My presentation was horrible. I lost the client(客户). My boss wouldn’t look me in the eye and the rest of my day was spent in relative silence——I was left alone,in reality. Finally,I left my air-conditioned office and of course, outside it was hot as hell(地狱).I was hot literally and figuratively as three buses passed, too full to stop and then the one t hat did stop should have kept going because the air conditioning wasn’t working.I boarded the bus but was unable to stand it,so I squeezed my way off at the next stop. I would just walk the mile and a half to home. I annoyed further,as I continued my journey. I refused to take off my jacket, purposely, maximizing my frustration(沮丧)——“when it rains, let it pour” was my philosophy(态度).A block from my building,I heard the water splashing(溅)and kids screaming(尖声叫)so I knew the fire hydrant(消防栓)had been turned on. Without even thinking about taking an alternate route,I turned the corner, sure enough, there was a group of children playing water. They were politely on the lookout to stop the water from spraying on any passer-by,so when they saw me they stopped the water and when they saw my mean look, they even got quiet. The younger ones in bathing suit, the girls wearing shower caps and the boys with water guns all stared at me as I started to pass by.Then I noticed a little one,no older than five, holding a water gun down by his side, eyeing me a little harder than the others. I eyed him back. Then his brother, who I had seen around the neighborhood, nodded at him like he was saying,“I dare you.” My eyes tightened a little further as I communicated my own “I dare you” to the five-year-old. Thenhis eyes moved, planning his escape route through the alley, and in that split second I knew I was going to get soaked.

His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. “The day starts at dawn on my farm,” he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze (吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn't going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. “Don't be late for supper,” Uncle Paul cried, “and keep to the track so that you don't get lost!” “OK!” my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven (编织的) blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.

A friend of mine, named Jack, received an expensive car from his brother as a Christmas present. On Christmas Eve when Jack came out of his office, a street urchin(顽童)was walking around the shining car.“Is this your car, sir?”he asked.“Yes, my brother gave it to me for Christmas.”Jack answered. The boy was surprised. “You mean your brother gave it to you and it did cost you nothing? Sir, I wish…”he hesitated.Jack smiled, thinking of course he knew what the boy wanted, but what the boy said surprised him greatly.“I wish,”the boy went on, “that I could be a brother like that.”Jack looked at the boy in surprise, and then he said again, “Would you like to take a ride in my car?”“Oh yes, I’d love to ”the boy answered cheerfully. After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes shining, said, “Sir, would you mind driving in front of my house?”Unexpected at the abrupt request, Jack looked at the house the boy was pointing at. Submerged(淹没) in flourish(茂密的) head-high weeds and biers(荆棘) was a shabby, seemingly abandoned cottage, with a mud alley leading to its weather-beaten wooden door. Jack smiled a little. This time he was sure he knew what the boy wanted.“Will you stop where those two steps are?”the boy asked.“Of course. I don’t mind waiting for a few minutes.”Promised Jack, expecting the boy to take some companions back to show off his lucky experience.Satisfied with the response, the boy got out and ran up to the steps. Jack got out and lifted the boy to the front seat of his car.

While waiting to pick up a friend at the airport in Portland, Oregon, I had an experience which occurred merely two feet away from me. Trying to locate my friend among the passengers coming through the jet way, I noticed a man walking toward me carrying two light bags. He stopped right next to me to greet his family. First he kissed his three children one by one and said, “It’s nice to see you. I missed you so much!” Then he hugged his wife, “I’ve saved the best for last!” giving her the longest, most passionate kiss I ever remember seeing.

When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher encouraged me to enter a writing contest, sponsored by an organization in our hometown. I demurred.I loved history.I did not love writing.I was a Cuban refugee, and English had been my nemesis from the moment I first shoved a chunky No. 2 pencil up and down the dashed lines of D’Nealian paper. My teacher knew my writing was cursory. And I knew that I lacked discipline. (What neither of us knew was that I was also dyslexic.)Writing was so excruciating that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic as an oral report —a one-act play, where I played all the parts. No one wheeze-laughed harder than he.So, why the sudden hectoring to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your stories. And if you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.”***Few things motivate a writer like a bit of shameless flattery.I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. The story would come straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant notion, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice. What did the horse think, as he ripped through the night, his coat sloughing sweat, his eyes wide with adrenaline? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit?I sympathized immediately.I got tired.I had doubts.I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s fabled horse, I kept going.I worked hard. I checked my spelling. With a dictionary.I enlisted my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half-dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them. When I handed in the finished essay, my teacher read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again. And no name. Entries are anonymous.”I wrote it again. And again and again. If I didn’t win, I didn’t care. I had poured a wobbly writer’s blood and sweat into something that made my teacher proud. Weeks passed. I forgot the competition. Thoughts of winning —a pipe dream to begin with —gave way to the enticements of a Georgia spring. Then came the news. There were two winners from each grade. A lanky, sweet-natured redhead in my class won second place.I won first place. That may have been the first time in my chatty life I was struck dumb, in any language. Our teacher hooted with delight, my classmates stared at me in open disbelief, and Second-Place Red gamely shook my hand. The following week, the winners met with the head of the sponsoring organization. We stood in the office, clutching our plaques and tittering to one another, when a small, birdlike woman entered. She spoke to the adults, then made her way down the line of winners, congratulating each of us and shaking hands. Red and I were last. We introduced ourselves. She looked from one to the other. She didn’t speak. She didn’t extend her hand. After a few awkward seconds, she cleared her throat and explained that there had been an embarrassing mistake. Then she gently reached down and took our plaques —hands crossing at the wrists, she re-assigned them —and apologized for the error.I was now the second-place winner. No one challenged her.It wasn’t until later that I remembered. Our entries were anonymous. How could she have known which child had won what?***I can’t tie a bow on the end of this strange tale and make it pretty. It’s not that kind of story. But there is this: I got ataste for writing that spring. I learned to respect a writer’s labor and perseverance. And —despite the challenges of both dyslexia and a second language —I never stopped writing.。

On Christmas Eve, seventy-three-year-old George selectedhis food carefully. Skim milk was $2.99 white bread,89 centswith a 10cent discount Leaving the cashier, he calculated that he had saved 80 cents today. At the exit, the wind reminded him of his gloves.“Where are they?”Not in the coat pockets. Not in the grocery bag either. He was sure he was wearing them when he entered the store. He clearly rememberedputting them into the pocket of this coat. George made a second thorough search of all his pockets, again including the grocery bag. Now he was sure they must have been dropped somewhere inside the store. Old George had bought the black leather gloves at a 25% discount, for just $35.00, ten years ago. They were soft and warm and very durable. He had taken care not to let a drop of water or rain touch his expensive gloves, so they looked like new. Losing this favorite possession wasalmost like losing a child to him.George, calm on the outside but nervous inside, reenteredthe store. He followed the same route he had walked before, starting at the bread counter, to the milk section, the corner where salt and sugar were placed, then the rest of the store.Several minutes of anxious searching turned out to be in vain. He asked the customers whether they saw a pair of black leather gloves, but they said no. Then he went over to the cashierwithout hesitation to ask if she had received any lost gloves, butonly received the same answer. His heart grew heavier.“Societyhas changed, people have changed”, he murmured to himself.“Years ago,if somebody picked up something lost, theywould give it back. Now a good action is lost.”Yet he did not give up hope. He started to stare at anybodywearing black gloves to see if they looked like his. The first two persons he saw did wear gloves, but one was women's and the other not black.Paragraph 1:Suddenly, he found a man looking like a lawyer, wearingblack leather gloves.Paragraph 2:During the whole holiday, he was always thinking whether2021年46期总第590期ENGLISH ON CAMPUSto buy a new one.2.

The Sea’s SurpriseJim and Andy walked along the beach, looking for an adventure. They joked that some day they would find a talking fish or a mermaid or a bottle with a treasure map inside. So far they had only found shells and rocks and seaweed. Today though was different. The boys felt excited.Sea crabs scampered on the rocks. Up one side and down the other. They were quick and lively. The tide didn’t seem to ever wash them away. Then Jim saw a fish. It was stranded on the beach, just flopping around.“Can it talk?” Andy asked.“It looks like any other fish,” Jim said. He picked it up gently and carried it to the water.“Do you think it will grant us any wishes?” Andy laughed. The boys watched as the silver fish sped off through the water. “No. Maybe next time.” Jim grinned. As the two friends walked farther down the beach they came upon a bottle. It was green with a cork in the mouth.“Our luck will change. Does it have a map inside or a genie?” joked Andy. Andy reached down and picked up the bottle. He rubbed it. Nothing happened. He pulled on the cork. Nothing happened. He shook it. Nothing happened.“ Try the cork again. I bet the genie is waiting for us to release him. Or we’ll find a treasure map and have a real adventure,” Jim exclaimed.Andy tugged again on the cork. He wiggled it back and forth. He twisted it around and around. Finally it popped out without breaking. Andy shook the bottle. Nothing came out. Looking inside he couldn’t see an ything. Jim looked too and shook his head. Empty.“It’s just an old wine bottle,” Jim complained. He grabbed the bottle and tossed it back onto the sand.

Paragraph 1:hit a rock and shattered into many pieces, saw a long, silver key, bent over to pick up the key, came together to form a bottle, began rolling slowly toward the seaParagraph 2:ran after, entered the sea, floated on the surface, followed the bottle, took as much as possible第五步:检查誊写Paragraph 1:The bottle hit a rock and shattered into many pieces. Both Andy and Jim gasped as they saw a long, silver key on the ground in the glass pieces. Thenthey looked at each other. Why didn’t it make any noise when they s hook the bottle? Why didn’t they see it? Andy bent over to pick up the key. Suddenly the glass pieces came together to form a bottle again. The key was mysteriously back inside! And the bottle began rolling slowly toward the sea.Paragraph 2:Two boys ran after it. When they entered the sea, astonishingly they didn’t sink into the water but floated on the surface of it. It was the stranded fish that Jim saved and put back into the water.。
