Repression of Sexuality
Both men and women had to remain sexually dull in 1840 China.
"White Tigers" is based on another talk-story, one about the mythical female warrior Fa Mu Lan. Fa Mu Lan trains to became a warrior from the time she is seven years old, then leads an army of men--s"he even pretends to be a man by herself--against the forces of a corrupt baron and emperor. After her battle are over,she returns to be a wife and mother.

"Shaman" focouses on Kingston's
mother,Brave Orchid, and her old life back in China. Her mother was a powerful doctor, midwife（接生婆）, and destroyer of ghosts back in her village and her school. In her mother's talk-story--Chinese babies left to die, slave girls being brought and sold, a woman stoned to death （浸猪笼） by her villagers, haunt Kingston's dreams for years. At the end of the chapter, Kingston visits her mother after being away for many years, and arrives their understanding with each other.

It means the confusion of Chinese culture to first-generation Chinese Americans like the narrator.

Significance
The story of Fa Mu Lan is contrasted sharply with Kingston's own life in America, in which she can barely stand up to her racist bosses. Kingston realizes, however, that her weapons are her words.

This section focuses mainly on her anger and frustration in trying to express herself and attempting to please an unappreciative mother. At the end of story, Kingston combines very different worlds and cultures and creat a harmony of her own.
The presence of the ghosts serves to express the way that Kingston's Chinese heritage made her feel somewhat alienated from other Americans while growing up.
At the Western Palace(西宫门外）
Moon Orchid's husband, now a successful Los Angeles doctor, had left her behind in China and remarried in American. Brave Hale Waihona Puke Baidurchid urges her sister into a disatrous confrontation with the man. As a result, Moon Orchid, who does not speak a word of English, is left to fend herself in America. She eventually goes crazy and dies in a California state mental asylum.
Theme : ghosts
Brave Orchid considers all non-Chinese people to be ghosts. She sees these people as foreign and calling them “ghosts” though she has lived in America for so long. She still considers China to be her “home” and refers to America as a “terrible ghost country, where a human being works her life away.”
