Hawaii's native minority is demanding a greater degree of sovereignty over its own affairs. But much of the archipelago's political establishment, which includes the White Americans who dominated until the second world war and people of Japanese, Chinese and Filipino origins, is opposed to the idea. The islands were annexed by the US in 1898 and since then Hawaii's native peoples have fared worse than any of its other ethnic groups. They make up over 60 percent of the state's homeless, suffer higher levels of unemployment and their life span is five years less than the average Hawaiians. They are the only major US native group without some degree of autonomy. But a sovereignty advisory committee set up by Hawaii's first native governor, Joahn Waihee, has given the natives' cause a major boost by recommending that the Hawaiian natives decide by themselves whether to reestablish a sovereign Hawaiian nation. However, the Hawaiian natives are not united in their demands. Some just want greater autonomy within the state -- as enjoyed by many American Indian natives over matters such as education. This is a position supported by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA), a state agency set up in 1978 to represent the natives' interests and which has now become themoderate face of the native sovereignty movement. More ambitious is the Ka Lahui group, which declared itself a new nation in 1987 and wants full, official independence from the US.But if Hawaiian natives are given greater autonomy, it is far from clear how many people this will apply to. The state authorities only count as native those people with more than 50 percent Hawaiian blood.Native demands are not just based on political grievances, though. They also want their claim on 660,000 hectares of Hawaiian crown land to be accepted. It is on this issue that native groups are facing most opposition from the state authorities. In 1933, the state government paid the OHA US 136 million in back rent on the crown land and many officials say that by accepting this payment the agency has given up its claims to legally own the land. The OHA has vigorously disputed this.1. Hawaii's native minority refers to _________________.A. They fill out a wish list from the 50,000 titles on the company's Web site and receive the first few DVD's in the mail; when they mail each one back, the next one on the list is sent. The Netflix model has been exhaustively analyzed for its disruptive, new-economy(31)implications. What will it mean for video stores like Blockbuster, which has, in fact, started a similar service? What will it mean for movie studios and theaters? What does it show about "long tail" businesses -- ones that combine many niche markets, like those for Dutch movies or classic musicals, into a (32)single large audience? But one other major implication has (33)barely been mentioned: what this and similar Internet-based businesses mean for that stalwart of the old economy, the United States Postal Service.Every day, some two million Netflix envelopes come and go as first-class mail. They are joined by millions of other shipments from(34)online pharmacies, eBay vendors, and other businesses that did not exist before the Internet.The(35)demise of "snail mail" in the age of instant electronic communication has been predicted at least as often as the coming of the paperless office. Reading comprehensionSection APassage one(1)When I was a young girl living in Ireland, I was always pleased when it rained, because that meant I could go treasure hunting. What’s the connection between a wet day and a search for buried treasure? Well, it’s quite simple. Ireland, as some of you may already know, is the home of Leprechauns –little men who possess magic powers and, perhaps more interestingly, pots of gold.(2)Now, although Leprechauns are interesting characters, I have to admit that I was more intrigued by the stories of their treasure hoard. This, as all of Ireland knows, they hide at the end of the rainbow. Leprechauns can be fearsome folk but if you can discover the end of the rainbow, they have to unwillingly surrender theirgold to you. So whenever it rained, I would look up in the sky and follow the curve of the rainbow to see where it ended. I never did unearth any treasure, but I did spend many happy, showery days dreaming of what I could do with the fortune if I found it.(3)As I got older, and started working, rainy days came to be just another nuisance and my childhood dreams of finding treasure faded. But for some people the dream of striking it lucky never fades, and for a fortunate few, the dream even comes true! Such is the case of Mel Fisher. His dream of finding treasure also began in childhood, while reading the great literature classics “Treasure Island”and “Moby Dick”. However, unlike myself, he chased his dream and in the end managed to become one of the most famous professional treasure hunters of all time, and for good reason. In 1985, he fished up the priceless cargo of the sunken Spanish ship Atocha, which netted him an incredible $400 million dollars!(4)After the ship sank in 1622 off the coast of Florida, its murky waters became a treasure trove of precious stones, gold bars and silver coins known as “pieces of eight”. The aptly-named Fisher, who ran a commercial salvaging operation, had been trying to locate the underwater treasure for over 16 years when he finally hit the jackpot! His dreams had come true but finding and keeping the treasure wasn’t all plain sailing. After battling with hostile conditions at sea, Fisher then had to battle in the courts. In fact, the State of Florida took Fisher to court over ownership of the find and the Federal government soon followed suit. After more than 200 hearings, Fisher agreed to donate 20% of his yearly findings for public display, andso now there is a museum in Florida which displays hundreds of the objects which were salvaged from the Atocha.(5)This true story seems like a modern-day fairytale: a man pursues his dream through adversity and in the end, he triumphs over the difficulties - they all live happily ever after, right? Well, not exactly. Archaeologists object to the fact that with commercial salvaging operations like Fisher’s, the objects are sold and dispersed and UNESCO are worried about protecting our underwater heritage from what it describes as “pillaging”.(6)The counter-argument is that in professional, well-run operations such as Fisher’s, each piece is accurately and minutely recorded and that it is this information which is more important than the actual object, and that such operations help increase our wealth of archaeological knowledge. Indeed, as in Fisher’s case, they make history more accessible to people through museum donations and information on web sites.(7)The distinction of whether these treasure hunters are salvaging or pillaging our underwater heritage may not be clear, but what is clear is that treasure hunting is not just innocent child’s play anymore but profitable big business. I have learnt that the end of the rainbow is beyond my reach, but in consolation, with just a click of the mouse, I too can have a share in the riches that the Atocha has revealed. As Friedrich Nietzsche so wisely said: “Our treasure lies in the beehive of our knowledge.”41. In Para.4, the phrase “hit the jackpot”means ______according to the text.A. discovered the jackpot.B. found the treasureC. broke one of the objectsD. ran a salvaging operation42. It can be concluded from Paras. 5 and 6 that _________.A. people hold entirely different views on the issueB. UNESCO’s view is different from archaeologists’C. all salvaging operations should be prohibitedD. attention should be paid to the find’s educational value43. How did the author feel about the treasure from the Atocha (Para. 7)?A. She was unconcerned about where the treasure came fromB. She was sad that she was unable to discover and salvage treasure.C. She was angry that treasure hunters were pillaging heritage.D. She was glad that people can have a chance to see the treasure.Passage two(1)PAUL was dissatisfied with himself and with everything. The deepest of his love belonged to his mother. When he felt he had hurt her, or wounded his love for her, he could not bear it. Now it was spring, and there was battle between him and Miriam. This year he had a good deal against her. She was vaguely aware of it. The old feeling that she was to be a sacrifice to this love, which she had had when sheprayed, was mingled in all her emotions. She did not at the bottom believe she ever would have him. She did not believe in herself primarily: doubted whether she could ever be what he would demand of her. Certainly she never saw herself living happily through a lifetime with him. She saw tragedy, sorrow, and sacrifice ahead. And in sacrifice she was proud, in renunciation she was strong, for she did not trust herself to support everyday life. She was prepared for the big things and the deep things, like tragedy. It was the sufficiency of the small day-life she could not trust. (2)The Easter holidays began happily. Paul was his own frank self. Yet she felt it would go wrong. On the Sunday afternoon she stood at her bedroom window, looking across at the oak-trees of the wood, in whose branches a twilight was tangled, below the bright sky of the afternoon. Grey-green rosettes of honeysuckle leaves hung before the window, some already, she fancied, showing bud. It was spring, which she loved and dreaded.(3)Hearing the clack of the gate she stood in suspense. It was a bright grey day. Paul came into the yard with his bicycle, which glittered as he walked. Usually he rang his bell and laughed towards the house. To-day he walked with shut lips and cold, cruel bearing, that had something of a slouch and a sneer in it. She knew him well by now, and could tell from that keen-looking, aloof young body of his what was happening inside him. There was a cold correctness in the way he put his bicycle in its place, that made her heart sink.(4)She came downstairs nervously. She was wearing a new net blouse that she thought became her. It had a high collar with a tiny ruff, making her, she thought, look wonderfully a woman, and dignified. At twenty she was full-breasted and luxuriously formed. Her face was still like a soft rich mask, unchangeable. But her eyes, once lifted, were wonderful. She was afraid of him. He would notice her new blouse.(5)He, being in a hard, ironical mood, was entertaining the family to a description of a service given in the Primitive Methodist Chapel. He sat at the head of the table, his mobile face, with the eyes that could be so beautiful, shining with tenderness or dancing with laughter, now taking on one expression and then another, in imitation of various people he was mocking. His mockery always hurt her; it was too near the reality. He was too clever and cruel. She felt that when his eyes were like this, hard with mocking hate, he would spare neither himself nor anybody else. But Mrs. Leivers was wiping her eyes with laughter, and Mr. Leivers, just awake from his Sunday nap, was rubbing his head in amusement. The three brothers sat with ruffled, sleepy appearance in their shirt-sleeves, giving a guffaw from time to time. The whole family loved a "take-off" more than anything.44. It can be learned from the beginning that Mariam’s attitude toward love between her and Paul is ________.A. indifferentB. desperateC. pessimisticD. ambiguous45. The narration in Para. 3 tells us that Miriam had all the following feelings except _______.A.delightB. expectationC. uncertaintyD. forebearing46. Which of the following statements is correct about the family’s response to Paul’s mockery?A. Only the parents found it entertaining.B. Every member except Marriam was amusedC. The brothers found it hard to appreciate.D. Mariam also thought it was amusingPassage three(1)I’ve written this article and you’re reading it. So we are members of the same club. We’re both literate –we can read and write. And we both probably feel that literacy is essential to our lives. But millions of people all over the world are illiterate. Even in industrialised western countries, such as the UK and the USA, approximately 20% of the population have 'low literacy levels'. But what exactly does that mean? (2)My parents both left school at 14. They could read and write, but except for a quick look at the daily newspaper, reading and writing didn't play a big part in their lives. There were very few books in the house. My mother was amazed because the woman who lived next door always wrote a list of what she needed before she went to the supermarket. Why couldn't she remember? We laughed about that for weeks. Our family didn't write lists! And when I was only 14 years old my father gave me an important letter that he'd written to the bank and asked me to check it for grammar and spelling mistakes. And there were quite a lot. He never usually wrote letters or postcards or even Christmas cards. So when he had to write he wasn't comfortableor confident. Does that mean that my father had a 'low level of literacy'? I don't think so.(3)There are lots of different definitions of literacy. Some experts define it as having the reading and writing skills that you need to be independent in your everyday life. So, for example, if you can read instructions, write a cheque, fill in a form, –anything that you need to do in everyday life –then you are 'functionally literate'.(4)Other people say that you are illiterate if you think that you are illiterate. In other words, if you feel that you can't read or write as well as you would like to. (5)If you live in a society where most people are literate then you will feel ashamed or embarrassed and avoid situations in which you have to read or write. The father of a friend of mine finally admitted to his family that he couldn't read when he was 45 years old. He bought the newspaper every day and pretended to read it - and believe it or not, his family had no idea.(6)We often forget that writing is a recent invention. Many years ago, the word 'literate' meant being able to communicate well in speaking, in other words what we now call 'articulate'. Story telling was an important activity in the past and still is today in some societies. Reading was often a co-operative activity –someone would read aloud to a group, often from a religious text such as the Koran or the Bible.(7)Only a hundred years ago, in the United States, you were considered to be literate if you could sign your name to a piece of paper. It was an important skill. You were not allowed to vote if you couldn't sign the voting register, so literacy was connected with political rights, and many people were excluded from the democratic process.(8)Nowadays we see reading and writing as being connected, but that wasn't so in the past. Many people could read, but not write. Writing was a skilled profession. If you needed something written then you paid an expert to write it for you. (9)And of course, rich and important people have always employed people to write things for them. Important company bosses dictated letters to their secretaries or personal assistants. And now with new computer software you can dictate directly to your computer.(10)Being illiterate can have a big effect on people's lives. For example, a study in the UK showed that people who write and spell badly are seen as careless, immature and unreliable, and often unintelligent. So it is more difficult for them to find jobs, even when reading and writing are not necessary for the work.(11)World-wide statistics show that literacy problems are associated with poverty and a lack of political power. More women than men are illiterate. Illiterate people have worse health, bigger families and are more likely to go to prison. So literacy campaigns must be a good thing. But don't forget that an illiterate person, or someone with a low level of literacy, isn't necessarily stupid or ignorant –and may not be unhappy at all. Knowledge and wisdom isn't only found in writing.47. Why does the author give two examples in Para 2?A. To show that literacy is interpreted in different ways.B. To show that Father was more literate than Mother.C. T o indicate how important reading and writing are.D. T o compare the level of literacy between neighbours.48. According to the author, the following are some of the defining features of literacy EXCETT________.A. psyhchologicalB. functionalC. socialD. independent49. Which of the following statements about reading and writing is CORRECT?A. Reading and writing have always been regarded as equally difficult.B. People had to read and write well in order to be allowed to vote.C. Reading often requires more immediate interaction than writing.D. Reading and writing have always been viewed as being connected.50. What do the last two paragraphs mainly focus on ?A. Effects of illiteracy and employment problems.B. Effects of illiteracy and associated problems.C. Effects of illiteracy on one’s personality development.D. Effects of illiteracy on women’s career development.Section B. Short answer questions. (Answer each question with no more than ten words)Passage one.51. what does This in Para. 2 refer to?It refers to the treasure hoard of Leprechauns.52. Why did Fisher have to battle in the courts after he found the treasure (Para. 4)? Because he was sued over ownership of the treasure.Passage two.53.Why did Mariam wear a new net blouse on Sunday afternoon?Because she wanted to attract Paul’s attention.54. What is the meaning of the sentence “…he would spare neither himself nor anybody else”in Para. 5?Everyone, including himself, would become the targets of his mockery.Passage three.55. Explain the meaning of the last sentence of Para. 11 according to the context. Illiterate people may also have knowledge and wisdom.。

One of them was from my school days, when our ninth grade teacher, Miss Raber, would pick out words from the Reader’s Digest to test our vocabulary.Today, more than 45 years later, I always check out “It pays to Enrich Your Word Power” first when the Digest comes each month. I am impressed with that idea, word power. Reader’s Digest knows the power that words have to move people—to entertain, inform, and inspire. The Digest editors know that the big word isn’t always the best word. Take just one example, a Quotable Quo te form the February 1985 issue: ”Time is a playful thing. It slips quickly and drinks the day like a bowl of milk.”Nineteen words, only two of them more than one syllable, yet how much they convey! That’s usually how it is with Reader’s Digest. Small a nd simple can be profound. As chairman of a foundation to restore the Statue of Liberty, I’ve been making a lot of speeches lately. I try to keep them fairly short. I use small but vivid words: words like “hope”, “guts”, “faith”, “dreams”. Those are word s that move people and say so much about the spirit of America.Don’t get me wrong. I’m not against using big words, when it is right to do so, but I have also learned that a small word can work a small miracle—if it’s right word, in the right place, at the right time. It’s a “secret” that I hope never forget.16. The passage is mainly about .A. one of the many old memoriesB. using simple words to express profound ideasC. Reader’s Digest and school speechesD. how to make effective speeches17. It seems that Reader’s Digest is a magazine popular with .A. people of all agesB. teenagersC. school teachersD. elderly readers18. The author’s “secret” is .A. to avoid using big words at any timeB. to use words that have the power to move peopleC. to work a miracle by using a small wordD. to use small and simple words where possible20. Accoeding to the author, well-chosen words can give people .A. hope, courage and ideasB. confidence, determination and strengthC. pleasure, knowledge and encourageD. entertainment, information and powerQuestions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage:People with disabilities comprise a large part of the population. It is estimated that over 35 million Americans have physical, mental, or other disabilities. About half of these disabilities are “developmental”, i. e. , they occur prior to the individual’s twenty-second birthday, often form genetic conditions, and are severe enough to effect three or more areas of development, such as mobility, communication, employment, etc. Most other disabilities are considered “adventitious”, i.e. , accidental or caused by outside forces.Prior to the 20th century, only a small percentage of people with disabilities survived for long. Medical treatment for these disabilities was unavailable. Advancements in medicine and social services have created a climate in which people with disabilities can expert to have such basic needs as food, shelter, and medical treatment. Unfortunately, these basic are often not available. Civil liberties such as the right to vote, marry, get an education, and again employment have historically been denied on the basic of disability. In recent decades, the disability rights movement has been organized to flight against these infringements (侵害) of civil rights. Congress responded by passing major legislation recognizing people with disabilities as protected class under civil rights statutes.Still today, people with disabilities must fight to live their lives independently. It is estimated that more than half of qualified Americans with disabilities are unemployed, and a majority of those who do work are underemployed. About two-thirds live at or below the official poverty level.Significant barriers, especially in transportation and public awareness, prevent disabled people from taking part in society. For example, while no longer prohibited by law from marrying, a person with no access to transportation is effectively excluded from community and social activities which might lead to the development of long-term relationships. It will only be when public attitudes advance as far as laws are that disabled people will be fully able to take to their right place in society.16. ”developmental” disability .A. develops very slowly over timeB. is caused forcesC. occurs in youth and affects developmentD. is getting more and more severe17. Freddie Gray died in the hospital April 19th, a week after he was arrested. On Friday, State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby said there is probable cause to bring criminal charges against the officers involved in the arrest. She said the state medical examiner's office had ruled that Mr. Gray's death was a homicide. Also on Friday, that office said it had sent its report on the examination of Mr. Gray's body -- called an autopsy -- to the state's attorney.Ms. Mosby said Mr. Gray received a severe neck injury while being transported in a police vehicle after his arrest. She said he was not secured in the vehicle as he should have been. Earlier in the week, police admitted that Mr. Gray had not been secured in the van, an action that violates the department's rules.Ms. Mosby also said officers did not seek medical assistance although Mr. Gray said he needed it. And she said the knife found on Mr. Gray was legal for him to be carrying. The Baltimore Sun newspaper reports she told Mr. Gray's family that "no one is above the law." It also said Ms. Mosby believes Mr. Gray was "improperly arrested" because police had no legal reason to detain him.Charges against the officers include involuntary manslaughter, assault, misconduct and false imprisonment. Thedriver of the police vehicle faces second-degree murder and five other charges.Police gave their report on the case to the state's attorney's office on Thursday. That was one day earlier than the time limit police had set. The findings of the internal investigation have not been made public.Officials, citizen groups and others continue to work to restore calm to the city. For now, people are not permitted to be outside from 10 o'clock at night to five o'clock in the morning. Officials say this curfew will likely last a few more days. The streets have been mostly empty during the curfew, and the city has been mostly calm since the riots on Monday.Thousands of members of the Maryland National Guard, and police from Baltimore, the state of Maryland and other areas are patrolling the streets during the day and at night. The case of Freddie Gray in Baltimore has influenced demonstrations in other parts of the country, including Boston, Cincinnati, New York, Washington and Philadelphia. Activists demonstrating in support of labor and immigrant rights on May 1 have added tensions with police to their message.Calls for returning order to BaltimoreMany people have condemned the actions of those who rioted on Monday. But they say that in addition to returning order to the city, officials must deal with the reasons people are angry with police.Gerald Miller lives in Baltimore."Baltimore will recover. I think we will recover. Sure, sure, but it's gonna to take, you know, people getting involved, getting in the trenches not just in behind, you know a lectern, or when the camera's on, or whatever, you gotta get down here in it with thepeople. This is where the people are. This is where they're hurtin'."Cynthia Green also lives in the city."My heart is heavy for the, the people of Baltimore, for this community, and all the other communities. And I'm sad for the young people that got up caught up in all of this."Stephanie Rawlings-Blake is the mayor of Baltimore. She spoke to residents on Tuesday, after the rioting."We saw people coming together to reclaim our city, to clean our city and to help heal our city. I think this can be our defining moment and not the darkest days that we saw yesterday."People had gathered peacefully for days demanding to know why Mr. Gray died. The violence began after the funeral for Mr. Gray on Monday. Police say members of criminal groups joined the protestors. They say they did not expect that would happen.Officer Eric Kowalczyk is a spokesman for the Baltimore police. On Tuesday, he told reporters that police were expecting most of those who would gather after the funeral would be students."When we deployed our officers yesterday, we were deploying for a high school event. I don't think that there is anyone in the country that would expect us to deploy automatic weapons and armored vehicles to an event with 13, 14- and 15-year-olds."After the violence on Monday, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan declared a state of emergency. He moved his office and his top aides to the city. After the rioting, President Barack Obama said police cannot solve the problems in Baltimore by themselves."We can't just leave it to the police. I think there are police departments that have to do some soul searching. I think thereare some communities that have to do some soul searching. But I think we as a country have to do some soul searching."The president said rioting is not the same as protesting. And he said those who caused destruction must be punished.Later the president said it is important that the truth comes out about what happened to Mr. Gray. He also noted that the individuals who are charged should receive fair treatment. Mr. Obama said the Justice Department and new U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch are communicating with Baltimore officials to offer help if needed. Many of the protesters say they are angry about what they believe is continuing poor treatment of blacks by the police and what they say is the unwillingness of city officials to do anything about it. And they say there is little economic power in black neighborhoods. They say that has been a problem for many years.。

foothold in the list of hobbies that children tend to cite. Most of the reading that kids do today, comes in the form of compulsory books that they need to read for school and maybe that is the reason they find reading to be an insurmountable and boring task.If you want to inculcate the love for languages and literary masterpieces in your students and want them to devour books everyone should read, then a good way of going about the same would be to get them to start working on creative book report ideas. While working on creative ideas for book reports, your students will have to understand varying attention spans that children of various age groups posses but also because of the amount of work that kids can put into the report. While a middle school student wiIl be comfortable handling a likewise.Obviously, each ingredient should be cut in a way that when assembled together,it looks like a sandwich. Now,give each of your students one of these book sandwiches to create their book report. It can start with the name of the book and the author’s name on the top slice of the sandwich. The second ingredient can have the summary of the book on it.Each subsequent ingredient can have a audience.Every time he/she picks out an object from the bag to report the book he/she has read, there has to be a valid connection between the book and the object, which the student can first ask theaudience to guess and then go ahead and explain it.This idea is spin—off on the normal show and tells and allows for an interactive book report session.E.This is one of the creative ideas for book reports in which.as the teacher, you will have to divideyour class into groups and give them one book each. The students can then read the book and get together and write a play and act it out for the class. To give a deeper insight into the book, one of the students can play the role of the author and as a group, the students can try and recreate the thought Drocess of the author. The student playing the role of the author can then interrupt the play at lmportant iunctllres and talk about the reasons for these twists in the play and how he/she came up with these plot lines.F.As a voung adult, your student’s fascination may go beyond the immediate concerns of the book.He/she may want to understand the circumstances in which the book was written, the times then, the events happening in the world and get the author’s perspective about the book.Encourage your students to mink on those lines.Divide the class into pairs and give each pair one book to read.Let them then do the roles of the author and a journalist. You can have an interview session in front of the class.enabling them to dissect the book and get a peek into the author’s world.G.In a technology—obsessed world,it maybe a very tiny minority of your class that does not get excited with the Drospect of shooting a film. One of the best creative book report ideas for middle school, you will need to divide the class into groups and give them at least two months to adapt the book that thev have been assigned, into a film. The movie should have a well—adapted screenplay, and allother prerequisites, like a lightingengineer, sound section. Each passage is followed by some questions orunfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C andD . You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on AnswerSheet 2 with a single line through the centre.Passage OneQuestions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage. It‘s very interesting to note where the debate about diversity(多样化)is taking place. It is taking place primarily in political circles. Here at the College Fund,we have a lot of contact with top corporate(公司的) leaders;none of them is talking about getting rid of those instruments that produce diversity. In fact, they say that if their companies are to compete in the global village and in the global market place, diversity. In fact, they say that if their companies are to compete in the global village and in the global market place, diversity is an imperative. They also say that the need for talented, skilledAmericans means we have to expand the pool of potential employees. And in looking at where birth rates are growing andat where the population is shifting, corporate America understands that expanding the pool means promotingpolicies that help provide skills to more minorities, more women and more immigrants.Corporate leaders know that if that does not occur in our society, they will not have the engineers, the scientists, the lawyers,or the business managers they will need.Likewise,I don‘t hear people in the academy saying.“Let’s go backward.Let‘s go back to the good old days, when we had a meritocracy(不拘一格选人才)” (which was never true-we never had a meritocracy, although we’ve come closer to it in the last 30 years.) I recently visited a great little college in New York where the campus has doubled its minority population in the last six years.I talked with an African American who has been a professor there for a long time, and she remembers that when she first joined the community, there were fewer than a handful of minorities on campus. Now,all of us feel the university is betterbecause corporate board rooms or on college campuses.Choose correct answers to the question:46.The w ord“imperative”(Line5,Para.1) most probably refers to something _____A.SuperficialB.remarkableC.debatableD.essential47.Which of the following groups of people still differ in their views on diversity?A.Minorities.B.Politicians.C.Professors.D.Managers.48.High corporate leaders seem to be in favor of promoting diversity so as to ______A.lower the rate of unemploymentB.win equal political rights for minoritiesC.be competitive in the world marketD.satisfy the demands of a growing population49.It can be inferred from the passage that _____A.meritocracy can never be realized without diversityB.American political circles will not accept diversityC.it is unlikely that diversity will occur in the U.S. MediaD.minorities can only enter the fields were no debate is heard about diversity50.According to the passage diversity can be achieved in American society by ____A.expanding the pool of potential employeesB.promoting policies that provide skills to employeesC.training more engineers, scientists lawyers and business managersD.providing education for all regardless of race or sexPassage TwoQuestions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage. Many private institutions of higher education around the country are in danger. Not all will be saved, andperhaps not all deserve to be saved. There are low-quality schools just as there are low-quality business. We have no obligation to save them simply because they exist. But many thriving institutions that deserve to continue arethreatened. They are doing a fine job educationally, but they are caught in a financial squeeze, with no way to reduce rising costs or increase revenuessignificantly.Raising tuition doesn‘t bring in more revenue, for each time tuition goes up,the enrollment goes down,or the amount that must be given away in student aid goes up.Schools are bad businesses, whether public or private, not usually because of mismanagement but because of the nature of the enterprise. They lose money on every customer, and they can go bankrupt either from too few students or too many students.Even a very good college is a very bad business. It is such colleges, thriving but threatened,I worry about.Low enrollment is not their chief problem.Even with full enrollments, they may go under.Efforts to save them, and preferably to keep them private, are a national necessity. There is no basis for arguing that private schools are inherently (固有地)better than public schools.Examples to the contrary abound.Anyone can name state universities and colleges that rank as the finest in the nation and the world. It is now inevitable that public institutions will be dominant, and therefore diversity is a national necessity.Diversity in the way we support schools tends to give us a healthy diversity in the forms of education. In an imperfect society such as ours, uniformity of education throughout the nation could be dangerous. In an imperfect society, diversity is a positive good. Enthusiastic supporters of public higher education know the importance of sustaining private higher education.Choose correct answers to the question:51.According to the author‘s opinion, schools are bad businesses because of _______.A.mismanagementB.too few studentsC.financial squeezeD.their characteristics52.The author used the phrase “go under” in Para. 3 to mean “_______”。

为了让大家能更好的备考,无忧考网特别整理了2017年12月英语四级阅读模拟试题:金币的保值性,详情如下:Nearly everyone agrees that money doesn't buy as much as it used to, no matter where you want to spend it. This is certainly true of the paper money that passes so quickly through one's hands. Inflation(通货膨胀) eats away at its buying power just as the steady appetite of waves chews at sand cliffs. But what about coins that seem to do very little except wear out your purses and pockets? Unlike notes, metal money becomes more valuable the longer it is held, especially if it is put away where it won't get scratched or worn. Why is this? One reason is that coins, being more durable, fall more readily into a category for collectors. Naturally, the rarer gold pieces must become more valuable as the price of this metal goes up.But, curiously, one of the rarest coins in the world is notmade of gold, but of the relatively cheaper silver. In 1804, the United States mint(造币厂) struck 19,570 silver dollars. That is what its records show. Today only six of this original number remain and these are unlikely ever to reach the auction market. So what happened to some 19,564 large silver coins, not the easiest sort of things to lose? One of the more romantic theories is that they were part of the payment to Napoleon for the American territory then known as Louisiana. But they never reached France. Somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico, the ship transporting them was sunk, either by a storm or by pirates (# &). The probable answer to the mystery is that they were melted down—since the silver value was greater than the actual value of the coin. What really happened to the rest will probably always remain a mystery. What is known is that whoever can come up with one will find himself instantly rich.26. It can be inferred from passage that_______.A. money buys as much as it did beforeB. money does not buy as much as it did beforeC. paper money buys more than metal moneyD. metal money buys more than paper money27.
