There are 5 tasks for you to fulfill. You should read the reading materials carefully and do the tasks as you are instructed.Task 1Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find 5 questions or unfinished statements, numbered 36 through 40. For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked A, B, C, and D. You should make the correct choice. You'd think Pauline Hord would have served her time by now. After all, she recently celebrated her 90th birthday, and by the time she achieved that breathtaking(激动人心的) milestone, she'd already done a 10-year stretch in the Mississippi State Prison.Ms. Hord is a sweet-natured, gentle-talking, white-haired Southerner who never owed a debt to society—thus, she never had to pay one. So you have to wonder what a woman like this is doing in a place where most people are itching to get loose. Unlike the rest of the population, Ms. Hord goes to prison freely and eagerly. And when she gets there, she persuades prisoners of every sort to sing little ditties(短歌谣) about their ABCs and XYZs.At age 80, Ms. Hord began teaching prisoners to read during a chance visit to the State Prison with a lawyer friend. "When I got there, I heard that a group of volunteer workers had been praying for a teacher. They asked me if I **e and I said I would be thrilled(非常激动的)," she said.On a personal level, Ms. Hord considers this rewarding work. "If you get at the reason why these men went into crime, you will find that none of them succeeded in their early years of schooling. They went to school at 5 believing they were going to learn to read. When they didn't learn in the first or second grade, they realized something was wrong. By 8, they were having problems. By 12 or 13, they were drinking or using drugs. And it's getting worse. I'm seeing younger and younger prisoners who know less and less. They can't read well enough to function in this society," she said.It is this situation that Ms. Hord goes to prison week after week to correct. And when her most difficult students finally begin to read, she is sure that she, too, knows why the caged birds sing.36. Ms. Hord goes to prison eagerly to______.A. sing songs for the prisonersB. teach the prisoners to readC. pray for the prisonersD. make friends with the prisoners37. Judging from the context, "itching"(Line 3, Para. 2) most probably means "______".A. afraidB. unwillingC. reluctantD. eager38. According to Ms. Hord, the root of crimes lies in______.A. racial discriminationB. poor living conditionsC. lack of proper educationD. addiction to alcohol or drugs39. Which of the following statements can be inferred from the passage?A. Many people volunteered to join Ms. Hord in her work.B. Most of the prisoners had no desire to learn as a child.C. Ms. Hord found it impossible to teach some prisoners.D. Ms. Hord took up her volunteer job by chance.40. Ms. Hord regarded her job as______.A. uniqueB. valuableC. interestingD. toughTask 2Directions:This task is the same as Task 1.The 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 41 through 45."Avoid the rush-hour" must be the slogan of large cities all over the world. Wherever you look, it's people, people, people. The streets are so crowded that there is hardly room to move: when a bus arrives, it's so full that it can't take any more passengers. The extraordinary thing is not that people put up with these conditions, but that they actually choose them in preference to anything else.Large modern cities are too big to control. They impose their own living conditions on the people who inhabit them. It is possible to live such an air-conditioned existence in a large city that you are barely conscious of the seasons. What is going on in nature seems totally irrelevant. Even the distinction between day and night is lost. The funny thing about it all is that you pay dearly for the "privilege" of living in a city. The demand for accommodation is so great that high rents must be paid for tiny flats which even country hens would scorn(不屑于接受) to live in. Accommodation apart, the cost of living is very high. Just about everything you buy is likely to be more expensive than it would be in the country. In addition to all these, city inhabitants live under constant threats. The crime rate in most cities is very high. If you think about it, they're not really fit to live in at all. Can anyone really doubt that the country is what man was born for and where he truly belongs?41. It can be learned from the first paragraph that______.A. city inhabitants can not take buses in rush hoursB. city inhabitants can not bear the traffic conditions of citiesC. city inhabitants pay more attention to traffic conditionsD. city inhabitants are willing to bear the bad traffic conditions42. In the passage, the author mentions all these things EXCEPT______.A. bad traffic conditionsB. lack of securityC. pollution caused by air-conditionersD. the high cost of living43. We can infer that the word "it"(Line 2, Para. 4) refers to______.A. the high crime rate in most citiesB. the disadvantage of living in citiesC. the advantage of living in citiesD. the constant threat44. The main idea of this passage is that______.A. there are many disadvantages of living in citiesB. people's preference for living in cities is reasonableC. the living conditions of cities are worse than those of countriesD. measures should be taken to improve the living conditions in cities45. What is the author's attitude towards living in cities?A. Unconcerned.B. Critical.C. Sympathetic.D. Envious.Task 3Directions:The following is a passage. After reading it,you are required to complete the blanks below it(No.46 through No.50).You should write your answers briefly in no more than three words. When you are writing business letters, you need to notice the following tips:Limit Them to One PageBy definition, business letters should be short and to the point, preferably one page in length. Each passage is followed by five questions or unfinished statements. Fro each question, there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should chose the best answer. Then mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with asingle line through the center.Passage oneIt is often difficult for visitors to understand Am ericans’ lack of desire for privacy. They are not a nation of walled gardens and closed gates. Their yards usually run into one another withoutany fence; they often visit one another’house without being invited or telephoning first; they leave their office doors open while they work.Their lack of desire for privacy probably results from their history as a nation. America is a big country. There have never been walled cities in the United States, nor was there the need for Americans to protect themselves from neighbouring states. During the early years, America had sofew settlers that neighbours were very important; they were not to be shut by doors and fences. Neighbours offered protection and helped with the hard work of settling the land. They dependedupon each other. From the nation’ s early history has come the desire for openness rather than privacy. Visitors will notice this desire in a number of small ways; there may be rooms in American homes that donot have doors or that have glass walls. If you notice that people forget to close your door whenthey leave your room, do not think that this is rude, help them to learn that you would like it to be closed, or else become accustomed to new ways. In either case, be patient with the differences .33. According to the passage, visitors to America sometimes have trouble understanding _____.A. American ’ s opennessB. American ’ s lack of desire for privacyC.American ’ s way of humor D. American ’ s style of life34.Which of the following is true?A.. People walled their yards with fences.B. The settlers in the early years needed neighbour’ s help very much.C. People get used to American’ s openness.35. During the early years, people were never shut out by doors because _____.A. they were neighboursB. they were friendsC. they depended upon each otherD. they got accustomed to that36. Visitors will notice American’ s desire for openness in a way _____.A. they walled their house with glass37.Which is the best title for this passage?A.No Walled Cities.B.The Early SettlersC.American ’ s Lack of Desire for PrivacyD.Be Patient with DifferencesPassage 2The murder took place around ten o'clock p.m. on June 10. Thirty-two people watched Kitty being killed right beneath their windows. She was their neighbour. Yet, none of the 32 helped her. Not even one called the police. Was this inhuman cruelty( 狠心 )? Was it lack of feeling for one's fellow man?“ Not so,” say scientists Dr. Darley and Dr. Fatane. They've found the reasons why people don'tact. According to them, a person has to go through two steps before he can help. First he has to noticethere is an emergency(紧迫状况 ).Suppose you see a middle-aged man fall onto the ground. Is he having a heart attack, or someother physical trouble? Or is he simply about to sleep off a drunk( 醉酒 )? So it's not always easy to tell if you are faced with a real emergency.Second and more important, the person faced with an emergency must feel himself responsible. He must feel that he must help. The researchers found that a lot depends on how many people are around. They asked collegestudents to come in to be “ tested”. Some came alone, some with one or two others, and some in large groups. When they came in, either alone, in pairs, or in groups, a lady went into the next room. Soon the students heard a scream, the noise of something falling and a cry for help. All of this had been pre-recorded on a tape-recorder.Eight out of ten of the students taking the test alone acted to help. Of the students in pairs, only two out of ten helped. Of the students in groups, none helped. In other words, in a group, American often fail to act. They feel that others will act. They, themselves, needn't. They do not feel any direct responsibility.38. Why didn't the thirty-two people act to help Kitty according to the passage?A. Because they were afraid to be killed.B. Because they were cruel in their hearts.C. Because they thought others would help.D. Because they didn't notice the emergency.39. Which of the following is an emergency?A. Someone is falling onto the ground.B. Someone is having a heart attack.C. Someone is having a trouble.D. Someone is sleeping off a drunk.40. When a person notice an emergency, he must _____ before he acts to help.A. feel himself responsibleB. call the policeC. hear a cry for helpD. be with a group41.The result of the tests shows that _____.A.the more people there are together, the more people will act to helpB.college students would be more likely to help than ordinary AmericansC.the more people there are together, the fewer people will act to helpD.none of the tested students acted to help42.Americans don't _____ in a group.A. notice an emergencyB. go through two steps before they actC. depend on each otherD. feel direct responsibilityPassage 3The greatest changes have been in the lives of women. During the twenties century there hasbeen a remarkable shortening of the time of woman’ s life spent in caring for children. A woman marrying at the end of the nineteenth century would probably have been in her middle twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four or five live till they were fiveyears old. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fiftiesand would expect to live a further twenty years, during which health made it unusual for her to getpaid work. Today women marry younger and have fewer children. Usually a woman’ s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and can be expected to live another thirty years and islikely to take paid work until retirement at sixty. Even while she has the care of children, her workis lightened by modern living conditions. This important change in women’ s life pattern has only recently begun to have its fullct effeon women ’ s economic positionEven. a few years ago most girls left school at the first chance, andmost of them took a full time job. However, when they married, they usually left work at once andnever return to it. Today the school-leaving age is sixteen, many girls stay at school after that age,and though women usually marry younger, more married women stay at least until shortly beforetheir first child is born. Very many more afterwards return to full or part-time job. Such changeshave led to a new relationship in marriage, with the husband accepting a greater share of the dutiesand satisfactions of family life, and with both husband and wife sharing more equally in providingthe money, and running the house, according to the abilities and interests of each of them.43.According to the passage, around the year 1900 most women married _____.A.at about twenty fiveB.in their early fiftiesC.as soon as possible after they were fifteenD.at any age from fifteen to forty-five44.We are told that in a common family in 1890s _____.A. seven or eight children lived to be more than fiveB. many children died before they were fiveC. the youngest child would be fifteenD. four or five children died when they were five45.When she was over fifty, the late nineteenth century mother _____.A.would be healthy enough to take part paid jobsB.was usually expected to die fairly soonC.was unlikely to find a job if she wanted oneD.would expect to work till she died46.According to the passage, the women of today usually _____.A. marry instead of getting paid workB. marry before they are twenty-fiveC. have more children under fifteenD. have too few children47. The best title for this passage is _____.A. Women ’ s lifeB. The Change of Women’ s LifeC. Women’ s MarriageD. Women’ s New LifePassage 4Advertising can be thought of "as the means of making known in order to buy or sell goods or services". Advertising aims to increase people's awareness and arouse interest. It tries to inform and to persuade. The media are all used to spread the message, and the press offers a fairly cheap method. Magazines are used to reach special sections of the market. The cinema and commercial radio are useful for local markets. Television, although more expensive, can be very effective. Posters are fairly cheap and more permanent in their power of attraction. Other ways of increasing consumer interest are through exhibitions and trade fairs as well as direct mail advertising. We might ask whether the cost of advertising is paid for by the manufacturer or by the consumer. Since advertising forms part of the cost of production, which has to be covered by the selling price,it is clear that it is the customer who pays for advertising. However, if large scale advertising leadsto increased demand, production costs are reduced, and the customer pays less.It is difficult to measure exactly the influence of advertising on sales. When the market is growing, advertising helps to increase demand. When the market is shrinking, advertising may prevent a bigger fall in scales than would occur without its support. What is clear is that businesses would not pay large sums for advertising if they were not convinced of its value to them.48. Advertising is often used to _____.A. convince customersB. promote productionC. raise interestD. push the sales49. . According to the passage, trade fairs (Paragraph 1) may _____.A. replace exhibitions and marketsB. supply local goods and servicesC. attract possible customersD. provide cheap amusements50. Advertising is in the main paid for by _____.A. the customerB. the producerC. the increased salesD. the decreased costs51. The author says that advertising can increase demand _____.A. in any period of salesB. in any circumstancesC. in a growing marketD. in a shrinking market52.What the last sentence of this passage actually tells us is that _____.A.businessmen usually do not pay more for advertising than they have toB.businessmen know well that advertising could bring them more profitsC.advertising couldn't convince people of the value of the goodsD.advertising usually costs businessmen large amounts of moneyPart IV: Translation from English into Chinese (10%)Directions: In this part, there are four items which you should translate into Chinese, each itemconsisting of one sentence. However, what are the actual benefits and disadvantages of distance education? Potential benefits:The most obvious reasons for trying to get an online degree are time and money. With an online course, you can join a class, do assignments on the internet, and even communicate with classmates in chat rooms or on bulletin boards.Technology has even reached the point where students can interact with other students and the teacher through high-quality web conferencing. All of these activities can be done from the comfort of your home or laptop: any time, any place. Second, getting such a degree can, in some cases, be cheaper because you don’t have to pay costs related to an oversea adventure: air-tickets, housing, local transportation, etc. Potential disadvantages: For all these benefits, there are a number of disadvantages to this kind of learning. Above all else, you have to consider how a degree from an online school will be received by future employers because they might feel that the academic standards of such an online institution are not as high as a regular program. Second, you probably won’t have face-to-face contact with other students since everything is online. Such contact is very important in learning how to deal with many aspects of non-verbal communication that aren’t obvious in an online chat room.21.It is possible to get an online degree thanks to ____.A.the increasing distance of educationB.the improvement of personal computersC.the available option of technologiesD.the worldwide use of the Internet正确答案:D22.An online degree course allows you to _____.A.avoid disadvantages in learningB.meet fellow students in the classroomC.enjoy adventures abroadD.communicate with teachers and classmates正确答案:D23.The number-one disadvantage of getting an online degree is that _____.A.the course may take a long time to completeB.the degree may be less useful for finding a jobC.the study may provide little face to face contactD.the program may lower the academic standards正确答案:B24.The word “non-verbal”in the second line of the last paragraph means _____.A.not using wordsB.relating to wordsC.without actionD.not having verbs正确答案:A25.Which of the following could be the best title for the passage?A.Some suggestions for Getting an Online Degree.B.Advantages and Disadvantages of an Online Degree.C.An Analysis on Weaknesses of Distance Learning.D.A Comparison between Online and Regular Education.正确答案:BSales promotion is the process of persuading a potential customer to buy the product. However, you can’t ignore that there is some truth in the statement when it comes to looking for a job. In fact, the U.S. Department of Labor estimates that 48 percent of all job opportunities are made through personal networking. So the real question for job seekers is how to take advantage of this phenomenon. Positioning yourself to take the advantage of the benefits of networking is not that difficult. It only requires participation in social and business events, particularly those that relate to your professional objectives. It’s a three-step process: first, choosing a promising event to attend; second, once there, making sure you get your massage out; and third, sending a resume after a positive conversation. The ready-made social situations created by professional associations are obvious places to network. Almost every professional association portrays itself as a networking vehicle for matching jobs with prospective candidates. If you do not belong to a professional group, the act of joining one will get you in the door. Once inside, you have the opportunity to meet many influential people. Dress codes range from formal to business casual to casual. The formality of a dress code is normally determined by the number and type of interactions employees have with customers or clients. In workplaces that are visited often by clients, dress is often formal. These include law offices, banks, and most large businesses. However, even these organizations are relaxing their dress codes. For example, banking giant JPMorgan Chase now allows its employees to wear business casual most of the time. Tech firms and start-ups generally favour casual dress. Depending on the organization, the dress code may be written in great detail, and in the case of a casual dress code, very little detail is necessary.Text BAdopting a dress code policy offers clear advantages to a company.➢It creates important first impressions for clients. What you wear can have a powerful effect on how other people feel, think and behave towards you.➢It helps to build a solid reputation for you and the company brand. Clients will have confidence that employees of the company they are dealing with will conduct themselves in an acceptable way.➢ A dress code policy exhibits professionalism.➢It promotes respect between employees and clients as well as among employees.➢It prevents competition among co-workers for the best fashion trends and focuses employees on work, keeping business as business.➢It helps employees to appreciate how to dress to reflect the company’s culture and values.Text CQuestions 16-20Choose the five statements from A-G in the box that are TRUE according to the texts above.16. __________17. __________18. __________19. __________20. __________ A. Small talk might seem to be unimportant, but it’s actually vital across all types of industries, businesses and networks. It plays a major role in forming social cohesion that makes interaction possible and builds trust. To enjoy and take full advantage of small talk, we must truly understand it.Paragraph 2Small talk is the common term for a conversation about light and unimportant matters. It’s a friendly dialogue about a common topic. It’s a way of conversing with someone you’ve only just met, are meeting for a short amount of time – at a conference, for example – or don’t know very well.Paragraph 3Small talk can be about almost any matter in the world, so long as its subject is appropriate. Topics such as the weather, weekend plans, and sports are all acceptable small talk subjects. Unacceptable small talk subjects that could be considered rude or inappropriate should be avoided at all costs, as they can damage business relationships and cause one to be fired from his or her position. T opics involving violence and racist matters are common examples of unacceptable small talk subjects.Paragraph 4Subjects like politics, hot issues, and per sonal preferences aren’t necessarily unacceptable in small talk, but should better be avoided, as they can easily result in disagreement and conflict. And as many of you know, confrontation is best avoided in business!Paragraph 5If small talk is appropriate and welcomed by both parties involved, it can help to improve relationships and the productivity of business talk, and allow business professionals to have a little bit of fun. One should be sure not to spend too much time on small talk, however, or there won’t be enough time left for professional conversation!Questions 21-25 Read the passage and choose the best heading for each paragraph from the list in the box.
