(阅读理解题)Many visitors finds the fast pace at which American people move very troubling. One’s first impression is likely to be that everyone is in a rush. City people always appear to be hurrying to get where they are going and are very impatient if they are delayed even for a brief moment. At first, this may seem unfriendly to you. Drivers will rush you; storekeepers will be in a hurry as they serve you; people will push past you as they walk along the street. You will miss smiles, brief conversations with people as you shop or dine away from home. Do not think that because Americans are in such a hurry they are unfriendly. Often, life is much slower outside the big cities, as is true in other countries as well. Americans who live in cities such as New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles, often think that everyone is equally in a hurry to get things done; they expect others to “push back”, just as city people do in Tokyo, Singapore or Paris, for example. But when they discover that you are a stranger, most Americans become quite kindly and will take great care to help you. Many of them first came to the city as strangers and they remember how frightening a new city can be .If you need help orwant to ask a question, choose a friendly looking person and say, “I am a stranger here. Can you help me?”Most people will stop, smile at you, and help you find you way or answer your questions. But you must let them know that you need help. (阅读理解题)Many people think that when they become rich and successful, happiness will naturally follow. Let me tell you that nothing is further from the truth. The world is full of very richpeople who are as miserable as if they were living in hell. We have read stories about movie stars who committed suicide or died from drugs. Quite clearly, money is not the only answer to all problems. Wealth obtained through dishonest means does not bring happiness. Lottery winnings do not bring happiness. Gambling winnings do not bring happiness. To my mind, the secret to happiness lies in your successful work, in your contribution towards others’ happiness and in your wealth you have earned through your own honest effort. If you obtain wealth through luck or dishonest means, you will know that it is ill-earned money. If you get your money by taking advantage of others or by hurting others, you will not be happy with it. You will think you are a base person. Long-term happiness is based on honesty, productive work, contribution, and self-esteem. Happiness is not an end; it is a process. It is a continuous process of honest, productive work which makes a real contribution to others and makes you feel you are a useful, worthy person. As Dr. Wayne wrote, “There is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way.” There is no use saying “Someday when I achieve these goals, when I get a car, build a house and own my own business, then I will be really happy.” Life just does not work that way. If you wait for certain things to happen and depend on external circumstances of life tomake you happy, you will always feel unfulfilled. There will always be something missing.(1). It was not a sudden and violent overturning of the political and social framework, such as later occurred in France and Russia, when both were already independent nations. Significant changes were ushered in, but they werenot breathtaking. What happened was accelerated evolution rather than outright revolution. During the conflict itself people went on working and praying, marrying and playing. Most of them were notseriously disturbed by the actual fighting, and many of the moreisolated communities scarcely knew that a war was on.America’s War of independence heralded the birth of three modern nations. One was Canada, which received its first large influx (涌入) of English-speaking population from the thousands of loyalists whofled there from the United States. Another was Australia, which became a penal colony now that Americawas no longer available for prisoners and debtors. The third newcomer----the United States-based itself squarely on republican principles.Yet even the political overturn was not so revolutionary as one might suppose. In some states, notable Connecticut and Rhode Island, the war largely ratified (批准,认可) a colonial self-rule already existing. British officials, everywhere ousted (驱逐), were replaced by a homegrown governing class, which promptly sought a local substitute for king and Parliament.Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage:31.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A)The United States: An isolated CommunityB)Breathtaking Events during the American RevolutionC)Canada and the American war of IndependenceD)The American Revolution: Evolution Not Revolution32. In the first paragraph, what does the author suggest about the French and Russian Revolutions?A)They were explosive and abrupt.B)They were ineffective.C)They involved only those people living in urban areas.D)They led to the release of all political prisoners.33. In line 7 what does the author mean by “people went on working and praying, marrying and playing”?A)More people got married than divorced.Part II. Reading Comprehension (40%)装订线内不要答题《大学英语(II)》试卷本卷共12页第3页《大学英语(II)》试卷本卷共12页第4页B)The war created new jobs.C)Life went on as usual.D)People had more than enough leisure time.34. In the second paragraph, the author states that the colonies struggle for self-government preceded thecreation of all of the following countries EXCEPT_____.A) Canada B) the United States C) Australia D) the United Kingdom35. It can be inferred from the passage that the loyalists who escaped to Canada were _____.A) Russian B) French C) British D) AustralianPassage TwoSome of the most beautiful caves are formed in glaciers (冰川). Streams of melting ice and snow tunnel through the glaciers the same way that water from a faucet melts its way through an ice cube. Water from the surface drips down through cracks, hollowing out the tunnels and decorating the caves with crystal icicles. The smooth walls and floorsare so glasslike that pebbles frozen six feet deep can easily be seen. Crystal-clear icicles draping from the ceilings flash blue-green, as though they were carved from precious jewels instead of ice. Although most of the cave ice in the United States is found in lava caves, there are a number of limestone ice caves as well. Some people believe thatthis ice was formed thousands of years ago, when temperatures were much colder than they are today. Others think that the cave ice broke offfrom the ancient glaciers as they spread over the country. Today many cave scientists have another idea. They believe that cold water sinks down through cracks into these caves until the temperature is chilly enough to freeze the water that seeps (渗入) in. The ice that forms keep the cave cool, and that helps build up still more ice. Many caves become covered with so much ice that no one knows just how thick it is. In some, such as Crystal Falls Cave in Idaho, there are frozen rivers and even frozen waterfalls. Native Americans and early settlers used to storefood in these underground refrigerators and chip out blocks of ice to melt for drinking water.Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage:36.What does the passage mainly discuss?A)Characteristics of glaciers.B)Uses for ice caves.C)The origin of cave ice.]D)Where glaciers can be found.37. According to many of today’s cave scientists, what caus es ice to build up in caves?A)Rivers and waterfalls supply water.B)Icicles accumulate on the ceilings.C)Cave ice breaks off glaciers.D)Cold water seeps in and freezes.38. It can be inferred from the passage that the early settlers in the Unites States appreciated the ice cavesfor their ______.A) practicality B) beautiful interiorsC) historical value D) precious gems39. The author compares icicles to precious jewels based on which of the following?A) Appearance. B) Cost.C) Method of formation. D) Availability.40. Where is most of the cave ice in the United States found?A) In lava caves. B) In ancient glaciers.C) On cave ceilings. D) In cave cracks.Passage ThreeQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passages:With the Switzerland-based World Wildlife Fund(WWF), China is making a concerned and dedicated effort to save the endangered pandas. The results, officials here in Chengdu indicate, are mixed but encouraging.A clear disappointment is the failure to breed pandas in captivity, necessary if their decreasing numbers are to be replaced. Anotherfailure has been the incapability to find a natural, readily available food to replace the arrow bamboo.Despite these failures, success has come on two fronts. One achievement has been the physical rescue effort. Some pandas have been kept alive by salting the mountains with tons of cooked meat, which pandas will eat as a substitute for bamboo, and by the planting of new bamboo in isolated areas. Animals in some Sichuan areas have been rescued by local peasants and given emergency treatment by animal doctors.A second achievement is a massive fund-raising effort. Publicity about the pandas’ plight has resulted in a new $100,000 emergency allocation by the WWF and independent fund dries both in China and abroad. In spite of this support, there have been conflicts in the panda relief program. One important problem is the difficulty Peking is havingbalancing the recommendations of environmentalists with China’s ambitious goal of agricultural and industrial modernization.Wolong is but one example of this difficulty. This 494,000-acre preserve was declared a protected area in 1975. Yet 1,800 people, mostly Tibetans, still live in the preserve, logging trunks still roll down the narrow mountain roads, and blasting work still goes on at the site of a new 160,000-kilowatt hydroelectric plant just six miles away. This all means that the panda’s fight for survival will not be an easy one, even with the concerted effort of man. For in the end, even if they can survive the dangers of the wild, they must still contend with man.41. Efforts to save the endangered pandas _________.A)have met with setbacks but brought hope装订线内不要答题《大学英语(II)》试卷本卷共12页第5页《大学英语(II)》试卷本卷共12页第6页B)have proven highly successfulC)have failed completelyD)have received no response from the scientists42. All of the following help prevent the decline of the panda population EXCEPT__________.A)the large-scale fund-raising drivesB)the reproduction of panda offspring during captivityC)the rescue of the injured and the sickD)the cultivation of new bamboo forests44. It can be inferred from the passage that _____.A)Switzerland is the only country that contributes in the panda relief programB)it is too late to rescue the endangered pandasC)the survival of pandas is an international concernD)the lovely pandas will soon die out45. The tone of the author’s conclusion concerning pandas’ survival is _______.A) worried B) optimistic C) angry D) impersonalPassage FourWe use emotive language to express our own attitudes and feelings. We also direct emotive language at other people to persuade them to believe as we do or to do, as we want them to do; and, of course, other people direct emotive language at us to get us to believe or to do what they want.We are subjected to a constant stream of persuasion, day in, and day out, at home and in school, on the radio and on television. It comes from parents and teachers, from preachers and politicians, form editors and commentators, but most of all, of course, from advertisers. Most of this persuasion is expressed in emotive language and is intended to appeal to our feelings rather than to be weighted up by our powers of reasoning. We should look at the motives behind all this persuasion. Why do they want to persuade us? What do they want us to do? We are notthinking very clearly unless we try to see through the veil of words and realize something of the speakers’ purpose. An appeal to motion is in itself neither good nor bad. Our emotions exist and they are part of our personality. On some occasions people appeal to our emotions on the highest levels and from the best of motives. A case in point is Churchill’s wartime speeches: whatever people thought of Churchill as a politician, they were united behind him when he spoke as a national leader in those dark days their feelings responded to his call for resolution and unity. It is a characteristic of social groups that the members have a feeling of personal attachment to the group--- to the family in earliest childhood and extending later to the school, the team, the church, the nation, in patterns that vary from time to time. Hence a speaker from our group will find in us feelings to which he can readily and genuinely appeal, whether our reaction is favorable or not. We are at least open tothe appeal and we appreciate the content in which it is made.Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage:46. The passage discusses the emotive language, whose major functions are to ______.A)show one’s feelings and appeal to these of othersB)make others trust us and respond to our feelingC)extend our powers of reasoning and carry out a purposeD)advertise and produce the wanted social effects47. The source from which emotive language flows upon us in its greatest amount is _____.A) the religious circles B) the academic lectureC) the mass media D) the advertising business48. The third paragraph of this passage suggests that we __________.A)have to carefully use our emotive languageB)need to judge whether a persuasion is made for good or badC)should keep a cool head when subjected to different kinds of persuasionsD)should avoid being easily seen through by and appeal form others49. Churchill is mentioned in the passage as _______.A) a good example of the way of weighting up persuasion byreasoningB) a famous leader who brought out people’s best feelingsC) a positive example of appealing to people’s emotionD) a known politician who was good at lecturing50. From the passage we can get that a persuasive speaker must________.A)find out what group his audience is attached toB)differentiate his speech patterns from time to timeC)be aware of the way of adapting his speaking way to the needs of the audienceD)know whether the listeners are favorable to his opinion or not51. The rain then carries the salt into the earth and into the river s. The rivers carry the saltinto the ocean. But then we ask, "What happe ns to the salt in the ocean? It would be good to think that no one who is really bright can fail to become successful when the state system is apparently so thorough. It is obvious, for instance, that many children from less rich homes reach university or do well in other ways.Unfortunately, we now have plenty of evidence that many children of every level of ability do much less well than they could. For instance, during the years of national military service it was possible to test the intelligence of all males aged between 18 and 20. Half of those soldiers who were placed in the two highest ability groups had left schools at 15.It has also been shown that the percentage of working class children going to university is almost the same now as it was in 1939. One study of 5,000 children from birth to 21 years old indicated that up to half the bright pupils from working class homes left school when they reached 16 years old. Moreover, there is no difference in intelligence between the sexes, but for more boys than girls stay in education after 16.It is clear from this and much other evidence that many children are still leaving school too early to benefit from the prizes—money, social respectability, and interesting jobs, which higher education gives. It is clear too that the reasons why such children leave have much to do with their social circumstances. Their parents often need the extra money another wage-earner can bring in; they do not value education for itself because their own was probably dull and unhappy. It is not so much that they force their sons and daughters to leave school, rather that they tend to say, “It is up to you.”31.What’s the purpose of raising the school leaving ag e?A.To provide steps up the ladder of success.B.To provide children with the same chances in society.C.To give children the right to a better school.D.To give children a more thorough state system.32.In people’s eyes, the education system__________________.A. provides enough chances to success for children.B. misses no children who are really clever.C. only provides chances for children from rich families.D. does not give equal chances to all bright children.33.Working class children are felt to be at a disadvantage because______________ .A. many of the clever ones leave school early.B. fewer go to university than ever before.C. more than half leaves school when they are 16.D. fewer boys than girls stay at school after 16.34.Many children leave school early because__________________.A.their social circumstances make them unhappyB. they have to work to help support their familyC. their school is a dull and unhappy placeD. their parents don’t allow them to make their own decisions35. This article shows that equal opportunity in education__________________.A. is a thing of the pastB. has not yet been achievedC. is there for those who merit itD. has greatly improved our societyPassage 2There are three kinds of goals: short-term, medium-range and long-term goals. Short-range goals are those that usually deal with current activities, which we can apply on a daily basis. Such goals can be achieved in a week or less or two weeks, or possible months. It should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation, out long-term goals cannot amount to very munch without the achievement of solid short-term goals. Upon completing our short-term goals, we should date the occasion and then add new short-term goals that will build on those that have been completed. The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-range goals. They might deal with just one term of school or the entire school year, or they could even extend for several years. Any time you move a step at a time, you should never allow yourself to become discouraged or overwhelmed. As you complete each step, you will enforce the belief in your ability to grow and succeed. And as your list of completion dates grow, your motivation and desire will increase.Long-range goals may be related to our dreams of the future. They might cover five years or more. Life is not a static thing. We should never allow a long-term goal to limit us or our course of action.36. Our long-term goals mean a lot__________________.A. if we complete our short-range goalsB. if we cannot reach solid short-term goalsC. if we write down the datesD. if we put forward some plans37. New short-term goals are built upon__________________.A. two yearsB. long-term goalsC. current activitiesD. the goals that have been completed38. When we complete each step of our goals, __________________.A. we will win final successB. we are overwhelmedC. we should build up confidence of successD. we should have strong desire for setting new goals39. Once our goals are drawn up, __________________.A. we should stick to them until we complete themB. we may change our goals as we have new ideas and opportunitiesC. we had better wait for the exciting news of successD. we have made great decision40. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centrePassage OneWhen we talk about intelligence, we do not mean the ability to get good scores on certain kinds of tests or even the ability to do well in school. By intelligence we mean a way of living and behaving, especially in a new or upsetting situation. If we want to test intelligence, we need to find out how a person acts instead of how much he knows what to do. For instance, when in a new situation, an intelligent person thinks about the situation, not about himself or what might happen to him. He tries to find out all he can, and then he acts immediately and tries to do something about it. He probably isn't sure how it will all work out, but at least h e tries. And, if he can’t make things work out right, he doesn't feel ashamed that he failed; he just tries to learn from his mistakes. An intelligent person, even if he is very young, has a special outlook on life, a special feeling about life, and knows how he fits into it.If you look at children, you'll see great difference between what we call "bright" children and "not-bright" children. They are actually two different kinds of people, not just the same kind with different amount of intelligence. For example, the bright child really wants to find out about life - he tries to get in touch with everything around him. But, the unintelligent child keeps more to himself and his own dream-world; he seems to have a wall between him and life in general.61. According to this passage, intelligence is __________.A. the ability to study wellB. the ability to do well in schoolC. the ability to deal with lifeD. the ability to get high scores on some tests62. In a new situation, an intelligent person__________.A. knows more about what might happen to himB. is sure of the result he will getC. concentrates on what to do about the situationD. cares more about himself63. If an intelligent person failed, he would__________. A. try not to feel ashamed B. learn from his experiencesC. try to regret as much as possibleD. make sure what result he would get64. Bright children and not-bright children__________.A. are two different types of childrenB. are different mainly in their degree of clevernessC. have difference only in their way of thinkingD. have different knowledge about the world65. The author of this passage will probably continue to talk about __________.A. how to determine what intelligence isB. how education should be foundC. how to solve practical problemsD. how an unintelligent person should be taughtPassage TwoIf women are mercilessly exploited year, they have only themselves to blame.Because they tremble at the thought of being seen in public in clothes that are out of fashion, they are always taken advantage of by the designers and the big stores.Clothes which have been worn only a few times have to be put aside because of the change of fashion. When you come to think of it ,only a woman is capable of standing in front of a wardrobe(衣柜)packed full of clothes and announcing sadly that she has nothing to wear.Changing fashions are nothing more than the intentional creation of waste. Many women spend vast sums of money each year to replace clothes that have hardly been worn. Women who cannot afford to throw away clothing in this way, waste hours of their time altering the dresses they have. Skirts are lengthened or shortened; neck lines are lowered or raised, and so on.No one can claim that the fashion industry contributes anything really important to society. Fashion designers are rarely concerned with vital things like warmth, comfort and durability(耐用). They are only interested in outward appearance and they take advantage of the fact that women will put up with any amount of discomfort, as long as they look right. There can hardly be a man who hasn’t at some time in his life smile at the sight of a woman shaking in a thin dress on a winter day, or delicately picking her way through deep snow in high-heeled shoes. When comparing men and women in the matter of fashion, the conclusions to be drawn are obvious. Do the constantly changing fashions of women’s clothes, one wonders, reflect basic qualities of inconstancy and instability? Men are too clever to let themselves be cheated by fashion designers. Do their unchanging styles of dress reflect basic qualities of stability and reliability? That is for you to decide.66. Designers and big stores always make money_________________A. by mercilessly exploiting women workers in the clothing industryB. because they are capable of predicting new fashionsC. by constantly changing the fashions in women’s clothingD. because they attach great importance to quality in women’s clothing67. To the writer, the fact that women alter their old-fashioned dresses is seenas______.A. a waste of moneyB. a waste of timeC. an expression of tasteD. an expression of creativity68. The writer would be less critical if fashion designers placed more stress on the___ _ of clothing.A. costB. appearanceC. comfortD. suitability69. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?A. New fashions in clothing are created for the commercial exploitation of womenB. The constant changes in women’s clothing reflect their strength of characterC. The fashion industry make an important contribution to societyD. Fashion designs should not be encouraged since they are only welcomed bywomen.70. By saying “the conclusions to be drawn are obvious” (lines 1-2, Para.4) thewriter means that ________.A. women’s inconstancy in their choice of clothing is often laughed atB. women are better able to put up with discomfortC. men are also exploited greatly by fashion designersD. men are more stable and reliable in characterPassage ThreeDo you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues as: “Get up, John! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.You can’t change your energy cycle, bu t you can learn to make you life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning, but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam and work better at your low point.Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. A void the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharper hours.71.If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably__________.A. he is a lazy personB. he refuses to follow his own energy cycleC. he is not sure when his energy is lowD. he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening72.Which of the following may lead to family quarrels according to the passage?A. Unawareness of energy cycles.B. Familiar monologuesC. A change in a family member’s energy cycleD. Attempts to control the energy cycle of other family members73.If one wants to work more efficiently at his how point in the morning, he should_________A. change his energy cycleB. overcome his lazinessC. get up earlier than usualD. go to bed earlier74.You are advised to rise with a yawn and stretch because it will___________A. help to keep your energy for the day’s workB. help you to control your temper early in the dayC. enable you to concentrate on your routine workD. keep your energy cycle under control all day75.Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE?A. Getting off to work with a minimum effort helps save one’s energyB. Dr. Kletman explains why people reach their peaks at different hours of day.C. Habit helps a person adapt to his own energy cycleD. Children have energy cycles, too.Part V. Translation (20 points)Section A: translate the following sentences into English. (10 points)76. 我们已经在这个项目上投入了大量时间和精力,所以我们只能继续。

Be sure to write your answers on Answer Sheet (2).German careers or jobs fall into several categories. First, there are positions that require strong ability in German with a company in Germany, Austria or Switzerland. This category may also include a job requiring good German and/or bilingual (双语的)skills within a company doing business in the US, Canada, Mexico or elsewhere. Secondly, there are jobs that can be done in English in German Europe. Then there are German companies abroad. Most minor and many major positions are filled by recruiting German, Austrian orSwiss nationals. If you are already in German Europe, you may have a better chance of finding a job. In any case, it is best if your company can handle all the formalities involved when a foreign national takes a job in Germany. There are also relocation services that can help with this if you don’thave any ideas yourself. The German unemployment rate has remained at a fairly high level over the last decade. It is almost impossible for a non-German to get a job in Germany unless she/hecan prove that it can’t be done by a German national. In certain fields, such as compute science or information systems, “green card” foreign workers have been imported, but this practice is still uncommon. The reality of searching for and finding a suitable position in German Europe or with a German firm means two main things: knowledgeand planning. Too many times, job seekers have unrealistic expectations. Often they overestimate their language skills and underestimate the level of competition. Another-related sites.danger is ignoring culture shock. That’s why we also offer links to culture For getting most German jobs, it is your ability in a field—computers, teaching, advertising, etc.—rather than your German skills that will be the biggest factor in a successful search. But all other things being equal between you and another candidate, itis the person with the best language skills who usually gets the job.41. What is the requirement of the job within a company doing business in the US,Canada, Mexico or elsewhere included in the first category?42. What might the company do for the benefit of a foreign employee?43. What seems to be “hot” fields if you are to find a job in German?44. Long-distance trains have never been (7) common in the United States as they are in other parts of the world. Nowadays there is a good system of air-service providing planes. But it is too expensive to be used frequently. The third reason is the most important one, though. The American spirit of independence is (8) really made cars popular. Americans don’t like to wait for a bus, or a train or even a plane. They don’t like to have to (9) an exact schedule. A car gives them the freedom to schedule (10) time. Then everything changed. During the Fourth of July weekend, residents woke up one morning to find that the lake had disappeared. Some people didn't believe what they were seeing. They looked again, but to their amazement they found they had been right the first time. The lake was simply no longer there. In its place was a muddy crater(坑), 30 feet deep. It was as if the lake had been a giant bathtub(浴盆)and someone had pulled the plug. The lake's owner, Joseph Unanue, did indeed pull the plug. That's exactly what happened. The dam(水坝) that held back the water to form the lake was falling apart, so government officials ordered him to repair it. They issued him a permit to lower the dam level "five feet or more." He did much more. Mr. Unanue found repairs to the dam would cost $100,000. He didn't want to spend that much, so he opened the dam and lowered the water level until the lake was completely drained. People living above the dam ended up with no lake. People living below the dam ended up with tons of mud and lots of dead fish. Everyone involved was angry with Mr. Unanue. Area residents believe Mr. Unanue acted out of spite(恶意). They say he wanted to get back at them because the town wouldn't let him develop an amusement park on the lakeshore. This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you're "hot". That's true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues as: "Get up, John! You'll be late for work again!" The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and -energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has. You can't change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you're sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won't change your cycle, but you'll get up steam and work better at your low point. Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharper hours.1.If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably _______.A.he is a lazy personB.he refuses to follow his own energy cycle C.he is not sure when his energy is low D.he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening 参考答案:D 2.Which of the following may lead to family quarrels according to the passage? D.Children have energy cycles, too. 参考答案:B3、 If there is any single factor that makes for success in living, it is the ability to profit by defeat. Every success I know has been achieved because the person wasable to analyze defeat was actually profit by it in his next undertaking. Confuse defeat with failure, and you are doomed indeed to failure. For it isn't defeat that makes you fail: it is your own refusal to see in defeat the guide and encouragement to success.Defeats are nothing to be ashamed of. They are routine incidents in the life of every man who achieves success. But defeat is a dead loss unless you do face it without humiliation, analyze it and learn why you failed. Defeat, in other words, can help to cure its own muse. Not only does defeat prepare us for success, but nothing can amuse within us a compelling desire to success. If you let a baby grasp a rod and try to pull it away, he will cling more and more tightly until his whole weight is suspended. It is this same reaction that should give you new and greater strength every time you are defeated. If you exploit the power that defeat gives, you can accomplish with it far more that you are capable of. 1.What does the author know?A.He knows at least several cases of success.B.He knows every success in life.C.It's not mentioned in the passage.D.He knows every success that has been achieved by man. 参考答案:A 2.The person who was able to analyze defeat is likely_________.A.to achieve successB.to be a successorC.to be ashamed of his defeatD.to let a baby grasp a rod 参考答案:A 3.The author _________.A.advises you to confuse defeat with failureB.wants you to mistake defeat for failureC.orders you to confuse defeat with failureD.warns you not to confuse defeat with failure 参考答案:D 4.Defeat is valuable ________.A.because it makes you failB.because it forces you to face it without humiliationC.in that it provides the guide and encouragement to successD.because of your own refusal to see in it the guide and encouragement to success 参考答案:C 5.What does the author advise one to do with the power which defeat gives? But if you try to make a film by setting up a camera in front of the stage, you will find it won’t work. A film made in this way will lea ve the audience cold. And even worse you’ll be wasting a powerful tool —the camera.A stage is actually a box. One side of the box has been removed so the audience can see what’s going on inside. The actors remain at a fixed audience. In the film, however, the camera can bring the audience up close and fix their attention on small but important things: a frightened look, a whisper, a trembling of hands. The camera offers the film maker freedom allowing him to move easily across barriers(界限) of time and space. He can show his action in real cities and on real farms. He can also use the camera to change the scene dozens of times in one film. No expert of the stage can do this.(15分)(1)The main idea of the text is that ________ (3分)A stage plays and films are two different kinds of artB it is always disappointing to turn play into filmsC films have certain advantages(长处) over stage playsD the camera has made film making easy and possible(2)What is wrong with making a film by setting up a camera before the stage?(3分)A Fewer and fewer people will go to the theatre.B The audience cannot see what is going on the stage.C The scene cannot be changed from time to time.D The powerful camera cannot be made good use of.(3)Which of the following can show that the camera is a powerful tool?(3分)A It can move easily.B It can make small things look larger.C It can show things in the future.D It can give us a scene of realism.(4)In what way are plays different from film?(3分)A Films often use real scenery while plays don’t.B Films can show the past while plays can’t.C Films change scenes while plays don’t.D Film audience can move while play audience can’t.(5)A suitable title for this text is _______.(3分)A Stage Plays and FilmB The Powerful CameraC Fewer Plays, More FilmsD Less Waste, More Freedom三、完形填空(每题10分,共1道小题,总分值10分)1. It listed all the tradesmen in each village in my part of the country, and it was impressive to see the great variety of services which were available on one'''' s own doorstep in the late Victorian countryside. Nowadays a superficial traveller in rural England might conclude that the village tradesmen still flourishing were either selling frozen food to the inhabitants or selling antiques to visitors. Nevertheless, this would really be a false impression. Admittedly there has been a contraction (收缩) of village commerce, but its vigor is still
