Most people think that the best store is one with very expensive goods. It’s certainly great if
you have a pocket full of money and can buy something in one. How wonderful to be able to come home with an expensive computer, a latest(最新的) iPod or a designer dress!
But have you ever heard of “dollar stores”? As the name suggests, in dollar stores everything costs a dollar or less. You find them in the US and many other Western countries. In dollar stores there are thousands of kinds of things and everything is affordable (买得起).
If you go into a clothes shop, you find clothes. If you go into a car showroom, you see cars.
But in a dollar store who knows what you will find? Visiting a dollar store is like going on a treasure hunt. There’ll be pots and pans for the kitchen, books, clothes, toys-----and a thousand other things you never dreamed of! There’s always a surprise in a dollar store.
Why are dollar stores so cheap? It’s because they’re full of stock (库存) that hasn’t sold in other stores: clothes that were last year’s fashion; books that won’t sell; inventions for the kitchen that didn’t catch on (流行). You may find you don’t want these, either. But, even if you don’t want to buy, they are great places to look around-----rather like museums. And remember, nothing costs more than a dollar!
45. What can we buy in dollar stores?
A. A new computer.
B. A designer dress.
C. Some diamonds.
D. A toy.
46. Why are things cheap in dollar stores?
A. Because there are many kinds of things.
B. Because the things are not new.
C. Because people have a pocket full of money.
D. Because the things are not up to date.

The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games are drawing near. Are you looking forward to watching the
matches? If so, here are some suggestions you need to know about audience manners.
Most sporting arenas (赛场) have rules for audience which are written on the back of the tickets. Read your ticket carefully before you arrive. Try to reach your seat half an hour before the start of the event and don’t walk about when a game is being held. When you leave, remember to take away your soft drink bottles and other rubbish.
During exciting games, try to control yourself. Don’t criticize (批评) the performance of players and coaches. Be careful with your words, since some may cause anger among other people in the audience.
Applause is a special form of body language you can use to communicate(交流) with players. But you should do it properly. When players first appear, clap your hands together to welcome them; don’t go on for too long. After an excellent performance, applaud (鼓掌) warmly.
Applause is not welcome, however, while a game is being held and the players need to focus all their attention. Different sports have different rules for the audience. Enjoying artistic gymnastics (艺术体操) requires silence. But lots of cheering can really help basketball and football players. Using flash (闪光灯) to take photos is quite disturbing to tennis players. Mobile phones can not be used in shooting centers.
To be a good spectator (观众), you should take time to learn the game ------ related rules and audience manners of each event.
48. According to the writer, it’s good manners to __________.
A. arrive at the sporting arenas just before the start of the event
B. complain about the bad performance of players from time to time
C. applaud for the excellent performance of players properly
D. walk here and there when a game is being held
49. According to the passage, in which of the following events CAN’T we use flash to take
photos?

“Who did this?” asked my teacher. Thirty children tried to think about not only what they had done, but also what our teacher might have found out.
“Who did this?” she asked again. She never became angry, but she was this time. She held up a piece of broken glass and asked, “Who broke this window?”
“Oh, oh,” I thought. I was the one who broke the window. I did not do it on purpose (故意). It was caused by a bad throw of a baseball. Why did it have to be me?
If I admitted (承认) it, I would be in a lot of trouble. How would I be able to pay for a big window like that? “My father is going to get angry at me,” I thought. I didn’t want to raise (举起) my hand, but something much stronger than me pulled it up.
“I did it,” I said. Then I was silent. It was hard enough saying what I had.
My teacher went to one of our bookshelves and took down a book. She then began walking towards my desk. I had never known my teacher to strike (打) a student, but I feared she was going to start with me.
“I know how you like birds,” she said as she stood looking down at my face. “Here is the
field guide about birds (鸟类野外指南) that you always check out from our school library. It is
yours now. We have got a new one for the school. You will not be punished (惩罚). But remember,
it ’s only for your honesty.”
I couldn ’t believe it! I wasn ’t being punished and I was getting my own bird field guide, the
one that I had been saving up all my money to buy.
51. How did the writer feel when he saw his teacher walking towards him with a book from
bookshelves?
A. Relaxed.
B. Pleased.
C. Frightened.
D. Guilty.

A. lend
B. borrow
C. test
D. buy

D. The writer didn’t want to admit his mistake at the beginning.
54. The writer mainly wants to tell us that ____________.

B. better late than never
C. practice makes perfect
D. a friend in need is a friend indeed

the earth is called atmosphere. It ’s up to more than 600
miles high. Airplanes fly only a few miles high in the air. The atmosphere makes the temperature
on the earth so good that a great number of living things can stay alive.
Air is all around us. Air is a mixture of gases(气体) that we can not see. About one fifth of
the air is oxygen, which is needed by all living things. About four fifths of the air is nitrogen(氮).
Plants need it to live. There are other gases in the air. The most important among them is carbon
dioxide. Green plants use carbon dioxide to make food. People give off carbon dioxide when they
breathe.
Air has weight and takes up space. Air pressure (压力) inside our body is almost the same as
air pressure outside. Because of this balance, we don ’t feel the pressure of the air on us.
Since the sun ’s heat affects the earth ’s air, the weather conditions on the earth change greatly:
warm or hot; cool or cold; sunny or cloudy; windy, rainy, or snowy.
When temperature changes, what happens to the air? When air is being heated, it expands(膨
胀). That means it takes up more space. When air is being cooled, it takes up less space, or
contracts(收缩).
