There are stock(股票) markets in large cities in many countries. Stock markets in Paris, London, Tokyo, Shanghai and New York are among the largest and most famous. The stock market, also called stock exchange, is a place where people can buy or sell shares of a factory or company. And each share means certain ownership of a factory or company.
Different people go to stock markets. Some are rich, who want to get more money than they have. Others are not very rich, who buy stocks to try to become rich. Still others buy stocks as part of their plan to save money.
Of course, investing money in the stock market is not the safest way to make money. No one can tell exactly whether the shares will be doing well. The factory or company may do badly. Then the stocks will go down, and the investors will lose money. The stock may go up or down for a number of untold reasons. Everyone wants the stock to go up, but sometimes even if a factory or company does a good job, the stock may still go down.
No wonder going to the stock market is often compared to

Young Volunteers(志愿者)Care for the Aged
Youth volunteers from Beijing University visited Songtang Hospital, a care clinic for dying patients, during the second Global Youth Service Day, on April 21, 2010.
Thirty student volunteers sat at the beds of the patients in their “care huts”. They talked with them and gave massages(按摩) to patients kept in their beds.
“It occurred to me that they need more care and love than babies. They are afraid of the coming death. Their loneliness is worse than
p hysical pains.” said Deng Yetao, 20, a third-year student.
“Even though they are suffering a lot, the majority of the elderly people want to talk to us. Each of them has a lot of life experiences and philosophies to share. Instead of doing them a favour, I felt I was gaining a valuable lesson.” said Mao Xiaohua, another third-year student.
Mao talked with two elderly patients for a whole afternoon. The
fact that most of the patients will lead to death soon made the volunteers’ heart heavy.
Ninety-one percent of the patients will spend the last days of
their lives in the clinic, according to the survey by the hospital. “For people at this stage of their lives, loneliness is even more dreadful than death itself,” said Li Wei, president of the hospital.
Daily visit and services by social workers and youth volunteers are a very important part of the programme. Elderly Citizens in the USA
The United States has been criticized for its treatment of its elderly citizens. Although in many other countries the elderly usually live with their children’s family, many older Americans live alone, without the close companionship(友情) of their children. This situation is sometimes blamed on the “selfishness” of the younger generation,
but a closer look shows that many of the elderly prefer to maintain
their independent lives.
Research on the situation of the elderly in America has shown that while grandparents are delighted to be visited periodically(间隔地) by their children and grandchildren, they prefer to continue living in the surroundings that they are familiar with. This suggests that children should permit their parents to live alone if they wish to, but should encourage them to maintain close ties to the rest of the family.
Another surprising result of research on the elderly in the United States has been the very positive influence which pets have been found to have on the elderly people that they live with . It has been shown that elderly people who care for small pets, such as cats and dogs, live longer, are healthier, and have better attitudes towards their lives than similar elderly people without these companions.
66. Many elderly Americans live _________.
A. without satisfaction
B. by themselves
C. a lonely life
D. a simple life
67. What do some people see as the cause of this situation?
A. The society of the U.S.A. treats its elderly people as troubles.
