For each of them there are four choices, marked A, B, C and D. You are to make ONE choice that can best either answer the question or complete the statement.AThe tourist trade is booming. With all this coming and going, you'd expect greater understanding to develop between the nations of the world. Not a bit of it! Superb systems of communication by air, sea and land make it possible for us to visit each other's countries at a moderate cost. What was once the 'grand tour', reserved for only the very rich, is now within everybody's grasp. The package tour and chartered flights are not to be sneered at. Modern travelers enjoy a level of comfort which the lords and ladies on grand tours in the old days couldn't have dreamed of. But what's the sense of this mass exchange of populations if the nations of the world remain basically ignorant of each other? Many tourist organizations are directly responsible for this state of affairs. They deliberately set out to protect their clients from too much contact with the local population. The modern tourist leads a cosseted, sheltered life. He lives at international hotels, where he eats his international food and sips his international drink while he gazes at the natives from a distance. Conducted tours to places of interest are carefully censored. The tourist is allowed to see onlywhat the organizers want him to see and no more. A strict schedule makes it impossible for the tourist to wander off on his own; and anyway, language is always a barrier, so he is only too happy to be protected in this way. At its very worst, this leads to a new and hideous kind of colonization. The summer quarters of the inhabitants of the cite universities: are temporarily reestablished on the island of Corfu. Blackpoll is recreated at Torremolinos where the traveler goes not to eat paella, but fish and chips. The sad thing about this situation is that it leads to the persistence of national stereotypes. We don't see the people of other nations as they really are, but as we have been brought up to believe they are. You can test this for yourself. Take five nationalities, say, French, German, English, American and Italian. Now in your mind, match them with these five adjectives: musical, amorous, cold, pedantic, native. Far from providing us with any insight into the national characteristics of the peoples just mentioned, these adjectives actually act as barriers. So when you set out on your travels, the only characteristics you notice are those which confirm your preconceptions. You come away with the highly unoriginal and inaccurate impression that, say, 'Anglo-Saxons are hypocrites' of that 'Latin peoples shout a lot'. You only have to make a few foreign friends to understand how absurd and harmful national stereotypes are. But how can you make foreign friends when the tourist trade does its best to prevent you?Carried to an extreme, stereotypes can be positively dangerous. Wild generalizations stir up racial hatred and blind us to the basic fact—how trite it sounds! –that all people are human. We are all similar to each other and at the same time all unique.36. The best title for this passage is _____.A. tourism contributes nothing to increasing understanding between nationsB. tourism is tiresomeC. conducted tour is dullD. tourism really does something to one's country37. What is the author's attitude toward tourism?A. apprehensive.B. negative.C. critical.D. appreciative.38. Which word in the following is the best to summarize Latin people shout a lot?A. silent.B. noisy.C. lively.D. active.39. The purpose of the author's criticism is to point out _____.A. conducted tour is disappointingB. the way of touring should be changedC. when traveling, you notice characteristics which confirm preconceptionD. national stereotypes should be changed40. What is 'grand tour' now?A. moderate cost.B. local sight-seeing is investigated by the tourist organization.C. people enjoy the first-rate comforts.D. everybody can enjoy the 'grand tour'.BIf you intend using humor in your talk to make people smile, you must know how to identify shared experiences and problems. Your humor must be relevant to the audience and should help to show them that you are one of them or that you understand their situation and are in sympathy with their point of view. Depending on whom you are addressing, the problems will be different. If you are talking to a group of managers, you may refer to the disorganized methods of their secretaries; alternatively if you are addressing secretaries, you may want to comment on their disorganized bosses. Here is an example, which I heard at a nurses' convention, of a story which works well because the audience all shared the same view of doctors. A man arrives in heaven and is being shown around by St. Peter. He sees wonderful accommodations, beautiful gardens, sunny weather, and so on. Everyone is very peaceful, polite and friendly until, waiting ina line for lunch, the new arrival is suddenly pushed aside by a man in a white coat, who rushes to the head of the line, grabs his food and stomps over to a table by himself. “Who is that?" the new arrival asked St. Peter. “On, that's God," came the reply, “but sometimes he thinks he's a doctor."If you are part of the group which you are addressing, you will be in a position to know the experiences and problems which are common to all of you and it'll be appropriate for you to make a passing remark about the inedible canteen food or the chairman's notorious bad taste in ties. With other audiences you mustn't attempt to cut in with humor as they will resent an outsider making disparaging remarks about their canteen or their chairman. You will be on safer ground if you stick to scapegoats like the Post Office or the telephone system. If you feel awkward being humorous, you must practice so that it becomes more natural. Include a few casual and apparently off-the-cuff remarks which you can deliver in a relaxed and unforced manner. Often it's the delivery which causes the audience to smile, so speak slowly and remember that a raised eyebrow or an unbelieving look may help to show that you are making a light-hearted remark.Look for the humor. It often comes from the unexpected. A twist on a familiar quote “If at first you don't succeed, give up" or a play on words or on a situation. Search for exaggeration and understatements. Look at your talk and pick out a few words or sentences which you can turn about and inject with humor.41. To make your humor work, you should .A. take advantage of different kinds of audience.B. make fun of the disorganized people.C. address different problems to different people.D. show sympathy for your listeners.42. The joke about doctors implies that, in the eyes of nurses, they are ..A. impolite to new arrivals.B. very conscious of their godlike role.C. entitled to some privileges.D. very busy even during lunch hours.43. It can be inferred from the text that public services .A. have benefited many people.B. are the focus of public attention.C. are an inappropriate subject for humor.D. have often been the laughing stock.44. To achieve the desired result, humorous stories should be delivered .A. in well-worded language.B. as awkwardly as possible.C. in exaggerated statements.D. as casually as possible.45. The best title for the text may be .A. Use Humor Effectively.B. Various Kinds of Humor.C. Add Humor to Speech.D. Different Humor Strategies.CMany visitors to Great Britain who make a point of visiting the famous cultural shrines of Stratford, Oxford, Cambridge and Canterbury are less aware of the equally rewarding historical interest and friendly individuality of the ancient capital, the city of Winchester. This Hampshire centre of around 30,000 inhabitants has welcomed (and on various occasions, repulsed a succession of visitors for nearly three thousand years. Early tribes occupied it from time to time, and much later the Roman colonizers established a commercial centre with solidly-constructed straight roads radiating from it. It was Alfred the Great who, in the ninth century, made the small town the national centre of learning, though his stature dominating the main street recalls the warrior with raised crosslink sword. Norman succeeded Saxon and soon the cathedral, one of the loveliest and richest in architectural interest in England, was being erected. A College was founded in the fourteenth century and even though a decline in the wool trade led to a period of economic stagnation, the College maintained the town’s tradition of learning and is one of the most famous public schools of today.Present-day traffic has destroyed much of the peace of the City centre. Private cars and buses which surge through the narrow streets at weekends may be supplemented on weekdays by lorries roaring on their way to Southampton. And yet away from the busier roads, the prevailing atmosphere remains one of the calm meditation contentment. From the smooth sun-flecked lawns of the close, patterned with leaf shadows from gently stirring foliage, rises the Cathedral, its comfortable, square, late Norman tower, its Norman transepts and severe Gothic nave suggesting that the beauty created by man, though not imperishable, may survive wars and revolutions, and represent theendurance of traditional values even in an age of undignified scurrying change. Certain houses round the Close may have provided homes for the loyal subjects of the first Queen Elizabeth when Shakespeare was learning to write. The Youth Hostel, a mill standing on the city’s river, is more than two hundred years old. In well-mannered unobtrusiveness, the old buildings of the main street blend with the new, and a walk through the town centre is one of the enjoyable discoveries. The rounded hills of Southern England, among which the city is built, shelter a countryside of farms and picturesque villages, where, despite motor transport and television, many of the old rural traditions and mental attitudes are preserved.Winchester belongs to its surroundings: it is the appropriate centre of a region of prosperous, quite, richly-green countryside. Lively, up-to-date are friendly, it maintains very many English traditions of fine domestic and ecclesiastical architecture, of graciousness and imperturbability, of richly inventive variety and peaceful dignity which are among the highest achievements of all those English planners and designers who created the heritage we now enjoy.46. In some regions, temperature rose several degrees in less than a century. Sea levels shot up nearly 400 feet, flooding coastal settlements and forcing people to migrate inland. Deserts spread throughtout the world as vegetation shifted drastically in North America, Europe and Asia. After driving many of the animals around them to near extinction, people were forced to abandon their old way of life for a radically new survival strategy that resulted in widespread starvation and disease. The adaptation was farming: the global-warming crisis that gave rise to it happened more than 10,000 years ago.As environmentalists convene in Rio de Janeiro this week to ponder the global climate of the future, earth scientists are in the midst of a revolution in understanding how climate has changed in the past--- and how those changes have transformed human existence. Researchers have begun to piece together an illuminating picture of the powerful geological and astronomical forces that have combin ed to change the planet’s environment from hot to cold, wet to dry and back again over a time period stretching back hundreds of millions of year. Most important, scientisits are beginning to realize that climate changes have had a major impact on the evolution of the human species. New research now suggests that climate shifts have played a key role in nearly every significant turning point in human evolution: from the dawn of primates some 65 million years ago to human ancestors rising up to walk on two legs, from the huge expansion of the human brain to the rise of agriculture. Indeed, the human history has not been merely touched by global climate change, some scientists argue, it has in some instances been driven by it.The new research has profound implications for the environmental summit in Rio. Among other things, the findings demonstrate that dramatic climate change is nothing new for planet Earth. The begign global environment that has existed over the past 10,000 years---during which agriculture, writing, cities and most other features of civilization appeared---is a mere bright spot in a much larger pattern of widely varying climate over the ages.In fact, the pattern or climate change in the past reveals that Earth’s climate will almost certainly go through dramatic changes in the future----even without the influence of human ativity.46. 北京导游口试英语题一:明清时代的天安门及天安门广场[精彩]

北京导游口试英语题一:明清时期的天安门及天安门广场题一:明清时期的天安门及天安门广场(天安门城楼;天安门前设施;“T”字形广场;文东武西;长安左门及长安右门;千步廊;大明门;正阳门)I’m very pleased to serve as your guide today. Now we’re going to visit the Tian’anmen.First, I’d like to give you some information about it.Tian’anmen means the Gate of Heavenly Peace. It is located in the center of Beijing and stands on the northern end of the Tian’anmen Squa re.It was first built in 1420 in the Ming Dynasty and was originally called the Gate of Heavenly Succession. At the end of the Ming Dynasty in 1644, it was seriously damaged in a war. When it was rebuilt in 1651 in the Qing Dynasty, the name was changed to T ian’anmen.Dur ing the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Tian’anmen served as the main entrance of the former Imperial City.It was also the place where the important ceremonies took place. The most famous “Imperial Edict Issued by Golden Phoenix” was held here.Tian’anmen rostrum is 34.7 meters high.It has five passages.During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the passage in the middle was especially reserved for the emperor himself. The river in front of rostrum is called the Outer Golden River.Spanning over it are seven arched stone bridges known as the Golden Water Bridges, the stone bridges have different names. The middle one was for the emperor only, so it was called Imperial Bridge. The two bridges on each side were used by the royal family members and therefore, they were called Royals’Bridges. The two bridges farther out were Ministerial Bridges for the civil and military officials above the third rank. The remaining two bridges in front of the Alter of Land and Grain to the west, and the Supreme Ancestral Temple to the east, were for the official below the fourth rank, called Common Bridges. The two pairs of stone lions by the Gate of Tian’anmen served as guardians in the old days. They gazed toward the middle axis guarding the emperor’s walkway. Now, take a careful look at the lions on each side. They are different, aren’t th ey? Just guess which is the father and which is the mother.Ur, you may get it.The one on the east playing a ball is the husband, and the other with a cub is the wife. Now let’s focus on the pair of well sculpted white marble columns in front of the rostrum. In Chinese, they are called “Huabiao”.Behind the gate of Tian’anmen, stands another pair of columns. Each Huabiao is 10 meters high and 20 tons weight. The beasts sitting on the columns are called hou, a legendary animal.During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Tian’anmen Square had a capital letter “T” shape, not as we see today. At that time, the Imperial Way used to run from south to north through the center of the square. The “Thousand-Step-Corridor” used to be along each side of the Imperial Way.The southern end of the square stood the Gate of Great Ming in the Ming Dynasty. To the north of the square in front of Tian’anmen, the Left Chang’an Gate is on the east and the Right Chang’an Gate on the west just built on Chang’an Avenue. In the old days, after the Palace Examination, the top competitors would go through the Left Chang’an Gate, hence thegate was nicknamed the “Dragon Gate”.However, the Right Chang’an Gate was just for the criminals. At that time, the criminals were sent to pass through the right gate after the Autumn Trial, just as they were brought to th e tiger’s mouth, so it was nicknamed “Tiger Gate”.As I just mentioned, to the east and west of the Imperial Way, there used to be the “Thousand-Step-Corridor”, which had 110 rooms on each side, facing east and west, and 34 rooms facing north reaching toward the Left Ch ang’an Gate and Right Chang’an Gate.Totally, there were 288 rooms along the Corridor. Some of them were used as warehouses, some as temporary court of offices. In the central part of the square outside the red wall, there were government offices, all designed according t o the “civil east and military west” pattern. On the east of the square, the present site of the museums today, there used to be civil ministries offices such as Ministry of Personnel, Ministry of Revenue, Ministry of Rites, Ministry of Works, the Imperial Clan Court, Imperial Academy of Medicine, National Academy, etc. Now, I’d like to say something about the Gate of Great Ming.In the early days of the Ming Dynasty, a gate was built right on the present site of Chairman Mao Memorial Hall and it was called “The Gate of Great Ming”, which served as the south gate of the imperial city.Later in the Qing Dynasty, it was changed into “the Gate of Great Qing” by the Qing Emperor. It was again renamed as “the Gate of China” in 1912.At the southern end of the square stands the Front Gate, also known as the Zheng Yang Gate.Actually, it is the South Front Gate of the inner city.It was one of the nine city gates in the old city of Beijing and was built in 1420 in the early MingDynasty, but was rebuilt and renovated several times. In the old days, this gate was a passage of entry and exit reserved for the emperor. The tower in front of the gate is the Arrow Tower.Originally, the gate and the tower were connected by two walls on both sides which looked like a jar shape, so it was also called Jar City. The double-gate system was constructed at the main city gates for better protection of the old city of Beijing.Actually the Arrow Tower served as the first block in defending the city during the time of war.For instance, if the enemy broke through the tower, the defending solders could move back to the inner city with the gate shut from inside while the enemy was still outside the city, so the Arrow Tower was a defensive project in the old days.。
