A
A growing number of small companies are starting to have a four-day workweek. Now, the results of a recent test at Microsoft suggested that it could even work for some larger companies. This summer, Microsoft introduced a program in Japan called the “Work Life Choice Challenge”. In the program, the offices were closed every Friday in August. And it gave all workers one more day off.
The results were promising. Although people spent less time on work, their productivity (工作效率) went up by nearly 40% compared with the same period last year. With fewer working hours, managers also requested workers to cut down the time they spent on meetings and replying to emails.
They suggested that meetings should be no more than 30 minutes. Workers were also encouraged to use online messages instead of attending meetings. More than 90% of workers at Microsoft in Japan said they loved the new measure (措施). By closing earlier each week, the company could also save more electricity.
This measure is very timely. Japan has been dealing with the problem of overwork for a long time. The country has even created a new word to describe it: karoshi. It means people die from illnesses caused by too much work stress.
Many people in Japan went through karoshi and several even died of it. It has led to companies offering more flexible (灵活的) working time to their workers. The government has a new program called “Premium Friday”, which encourages workers to leave earlier every last Friday of the month.
