AWhile income worry is a rather common problem of the aged, loneliness is another problem that aged parents may face. Of all the reasons that explain their loneliness, a large geographical distance between parents and their children is the major one. This phenomenon is commonly known as “Empty Nest Syndrome”(空巢综合症).In order to seek better chances outside their countries, many young people have gone abroad, leaving their parents behind with no clear idea of when they will return home. Their parents spend countless lonely days and nights, taking care of themselves, in the hope that someday their children will come back to stay with them. The fact that most of these young people have gone to Europeanized or Americanized societies makes it unlikely that they will hold as tightly to the value of duty as they would have if they had not left their countries. Whatever the case, it has been noted that the values they hold do not necessarily match what they actually do. This geographical and cultural distance also prevents the grown-up children from providing response in time for their aged parents living by themselves. The situation in which grown-up children live far away from their aged parents has been described as “distant parent phenomenon”, which is common both in developed countries and in developing countries. Our society has not yet been well prepared for “Empty Nest Syndrome”.21. According to the passage, the loneliness of aged parents is mainly caused by _______.A. their earlier experience of feeling lonelyB. the unfavorable living conditions in their native countriesC. the common worry about their incomeD. the geographical distance between parents and children22. If young people go abroad, _________.A. they do not hold to the value of duty at allB. they can give some help to their parents back homeC. they cannot do what they should for their parentsD. they believe what they actually do is right23. From the last paragraph, we can infer that ________.A. the situations in the developed and developing countries are differentB. “Empty Nest Syndrome” has arrived unexpectedly in our societyC. children will become independent as soon as they go abroadD. the aged parents are not fully prepared for “Empty Nest Syndrome”BWhen people were building houses, they used to consider not only the climate of the areas but also the building materials and the fashions for their houses. However, since electricity became more and more expensive, people began to pay much more attention to the energy they could get for their houses and the new ways they could find to protect their houses from both cold and heat. Now, houses of an old yet new type have been widely built. In some parts of the world, people share their houses with their livestock (家畜).During cold weather, they gather their cows, goats, or other animals and keep them on the first floor of their houses. The reasons are that the animals can be protected from the cold and that they can help to heat the houses as well. The body heat given off by the animals rises to the second floor of the houses, where people live. By sharing their houses with their livestock, people gain a source ofheat.People who live in or near cities do not usually keep livestock. However, home builders use the fact that heat rises. This natural law can be used in building houses in these areas. Instead of keeping livestock on the first floor, builders fill it with large rocks. As they are open to the sun’s rays during cold weather, these rocks take in heat. They also give off the heat, and, of course, the warm air rises into the living areas of the houses. So these houses are energy-saving.House-building becomes a great challenge to building designers and energy engineers. They try to meet this challenge by learning from old traditions and by using modern technology. And someday in the future, people will be able to live in more energy-saving houses.24. What did people begin to consider as electricity was no longer cheap?A.The climate of their areas.B.The energy for their houses.C.The fashions for their houses.D.The building materials for their houses.25. People in some areas gain a source of heat by ________.A.keeping their livestock downstairsB.protecting their livestock from the coldC.sharing their houses only with their cowsD.living on the second floor with their livestock26. The underlined words “natural law” in the third paragraph refer to the fact that ________.A.heat raises the temperature in the housesB.heat goes in the upward directionC.heat goes up if temperature is raisedD.heat increases the temperature of rocks27. From the passage, we can conclude that ________.A.people will no longer consider building materials in the futureB.almost all people will move into the houses heated by large rocksC.energy-saving buildings will become more popular in the futureD.energy engineers will devote themselves only to modern technologyCPlanning a visit to the UK? Here we help with ways to cut your costs.A VOID BIG EVENTS Big sporting events, concerts and exhibitions can increase the cost of accommodation and make it harder to find a room. A standard double room at the Thistle Brighton on the final Friday of the Brighton Comedy Festival (19 Oct.) cost £169.15 at . A week later, the same room cost £118.15.If you can be flexible and want to know dates to avoid—or you’re looking for a big event to pass your time—check out sites such as , which allow you to search for events in the UK by city, date and category.STAY AW AY FROM THE STA TION If traveling to your destination by train, you may want to find a good base close to the station, but you could end up paying more for the sake of convenience at the start of your holiday.Don’t be too choosy about th e part of town you stay in. Booking two months in advance, the cheapest room at Travelodge’s Central Euston hotel in London for Saturday 22 September was £95.95. A room just a tube journey away at its Covent Garden hotel was £75.75. And at Farringdon, a double room cost just £62.95.LOOK AFTER YOURSELF Really central hotels in cities such as London, Edinburgh and Cardiff can cost a fortune, especially at weekends and during big events. As an alternative consider checking into a self-catering flat with its own kitchen. Often these flats are hidden away on the top floors of city center buildings. A great example is the historic O’Neill Flat on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, available for £420 for five days in late September, with rooms for four adults.GET ON A BIKE London’s ‘Boris bikes’ have attracted the most attention, but other cities also have similar programmers that let you rent a bicycle and explore at your own pace, saving you on public transportor car parking costs.Among the smaller cities with their own programmers are Newcastle (casual members pay around £1.50 for two hours) and Cardiff (free for up to 30 minutes, or £5 per day).28. The Brighton Comedy Festival is mentioned mainly to show big events may ________.A. help travelers pass timeB. attract lots of travelers to the UKC. allow travelers to make flexible plansD. cause travelers to pay more for accommodation29. The passage shows that the O’Neill Flat ________.A. lies on the ground floorB. is located in central LondonC. provides cooking facilities for touristsD. costs over £100 on average per day in late September30. Cardiff’s program allows a free bike for a maximum period of ________.A. half an hourB. one hourC. one hour and a halfD. two hours31. The main purpose of the passage is _______.A. to tell visitors how to book in advanceB. to supply visitors with hotel informationC. to show visitors the importance of self-helpD. to offer visitors some money-saving tipsDArt is considered by many people to be no more than a decorative means of giving pleasure. This is not always the case, however, at times, art may be seen to have a purely functional side as well. Such could be said of the sandpaintings of the Navaho Indians of the American Southwest; these have a medicinal as well as an artistic purpose.According to Navaho traditions, one who suffers from either a mental or a physical illness has in some way disturbed or get in touch with the supernatural--perhaps a certain animal, a ghost, or the dead. To break away f rom this, the ill person or one of his relatives will employ a medical man called a “singer” to perform a curing ceremony which will attract a powerful supernatural being. During the ceremony, which may last from 2 to 9 days, the “singer” will produce a sa ndpainting on the floor. On the last day of the ceremony, the patient will sit on this sandpainting and the “singer” will rub the sick or injured parts of the patient’s body with sand from a specific figure in the sandpainting. In this way the patient absorbs the power of that particular supernatural being and becomes strong. After the ceremony, the sandpainting is destroyed so its power won’t harm anyone. The art of sandpainting is handed down from old “singers”. The materials used are easily found where the Navaho settle: brown, red, yellow, and white sandstone, which is ground(研磨) much as corn is made into flour. The “singer” holds a small amount of this sand in his hand and lets it flow between his fingers onto a clean, flat surface on the floor, with a steady hand and great patience. He is thus able to create designs of stylized people, snakes and other creatures that have power in the Navaho belief system. The traditional Navaho doesn’t allow copying sandpaintings, since he believes the supernatural po wers that taught him the craft have forbidden this; however, such reproductions can in fact be purchased today in tourist shops in Arizona and New Mexico. These are done by either Navaho Indians or by other people who wish to preserve this craft.32. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A. The Navaho IndianB. The Ancient “Singer”C. Functions of ArtD. The Navaho Sandpaintings33. How did the “singer” treat the patient according to the passage?A. By passing his supernatural power on to the patient.B. By applying a magic substance to the patient’s body.C. By rubbing the patient’s sick parts with sand from a sandpainting figure.D. By destroying the sandpainting figure.34. The traditional Navaho does not allow copying of sandpaintings because _______.A. anything copied has no effectB. the craft only belongs to the supernaturalC. it’s against Navaho belief systemD. the copying may do harm to other Navahos35. That the reproductions of sandpaintings are now commercially available shows ________.A. people have realized the artistic value of sandpaintingsB. patients have benefited from the powerful effect of sandpaintingsC. more people have come to believe in supernatural powerD. modern technology has helped the production of sandpaintings第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

The collection of happiness actions broadly categorized (把……归类) as “honor” help you create this life of good feelings. Here’s an example to show how honorable actions create happiness.Say a store clerk fails to charge us foran item. If we keep silent, and profit from the clerk’s mistake,we would drive home with a sense of sneaky (暗中的) excitement. Later we might tell our family or friends about our good fortune. On the other hand,if we tell the clerk about the uncharged item, the clerk would be grateful and thank us for our honesty. We would leave the store with a quiet sense of honor that we might never share with another soul. Then, what is it to do with our sense of happiness? In the first case, where we don’t tell the clerk,a couple of things would happen. Deep down inside we would know ourselves as a type of thief. In the process,we would lose some peace of mind and self?respect. We would also demonstrate that we cannot be trusted, since we advertise our dishonor by telling ourfamily and friends. We damage our own reputations by telling others. In contrast,bringing_the_error_to_the__clerk’s__attention causes different things to happen. Immediately the clerk knows us to be honorable. Upon leaving the store,we feel honorable and our self?respect is increased. Whenever we take honorable actions we gain the deep internal rewards of goodness and a sense of nobility. There is a beautiful positive cycle that is created by living a life of honorable actions. Honorable thoughts lead to honorable actions. Honorable actions lead us to a happier existence. And it’s easy to think and act honorably again when we’re happy. While the positive cycle can be difficult to start, once it’s started,it’s easy to continue. Keeping on doing good deeds brings us peace of mind, which is important for our happiness.to the passage, the positive action inthe example contributes to our________.?respect rewardsability relationshipauthor thinks that keeping silent about the uncharged item is equal to________.underlined phrase “bringing the error to the clerk’s attention” means________.the truth to the clerkadvice to the clerkthe clerk to be more attentivethe clerk of the charged itemswill we feel if we let the clerk know the mistake?’ll be very excited.’ll feel unfortunate.’ll have a sense of honor.’ll feel sorry for the clerk.of the following can be the best title of this passage?to Live Truthfullyof Peacefulnessof Gaining Self?respectthrough Honorable ActionsB(2013·济宁高考模拟)A euphemism (from the Greek words eu—well and pheme—speak) is a word or ex pression that is used when people want to find a polite or less direct way of talking about difficult or embarrassing topics like death or the bodily functions. Most people, for example, would find it very difficult to say in plain language that they have arranged for their sick old dog to be killed. They would soften the pain by saying:We had Ruby put down or We had Ruby put to sleep. Many people prefer to call someone plain than ugly,or cuddly rather than fat.Euphemisms are an important part ofevery language, but it seems that English has an ever?growing number of them. The non?native speaker not only has to make sense of the euphemisms he hears,he also has to learn which euphemisms are appropriate in any particular situation. He might be aware that his American friend needs to use the toilet when she asks where the bathroom (or restroom,or comfort station) is,but he is less likely to guess that his English friend has the same need when he says he has to see a man about a dog. He might have learned, for example, that in the family way is a euphemism for pregnant. If,however,he says to his boss,“Congratulations! I hear your wife is in the family way,” he would be using an ex pression that is too familiar for the circumstances.Schools are full of euphemisms. At Frankfurt International School, for example, the special lessons given tostudents who are having difficulties in their school subjects are called Study Center (in the middle school) and Academic Workshop (in the high school).Teachers rightly do not want to upset students or parents by being too frank or straightforward, and usually choose a softer word or ex pression to convey the same message.to the passage, people use euphemisms in order to________.themselves understoodembarrassmentsound straightforwardattentionperson who is described as plain and cuddly is in fact________.and handsome and slimbut tall and fatan English lady says she has to see a man about a dog,she might want to________.her old dog killed an ugly friendto the toilet a pregnant womanmain purpose of Paragraph 2 is to________.that euphemisms are an important part of every languagereaders that English has an ever?growing number of euphemismsnon?native speakers use euphemisms as often as possibleEnglish learners to be careful about the meaning and use of euphemismsFrankfurt International School, the students who receive lessons in Study Center________.poor grades in the subjects well in schoolhard at their lessons to learn more答案及解析一.单项填空1.解析:考查情景交际。

FoodCMedia Selection for AdvertisementsAfter determining the target audience for a product or service, advertising agencies must select the appropriate media for the advertisement. We discuss here the major types of media used in advertising. We focus our attention on seven types of advertising: television, newspapers, radio, magazines, out-of-home. Internet, and direct mail.TelevisionTelevision is an attractive medium for advertising because it delivers mass audiences to advertisers. When you consider that nearly three out of four Americans have seen the game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? you can understand the power of television to communicate with a large audience. When advertisers create a brand, for example, they want to impress consumers with the brand and its image. Television provides an ideal vehicle for this type of communication. But television is an expensive medium, and not all advertisers can afford to use it.Television's influence on advertising is fourfold. First, narrowcasting means that television channels are seen by an increasingly narrow segment of the audience. The Golf Channel, for instance.is watched by people who play golf. Home and Garden Television is seen by those interested in household improvement projects. Thus, audiences are smaller and more homogeneous(具有共同特点的) than they have been in the past. Second, there is an increase in the number of television channels available to viewers, and thus, advertisers. This has also resulted in an increase in the sheer number of advertisements to which audiences are exposed. Third, digital recording devices allow audience members more control over which commercials they watch. Fourth, control over programming is being passed from the networks to local cable operators and satellite programmers.Newspaper? After television, the medium attracting the next largest annual ad revenue is newspapers. The New York Times, which reaches a national audience, accounts for $1 billion in ad revenue annually, ii m increased its national circulation (发行量) by 40% and is now available for home delivery in ion ciues. Locally, newspapers are the largest advertising medium.Newspapers are a less expensive advertising medium than television and provide a way for advertisers to communicate a longer. more detailed message to their audience than they can through 48 hours, meaning newspapers are also a quick way of getting the massage out.Newspapers are ofen the most important form of news for a local community, and they develop a high degree of loyalty from local reader.RadioAdvertising on radio continues to grow Radio is often used in conjunction with outdoor bill-boards (广告牌) and ihe Internet to reach even more customers than television. Advertisers are likely to use radio because it is a less expensive medium than television, which means advertisers can afford to repeal their ads often. Internet companies are also turning 10 radio advertising. Radio provides a way for advertisers to communicate with audience members at all times of the day.Consumers listen to radio on their way to school or work, at work, on the way home, and in the evening hours. Two major changes—satellite and Internet radio—will force radio advertisers to adapt their methods. Both of these radio forms allow listeners to tune in stations that are more distant than the local stations they could receive in the past. As a result, radio will increasingly attract target audiences who live many miles apart.MagazinesNewsweeklies, women’s titles, and business magazines have all seen increases in advertising because they attract the high-end market, magazines are popular with advertisers because of the narrow market that they deliver. A broadcast medium such as network television attracts all types of audience members, but magazine audiences are more homogeneous, if you read sportsillustrated, for example, you h ave much in common with the magazine’s other readers. Advertisers see magazines as an efficient way of reaching target audience members.Advertiser using the print media-magazines and newspapers-will need to adapt to two main changes. First, the internet will bring larger audiences to local newspapers, these second. Advertisers will have to understand how to use an increasing number of magazines for their target audiences. Although some magazines will maintain national audiences, a large number of magazines will entertain narrower audiences.Out-of-home advertisingOut-of-home advertising. Also called place-based advertising, has become an increasingly effective way of reaching consumers, who are more active than ever before. Many consumers today do not sit at home and watch television. Using billboards, newsstands, and bus shelters for advertising is an effective way of reaching these on-the-go consumers. More consumers travel longer distances to and from work, which also makes out-of-home advertising effective, technology has changed the nature of the billboard business, making it a more effective medium than in the past.Using digital printing, billboard companies can print a billboard in 2 hours, compared with 6 days previously. This allows advertisers more variety in the types of messages they create because they. Can change their messages more quickly.InternetAs consumers become more comfortable with online shopping, advertisers will seek to reach this market As consumers get more of their news and information from the Internet, the ability of television and radio to get the word out to consumers will decrease. The challenge to Internet advertisers Is to create ads that audience members remember.Internet advertising will play a more prominent role in organizations' advertising in the near ftuture. Internet audiences tend to be quite homogeneous, but small. Advertisers will have to adjust their methods to reach these audiences and will have to adapt their persuasive strategies to the online medium as well.Direct mailA final advertising medium is direct mail, which uses mailings to consumers to communicate a client's message Direct mail includes newsletters. postcards and special promotions. Direct mail is an effective way to build relationships with consumers. For many businesses.direct mail is the most effective from of advertising.28. With the increase in the number of TV channels_________.A. the cost of TV advertising has decreasedB. the nuiflber of TV viewers has increasedC. advertisers' interest in other media has decreasedD. the number of TV ads people can see has increasedpared with television, newspapers as an advertising medium_________________.A. earn a larger annual ad revenueB. convey more detailed messagesC. use more production techniquesD. get messages out more effectively30.Advertising on radio continues to grow because ___________.A. more local radio stations have been set upB. modern technology makes it more entertainingC. it provides easy access to consumersD. it has been revolutionized by Internet radio.31.Magazines are seen by advertisers as an efficient way to___________.A. reach target audiencesB. modern technology makes it more entertainingC. appeal to educated people.D. convey all kinds of messagesDUniversities Branch OutAs never before in their long history, universities have become instruments of national competition as well as instruments of peace. They are the place of the scientific discoveries that move economies forward, and the primary means of educating the talent required to obtain and maintain competitive advantage. But at the same time, the opening of national borders to the flow of goods, services, information and especially people has made universities a powerful force for global integration, mutual understanding and geopolitical stability. In response to the same forces that have driven the world economy, universities have become more self-consciously global: seeking students from around the world who represent the entire range of cultures and values, sending their own students abroad to prepare them for global careers, offering courses of study that address the challenges of an interconnected world and collaborative (合作的) research programs to advance science for the benefit of all humanity.Of the forces shaping higher education none is more sweeping than the movement across borders.Over the past three decades the number of students leaving home each year to study abroad has grown at an annual rate of 3.9 percent, from 800 000 in 1975 to 2.5 million in 2004. Most travel from one developed nation to another, but the flow from developing to developed countries is growing rapidly. The reverse flow, from developed to developing countries, is on the rise, too.Today foreign students earn 30 percent of the doctoral degrees awarded in the United States and 38 percent of those in the United Kingdom. And the number crossing borders for undergraduate study is growing as well, to 8 percent of the undergraduates at America's best institutions and 10 percent of all undergraduates in the UK. In the United States, 20 percent of the newly hired professors in science and engineering are foreign-born, and in China many newly hired faculty members at the top research universities received their graduate education abroad.Universities are also encouraging students to spend some of their undergraduate years in another country. In Europe, more than 140 000 students participate in the Erasmus program each year, taking courses for credit in one of 2 200 participating institutions across the continent. And in the United States, institutions are helping place students in summer internships (实习) abroad to prepare them for global careers. Yale and Harvard have led the way, offering every undergraduate at least one international study or internship opportunity—and providing the financial resources to make it possible.Globalization is also reshaping the way research is done. One new trend involves sourcing portions of a research program to another country. Yale professor and Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator Tian Xu directs a research centre focused on the genetics of human disease atShanghai's Fudan University, in collaboration with faculty colleagues from both schools. The Shanghai centre has 95 employees and graduate students working in a 4 300-square-meter laboratory facility. Yale faculty, postdoctors and graduate students visit regularly and attend videoconference seminars with scientists from both campuses. The arrangement benefits both countries; Xu's Yale lab is more productive, thanks to the lower costs of conducting research in China, and Chinese graduate students, postdoctors and faculty get on-the-job training from a world-class scientist and his US team.As a result of its strength in science, the United States has consistently led the world in the commercialization of major new technologies, from the mainframe computer and the integrated circuit of the 1960s to the Internet infrastructure(基础设施) and applications software of the 1990s. The link between university-based science and industrial application is often indirect but sometimes highly visible: Silicon Valley was intentionally created by Stanford University, and Route 128 outside Boston has long housed companies spun off from MIT and Harvard. Around the world, governments have encouraged copying of this model, perhaps most successfully in Cambridge, England, where Microsoft and scores of other leading software and biotechnology companies have set up shop around the university. For all its success, the United States remains deeply hesitant about sustaining the research-university model. Most politicians recognize the link between investment in science and national economic strength, but support for research funding has been unsteady. The budget of the National Institutes of Health doubled between 1998 and 2003, but has risen more slowly than inflation since then. Support for the physical sciences and engineering barely kept pace with inflation during that same period. The attempt to make up lost ground is welcome, but the nation would be better served by steady, predictable increases in science funding at the rate of long-term GDP growth, which is on the order of inflation plus 3 percent per year.American politicians have great difficulty recognizing that admitting more foreign students can greatly promote the national interest by increasing international understanding. Adjusted for inflation, public funding for international exchanges and foreign-language study is well below the levels of 40 years ago. In the wake of September 11, changes in the visa process caused a dramatic decline in the number of foreign students seeking admission to US universities, and a corresponding surge in enrollments in Australia, Singapore and the UK. Objections from American university and business leaders led to improvements in the process and a reversal of the decline, but the United States is still seen by many as unwelcoming to international students. Most Americans recognize that universities contribute to the nation's well-being through their scientific research, but many fear that foreign students threaten American competitiveness by taking their knowledge and skills back home. They fail to grasp that welcoming foreign students to the United States has two important positive effects: first, the very best of them stay in the States and—like immigrants throughout history—strengthen the nation; and second, foreign students who study in the United States become ambassadors for many of its most cherished (珍视) values when they return home. Or at least they understand them better. In America as elsewhere, few instruments of foreign policy are as effective in promoting peace and stability as welcoming international university students.32. In the United States, how many of the newly hired professors in science and engineering are foreign-born?A. 10%.B. 20%.C. 30%.D. 38%.33. There’s a whole lot of soot(烟灰)that gets stuck on the inside. That stuff has to get cleaned, or you could have a serious fire risk. While nowadays we have easier ways of doing this dirty job, in the way back days somebody used to climb up the chimney and clean all that soot. And the thing is, not just anybody could do it.You had to be really small to fit up in the chimney, so they used to give the task to kids –some as young as four or five years old. They worked for their boss known as a master-sweep. They were often covered in soot, and were very likely to get burned. They often developed what became known as soot wart, a form of cancer. Are your unfairness bells ringing? William Blake’s certainly were. The physical dangers and widespread unfairness of the chimney-sweeping job really stuck in his throat, so much so that he wrote not one, but two poems called ―The Chimney Sweeper‖.The first poem (the one we’re discussing here) was publis hed in 1789 in a book called Songs of Innocence. These little poems took children and the joys of childhood innocence as their subject. As you’ve probably guessed by now, many of the poems in Songs of Innocence, like ―The Chimney Sweeper‖, are about the wa ys in which childhood innocence is destroyed by unkind old adults. For Blake, innocence is, in many ways, a total joke. It doesn’t exist, because it’s always taken away by the realistic world – chimney-sweeping, death, poverty, etc. What does a five-year-old chimney sweeper in 18th-century England have to do with you? More than you might think. It is reported that 150 million kids are in child labor in developing countries. Many of them work long hours and face dangerous health risks. Like Blake’s chimney sweeper, these kids are not even given a chance at innocence because experience keeps getting in the way.24. Why did Blake write two poems called ―The Chimney Sweeper‖?A. He was very interested in the job.B. He had much experience in the job.C. He considered the job very important.D. He felt deeply sorry for the kid workers.25 Which of the following can best describe the chimney-sweeping job?A. E asy and interesting.B. Dirty and dangerous.C. Pleasant and well-paidD. Challenging and creative.26. How did Blake look at the realistic world?A. ThankfullyB. RegretfullyC. DoubtfullyD. Negatively27. In the last paragraph, the writer explains _____________.A. the realistic meaning of ―The Chimney Sweeper‖B. the great infl uence of Blake’s Songs of InnocenceC. why child labor still exists in developing countriesD. why chimney-sweeping becomes unnecessary todayCWhenever we turn on the TV or radio, read the newspapers, surf the Internet, we’ll be surrounded by the wo rd ―diet‖ everywhere. We have so easily been attracted by the promise of diet products that we have stopped thinking about what diet products are doing to us. We are paying for products that harm us psychologically (心理上地)and physically. It’s obvious that d iet products weaken us psychologically. They allow us to jump over the thinking stage that our weight problems lie not in actually losing the weight, but in controlling the consumption of fat. All we have to do is to swallow or recognize the word ―diet‖ in food labels. What’s more, diet products have greater psychological effects. Every time we have a zero-calorie drink, we are telling ourselves that we don’t have to work to get results. Diet products make people believe that gain comes without pain, and that life can be without resistance and straggle. As a matter of fact, the danger that diet products bring not only lies in the psychological effects they have on us, but also in the physical harm they cause. Diet foods and diet pills contain zero calorie only because the diet industry has created chemicals to produce these wonder products. And they can indirectly harm our bodies because consuming them instead of healthy foods means we are stopping our bodies having basic nutrients. Diet products may not be nutritional, and the chemicals that go into diet products are potentially dangerous.Losing weight lies in the power of minds, not in the power of chemicals. Think twice before buying diet products. Once we realize this, we will be much better able to resist diet products, and therefore, prevent the psychological and physical harm that comes from using them.28. From Paragraph 1, we learn that ________.A. diet products are in our daily lifeB. people have trouble choosing diet productsC. people should put up with diet productsD. diet products are misleading people29. The psychological effect of diet products is that people tend to ________.A. hesitate before they enjoy diet foodsB. pay attention to their daily dietC. watch their weight rather than their dietD. try out varieties of diet foods30. The underlined part in Paragraph 3 probably means _________.A. diet products cause no painB.losing weight is effortlessC. it costs a lot to lose weightD. diet products are free of fat and calories31. Diet products indirectly harm people physically because such products ________.A. are over-consumedB. are short of basic nutrientsC. lack chemicalsD. provide too much energyDRunning on EmptyFor almost a century, scientists have assumed, tiredness—or exhaustion—in athletes originates in the muscles(肌肉). Precise explanations have varied, but all have been based on the ―Limitations Theory‖. In other words, muscles tire because they hit a physical limit: they either run out of fuel or oxygen or they drown in harmful by-products(副产品).In the past few years, however, Timothy Noakes from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, has examined this standard theory. Tiredness, he argues, is caused not by signals springing from overtaxed muscles, but is an emotional response which begins in the brain. The fundamental nature of his new theory is that the brain paces the muscles to keep them well back from the edge of exhaustion. When the brain decides it’s time to quit, it creates unbearable muscle tiredness. This ―Central Governor‖ theory remains controversial, but it does explain many puzzling aspects o f athletic performance.A recent discovery that Noakes calls the ―lactic acid paradox‖ made him start researching this area seriously. Lactic acid is a by-product of exercise, and the increase of it is often mentioned as a cause of tiredness. But when research subjects exercise in certain conditions created artificially, they become tired even though lactic acid levels remain low. Nor has the oxygen content of their blood fallen too low for them to keep going. Obviously, something else was making them tire before they hit either of these physiological limits.Noakes conducted an experiment with seven cyclists. It has long been known that during exercise, the body never uses 100% of the available muscle fibers(纤维). The amount used varies, but in some tasks such as this cycling test the body calls on about 30%. His team found that as tiredness set in, the electrical activity in cyclist’s legs declined—even when they were making a great effort to cycle as fast as they could. To Noakes, this was strong evidence that the old theory was wrong. ―The cyclists may have felt completely exhausted,‖ he says, ―but their bodies actually had considerable reserves that they could theoretically tap by using a greater amount of the resting fibers.‖ This, he believes, is the proof that the brain is regulating the pace of the workout to hold the cyclists well back from the point of extreme tiredness.32, Which of the following is supported by the "Limitations Theory"?A.Tiredness is caused by signals from brain.B.The body uses 100% of the muscle fibers in exercise.C.Athletes feel tired when they use up all their energy.D.Athletes become tired though lactic acid levels remain low.33.Noakes has found out that .A.muscle fibers control athletes' movements.B.mental processes control the symptoms of tiredness.C.lactic acid levels remain high in cycling test.D.different exercises use different amount of muscle fibers.34.It is likely that both theories accept that .A.the energy in human bodies can be.B.the oxygen content in blood may rise after sports.C.tiredness is a harmful by-product of exercise.D.lactic acid is produced in muscles during exercise.35. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?A. The description of a new test.B. The explanation of the theory.C. The whole process of the research.D. The puzzling evidence of a study.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

The collection of happiness actions broadly categorized (把……归类) as “honor” help you create this life of good feelings. Here’s an example to show how honorable actions create happiness.Say a store clerk fails to charge us for an item. If we keep silent, and profit from the clerk’s mistake,we would drive homewith a sense of sneaky (暗中的) excitement. We would also demonstrate that we cannot be trusted, since we advertise our dishonor by telling our family and friends. Keeping on doing good deeds brings us peace of mind, which is important for our happiness.to the passage, the positive action in the example contributes to our________.?respect rewardsability relationshipauthor thinks that keeping silent about the uncharged item is equal to________.underlined phrase “bringing the error to the clerk’s attention” means________.the truth to the clerkadvice to the clerkthe clerk to be more attentivethe clerk of the charged itemswill we feel if we let the clerk know the mistake?’ll be very excited.’ll feel unfortunate.’ll have a sense of honor.’ll feel sorry for the clerk.of the following can be the best title of this passage?to Live Truthfullyof Peacefulnessof Gaining Self?respectthrough Honorable ActionsB(2013·济宁高考模拟)A euphemism (from the Greek words eu—well and pheme—speak) is a word or ex pression that is used when people want to find a polite or less direct way of talking about difficult or embarrassing topics like death or the bodily functions. Most people, for example, would find it very difficult to say in plain language that they have arranged for their sick old dog to be killed. They would soften the pain by saying:We had Ruby put down or We had Ruby put to sleep. Many people prefer to call someone plain than ugly,or cuddly rather than fat.Euphemisms are an important part of every language, but it seems that English has an ever?growing number of them. Thenon?native speaker not only has to make sense of the euphemisms he hears,he also has to learn which euphemisms are appropriate in any particular situation. He might be aware that his American friend needs to use the toilet when she asks where the bathroom (or restroom,or comfort station) is,but he is less likely to guess that his English friend has the same need when he says he has to see a man about a dog. Diet productsmake people believe that gain comes without pain, and that life can be without resistance and straggle. The fundamental nature of his new theory is that the brain paces the muscles to keep them well back from the edge of ex haustion. ―The cyclists may have felt c ompletely exhausted,‖ he says, ―but their bodies actually had considerable reserves that they could theoretically tap by using a greater amount of the resting fibers.‖ This, he believes, is the proof that the brain is regulating the pace of the workout to hold the cyclists well back from the point of extreme tiredness.32, Which of the following is supported by the "Limitations Theory"?A.Tiredness is caused by signals from brain.B.The body uses 100% of the muscle fibers in exercise.C.Athletes feel tired when they use up all their energy.D.Athletes become tired though lactic acid levels remain low.33.Noakes has found out that .A.muscle fibers control athletes' movements.B.mental processes control the symptoms of tiredness.C.lactic acid levels remain high in cycling test.D.different exercises use different amount of muscle fibers.34.It is likely that both theories accept that .A.the energy in human bodies can be.B.the oxygen content in blood may rise after sports.C.tiredness is a harmful by-product of exercise.D.lactic acid is produced in muscles during exercise.35. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?A. The description of a new test.B. The explanation of the theory.C. The whole process of the research.D. The puzzling evidence of a study.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
