Lesson 37
Lesson 37
Haiti is the western part of the island Hispaniola, officially known as “the Republic of Haiti” and Port-AuPrince is its capital. The name originated from Indian, meaning “a mountainous region”. Haiti has a population of 892 million. It has an area of 27,800 square kilometers. Blacks account for 90% of the population. Most of its people are descendants of slaves brought over from Africa centuries ago. French and Creole are the country’s two official languages.
Devastation extends from the slums to the presidential palace. Aid groups fear a catastrophic death toll1.

Author: A Brief Introduction
Lesson 37
Haiti is one of the most densely populated nations in the Western Hemisphere and it is also the least-developed countries. 4/5 of its people are illiterate. In 1804, Haiti gained independence and became the first blacks’ republic. As it has a long history of dictatorial rule, its people’s life is miserable. Most of its people are farmers and they could not earn that much to support their family. Because of widespread malnutrition and poor medical conditions, its average life expectancy is only 50 years.
Lesson 37
Over a year has passed since the earthquake. Although international organizations have provided Haiti with a lot of aid, the living conditions there are still harsh. The sanitation has been poor, so much so that cholera has swept across the country.
