Sociologist Michael Lewis has been studying 50 families to find out just how much more. ks**5uLewis and his co-workers carried out their study by videotaping the families while they ateordinary meals in their own homes. They found that parents with small families talk actively with each other and their children. But as the number of children gets larger, conversation gives way to the parents’ efforts to control the loud noise they make. That can have an important effect on the children. “In general the more question-asking the parents do, the higher the children’s IQ scores,” Lewis says. “And the more children ther e are, the less question-asking there is.”The study also provides an explanation for why middle children often seem to have a harder time in life than their siblings(兄弟姐妹). Lewis found that in families with three or four children, dinner conversation is likely to center on the oldest child, who has the most to talk about, and the youngest, who needs the most attention. “Middle children are invisible.” Says Lewis. “When you see someone get up from the table and walk around during dinner, chances are it’s the middle child.” There is, however, one thing that stops all conversation and prevents anyone from having attention: “When the TV is on,” Lewis says, “dinner is a non-event.”1. The writer’s purpose in writing the text is to ______ .A. show the relationship between parents and childrenB. teach parents ways to keep order at the dinner tableC. report on the findings of a studyD. give information about family problems2. By saying “Middle children are invisible” in paragrap h 3, Lewis means that middle children______ .A. have to help their parents to serve dinnerB. get the least attention from the familyC. are often kept away from the dinner tableD. find it hard to keep up with other children3. Parents with large families ask fewer questions at dinner because ______ .A. they are busy serving food to their childrenB. they are busy keeping order at the dinner tableC. they have to pay more attention to younger childrenD. they are tired out having prepared food for the whole family4. Lewis research provides an answer to the question ______ .A. Why TV is important in family ks**5uB. why parents should keep good orderC. why children in small families seem to be quietD. why middle children seem to have more difficulties in life5. Which of the following statements would the writer agree to?A. It is important to have the right food for children.B. It is a good idea to have the TV on during dinner.C. Parents should talk to each of their children frequently.D. Elder children should help the younger ones at dinner.答案 CBBDC阅读2I was not quite seventeen when I decided to join the US Marine Corps. My mother tried her best to talk me out of my dream, and then finally signed the papers that would permit me to enter theservice. One day, nearly two years after the Philippines became my home, I was summoned to the office of Lieutenant(海军上尉)Colonel Boyd.He seemed to be a kind man, but I was pretty sure that he hadn't called me in to pass the time of day.Standing before his desk, I waited nervously as he read through some paperwork. Then he looked up.“Why, Private, haven't you written to your mother for more than six months?”I felt weak in my knees.Has it been that long? I thought.“I didn't have anything to say, Sir.”Lieutenant Colonel Boyd told me that my mother had contacted the American Red Cross, which in turn communicated with my commanding officer about my failure to write. Then he asked, “Do you see that desk, Private?”“Yes, Sir.”“Open the top drawer and you'll find some paper and a pen.Sit down right this minute and find something to say to your mother.”“Yes, Sir.”When I finished a brief letter, I stood before him again.“Private, I'm ordering you to find something to say to your mother at least once a week.Do you understand?” I did. Some thirty-five years later, my aged mother's mental condition was deteriorating, and I was forced to place her in a convalescent home(疗养所).As I went through her belongings, I began inspecting the contents of an old cedar chest. At the bottom, tied with a bright red ribbon, I found a bundle of letters. They were the letters I had been ordered to write from the Philippines.I sat on the floor of her apartment that afternoon reading each one, tears streaming down my cheeks.I now realized how deeply, as a young man, had upset her by my lack of consideration. The lesson I learned may have been too late to help my mother, but it's still done me good. These days I don't need a commanding officer standing over me to write to my loved ones on a regular basis.1.When the writer decided to join the to spend more time with my mother3.Why did Lieutenant Colonel Boyd order the writer to write to his mother?A.Because he was always strict with his soldiers.B.Because he got a letter of complain from more adventurous than young men when travelling abroad in gap years. One in three female backpackers visits more than three countries during a year out and travels alone, according to new research.By contrast, the majority of their male counterparts visit only one country and tend to travel in groups, says a survey by the Gap Year company, which provides information and services for students considering taking a year out.More women than men say that their prime reason for taking time off is to see the world and experience different cultures.Men were more likely to rank “having fun” highe r on their list of priorities.Women were more likely to value the challenge of a foreign trip, and many cited reasons such as learning a language and meeting new people. The more adventurous gap years taken by women seem to work to their benefit; more than three quarters of those surveyed reported increased confidence, self-reliance and independence, whereas only half of the men had that experience. The research also showed that women were more likely to do voluntary work while travelling, with more than one in ten helping with teaching or development projects. One of the reasons given for this is a wish to see the country in an authentic light.A greater proportion of women than men faced objections or criticism from their families over their gap-year plans.Among the men surveyed, lack of money was the main barrier to travel.Carolyn Martin, a doctor from London, was a typically confident female traveller.Starting in Cape Town, she travelled around southern Africa and Australia with a string of unusual and sometimes dangerous jobs.“I had one job chasing elephants off the runway in Africa by banging a stick against a pan,” she recalled.“It was OK but one day I did get chased by one.”She said that she had travelled alone because “you meet more people”.1.By referring to “gap year” the writer means ________.A.a gap you come across after leaving high schoolB.a time when you are caught in a dilemma between work and studyC.a period before you find a job upon your graduation from collegeD.a year off between high school and college for certain purposes2.According to the article, ________.A.most of the women students will travel abroad during the summer holidaysB.one third of the women students will travel abroad in a yearC.women students are more likely to travel abroad alone in gap yearsD.women students are willing to travel abroad in a group3.In the third paragraph, the underlined word “priorities” most probably means ________.A.selections B.Attractions C.preferences D.projects 4.Which of the following statements is TRUE?A.Men students will travel less during the gap year because of their part-time jobs.B.Women students will travel more but face more objections.C.The article suggests that women travelling alone will have dangerous experiences.D.Men students prefer to travel inside their own country to going abroad.5.Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?A.Girls Get the Best out of Gap YearsB.Boys Lack Courage in Gap YearsC.For Fun or for Adventure?D.Young Women Are More Adventurous答案DCCBA阅读4A person may have an idea about himself that will prevent him from doing good work.He may have the idea that he is not capable of it.A child may think he is stupid because he does not understand how to make the most of his mental faculties(机能), or he may accept another person's mistaken estimate(评价)of his ability.Older people may be handicapped(阻碍)by the mistaken belief that they are incapable of learning anything new because of their age.A person who believes that he is incapable will not make a real effort, because he feels that it would be useless. He won't go at a job with the confidence necessary for success. He is therefore likely to fail, and the failure will strengthen his belief in his incompetence.Alfred Adler, a famous doctor, had an experience which illustrates this. When he was a small boy he got off to a poor start in arithmetic. His teacher got the idea that he had no ability in arithmetic, and told his parents what she thought in order that they would not expect too much of him.In this way, they too developed the idea, “Isn't it too bad that Alfred can't do arithmetic?” He accepted their mistaken estimate of his ability, felt that it was useless to try,and was very poor at arithmetic, just as they expected. One day Adler succeeded in solving a problem which none of the other students had been able to solve. This gave him confidence. He rejected the idea that he couldn't do arithmetic and was determined to show them that he could. His new-found confidence stimulated him to go at arithmetic problems with a new spirit. He now worked with interest, determination and purpose, and he soon became extraordinary good at arithmetic. This experience made him realize that many people have more ability than they think they have, and that lack of success is as often the result of lack of knowledge of how to apply one's ability, lack of confidence, and lack of determination as it is the result of lack of ability.1.Why might a person be prevented from doing good work? ________.A.Because he thinks he is old enough to make the most of his mental facilitiesB.Because he accepts another person's mistaken estimate of his abilityC.Because he has the idea that he is incapable of doing everythingD.Because he believes in what other people think of him2.A person who believes in his low ability will ________.A.spare no efforts to do thingsB.fail to go at a job but never lose heartC.change to learn other course instead of mathematicsD.show complete lack of confidence3.As a boy, Alfred Adler was poor at arithmetic because ________.A.he lost his self-confidenceB.he was weak in thinkingC.his parents expected too much of himD.his teacher had no confidence in herself4.Which of the following is the most important factor to Alder's success?________ A.Spirit and experienceB.Interest and self-respectC.Confidence and determinationD.Purpose and knowledge5.Alder's experience made him realize that ________.A.people are not as capable as they thinkB.people can be more capable than they At the top of the agenda were fundamental improvements in the training of operators and the design of control systems for reactors. The International Atomic Energy Agency also chose the meeting on the Chernobyl accident to announce it would step up its safety checks of nuclear power stations. Up to that time, with more than 300 nuclear power plants operating worldwide, the IAEA had sent safety review teams to inspect stations in only nine countries, mostly in the Third World. Now the emphasis would switch to reactors in the developed world, including the Soviet Union, US and Britain.According to regulations, an international safety review could be undertaken by the IAEA only following a formal request from a member country. However, the meeting in Vienna produced a list of 14 recommendations for future action following the Soviet report on Chernobyl. The IAEA meeting said that better fire protection and more advanced techniques for firefighting were needed. The possibility of developing lightweight clothing to protect firefighters from radiation was of particular interest; so was the use of robot firefighters. The Soviet Union used minerals and sand to damp down the fires. Both Soviet and Western experts agreed there was no way of knowing in advance if this would work. Luckily, it did.Decontamination (去除放射性污染) was another area where theinternational nuclear community was anxious to learn more from Chernohyl. The Soviet clean-up involved treating buildings and the ground around the reactor with special chemicals to reduce the spread of radioactive dust. Heavily contaminated soil was removed. At the final press conference about the Chemohyl accident, the leader of the Soviet delegation (代表团) claimed that Chernobyl would not be repeated. There would have to be greater efforts to make sure that the design of nuclear plants eliminated the possibility of errors by operatorns. This would include making it difficult to override (使无效) safety systems, as happened at Chernobyl. It would also mean greater use of simulators (模拟装置) to train operators.第61题:According to paragraph 1, nuclear experts thought that in order to make nuclear power safer the first thing to do should be ______.A.to improve the training of operators and the design of the reactors' control systemsB.to inspect nuclear power plants in the Third WorldC.to send safety review teams to all the developed countriesD.to hold a meeting on the Chernobyl accident第62题:At the meeting on the Chernohyl accident , the IAEA said that it would ______.A.inspect all the nuclear power plants in the worldB.send more safety review teams to the developing countriesC.inspect nuclear power stations in another 9 countriesD.pay much more attention to the safety conditions of the reactors in the developed countries第63题:According to paragraph 2, in the Chernohyl accident ______.A.the firefighters wore special lightweight clothing to protect themselves from radiationB.the fire was extinguished by robot firefightersC.nothing was used to put out the fire because no one knew what could be usedD.minerals and sand were used to put out the fire第64题:In the last two sentences of paragraph 2, both "this" and "it" refer to ______.A.the fireB.the sandC.the use of minerals and sand to put out the fireD.the use of robot firefighters to put out the firePassage TwoBritain's government raises millions of pounds each year from the National Lottery (抽奖) and some of this money is used as an additional allowance for the arts. But this money can only be spent on "capital projects", and not on an institution's day-to-day expenses.Lottery money has been made available for many exciting new building projects to improve theatres, galleries and museums. But the project which has received the most publicity is the £ 78 million renewal on the Royal Opera House in London's Covent Garden. The House is the home of Britain's greatest opera company, as well as the Royal Ballet(芭蕾舞团). It's also considered to be the best arts institutions -- tickets to the opera can cost up to 200 -- and not everyone is happy that so much lottery money is being used for the benefit of a rich minority. But since builders moved into the Royal Opera House last July, that controversy has been overshadowed by a more serious crisis: the opera company is facing financial collapse.According to a special investigation, the crisis is the result of serious mismanagement by Opera House staff, and there have been calls for its allowance to be withdrawn completely. Now, the Opera House has to wait to hear from a government working party about its future survival. 第65题:Which Of the following's renewal has received the public's attention most?A.The gallery.B.The museum.C.The Royal Opera House.D.The park.第66题:Some people don't think it good to spend so much lottery money renewing the Royal Opera House because ______.A.the House itself has enough money to renew itB.the House is not too old, so renewing it is unnecessaryC.only a few people like to attend the opera or the balletD.only a rich minority can afford to enjoy the opera or the ballet第67题:The statement "that controversy ... financial collapse" (Para. 3, sentence 1) can be best paraphrased as ______.A.that controversy has become less important because of the opera company's financial crisisB.that controversy has become more serious because of the opera company's financial crisisC.that controversy has become more important than the opera company's financial crisisD.that controversy has been caused by the opera company's financial crisis.第68题:Who should be responsible for the opera company's financial crisis?A.The company president.B.The company staff.C.The government.D.The public.Passage ThreeIt is hard to imagine a more perfect gift than a fine watch, which lasts a lifetime and can become a family heirloom (传家宝). "Other gifts that you give don't last very long," says vice president Karl-Friedrich Scheufele of Geneva-based Chopard. "And there are very few that stay with the person wherever they go. This is the amazing thing about watches -- they are both beautiful and intimate. You have one on your wrist, and you remember a happy time in your life when you look at it."For something so personal, choosing the right watch demands corresponding care. Here is a brief look at some trends watch buyers will encounter this season. The most obvious trend in watches this season is the overwhelming popularity of sports watches in stainless steel. Yellow gold and two-tone watches of gold and steel are out -- and full steel is in.With the steel trend comes sportiness (花哨), which has been the industry's watchword, as it were, for the past three years. Generally speaking, the demand for large-scale steel-case designs -- with either steel or leather straps -- has led to a great supply of large, even bulky, designs for both men and women. "There is a demand for watches that are bigger and bolder," says Suryia Hill, media-relations manager for Roberg6 Watches Geneva. At Citizen, bulky sports watches are the big sellers. "People like to differentiate themselves with their watches, and calm, thin designs are not popular at the moment," says Willi Richter, general manager of Hamburg-based Citizen Watch Europe GmbH. "Young, middle-aged and even older people these days want to show that they are active, so they prefer bold, active watches."第69题:A fine watch is regarded as a perfect gift for all of the following reasons EXCEPT ______.A.it can last a very long timeB.everyone needs a watchC.it stays with the gift receiverD.it is a witness of a person's happy moments第70题:What does "in" (Para. 3, last sentence) mean?edB.welcomeC.popularD.obtainable第71题:What can be inferred from sentence 1 in paragraph 4?A.Sportiness goes together with steel.B.Sportiness has been the password for some years.C.It seems as if sportiness were the password.D.Sports watches have been popular for some years.第72题:This text is most probably ______.A.a part of an advertising sectionB.a part of a sales catalogC.a trend analysisD.a technical paperPassage FourIn 10 years, the mutual-fund industry won't even be called that. The term "mutual fund" will be much too confining to encompass(包括) the various types of mixed investment vehicles(手) that will be available to investors around the world. Technology, especially the Internet, will be the most significant driver, affecting every aspect of the mutual-fund industry, from products and delivery to providers and customers. The future version of today's mutual funds will be available for purchase across the globe by citizens of many nationalities in just about any currency. The average investor will be able to trade bonds as well as stocks with ease 24-hours a day, 365 days a year by using voice-held, satellitelinked PCs. A Brazilian citizen, for example, will be able to buy shares of the Vanguard 500 Index Fund in London at midnight, using its price in New York at 02:00 Greenwich Time, to be settled in Japanese yen. With the vast amount of information and instantaneous (瞬间) service available to investors through the Internet, the merits of an investment product will drive its consumption. Investment products in the next decade will come in finer shades of investment objectives. Demand for investment products will be huge around the world. In the United States, there has been considerable discussion of the impact that maturing baby boomers will have on financial markets and levels of investment. The subsequent Generation X and Internet Generation groups are very likely to pick up any slack (呆滞,萧条) due to disinvestment by boomers, and on their own, elevate investment to a new level by 2008. Generation X'ers(新生的一代人) appear to be more highly motivated to invest than the boomers, while the Net Generation' s comfort level with technology will stimulate investment as well.第73题:Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A.The future citizens of different countries can have a purchase across the globe by means of mutual funds.B.The advantage of an investment product through the Internet will accelerate its consumption.C.Technology will have a mild effect on mutual fund industry and investment products.D.Investment products in the next 10 years will show up in slight differences of investment objectives.第74题:The word "settle" (Para. 2) most probably means ______.A.determinepareC.establishD.pay第75题:It can be inferred from the passage that ______.A.the great changes in the investment vehicles will be one of the characteristics of global economyB.Generation X will be stimulated by their level with technology to invest more than their fathersC.mutual fund industry will face a tough situation caused by the use of new technologyD.American people have different opinions about the influence of maturing baby boomers on the financial markets第76题:The best title for this passage might be ______.A.Mutual Fund IndustryB.Technology in Mutual FundC.Transformation of the Mutual-fund IndustryD.Investment and Baby BoomingPassage FiveIn general, cognitive(认知的) psychologists who study memory, language, and thought see these human behaviors as information processing involving input, processing (coding and storage ), and retrievel (检索). Perhaps the best and most obvious way to describe the information processing view of thought is to compare the human being with a computer. Information is coded and fed into a computer in an organized way. When the computer is asked to produce a part of that information, the machine searches its memory and outputs the information on a screen or prints it out. For example, we might ask for the names of all people hired by a large multinational bank on July 12, 1984. This relatively simple task is equivalent to asking you to search your memory for the names of the first seven presidents of the United States. Then we might ask the computer to tell us who among the workers hired on July 12, 1984, was the most productive. This task is more complex because these data do not exist in the computer precisely in that form. The computer could not simply reproduce information from its memory; to produce the data requested, it would have to process the information it did have -- analyze and manipulate it in some way. If the computer had data on the number of items processed per day, the absences, and the number of quality complaints for each worker, it could collect that information, analyze it, and answer the question. The operation of human cognitive processes is basically similar to the way a computer functions but except for speed of calculation, our abilities far surpass those of the most sophisticated computer. One area of research, known as artificial intelligence, concentrates on developing computer programs that reproduce certain human cognitive functions. Although some of the programs work well in certain simplified situations, no program can yet cope with the complex input and output functions required of most human beings. In order to understand how we process information, we will look at three stages -- input, processing (coding and storage), and retrieval -- in more detail.第77题:How does the author describe the information processing of thought and memory? _________第78题:How does the computer cope with the complex task -- selecting the most productive worker? ________第79题:Why does the author say that human beings far surpass computers? ________ 第80题:What should the author talk about in the next paragraph? _________翻译第81题:It was not often realized that women held a high place in southern European societies in the 10th and 11th centuries. As a wife the woman was protected by the setting up of a dowry(陪嫁). Admittedly, the purpose of this was to protect her against the risk of being discarded, but in reality, its function is that social and family life of the time was much more important. The dowry was the wife's right to receive a tenth of all her husband's property. The wife had the fight to withhold consent in all transactions the husband would make. (2) And more than just a fight: the documents show that she enjoyed a real power of decision, equal to that of her husband. In no case do the documents indicate any degree of difference in the legal status of husband and wife.__3) The wife shared in the management of her husband's personal property, but the opposition was not always true. (4) Women seemed perfectly prepared to defend their own interests against husbands who tried to exceed their rights, and on occasion they showed a fine fighting spirit.A case in point is that of Marls Vivas, a Catalan woman of Barcelona. Having agreed with her husband Miro to sell a field she had inherited, for the needs of household, she insisted on compensation. None being offered, she succeeded in dragging her husband to the scribe to have a contract duly drawn up assigning her a piece of land from Miro's personal inheritance. The unfortunate husband was obliged to agree, as the contract says, "for the sake of peace". (5) Either through the dowry or through beinghot-tempered, the wife knew how to win herself, within the extent of the family, a powerful economic position. ____________写作Directions: You are to write a composition on topic "Population Problem" in no less than 120 words according to the outline given below. Paintings by Ruby, an Asian elephant who lived at the Phoenix Zoo in Arizona, sold for up to $5,000 in the late 1980s, said Dick George, a consultant with the zoo. "Ruby was about seven months old when she first came to the zoo", said George. "She lived with a goat and some chickens, but she didn"t have an elephant companion for a number ofyears. She spent a lot of time drawing in the dirt with a stick to make her days more stimulating. Her keeper bought her some art supplies". George said, ", Ruby was excited about painting right from the beginning". The elephants at the art academies in the Southeast Asia are taught to hold a paintbrush with the tip of their trunks. Initially, the keeper guides the elephant"s trunk over the canvas(画布) and offers rewards for good performance. A competitive personality is seen as important to success, especially in men. The development of social and political skills is also considered to be very important. To help Americans develop these other important skills, schools have added a large number of extracurricular(课程外)activities to daily life at school. This is especially tree of high schools and colleges and extends down into elementary schools as well. Athletics, frequently called "competitive sports", are perhaps the most important of these activities. Football, basketball, and baseball teams are seen as very important in teaching students, particularly boys, the "winning spirit". At times, athletic teams seem to become more important to some students and their parents than the academic programs offered by the schools.第16题Americans believe that education is ______.A.the only way to successB.the main purpose of the schoolsC.just like climbing laddersD.important to success第17题Which of the following is NOT mentioned as important to success?A.intellectual achievementpetitive personalityC.social backgroundsD.social and political skills第18题A variety of extracurricular activities are added in American schools ______.A.to help students climb the education ladderB.to enrich students" dull life at schoolC.to help students become more successful in later lifeD.to extend college education down into elementary schools第19题Athletic activities are designed ______.A.to make boys strongerB.to teach students winning spiritC.to develop students" social and political skillsD.to improve the academic programs第20题Which of the following can be the best title for this passage?cation and SuccessB.Extracurricular Activities at SchoolC.Athletic SportsD.Intellectual Achievement上一题下一题(21~25/共20题)阅读理解People once widely believed that intelligent life existed on Mars. The 19th-century discovery of what appeared to be geometric designs cut across the surface was taken as evidence. The lines were thought to have been a system of canals that had been built to irrigate the surface. It is now clear that "canals"—perhaps the most spectacular geologic features of Mars—are natural valleys where ancient rivers once flowed. Another fragmented idea concerns the planet"s seasonal changes in color. Once attributed to the rapid spread of some life-form, these shifts are nowknown to develop from the movement of fine dust in the atmosphere. By the close of the 20th century none of the many experiments conducted by spacecraft had ever found persuasive evidence of life. Nevertheless, speculation continued over the existence of some form of life, in either the present or the past. In 1996 scientists discovered organic compounds and minerals in a meteorite(陨石), consisting of Martian rock, that collided with Earth around 11,000 B.C. These compounds suggest that Mars may have been inhabited by organisms more than three billion years ago.第21题Why did people in the 19th century believe the existence of intelligent life on Mars?A.Because the surface of Mars seemed to be geometric.B.Because the lines were drawn across the surface of the planet.C.Because a system of canals was thought to be there.D.Because it was the Martians that built the canals.第22题The "canals" on Mars have proved to be ______ according to the passage.A.the minor geologic characteristic of MarsB.natural valleys on the surface of MarsC.rivers that have kept flowing since ancient timesD.a system that irrigates the whole surface第23题What were the Mars" seasonal changes in color believed to be?A.The natural changes on the planet.B.The seasonal cycles.C.The movement of some life form.D.The storm of dust in its atmosphere.第24题How is the 1996 discovery related to the possible existence of organisms on Mars?A.The meteorite containing organic compounds is part of Mars.B.A Martian rock struck Earth about 11,000 years ago.C.The organisms came back to life after the collision with Earth.D.The inhabiting organisms appeared more than three billion years ago.第25题How many arguments in this passage lead to the belief of the existence of life on Mars?A.Two.B.Three.C.Four.D.Five.上一题下一题(26~30/共20题)阅读理解Weather Forecast The following forecast shows for the listed cities the projected weather conditions and the expected range of temperatures from the afternoon high to the evening low. 图片第26题According to the forecast, ______.A.Kansas City will be warmer than TorontoB.temperatures will be the lowest in Seattle and MinneapolisC.the weather will be fine in most of the listed citiesD.more than half of the listed cities ore cloudy or rain likely第27题Among the following four cities, the difference between the afternoon high and the evening low is smallest in ______.A.Kansas CityB.MiamiC.AtlantaD.Seattle第28题Which of the following cities is closest m Miami in weather conditions?A.BostonB.AtlantaC.WashingtonD.Houston第29题The difference between the afternoon high and the evening low is greatest in ______.A.SeattleB.Los Angeless VegasD.Phoenix第30题The differences between the afternoon high and the evening low are the same in ______.A.Chicago, Dallas, Kansas City, and St. LouisB.Atlanta, San Francisco, New Orleans, and SeattleC.Cleveland, Dallas, St. Louis, and Washington,D.C.D.Pittsburg, Miami, Houston, and Boston上一题下一题(31~40/共10题)完型填空How much sleep does a person need?【B1】the physiological bases of the need for sleep remain conjectural(猜想), rendering conclusive answers to this question impossible, much evidence has been gathered on how much sleep people do in fact obtain. It is often tempting to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set updangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child. This might happen at any stage. A baby might be forced to use a toilet too early, a young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasm for life and his desire to find out new things for himself. Parents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters. Others are severe over times of coming home at night or punctuality for meals. In general, the controls imposed represent the needs of the parents and the values of the community as much as the child"s own happiness. As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is very important in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality(道德). Also, parents should realize that "example is better than precept". If they are not sincere and do not practise what they preach(说教), their children may grow confused, and emotionally insecure when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent fooled. A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents" principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment.第11题Eagerly watching the child"s acquisition of new skills______.A.should be avoidedB.is universal among parentsC.sets up dangerous states of worry in the childD.will make him lose interest in learning new things第12题In the process of children"s learning new skills parents______.A.should encourage them to read before they know the meaning of the words they readB.should not expect too much of themC.should achieve a balance between pushing them too hard and leaving them on their ownD.should create as many learning opportunities as possible第13题The second paragraph mainly tells us that______.A.parents should be strict with their childrenB.parental controls reflect only the needs of the parents and the values of the communityC.parental restrictions vary, and are not always enforced for the benefit of the children aloneD.parents vary in their strictness towards their children according to the situation第14题The word "precept"(Para. 3) probably means"______"A.ideaB.punishmentC.behaviourD.instruction第15题In moral matters, parents should______.A.observe the rules themselvesB.be aware of the marked difference between adults and childrenC.forbid things which have no foundation in moralityD.consistently ensure the security of their children上一题下一题(16~20/共20题)阅读理解图片第16题The service in the first advertisement is directed to the following EXCEPT ______.A.contract organizationsB.real estate companiesC.individual personsD.special construction companies第17题The services provided in the first advertisement do not include ______.A.demolishing housesB.cleaning up construction sitesC.transporting machinesD.headache curing第18题Golden Touch Construction is ______.A.a private companyB.a national agencyC.an international cooperationD.charge-free organization第19题Services provided by Golden Touch Construction include ______.A.kitchen decorationB.bathroom buildingC.bar demolitionD.house purchase第20题Both ads promised to provide ______.A.insuranceB.cheap priceC.free estimatesD.free designing上一题下一题(21~25/共20题)阅读理解Concern with money, and then more money, in order to buy the conveniences and luxuries of modern life, has brought great changes to the lives of most Frenchmen. More people are working than ever before in France. In the cities the traditional leisurely midday meal is disappearing. Offices, shops and factories are discovering the greater efficiency of a short lunch hour in company lunchrooms. In almost all lines of work emphasis now falls on ever-increasing output. Thus the "typical" Frenchman produces more, earns more, and buys more consumer goods than his counterpart of only a generation ago. He gains in creature comforts and ease of life. What he loses to some extent is his sense of personal uniqueness, or individuality. Some say that France has been Americanized. This is because the United States is a world symbol of thetechnological society and its consumer products. The so-called Americanization of France has its critics. They fear that "assembly-line life" will lead to the disappearance of the pleasures of the more graceful and leisurely old French style. What will happen, they ask, to taste, elegance, and the cultivation of the good things in life-to joy in the smell of a freshly picked apple, a stroll by the river, or just happy hours of conversation in a local cafe? Since the late 1940"s life in France has indeed taken on qualities of rush, tension, and the pursuit of material gain. Some of the strongest critics of the new way of life are the young, especially university students. They are concerned with the future, and they fear that France is threatened by the triumph of the competitive, goods-oriented culture. Occasionally, they have reacted against the trend with considerable violence. In spite of the critics, however, countless Frenchmen are committed to keeping France in the forefront of the modem economic world. They find that the present life brings more rewards, conveniences, and pleasures than that of the past. They believe that a modern, industrial France is preferable to the old.第21题Which of the following is not given as a feature of the old French way of life?A.Leisure.B.Elegance.C.Efficiency.D.Tast第22题Which of the following is not related to the new French way of life?A.Shorter lunch hour.B.Greater output.C.Creature comfort.D.Leisurely cafe talk.第23题Nowadays few Frenchmen ______.A.prefer the modern life styleB.actually enjoy working at the assembly lineC.are more concerned with money than in the pastD.are more competitive than the old generation第24题The passage suggests that ______.A.in pursuing material gains the Frenchmen are suffering losses elsewhereB.it"s now unlikely to see a Frenchman enjoying a stroll by the riverC.the French are fed up with the smell of freshly picked applesD.great changes have occurred in the life style of all Frenchmen第25题Which of the following best states the main idea of the passage?A.Changes in the French way of life.B.Criticism of the new life style.C.The Americanization of France.D.Features of the new way of lif上一题下一题。

One theory claims that prehistoric birds of the Northern Hemisphere were forced south during the Ice Age. As the glaciers melted, the birds came back to their homelands, spent the summer, and then went south again as the ice advanced in winter. In time, the migration became a habit in spite of the disappearance of glaciers.Another theory proposes that the ancestral home of all modem birds was the tropics. When the region became overpopulated, many species were crowded north. During the summer, there was plenty of food, but during the winter, scarcity forced them to return to the tropics.A more recent theory suggests a relationship between increasing daylight and the stimulation of certain glands (腺) in the birds' bodies that may prepare them for migration. One scientist has been able to cause midwinter migrations by exposing birds to artificial periods of daylight. He has concluded that changes occur in the bodies of birds due to seasonal changes in the length of daylight.第11题:According to one theory, when the glaciers disappeared, birds ______.A.stopped migratingB.continued migratingC.stayed in the northD.migrated south and stayed there第12题:The author states that birds left the tropics because ______.A.there was not enough food there in the winterB.there were too many birdsC.there were too many glaciersD.there was too much daylight第13题:Why did one scientist expose birds to artificial daylight?A.To test the relationship between daylight and a disease of the glands common to birds.B.To test the relationship between daylight and migration.C.To test the relationship between migration and temperature.D.To test the relationship between daylight and changes in the season.第14题:According to the theory of photo-periodism, ______.A.birds should migrate in the middle of the winterB.longer days cause changes in the bodies of birdsC.seasonal changes in the length of days do not affect migrationD.increasing daylight increases the distance of migrationThis passage supports the belief that ______.A.exact reasons for migration are not knownB.birds migrate because of changes in temperatureC.the ancestral home of all birds was the tropicsD.glaciers caused birds to migrateIn Guangzhou, capital of South China's Guangdong Province, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport resumed its international flights to Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and other Southeast Asian nations and regions early this month, said an airport official yesterday. Their friends, with good will, sometimes lean forward to rearrange their neckwear, touching their hair or patting their faces--things they would never presume to do, unasked, to one of their contemporaries. An equally humiliating habit is to talk about old people in front of them as if they were not there, discussing their health. It is now universally accepted that children should be encouraged to do as much as they can for themselves in order to develop their brains and muscles, but so few people today seem to have time to allow the elderly the same means of keeping their minds and muscles active. They perform innumerable services for the old that they would be much better left to do, even with a struggle, for themselves.Convenient flats, "motherly" visitors, or organized entertainments cannot make up for the fundamental need which must be satisfied--the need to retain to the end of life human dignity and the respect of one's fellows.第21题:Many people are not aware that it is rather rude to ______.A.talk casually about old people in front of them as if they were not thereB.show sympathy for the oldC.take care of the old when they are not illD.pat the faces of the contemporaries第22题:According to the passage the old would very much like to ______.A.live aloneB.live in comfortable and well-run homesC.be treated as adults instead of babiesD.get unselfish help from their friends and relatives第23题:The author suggests that ______.A.much sympathy will inevitably humiliate the oldB.kindness and unselfish help are not necessarily what the old needC.the old should be left to do whatever they want by themselvesD.to the old, the friends' and relatives' respect is, at least, as important as their concern第24题:If the old are left to do as much as they can for themselves, ______.A.they may keep human dignity and enjoy the respect of the fellowsB.they won't feel hurt or humiliatedC.they will be able to develop their brains and musclesD.they will be able to keep their minds and muscles active第25题:The passage is mainly about that ______.A.improper care and concern may do more harm than good to the oldB.how to take good care of the old in different waysC.nowadays many people are not respectful enough to the oldD.old people are just like children, who are difficult to satisfyON DEMAND BUSINESS.IN DEMAND PEOPLE.CAREERS IN IBM ARE ALL ABOUT OPPORTUNITIESWorld leading multinational IT company. The games got their name from Olympia, the Greek city where they took place. Like the summer Olympics of today, the ancient Olympics were held every four years. Thousands of people from all over the Greek world came to watch. The main stadium held about 45,000 people. "We have accounts of visitors and pilgrims setting uptents all around the site", Lisa Cerrato of Tufts University said. During the first Olympics, there was only one competition—a 200-meter race. But over time the games grew to include wrestling, chariot racing, boxing, and other sports. Women were not allowed to compete, but they had their own separate games. "The ancient athlete became celebrities(名人), just like today. They often lived the rest of their lives being treated to free dinners", Cerrato said. "City-states even tried to steal away each other"s athletes by offering them various awards". The ancient Olympics existed until A.D. 393. Just as bodies require more maintenance with the passing years, so do brains, which scientists now know show signs of aging as early as the 20s and 30s. "Brain aging starts at a very young age, younger than any of us had imagined and these processes continue gradually over theyears", said Dr. Gary Small, the director of the Center on Aging at the University of California, Los Angeles. "I"m convinced that it is never too early to get started on a mental or brain-fitness program", he added. In his book, The Memory Bible, the 51-year-old neuroscientist(神经学家) lists what he refers to as the 10 suggestions for keeping the brain young. They include training memory, building skills, reducing stress, mental exercises, brain food and a healthy lifestyle. It"s a game plan for keeping brain cells sparking and neural networks in perfect shape. "Misplacing your keys a couple of times don"t mean you should start labeling your cabinets. Memory loss is not an inevitable consequence of aging. Our brains can fight back", he said. Small provides the weapons for a fun-scale attack Simple memory tests give an indication of what you are up against and tools such as "look" and "connect" are designed to make sure that important things such as names and dates are never forgotten. "So if you wanted to learn names and faces, for example, you meet Mrs. Beatty and you notice a distinguishing facial feature, maybe a high eyebrow", said Small. "You associate the first thing that comes to mind. I think of the actor Warren Beatty so I create a mental picture of Warren Beatty kissing her brow". Small admits it may sound a bit strange but he says it works. "Mental exercises could be anything from doing crossword puzzles and writing with your left hand if you are right handed or learning a language. It could be anything that is fun that people enjoy doing", he added. He also recommends physical exercise, a low-fat diet and eating foods rich in fatty acids, such as fish, nuts, and fruits and vegetables high in antioxidants(抗氧化剂) including blueberries and onions in addition to reducing stress.第16题The "mad moments" in the first paragraph refers to the time when we______.A.don"t listen to our friendsB.have lost our important thingsC.have some mental problemsD.have a bad memory第17题In this passage, the author mainly tells us ______.A.everyone has bad memories sometimes no matter how old he isB.we can prevent our mind from aging with various methodsC.brain aging starts at the time when we are in the 20s and 30sD.memory lost is not the sign that we are getting old第18题By giving the example "you meet Mrs. Beatty and you notice a distinguishing.., eyebrow", Dr. Small is trying to explain the memory tool of______.A.lookB.physical exercisesC.connectD.mental exercises第19题By saying "I think of the actor Warren Beatty so I create…, he r brow", Dr. Small is trying to explain the memory tool of______.A.remembering facial featuresB.reducing stressC.connecting related thingsD.observing carefully第20题Mental exercises do NOT include______.A.writing with one"s left handB.learning a foreign languageC.doing crossword puzzlesD.taking pictures上一题下一题(21~25/共20题)阅读理解Astronaut Jim Voss has enjoyed many memorable moments in his career, including three space flights and one space walk. But he recalls with special fondness a decidedly earthbound(只在地球上的) experience in the summer of 1980 when he participated in the NASA-ASEE Summer Faculty Fellowship Program. Voss, then a science teacher at West Point was assigned to the Marshall Space Flight Center"s propulsion(推进) lab in Alabama to analyze why a hydraulic fuel pump seal on the space shuttle was working so well when previous seals had failed. It was a seemingly tiny problem among the vast complexities of running the space program` Yet it was important to NASA because any crack in the seal could have led to destructive results for the astronauts who relied on them. "I worked a bit with NASA engineers, "says Voss, "but I did it mostly by analysis. I used a handheld calculator, not a computer, to do a thermodynamic(热力学的) analysis. "At the end of the summer, he, like the other NASA-ASEE fellows working at Marshall summarized his findings in a formal presentation and detailed paper. It was a valuable moment for Voss because the ASEE program gave him added understanding of NASA, deepened his desire to fly in space, and intensified his application for astronaut status. It was not an easy process. Voss was actually passed over when he first applied for the astronaut program in 1987. Since then he has participated in three space mission. The 50-year-old Army officer, who lives in Houston, is now in training for a four-month mission as a crew member on the International Space Station starting in July 2000. Voss says the ASEE program is wonderful for all involved. "It brings in people from the academic world and gives NASA a special property for a particular period of time. It brings some fresh eyes and fresh ideas to NASA, and establishes a link with colleges and universities", Voss explains". There is an exchange of information and an exchange of perspectives that is very important". For the academic side, Voss says, the ASEE program also "brings institutions of higher learning more insight into new technology. We give them an opportunity to work on real-world problems and take it back to the classroom".第21题Why was the hydraulic fuel pump seal important for the space shuttle?A.Because previous seals all failed.B.Because it was very complex in running the space program.C.Because great care has to be taken of the hydraulic fuel pump sealing.D.Because any crack in the seals would cause disastrous results for astronauts.第22题The great significanee of Voss"s findings lies in______.I. strengthening his determination to join in space flights.Ⅱ. furthering his understanding of NASA.Ⅲ. consolidating his astronaut status in NASA programs。

Something else happened in the 1970's: the price of oil increasedtremendously, driving up the price of almost everything and making Americans aware that their large automobiles used a lot of gasoline. At the same time, foreign car manufacturers had begun to produce small fuel efficient cars in large quantities for the export market. Suddenly, the large, gas guzzling American cars were no longer attractive to American buyers, who began buying foreign cars by the thousands. The American automobile industry went into a recession. Thousands of automotive workers were laid off, as were thousands of people in industries indirectly connected with the auto industry. People who are laid off tend to keep what money they have for necessities, like food and housing. They do not have the extra money needed to send their children to college. Their children cannot pay their own college costs, because during a recession they cannot find jobs. High unemployment means that more state funds must be used for social service—unemployment benefits and to aid dependent children, for example—than during more prosperous times. It also means that the states have fewer funds than usual, because people are paying fewer taxes. Institutions of higher education depend on two major sources of income to keep them functioning: tuition from students and funds from the states. At the present time, there are fewer students than in the past and fewer state funds available for higher education. The colleges and universities are in trouble.第11题:What is the main idea of this passage?A.The rising of oil price drove up the price of everything.B.There were many reasons why higher education was in trouble in the 1970's.C.Birthrate began to decline in the USA in 1950's.D.High unemployment caused a lot of social problems.第12题:The phrase "laid off' can best be replaced by which of the following?A.Poor.B.Got rid of.C.Removed.D.Unemployed.第13题:American cars were not popular in their domestic markets because they were ______.A.smallB.gas consumingC.fuel efficientD.not attractive第14题:The colleges and universities were in trouble because of the following masons EXCEPT that ______.A.they couldn't get enough income to keep them runningB.young people couldn't afford the tuition feesC.keeping them running at the same level would cost much moreD.social services need more state funds because of the recession第15题:All of the following statements are true EXCEPT ______.A.young people couldn't afford their own tuition in the 1970'sB.it's difficult for graduates from colleges to find a job in the 1970'sC.fewer parents could afford to send their children to college because of the recession in 1970'sD.birthrate dropped in the 1970's because of the recessionPassage TwoAt some time in your life you may have a strong desire to do something strange or terrible. However, chances are that you don't act on your impulse, but let it pass instead. You know that to commit the action is wrong in some way and that other people will not accept your behavior.Perhaps the most interesting thing about the phenomenon of the behavior is how it can change over the years within the same society, how certain behavior and attitudes once considered taboo can become perfectly acceptable and natural at another point in time. Topics such as death, for example, were once considered so upsetting and unpleasant that it was a taboo to even talk about them. Now with the publication of important books such as On Death and Dying and Learning to Say Goodbye, people have become more aware of the importance of expressing feelings about death and, as a result, are more willing to talk about this taboo subject. One of the newest taboos in American society is the topic of fat. Unlike many other taboos, fat is a topic that Americans talk about constantly. It's not taboo to talk about fat; it's taboo to be fat. The "in" look is thin, not fat.In the work world, most companies prefer youthful-looking, trim executives to sell their image as well as their products to the public. The thin look is associated with youth, vigor and success. The fat person, on the other hand, is thought of as lazy and lacking in energy, self-respect. After all, people think, how can people who care about themselves, and therefore the way they look, permit themselves to become fat? In an image-conscious society like the U.S., thin is "in", fat is "out".第16题:According to the passage, we can infer that taboo is ______.A.a crime committed on impulseB.an unfavorable impression left on other peopleC.a behavior considered unacceptable by the publicD.a strong desire to do something strange or terrible第17题:Based on the ideas presented in the passage we can conclude that, in American society, "being fat" ______.A.has long been a tabooB.will always remain a tabooC.may no longer be a taboo somedayD.is not considered a taboo by most people第18题:Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A.Death is a taboo topic today.B.It is taboo to talk about fat.C.The topic of fat is different from many other taboo subjects.D.Fat is a topic that Americans talk about very little.第19题:In the U.S., the expression that thin is "in" and fat is "out" probably means ______.A.thin is "diligent" and fat is "lazy"B.thin is "fashionable" and fat is "unfashionable"C.thin is "inside" and fat is "outside"D.thin is "spiritless" and fat is "vigorous"第20题:In the last sentence of the passage, the phrase "image-conscious society" can be replaced by ______.A.very imaginative society with nice appearanceB.fast-developing society which is built on a clear imageC.the society whose image has been mined because of moneyD.the society in which image has been attached importance toPassage ThreeOn Thursday afternoon Mrs. Clarke dressed for going out, took her handbag with her money and her key in it, pulled the door behind her to lock it and went to the over 60s Club. She always went there on Thursdays. It was a nice outing for an old woman who lived alone. At six o'clock she came home, let herself in and at once smelt cigarette smoke. Cigarette smoke in her house? How? Had someone got in? She checked the back doorand the windows. All were locked or fastened, as usual. There was no sign of forced entry. Over a cup of tea she wondered whether someone might have a key that fitted her front door "a master key" perhaps. So she stayed at home the following Thursday. Nothing happened. Was anyone watching her movements? On the Thursday after that she went out at her usual time, dressed as usual, but she didn't go to the club. Instead she took a short cut home again, letting herself in through her garden and the back door. She settled down to wait. It was just after four o'clock when the front door bell rang. Mrs. Clarke was making a cup of tea at the time. The bell rang again, and then she heard her letter box being pushed open. With the kettle of boiling water in her hand, she moved quietly towards the front door. A long piece of wire appeared through the letter box, and then a hand. The wire turned and caught around the knob on the door lock. Mrs. Clarke raised the kettle and poured the water over the hand. There was a shout outside, and the skin seemed to drop off the fingers like a glove. The wire fell to the floor, the hand was pulled back, and Mrs. Clarke heard the sound of running feet.第21题:Mrs. Clarke looked forward to Thursday because ______.A.she worked at a club on ThursdayB.she had visitors on ThursdayC.she visited a club on ThursdayD.a special visitor came on Thursday第22题:If someone had made a forced entry ______.A.Mrs. Clarke would have found a broken door or windowB.he or she was still in the houseC.things would have been thrown aboutD.he or she would have needed a master key第23题:On the third Thursday Mrs. Clarke went out ______.A.because she didn't want to miss the club againB.to see if the thief was hanging about outsideC.to the club but then changed her mindD.in an attempt to trick the thief第24题:The lock on the front door was one which ______.A.needed a piece of wire to open itB.could be opened from outside without a keyC.couldn't be opened without a keyed a knob instead of a key第25题:The wire fell to the floor ______.A.because Mrs. Clarke refused to open the doorB.hen the man's glove dropped offC.because it was too hot to holdD.because the man just wanted to get awayPassage FourThere is evidence that the usual variety of high blood pressure is, in part, a familial disease. Since families have similar genes as well as similar environments, familial diseases could be due to shared genetic influences, to shared environmental factors, or to both. For some years, the role of one environmental factor commonly shared by families, namely dietary salt (i.e. sodium chloride), has been studies at Brook Haven National Laboratory. These studies suggest that frequent excess salt eating can lead to high blood pressure in man and animals. Some individuals, however, and some rats consume large amounts of salt without developing high blood pressure. No matter how strictly all environmental factors were controlled in these experiments, some salt-fed animals never developed high blood pressure whereas a few rapidly developed very serious high blood pressure followed by early death. These marked variations were interpreted to result from differences in genetic constitution.By mating in successive generations only those animals that failed to develop high blood pressure from salt eating, a resistant strain (the "R" strain) has been evolved in which consumption of large quantities of salt falls to influence the blood pressure significantly, in contrast, by mating only animals that quickly develop high blood pressure from salt, a sensitive strain ("S" strain) has also been developed. The availability of these two strains permits investigations not possible formerly. They provide a likely laboratory model on which to investigate some clinical (临床的) aspects of the human types of high blood pressure. More important, there might be the possibility of developing methods by which genetic likelihood of human beings to develop high blood pressure can be defined without waiting for its appearance. Radioactive (放射性的) sodium 22 was an important "tool" in working out the characteristics of the sodium chloride metabolism.第26题:The study of the effects of salt on high blood pressure was carried out ______.A.because members of the same family tend to used similar amounts of saltB.to explore the long-term use of a sodium-based substanceC.because it was proven that salt caused high blood pressureD.because of the availability of chemically pure salt第27题:It can be implied that the main difference between "S" and "R" strains is in their ______.A.need for sodium 22B.amount of salt intakeC.reaction to saltD.type of blood第28题:It is implied in the second paragraph that ______.A.a genetic factor is the main factor to develop high blood pressureB.amount of salt eating is an important factor to develop high blood pressureC.the rate to develop high blood pressure lies in the reaction to saltD.high blood pressure can be affected by mating第29题:Among the results of the research discussed in this passage, the most beneficial might be ______.A.development of diets free of saltB.the early identification of potential high blood pressure victimsC.an early cure for high blood pressureD.control of genetic agents that cause high blood pressure第30题:We can infer from the passage that ______.A.when salt is added to their diets, rats and human beings act in the same wayB.the near future will see a cure for high blood pressureC.the medical field is desperately in need of researchD.a tendency toward high blood pressure may be a genetic factor完型填空Many people wrongly believe that when people reach old age, their families place them in nursing homes. They are left in the hands of strangers for the rest of their lives. Their__31__children visit them only occasionally, but more often, they do not have any__32__visitors. The truth is that this idea is an unfortunate myth imaginary story. In fact, family members provide over 80 percent of the care__33__elderly people need. He reported that by the time the__35__American couple reaches40 years of age, they have more parents than children.__36__because people today live longer after an illness than people did years ago, family members must provide long term care. More psychologists have found that all caregivers share a common characteristic: All caregivers believe that they are the best people for the job. In other words, they all felt that they__37__do the job better than anyone else. Social workers interviewed caregivers to find out why they took on the responsibility of caring for an elderly relative. Many caregivers believed they had__38__to help their relative. Green building can also refer to environmentally friendly houses, factories, and offices. Buildings account for 65 percent of total U.S. electricity use. But green buildings can reduce energy and water use. Also, the buildings are often located near public transportation such as buses and subways, so that people can drive their cars less. That could be good for the environment, because cars use lots of natural resources such as gasoline, and give off pollution. Green buildings are often built on previously developed land, so that the buildings don"t destroy forests or other wild habitats(栖息地). Malty Dettling is a project manager for a building that puts these ideas into action. The Solaire has been called the country"s first green residential high-rise building. According to Dettling, "We"ve reduced our energy consumption by one-third and our water by 50 percent". Not everyone is leaping to move into a green building, however. Some people think that features such as solar panels cost more money than more traditional energy sources. Despite this, Dettling hopes that green buildings will become common in the future. "It"s going to be big", she said.第11题What does green building refer to nowadays?A.Buildings painted by green hands.B.Buildings covered with green plants.C.Buildings that are environmentally-friendly.D.Buildings like houses, factories, and offices.第12题The word "Also"(Line 2, Para. 2) is used to ______.A.continue the discussion of total U.S. electricity useB.expand the topic of reduction of energy and water useC.include the discussion of public transportationD.shift the focus to the topic of the environment protection第13题In terms of land use, green buildings are constructed by ______.A.making use of developed landB.developing new landC.clearing the ground in a forestD.draining wild habitats第14题Why are some people not so enthusiastic about green buildings?A.Because they do not jump into green building.B.Because they fail to move into a green building.C.Because they find it more costly to live in a green building.D.Because they think that solar panels still cost too much.第15题What did Marty Dettling mean when she said, "It"s going to be big?"A.Green buildings have a great potential.B.People expect bigger green buildings.C.Green buildings will be larger in size.D.People prefer to live in bigger buildings.上一题下一题Theme-park-bound bargain seekers would be wise to spend some time surfing online before they get in line at the parks this summer. A growing number of these attractions now allow customers to print e-tickets at home with large discounts off the gate price, in part to spur attendance that has declined in recent years. After boom times in the late 1990s, theme park attendance began to decrease, with an overall decline of about 40% over the past few years at North America"s 50 most-visited establishments, says James Zoitak, editor of Amusement Business. "The boom was off the rose as we turned the comer into 2000, so there"s more discounting now", he says. Discounting isn"t new to an industry that has longer partnered with other commercial enterprises, such as soft drink companies, to offer deals. But e-ticketing adds a new opportunity that not only brings savings but convenience as well, since it allows visitors to avoid the line at the gate. "If you can get in early before the lines fill up, you"re getting more for your money", says Robert Niles of the website Theme Park Insider.第16题The word "attractions"(Line 1, Para. 2) refers to ______.A.theme parksB.bargainsC.e-ticketsD.discounts第17题Why do more and more theme parks offer large discounts off the gate price?A.To get in line at the parks this summer.B.To encourage more people to come to the parks.C.To enable people to get e-tickets at home.D.To reduce the attendance figure.第18题What does the sentence "The boom was off the rose" mean?A.The rose in the theme park was out of bloom.B.The year 2000 was lucky for the 50 establishments.C.The theme park attendance was like the rose.D.The best time for the theme parks was gone.第19题What is the new opportunity e-ticketing brings to the theme parks?A.The theme park industry will be more profitable.B.Soft drink companies will be better partners of the parks.C.The tour to the parks will be more convenient.D.Visitors to the parks will have more discounts.第20题The last sentence of this passage is based on the idea that ______.A.it is wise to surf onlineB.discounting isn"t everythingC.e-ticketing attracts more partnersD.time is money上一题下一题One thing almost everyone is agreed on, including Americans, is that they place a very high valuation upon success; Success does not necessarily mean material rewards, but recognition of some sort-preferably measurable. If a boy turns out to be a preacher(传道者) instead of a businessman, that"s all right. But the bigger his church is, the more successful he is judged to be.A good many things contributed to this accent on success. A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents"principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment.第11题Eagerly watching the child"s acquisition of new skills______.A.should be avoidedB.is universal among parentsC.sets up dangerous states of worry in the childD.will make him lose interest in learning new things第12题In the process of children"s learning new skills parents______.A.should encourage them to read before they know the meaning of the words they readB.should not expect too much of themC.should achieve a balance between pushing them too hard and leaving them on their ownD.should create as many learning opportunities as possible第13题The second paragraph mainly tells us that______.A.parents should be strict with their childrenB.parental controls reflect only the needs of the parents and the values of the communityC.parental restrictions vary, and are not always enforced for the benefit of the children aloneD.parents vary in their strictness towards their children according to the situation第14题The word "precept"(Para. They fear that"assembly-line life" will lead to the disappearance of the pleasures of the more graceful and leisurely old French style.

Beauty is only skin-deep. One's physical assets and liabilities don't count all that much in a managerial career.A woman should always try to look her best.Over the last 30 years, social scientists 'have conducted morethan 1,000 studies of how we react to beautiful and not-so-beautiful people. The virtually unanimous conclusion: Looks do matter, more than most of us realize: The data suggest, for example, that physically attractive individuals are more likely to be treated well by their parents, sought out as friends, and pursued romantically. With the possible exception of women seeking managerial jobs, they are also more likely to be hired, paid well, and promoted.Un-American, you say, unfair and extremely unbelievable? Once again, the scientists have caught us mouthing pieties (虔诚)while acting just the contrary. Their typical experiment works something like this. They give each member of a group-college students, perhaps, or teachers or corporate personnel managers a piece of paper relating an individual's accomplishments. Attached to the paper is a photograph. While the papers all say exactly the same thing the pictures are different. Some show a strikingly attractive person, some an average-looking character, and some an unusually unattractive human being. Group members are asked to rate the individual on certain attributes, anything from personal warmth to the likelihood that he or she will be promoted.Almost invariably, the better looking the person in the picture, the higher the person is rated. In the phrase, borrowed from Sappho, that the social scientists use to sum up the common perception, what is beautiful is good.In business, however, good looks cut both ways for women, and deeper than for men. A Utah State University professor, who is an authority on the subject, explains: In terms of their careers, the impact of physical attractiveness on males is only modest. But its potential impact on females can be tremendous, making its easier, for example, for the more attractive to get jobs where they are in the public .eye. On another note, though, there is enough literature now for us to conclude that attractive women who aspire to managerial positions do not get on as well as women who may be less attractive.第11题:According to the passage, people often wrongly believe that in pursuing a career as manager ______.A.a person's property or debts do not matter muchB.a person's outward appearance is not a critical qualificationC.women should always dress fashionablyD.women should not only be attractive but also high-minded第12题:The result of research carried out by social scientists show that ______.A.people do not realize the importance of looking one's bestB.women in pursuit of managerial jobs are not likely to be paid wellC.good-looking women aspire to managerial positionsD.attractive people generally have an advantage over those who are not第13题:Experiments by scientists have shown that when people evaluate individuals on certain attributes ______.A.they observe the principle that beauty is only skin-deepB.they do not usually act according to the views they supportC.they give ordinary-looking persons the lowest ratingsD.they tend to base their judgment on the individual's accomplishments第14题:"Good looks out both ways for women" (Line 1, Para. 5) means that ______.A.attractive women have tremendous potential impact on public jobsB.good-looking women always get the best of everythingC.being attractive is not always an advantage for womenD.attractive women do not do as well as unattractive women in managerial positions第15题:It can inferred from the passage that in the business world ______.A.handsome men are not affected as much by their looks as attractive women areB.physically attractive women who are in the public eye usually do quite wellC.physically attractive men and women who are in the public eye usually get along quite wellD.good looks are important for women as they are for menIt's the same up-to-the-minute news and information that more than 300,000 financial professionals use each day to make investment decisions and stay ahead of market changes. Some experts claim the answer is to make jobs more varied. But do more varied jobs lead to greater productivity? The evidence shows that while variety certainly makes the worker's life more enjoyable, it does not actually make him work harder. As far as increasing productivity is concerned, then, variety is not an important factor.Other experts feel that giving the worker freedom to do his job in his own way is important. There is no doubt that this is true. The problem is that this kind of freedom cannot easily be given in the modern factory with its complicated machinery which must be used in a fixed way. Thus, although freedom of choice may be important, usually very little can be done to create it.Another important consideration is how much a worker contributes to the product he is making. In most factories the worker sees only one small part of the product. Some car factories are now experimenting with having many small production lines rather than a large one, so that each worker contributes more to the production of the cars on his line. It would seem that not only is degree of the worker's contribution an important factor, therefore, but it is also one we can do something about. To what extent does more money lead to greater productivity? The workers themselves certainly think this is important. But perhaps they want more money only because the work they do is so boring. Money just lets them enjoy their spare time more. A similar argument may explain demands for shorter working hours. Perhaps if we make their jobs more interesting, they will want neither more money nor shorter working hours. 第21题:Varied jobs, in writer's opinion, will ______.A.offer greater productivityB.drive workers to work harderC.make workers more productiveD.make worker's life more enjoyable, but do not make them more hardworking第22题:According to the passage, freedom can not be easily given since ______.A.it is in not what workers care aboutB.it has nothing to do with increasing productivityC.freedom will do harm to the managementD.machines in modem factories must be organized in a fixed way第23题:Degree of the worker's contribution is greater when ______.A.a factory possesses more expertsB.a factory has many small production linesC.workers enjoy more freedomD.workers work at a large production line第24题:Workers want more money and shorter working hours to ______.A.enjoy themselves more after workB.produce greater work flowC.show their great abilitiesD.challenge the management第25题:According to the passage, the statement that best describes the writer's attitude is ______.A.there are no ways to make workers more productiveB.workers want more variety, freedom and money, but shorter working time and less contributionC.variety, freedom, contribution, more money and shorter working time seem possible factors leading to greater productivity, actually they are not or they are impossibleD.it is impossible to make workers work more productively, because the work they do is so boringMost episodes of absent-mindedness——forgetting where you left something or wondering why you just entered a room--are caused by a simple lack of attention, says Schacter. "You're supposed to remember something, but you haven't encoded it deeply."Encoding, Schacter explains, is a special way of paying attention to an event that has a major impact on recalling it later. Failure to encode properly can create annoying situations. If you put your mobile phone in a pocket, for example, and don't pay attention to what you did because you're involved in a conversation, you'll probably forget that the phone is in the jacket now hanging in your wardrobe(衣柜). "Your memory itself isn't failing you," says Schacter. "Rather, you didn't give your memory system the information it needed."Lack of interest can also lead to absent-mindedness. "A man who can recite sports statistics from 30 years ago," says Zelinski, "may not remember to drop a letter in the mailbox." Women have slightly better memories than men, possibly because they pay more attention to their environment, and memory relies on just that.Visual cues can help prevent absent-mindedness, says Schacter. "But be sure the cue is clear and available," he cautions. If you want to remember to take a medication (药物) with lunch, put the pill bottle on the kitchen table——don't leave it in the medicine chest and write yourself a note that you keep in a pocket.Another common episode of absent-mindedness, walking into a room and wondering why you're there. Most likely, you were thinking about something else. "Everyone does this from time to time" says Zelinski. The best thing to do is to return to where you were before entering the room and you'll likely remember.第26题:Why does the author think that encoding properly is very important? ______.A.It helps us understand our memory system betterB.It enables us to recall something from our memoryC.It expands our memory capacity considerablyD.It slows down the process of losing our memory第27题:One possible reason why women have better memories than men is that______.A.they have a wider range of interestsB.they are more reliant on the environmentC.they have an unusual power of focusing their attentionD.they are more interested in what's happening around them第28题:A note in the pocket can hardly serve as a reminder because______.A.it will easily get lostB.it's not clear enough for you to readC.it's out of your sightD.it might get mixed up with other things第29题:What do we learn from the last paragraph? ______.A.If we focus our attention on one thing, we might forget anotherB.Memory depends to a certain extent on the environmentC.Repetition helps improve our memoryD.If we keep forgetting things, we'd better return to where we were第30题:What is the passage mainly about? ______.A.The process of gradual memory lossB.The causes of absent-mindednessC.The impact of the environment on memoryD.A way of encoding and recalling完型填空How does water scarcity affect people?
