Future generations could be living well into their second century and still doing Sudoku, if life expectancy predictions are true. Increasing by two years every decade, they show no signs of flattening out. Average lifespan worldwide is already double what it was 200 years ago. Since the 1980s, experts thought the increase in life expectancy would slow down and then stop, but forecasters have repeatedly been proved wrong. The reason behind the steady rise in life expectancy is "the decline in the death rate of the elderly", says Professor Tom Kirkwood from Newcastle University. He maintains that our bodies are evolving to maintain and repair themselves better and our genes are investing in this process to put off the damage which will eventually lead to death. As a result, there is no ceiling imposed by the realities of the ageing process. "There is no use-by-date when we age. Ageing is not a fixed biological process," Tom says.A large study of people aged 85 and over carried out by Professor Kirkwood discovered that there were a remarkable number of people enjoying good health and independence in their late 80s and beyond. With people reaching old age in better shape, it is safe to assume that this is all due to better eating habits, living conditions, education and medicine. There are still many people who suffer from major health problems, but modern medicine means doctors are better at managing long-term health conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. "We are reaching old age with less accumulative damage than previous generations. We are less damaged," says Professor Kirkwood. Oursofter lives and the improvements in nutrition and healthcare have had a direct impact on longevity.Nearly one-in-five people currently in the UK will live to see their 100th birthday, the Office for National Statistics predicted last year. Life expectancy at birth has continued to increase in the UK—from 73.4 years for the period 1991 to 1993 to 77.85 years for 2007 to 2009. A report in Science from 2002 which looked at life expectancy patterns in different countries since 1840 concluded that there was no sign of a natural limit to life. Researchers Jim Oeppen and Dr. James Vaupel found that people in the country with the highest life expectancy would live to an average age of 100 in about six decades. But they stopped short of predicting anything more."This is far from eternity: modest annual increments in life expectancy will never lead to immortality," the researchers said.We do not seem to be approaching anything like the limits of life expectancy, says Professor David Leon from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. "There has been no flattening out of the best of the best—the groups which everyone knows have good life expectancy and low mortality," he says. These groups, which tend to be in the higher social and economic groups in society, can live for several years longer than people in lower social groups, prompting calls for an end to inequalities within societies.Within populations, genes also have an important role to play in determining how long we could survive for—but environment is still the most important factor. It is no surprise that healthy-living societies like Japan have the highest life expectancies in the world. But it would still be incredible to think that life expectancy could go on rising forever. "I would bet there will be further increases in life expectancy and then it will probably begin to slow," says Tom, "but we just don't know."21 The purpose of the prediction saying that future generations could be doing Sudoku when they are over 100 is to______.(A)report that doing Sudoku is a healthy living style(B)prove that doing Sudoku helps people move to Methuselah(C)predict that future generations will like Sudoku since it is very popular now(D)indicate that future generations could remain smart and energetic even if they are over 10022 The underlined phrase "this process" in Paragraph 2 refers to______process.(A)the ageing(B)the body-evolving(C)the genes-repairing(D)the body's putting-off-damage23 Based on recent studies made by various scholars, which of the following factors plays a fundamental role in man's longevity?(A)Genes.(B)Eating habits.(C)Environment.(D)Medical condition.24 The underlined phrase "low mortality" in Paragraph 8 could best be replaced by"______".(A)short life span(B)low death irate(C)low illness rate(D)good health condition25 Which statement below is TRUE concerning life expectancy according to the passage?(A)Life expectancy goes on rising forever.(B)There could be further increases in life expectancy.(C)Life expectancy has slowed down since 1980s and it will stop.(D)Life expectancy in Japan doubles what it was 200 years ago.

But is it true? Or, toput the matterless starkly, is t here aconnectionbetween creativityand dishonesty in realpeoplewho are not bent onworld domination, as well asinfictional supervillains?Writing in Psychological Science, Francesca Ginoof HarvardUniversityandScott Wiltermuth of the Universityof Southern Californiasuggest that there is—and that cheating actually increases creativity.Dr Gino and DrWiltermuthtested the honesty of 153 volunteers with a task that involved adding up numbers for acashreward, which was presented ina way that seemedto them to allow them to cheat undetected (thoughthe researchers knew when they did). This wassandwiched between two tests forcreativity, one of which was to work out how to fix a candleto a cardboard wall with a box ofdrawing pins*, andthe other aword-association test.Thi scombination showed not onlythat creativepeople cheat more, butalsothatcheating seems to encouragecreativity—for those who cheatedin theadding-up test were evenbetterat word associationthan their candle-testresult spredicted. That resultwas confirmed by a second set of experiments, in which some people were given many opportunitiesto cheat andothers few. The crucial predictor ofcreativity, the researchers confirmed, wasthe actual amount ofcheating, not any propensity to cheat.A third experimenttested the idea that this isbecause both creativityanddishonestyrequire, asit were, a flexible attitude to rules. In this experimen tvolunteers were askedabouttheirattitude to bossysigns, suchas “nocycling”and“no diving” notices, after being allowed tocheat(again, in a waytransparent totheexperimenters) on a coin-tossing test.C heats, it turnedout, were lessconstrained to obey such signs. It is,it goeswithoutsaying, a longway from such actsof petty defiance to building a lairinside an extinct volcano and threatening Washington from it—or even to non-fictionalacts of serious crime. The cities of Sumeria; Egypt and the Indus Valley possessed a number of characteristics that distinguished them as truly urban. The cities were very much larger and more densely populated than any previous settlement; and their function wasclearly differentiated from that of the surrounding villages. In the cities the old patterns of kinship relations were replaced by a complex hierarchy of social classes based on the specialization oflabor. Moreover; the need to keep records led to the development of writing and arithmetic; and the increased sophistication of urban society gave a new impetus to artistic expression of every kind. When the basis of city life was established in Europe the urban tradition was drawn from the ancient cities of the Middle East; via the civilization of Greece and Rome. We can trace threemain phases in the growth of the West European city. The first of these is the medieval phase which extends from the beginning of the 1 lth century A.D. to about 1;500 to the beginning of the 19th century. The third is the modern phase extending from the early 19th century to the present day.Every medieval city began as a small settlement; which grew up round a geographical or cultural focal point. This would be a permanent structure such as a stronghold; a cathedral or a large church. In districts where travel and trade were well established; it might be a market; a river crossing; or a place where two or more trade routes met; in studies of urban geography the oldest part of town is referred to as the nuclear settlement. There are many small towns in Europe where it is still possible to trace the outline of the original nuclear settlement. It is; of course;much more difficult to do this in the case if a large modern city which has grown to many times its original size.21. The ancient cities were characterized by all the following except__________.A. larger populationsB. different rolesC. different social classesD. different locations22. Which of the following statements is TRUEA. West European cities established their own urban traditions.B. West European cities grew directly out of those in the Middle East.C. It is easier to locate its original nuclear settlement of a small town__________.A. because it began as a small settlementB. because it is less developedC. because of its small sizeD. because of its location25. Which of the following would be the best title of the passageA. The Origin and Development of Cities.B. The Differences Between a Modern City and an Ancient City.C. The Functions of a City.D. The Characteristics of an Ancient City. Passage 2There are two factors which determine an individual's intelligence. The first is the sort of brain he is born with. Human brains differ considerably; some being more capable than others. But no matter how good a brain he has to begin with; an individual will have a low order of intelligence unless he has opportunities to learn. So the second factor is what happens to the individual--thesort of environment in which he is brought up. If an individual is handicapped environmentally; it is likely that his brain will fail to develop and he will never attain the level of intelligence of which he is capable.Theimportanceofenvironmentindetermininganindividual'sintelligencecanbedemonstrated by the case history of the identical twins; Peter and Mark. Being identical; the twins had identical brains at birth; and their growth processes were the same. When the twins were three months old; their parents died; and they were placed in separate foster homes. Peter was raised by parents of low intelligence in an isolated community with poor educational opportunities. Mark was reared in the home of well-to-do parents who had been to college. He was read to as a child; sent to good schools; and given every opportunity to be stimulated intellectually. This environmental difference continued until the twins were in their late teens; when they were given tests to measure their intelligence. Mark's LQ. was 125; twenty-five points higher than the average and fully forty points higher than his identical brother. Given equal opportunities; the twins; having identical brains; would have tested at roughly the same level.26. This selection can best be titled__________.A. Measuring Your IntelligenceB. Intelligence and EnvironmentC. The Case of Peter and MarkD. How the Brain Influences Intelligence27. The best statement of the main idea of this passage is that__________.A. human brains differ considerablyB. the brain a person is born with is important in determining his intelligenceC. environment is crucial in determining a person's intelligenceD. persons having identical brains will have roughly the same intelligence28. According to the passage; the average I.Q. is__________.A. 85B. 100C. 110D. 12529. The case history of the twins appears to support the conclusion that__________.A. individuals with identical brains seldom test at the same levelB. an individual's intelligence is determined only by his environmentC. lack of opportunity blocks the growth of intelligenceD. changes of environment produce changes in the structure of the brain30. This passage suggests that an individual's I.Q. __________.A. can be predicted at birthB. stays the same throughout his lifeC. can be increased by educationD. is determined by his childhood二、简答题本大题1小题;20分根据题目要求完成下列任务;用中文作答..31. Betty: Hi Mum; can you hear meMum: Yes; I can.

题干“the dignity and the honor”,第一个the后面为dignity,首字母发辅音[ d],故the 发音[ ðə];第二个the后面为honor,h在元音字母前不发音,因此该词发音为[ˈɒnə(r)],首字母发元音音素[ɒ],故the发音[ ðɪ].

例如:notebook['nəʊ(t)bʊk] picture['pi(k)tʃə].A项:bicycle中c与l相连,正常发音[k],排除。
