Step I Warm up

1. Discuss in groups about where you need to make polite requests.

2. Present the opinions.

Step II Presentation

Before reading: New Words

1. Learn the new words through pictures.

2. Work in pairs to read the conversations in the pictures and guess which one is polite.

While reading:

1. Read and understand the language tips: Using suitable language.

2. Read the article quickly and underline the topic sentence for each paragraph.

3. Read the article in details and answer the questions:

•Is it enough to speak correctly?

•What are the features of polite language?

•Is it necessary to ask indirect questions to all the people around you?

•In the secon d picture, why does the man say “Sorry, I can’t help you.”? Can you change the questions to a more polite one?

•What is the writer’s purpose(目的)?

Step III Consolidation

After reading:

1. Finish filling tasks in 2c and 2d.

2. Extra practices.

3. Pair work.

Step IV Summary

In this period, we’ve learned some key words and known it is important to learn how to use the right language in different situations through reading an article. So, try to make polite requests when you need in some possible situations.
