Play the lute to a cowIn ancient time, there lived a musician named Gong Mingyi. He was very good at playing the Zheng, a plucked string instrument. But he also behaved foolishly sometimes. One day, he saw a cow eating grass in the field near his house. He was inspired by the scene and ran outside to play a tune for the cow. Gong Mingyi played beautifully and he himself was intoxicated by the music. But the cow paid no heed to the elegant sounds. It simply focused its attention on eating the grass. Gong Mingyi was surprised to see that. He couldn't understand why the cow was so indifferent to his performance. Obviously, it is not because his performance is poor. But the cow neither understood nor appreciated his elegant music! From that story comes the idiom "Play the lute to a cow", which implies that someone speaks or writes without considering his audience. In general speaking, the speaker or writer has over-estimated his listeners or readers. In these cases, the idiom mocks the audience rather than the speaker.

The story of "Playing the lute to a cow" has taught me the importance of understanding and accepting our differences. In the story, the cow cannot appreciate the beauty of the music played by the man because it simplydoes not have the ability to understand or appreciate music. Similarly, in our daily lives, we often encountersituations where we try to communicate or connect with others who are fundamentally different from us.For example, imagine a situation where I am trying to explain a complex scientific concept to someone who has no background in science. No matter how hard I try to simplify my explanation, the person may still struggle to understand because they lack the necessary knowledge and context. In this case, it would be unfair for me to expect the personto fully grasp the concept, just as it would be unfair for the man in the story to expect the cow to appreciate hismusic.

It is often used metaphorically to describe the futility of trying to convey complex ideas or emotions to someone who is not receptive or interested. The story behind the idiom is that of a farmer who, while playing his lute, noticed that his cow was not paying any attention. The farmer became annoyed and scolded the cow for not appreciating his music. The cow replied that she did not understand human language and could not appreciate the lute's melody. The moral of the story is that it is pointless to try to communicate with someone who does not share ourinterests or perspectives. It implies a disparity in knowledge, experience, or perspective that makes meaningful exchange impossible. The underlying principle is that effective communication requires a shared frame of reference, common ground, and a willingness to engage. When one party is unable or unwilling to meet these conditions, it becomes futile to attempt to convey complex ideas or nuanced concepts. The idiom serves as a cautionary tale against wasting one's time and effort on fruitless endeavors.

”(故事出处: 南朝·僧祐·《弘明集》)A nossa história teve lugar na China Antiga. No entanto, o boi velho permaneceu indiferente.

Playing the Lute to a Cow对牛弹琴Gong Mingyi was a famous musician in ancient times, who played the lute very well.

One day, while playing the lute indoors, Gong Mingyi saw a cow eating grass leisurely outside the window. He had a sudden whim to play some melodies for the cow. He first played the "Exercise of Qing Jiao", but the cow still kept on eating grass with head lowered. He seemed to realize that the melody was too highbrow for the cow to understand.

So he played several other melodies, imitating the buzzing sounds of swarms of flying mosquitoes, and the bleats of a calf looking for its companions. At this, to his surprise, the cow stopped eating grass, but raised its head, pricked up its ears, wagged its tail and, pacing up and down in small steps, began to listen attentively.
