有一次，公明仪出外游玩，随身还带着他心爱的琴。
来到郊外，看到这里风景秀丽，有青山有绿水，蓝天上飘着白云，心里非常开心。
他情不自禁地放下琴，席地而坐，弹了起来。
弹着弹着，他往四下里一看，竟没有一个人。
因为没有人听，他觉得这样弹琴好没意思。
还好，不远处有头老牛正在吃草，他心里想:“那就弹给老牛听吧!”于是，他就坐到老牛旁边，轻轻地舒展开十指，缓缓地弹了起来。
弹了一会儿，他抬头看看老牛，见它只管低头吃草，好像没听见似的。
他以为刚才弹的曲子还不够好听，又换了首更感人的，弹得也更加投入。
可是，老牛仍然无动于衷。
公明仪有点生气了，弹了一首又一首，直弹到筋疲力尽。
再看那头老牛，还是只顾吃着嫩草。
这时，他终于明白了:“对蠢牛弹琴，就是白费劲!”他懊丧地站起身来，准备回家去了。
谁知，在他收拾琴的时候，无意间碰到了一根琴弦，发出了有点像小牛叫的声音。
那老牛立即停止了吃草，抬起头来四面张望，见没有小牛，就摇了摇尾巴，又低头吃起草来。
公明仪见了，不觉自嘲起来:“不是老牛笨，是我自己蠢，弹琴不看对象。
