They show a strong interest in the bones of their own kind. They are often seen gently touching the bones with their trunks and feet while remaining very quiet.Sometimes elephants completely unrelated to the dead will still visit their graves.Elephant researcher Meredith recalls something in his book about a typical elephant death ritual. The entire family of a dead elephant, including her young baby, were all gently touching her body with their trunks, trying to lift her. The elephant herd were all rumbling(低吼):The baby elephant was even observed to be weeping and made sounds that sounded like a scream, but then the entire herd fell incredibly silent. Then they began to throw leaves and dirt over the body and broke off tree branches to cover her. They spent the next two days quietly standing over her body. They sometimes had to leave to get water or food, but they would always return.Events of elephants behaving this way around human beings are common throughout Africa. On many occasions, they have buried dead or sleeping humans or helped them when they are hurt. An old woman fell asleep under a tree. When she woke up,there was an elephant standing over her, gently touching her.She kept very still because she was frightened. As other elephants arrived, they began to scream loudly and buried her under branches. She was found the next morning by the local people, unharmed.George Adamson also recalls when he shot all elephant from a herd that kept breaking into the farmers’gardens.George gave the:elephant’s meat to 1ocal men and then dragged the rest of the body miles away. That night, the other elephants found the body, took the leg bones, returned them to the exact spot the elephant was killed, and made the death ritual.56.Elephants touch the bones of their own kind to ______________.A.express sorrow at the death B.search for the hunterC.clean their trunks and feet D.call for other elephants57.What can we learn about the ritual from Meredith’s book?A.All the elephants were observed to be weeping.B.All the elephants felt sad in the ritual.C.The whole herd screamed for two days.D.The elephants ate nothing for two days.58.The elephant watched the woman because ______________.A.it thought she was sleeping B.it thought she was deadC.it tried to protect her D.it wanted to wake her up59.The case mentioned in the last paragraph mainly shows that ______________.A.it’s cruel of humans to kill elephants for meatB.elephants can find out who hunted their membersC.elephants tend to make the death ritual for their membersD.there are often conflicts between elephants and humans60.What is the best title for the passage?A.Humans and elephantsB.The intelligenee of elephantsC.The feelings of elephantsD.The death rituals of elephantsEA four-wheeled robot, known as Rover, has been tested by a team at Sydney University. It was used to move a herd of cows from a field to a dairy(牛奶场).Researchers were amazed at how easily cows accepted the presence of the robot. They were not disturbed by it and the gathering process was calm and effective.Because the robot moved in a steady manner it allowed cows to move at their own speed, which was important in reducing injuries among cattle, said Dr Kendra Kerrisk, dairy researcher and associate professor. The robot was adapted from one that was already being used to monitor fruit and trees on farms.A team at Sydney University’s Centre for Field Robotics improved the robot so that it could be put in a field with cows in order for the researchers to gather data on robot—cow interaction. The robot ne eds to be operated by a human but it’s hoped that in the future a version can be developed that will be fully automated. As well as gathering cows a new version could also collect information useful for farmers.Using robots to get cows to the dairy will be better for their well-being.“The research is in its very early stages but robotic technologies certainly have the potential to transform dairy farming,”said Dr.Kerrisk.“When we have discussed this concept with farmers they have been extremely excited and we have had a series of calls and emails asking how they can get hold of one,”she added. The robot could also cut down the number of accidents involving humans on farms. Most dairy farmers in Australia use bikes to round up their cattle and they are one of the leading causes of injury. The team hopes that by using the robot to do the job instead, accident rates could fall.61.The robot Rover was mainly used to _____________.A.milk the cows on the field B.feed the cows with foodC.round up cows on dairy farms D.take farmers around the farm62.Why did the cows, accept the robot easily?A.Because it moved at a steady pace.B.Because it didn’t hurt the cattle.C.Because it was calm and kind.D.Because it allowed cows to walk at a fast speed.63.At present, the robot Rover ______________.A.can go around the farm automaticallyB.can help researchers to gather dataC.has to be operated by a humanD.has been available in the market64.What can we learn from Dr.Kerrisk’s words in the fifth paragraph?A.The research will soon be finished.B.The robot will be popular among farmers.C.Robotic technology has highly developed.D.Dairy farming has much potential.65.What’s the main idea of the text?A.A team at Sydney University developed a robot.B.Using robots on farms can reduce injuries.C.Dairy farming in Australia needs transforming.D.Robot used to round up cows is a hit with farmers.第Ⅱ卷第三部分写作(共两节,满分45分)第一节阅读表达(每小题3分,满分15分)阅读下面短文,并根据短文后的要求答题(请注意问题后的字数要求)。
