimes, industrial sabotage, politicallyrelated sabotage, vandalism, crimes against the individual and financially related crimes…Theft of data, or data crime, has attracted the interest of organized criminal syndicates. This is usually the theft or copying of valuable computer grogram. An international market already exists for computerized data, and specialized fences are said to be playing a key role in this rapidly expanding criminal market. Buyers for stolen programs may range from a firm’s competitors to foreign nations.A competitor sabotages a company’s computer system to destroy or cripple the firm’s operational ability, thus neutralizing its competitive capability either in the private or the government sector. This computer sabotage may also be tied to an attempt by affluent investors to acquire thevictim firm. With the growing reliance by firms on computers for their recordkeeping and daily operations, sabotage of their computers can result in internal havoc, after which the group interested in acquiring the firm can easily buy it at a substantially lower price. Criminal groups could also resort to sabotage if the company is a competitor of a business owned or controlled by organized crime.Politically motivated sabotage is on the increase; political extremist groups have sprouted on every continent. Sophisticated computer technology arms these groups with awesome powers and opens technologically advanced nations to their attack. Several attempts have already been made to destroy computer facility at an air force base. A university computer facility involved in national defence work suffered more than $2 million in damages as a result of a bombing.Computer vulnerability has been amply documented. One congressional study concluded that neither government nor private computer systems are adequately protected against sabotage. Organized criminal syndicates have shown their willingness to work with politically motivated groups. Investigators have uncovered evidence of cooperation between criminal groups and foreign governments in narcotics. Criminal groups have taken attempts in assassinatingpolitical leaders…. Computers are used in hospital life-support system, in laboratories, and in major surgery. Criminals could easily turn these computers into tools of devastation. By sabotaging the computer of a life-support system, criminals could kill an individual as easily as they had used a gun. By manipulating a computer, they could guide awesome tools of terror against large urban centers. Cities and nations could become hostages. Homicide could take a now form. The computer may become the hit man of the twentieth century. The computer opens vast areas of crime to organized criminal groups, both national and international. It calls on them to pool their resources and increase their cooperative efforts, because many of these crimes are too complex for one group to handle, especially those requiting a vast network of fences. Although criminals have adapted to computer technology, law enforcement has not. Many still think in terms of traditional criminology.1. How many kinds of crimes are mentioned in the passage?[A]. 7. [B]. 8. [C]. 9. [D]. 102. What is the purpose of a competitor to sabotage a company’s computer?[A]. His purpose is to destroy or weaken the firm’s operational ability.[B]. His purpose is to weaken firm’s competitive capability and get it.[C]. His purpose is to buy the rival’s company at a relatively low price.[D]. His purpose is to steal important data.3. Which of the following can be labeled as a politically motivated sabotage of a computer system?[A]. Sabotage of a university computer.[B]. Sabotage of a hospital computer.[C]. Sabotage of computer at a secret training base.[D]. Sabotage of a factory computer.4. What does t he author mean by “Homicide could take a new form”?[A]. There is no need to use a gun in killing a person.[B]. Criminals can kill whoever they want by a computer.[C]. The computer can replace any weapons.[D]. The function of a computer is just like a gun.答案BBCB。
