In modern English:
Lo! We the Spear-Danes, in days of yore, have heard of the glory of the people's kings how the noble ones did deeds of valor.
.精品课件 is a descriptive, poetical expression used instead of a simple name for a person or thing. Beowulf is hardly ever called by his actual name. Instead there are many kennings referring to him, such as: "Prince of the Weders", "The Son of Ecgtheow", "The Geatish hero", and "The Lord of the Seamen". These kennings describe Beowulf to us in a more interesting way than just stating the hard facts. Without these kennings Beowulf would be less interesting and we would learn less about him. Anybody would say that describing or referring to a person by his or her name over and over again is boring. So the use of kennings and metaphors is very important in this long epic poem.

Literary Terms
Allegory: It loosely describes any writing in verse or prose that has a double meaning. An allegorical reading usually involves moral or spiritual concepts that may be more significant than the actual, literal events described in a narrative. Probably the most famous allegory in English literature is John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress (1678). Other important allegorical works include Spenser's The Faerie Queene and Gulliver‘s Travels. Ballad: It is a story in poetic form to be sung or recited. It was passed down from generation to generation. Robin Hood is a famous ballad singing the goods of Robin Hood.

how the noble ones did deeds of valor.
So, what styles can you observe in the lines of Beowulf?
In terms of its language &rhyme:
Old English poetry such as Beowulf is very different from modern poetry. It was probably recited, for few people at that time were able to read. Instead of pairs of lines joined by rhyme (similarity of sounds at the ends of words), Anglo-Saxon poets typically used alliteration - a technique in which the first half of the line (the a-verse) is linked to the second half (the b-verse) through similarity in initial sound: Oft Scyld Scefing sceaðena threatum。

Epic: definition
Epic is an extended narrative poem in elevated or dignified language, like Homer’s Iliad (伊利亚特) & Odyssey(奥德赛). It usually celebrates the feats of one or more legendary or traditional heroes. The action is simple, but full of magnificence. Today, some long narrative works, like novels that reveal an age & its people, are also called epic.
