I thought, “I can do that for Montreal.” With little hesitation, I devoted the next five years of my life to the project.I never walked through any shabby (破旧的) neighborhoods. From one end of my map to the other, all houses were well looked after. People went to great lengths to decorate their homes, and with this came one of the great pleasures of my walks: the different measures they took to decorate their frontage (正面). I discovered that pigs are a popular decorative element throughout the city. The type that is dressed up as humans, I mean. I saw pigs wearing dresses, shirts, and even swimming costumes.Every outing has its wonders. Never assume a neighborhood has little of interest to offer. You must be trained to seek out strange things. Otherwise, you might never spot the clothes on the sidewalks. If I stopped to collect everything I saw lying around abandoned, I could fit out a small country. Where did they come from? How did people lose their shoes while walking out ? A puzzle. As my project progressed, I felt like I owned the city. I could get off at any subway station and my feet remembered the route to the best shops. There was enough fun in my walks that I’d have a few laughs and feel more light-hearted than when I left.Anyone can get in on this walking game. I admit with some shame. I used to huddle (蜷缩) in my part of town, feeling isolated, but walking its streets has truly opened my eyes to Montreal’s full menu. Now I’m quite satisfied with what I obtain. So just head to a neighborhood to nose around. I can assure you that you’ll feel like a pioneer with the discoveries you bring back. 4.Why did the author decide to walk the streets of Montreal?A.She wanted to collect strange things.B.She wanted to do some research.C.She had to conduct a project.D.She drew inspiration from an article.5.What do we know about the neighborhoods in Montreal?A.The shabby houses are abandoned.B.People enjoy dressing up as pigs.C.People enjoy decorating their houses.D.All the houses are equal in length.6.What amazed the author during her trips?A.The houses in good condition.B.The clothes left on sidewalks.C.The routes of subway stations.D.The animals walking on the streets.7.How did the author feel on her walk?A.Cheerful and content.B.Excited and energetic.C.Relieved and grateful.D.Puzzled and upset.Jackdaws (寒鸦) are the smallest member of the crow family. They often live in a crowd. Indeed, when cold weather comes, they gather in the hundreds (and sometimes thousands) every evening so that they can sleep in the same place. If you’ve ever heard jackdaws during their evening gatherings and morning departures, you’ll know they are not quiet birds. Despite being fairly low-volume during the day, they are really loud on either side of their night-time get-togethers. Why might this be?A team of the Cornish Jackdaw Project set out to determine why jackdaws are so noisy before they depart from their sleeping spot. The team’s theory was that the morning calls might be a jackdaw version of“voting”. The researchers suspected that each individual’s call might count as an “I’m in!”. When a certain amount of “I’m in!”s are called —and so a certain volume of noise is reached -the group might then depart as a unit.To test this idea, the researchers artificially increased the level of calls during the jackdaws’natural morning calls. Their expectation was that, if jackdaws really are “voting with their voice” to decide when to depart the sleeping site, artificially adding calls would make them leave earlier than they naturally would have done. Subsequent experiments confirmed their expectation. The team therefore showed that jackdaws use their calls as a sort of voting system. You might wonder why this happens. The researchers suggest that individual jackdaws benefit from the voting system because they are less at risk of being killed and they can get more access to social information — such as where to find food.So the loud calls of jackdaws in the morning are therefore not the pure chaos it sounds like. If you are ever being driven mad by the sound in the morning, you can find comfort in the fact that the louder they get, the sooner they will leave you in peace.8.What aspect of jackdaws confused scientists?A.Their strong team spirit.B.Their preference for noisy habitats.C.Their collective sleeping habit.D.Their unusual calling behavior.9.What happened to the jackdaws when artificial calls were added?A.They stopped calling together.B.They left their sleeping spot earlier.C.They became noisier and more active.D.They changed their sleeping location. 10.What does the voting system mean to individual jackdaws?A.A signal of seeking food.B.A strategy for better survival.C.A way to attract potential partners.D.A method of displaying social skills. 11.What can be the best title for the text?A.Jackdaws are Noise Makers.B.Jackdaws Have a Complex V oting System.C.Jackdaws ‘Vote’ to Make a Group Decision.D.Jackdaws ‘V ote’ to Choose Their Group Leaders. It was extremely generous of the people of France to give the American people the Statue of Liberty, especially as the money was raised by donations from the public who recognized what the countries had in common. After all, both nations had fought revolutions to secure their nationhood.Nowadays, it seems as though the gift has been returned with interest with the foundation ofEuro Disney near Paris. Nevertheless, many French people feel it symbolizes a kind of “cultural colonialism (殖民主义)”. To tell the truth, I would not welcome the presence of such a theme park in the middle of England, for the same reason. Mind you, neither England nor France have ever been afraid to export their own culture and values.Anyway, it is not difficult to understand why they chose to build Euro Disney near Paris. It is a geographically logical site, in the center of continental Europe, right by the capital city with its own attractions and so on. All the same, was it a culturally logical decision? There is the issue of “cultural colonialism” which I have already mentioned. What’s more, do the French need Mickey Mouse when they have their own cartoon hero in the form of the brave little Gaul, Asterix? Euro Disney’s rival the Parc Asterix has proved a popular destination for families wanting a day out. By the way, Parc Asterix is an easy drive from Paris too. Millions of dollars have been poured into Euro Disney to provide a top-class attraction but the thing is, can visitors expect an authentic American welcome? The answer must surely be “no”! There again, Euro Disney is a cheaper option for most Europeans than going all the way to the States. All in all I would rather create theme parks which celebrated my own heroes than accept those from elsewhere. In a word, this is because it is not always possible to transport culture — like some wines they do not travel well. In the future I will take my family to Florida to Disney World and the Magic Kingdom. However, until that day arrives we won’t be going to Euro Disney. There is a time and place for everything.12.What is many French people’s attitude toward Euro Disney?A.They are unhappy with it.B.They show no interest in it.C.They warmly welcome it.D.They think it a reward for the Statue ofLiberty.13.Why did the Americans choose to build Euro Disney near Paris?A.It was a culturally logical decision.B.It symbolized the two countries’ friendship.C.There were no theme parks near Paris.D.The location had a geographical advantage. 14.What does the underlined word “rival” in paragraph 3 mean?A.Partner.B.Competitor.C.Neighbor.D.Customer. 15.Which of the following is the author’s opinion?A.Euro Disney can’t provide real American service.B.Parc Asterix is more expensive than Euro Disney.C.Theme parks should accept popular heroes.D.American culture isn’t popular around the world.Sometimes, it’s good to be bored“I am dying of boredom,” complains the young wife Yelena in Chekhov’s 1897 play Uncle Vanya. Of course, if Yelena were around today, we know what she would do: pull out her smartphone and find something fun. Today it is easy to get rid of boredom. 16 That is the finding of two fascinating recent studies. In one, researchers asked subjects to do something boring, like copying out numbers from a phone book, and then take tests of creative thinkings. The result? 17 In the second study, subjects gave more answers to a word test than a non-bored control group after being forced to watch a dull screensaver.“An restless mind hungers for stimulation, so boredom becomes a seeking state,” says Sandi Mann, the psychologist at the University of Central Lancashire. “ 18 ” Parents will tell you that kids with “nothing to do” will eventually invent some fun games to play — with a cardboard box, a light switch, whatever. The problem, the researchers worry, is that these days we don’t struggle to overcome these slow moments. “ 19 ” Mann says. “This might relieve us temporarily, but it shuts down the deeper thinking.” So here is an idea: Instead of always avoiding boredom, embrace and face it. Sometimes, anyway. Mann has found she gets some of her best thinking done when she is driving her car and therefore can’t be distracted by her phone.20 The good type inspires you to see what can come of it. The bad type, in contrast, tires you and makes you feel like you can’t be bothered to do anything. An important part of our modern task, then, is learning to evaluate these different types of boredom — to distinguish the useful kind from the harmful one.A.And there is, of course, bad boredom.B.Bored subjects came up with more creative ideas.C.But what if boredom is a meaningful experience?D.These moments are a lot more valuable than expected.E.Actually, tips on getting away from boredom are countless.F.We try to kill every moment of boredom with mobile devices.G.When not satisfied with your state, you’re seeking and engaged.二、完形填空On a June morning, Nicolo 21 working the whole night at a factory in Turin. My husband suggested we give her a computer to play against.I wasn’t sure my mother was ready for it. After all, it had taken 15 years to persuade her to buy an electric cooker. Even so, we packed up our old computer and delivered it to my parents’ home. And so began my mother’s adventure in the world of computers. It also marked the beginning of an unusual teaching task for me. I’d taught people of all ages, but I never thought I would be teaching my mother how to do anything. She had been the one teaching me all my life: to cook and sew, to enjoy the good times and put up with the bad. Now it was my turn to give something back.It wasn’t easy at the beginning. There was so much to explain and to introduce. Slowly but surely, my mother caught on, making notes in a little notebook. After a few months of Scrabble and other games, I decided it was time to introduce her to word processing. This proved to be a bigger challenge to her, so I gave her some homework. I asked her to write me a letter, using different letter types, colors and spaces.“Are you this demanding with your kindergarten pupils?” she asked.“No, of course not,” I said. “They already know how to use a computer.”My mother isn’t the only one experiencing a fast personal growth period. Thanks to the computer, my father has finally got over his phone allergy. For as long as I can remember, any time I called, my mother would answer. Dad and I have had more phone conversations in the last two months than we’ve had in the past 20 years.4.Why did the author decide to give her mother a computer?A.To help her through the bad times.B.To make her life more enjoyable.C.To support her in doing her homework.D.To let her have more chances to write letters.5.What does the author do according to the text?A.She is a teacher.B.She is a cook.C.She is a housewife.D.She is a computer engineer.6.Why did the author ask her mother to write her a letter?A.To keep in touch with her mother.B.To free her mother from heavy housework.C.To practice what her mother had learned.D.To prevent her mother from using the telephone.7.What happened to the author’s father after the computer was brought home?A.He played even more games.B.He became skilled at it.C.He lost interest in cooking.D.He took more phone calls.According to new research from the University of Cambridge in England, sheep are able to recognize human faces from photographs. The farm animals, which are social and have large brains, were previously known to be able to recognize one another, as well as familiar humans. However, their ability to recognize human faces from photos alone is novel (新奇的).The recent study, the results of which were published in the journal Royal Society: Open Science, shows the woolly creatures could be trained to recognize still images of human faces, including those of former President Barack Obama and actress Emma Watson.First, the sheep were trained to get close to certain images by being given food rewards. Later, they were able to recognize the images for which they had been rewarded. The sheep could even recognize images of faces shown at an angle.“Anyone who has spent time working with sheep will know that they are smart, individual animals who are able to recognize their handlers,” said Professor Jenny Morton, who led theCambridge study. “We’ve shown with our study that sheep have advanced face-recognition abilities, comparable with those of humans and monkeys.”Recognizing faces is one of the most important social skills for human beings, and some disorders of the brain, including Huntington’s disease, have a bad effect on this ability.“Sheep are long-lived and have brains that are similar in size and complexity to those of some monkeys. That means they can be useful models to help us understand disorders of the brain, such as Huntington's disease, which develop over a long time and influence cognitive (认知的) abilities. Our study gives us another way to study how these abilities change.” Morton said. 8.According to the new research, what’s unusual about sheep?A.They have large brains.B.They can recognize their owners.C.They can recognize human faces from photographs.D.They know the differences between animals and humans.9.How did the researchers train the sheep?A.By giving food rewards.B.By showing photos of famous people.C.By guiding them to follow their handlers.D.By showing photos of humans and monkeys by turns.10.What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?A.Sheep are more clever than monkeys.B.The new discovery is helpful to study cognitive ability changes.C.The sheep’s face-recognition ability may prevent brain disorders.D.The face-recognition ability is the most important skill for sheep.11.What’s the main idea of the passage?A.It discusses the life of sheep.B.It’s about a wonderful scientist.C.It tells us a new discovery about sheep.D.It shows how sheep recognize human faces.E-wasteThe Republic of Korea is dealing with increasing totals of waste from electronic products -“e-waste”.Now, some local governments in the Republic of Korea are starting special e-waste recycling programs. The city of Seoul throws out about 10 tons of e-waste each year. About 20 percent of that goes to the Seoul Resource (资源) Center, also known as the SR Center. There, electronic products are taken apart so that valuable metals like gold or copper can be extracted (提取) and reused. Korean officials say it is a $3.8 billion-dollar industry.Ji Un-geun is the CEO of the SR Center. He says reusing electronic parts is not only about making money and the final goal of this program is to protect the environment. He says, “our planet has a limited total of natural resources. Our company contributes to an eco-friendly society by saving these materials.”The Seoul city government partnered with the SR Center to collect e-waste. Lee Tae-hong lives in the city of Seoul. He says reusing electronic parts is also about protecting personal information from attack. He says, “If electronic products like phones are not taken apart and reused, then they could illegally end up in other countries, and personal information could be stolen.”Koreans keep buying more and more electronic products. And in general, every Korean buys a new mobile phone every 18 months. Lee Joo-hong is with Green Consumers (消费者) Net-work. He says, “People change their phones so quickly partially because companies offer special deals to buy new products. And Korean consumers do not want to feel left out by not having the latest model.”Ji Un-geun says that consumer behavior is a big reason why old phones continue to appear at the recycling center. But he says he is doing his part to reduce that. He says, “I have had this same phone for 10 years. It is what I can do to help protect our natural resources.”12.We can learn that the final aim of the SR Center’s program is to ________.A.extract valuable metals from e-wasteB.make more money from reusing metalsC.recycle natural resources at a lower priceD.protect the environment from being polluted13.According to Lee Joo-hong, Koreans like to buy new phones to ________.A.experience a green life B.keep up with the latest fashionC.show off their wealth to neighbors D.get more money from the companies14.Ji Un-geun has used the same phone for ten years because ________.A.he can’t afford to buy a new one B.he has a habit of using old thingsC.he tries to help save natural resources D.he stores all his information in the phone 15.What is the main idea of the passage?A.Koreans collect metals from e-waste.B.Koreans attempt to reuse more e-waste.C.Koreans change their phones many times.D.Koreans waste too many electronic products.Maybe you are an average boy or girl. If I had an idea, I had to build it right now using what I could find around me,” says Danish artist Thomas Dambo. When Dambo was seven years old, he bought a mountain of cushions (垫子) from a nearby market to build a game room in his parents’ house. As a teenager, he built a “crazy” castle in his backyard.Years later, 42-year-old Dambo is proudly showing his latest work: a giant (巨人) called Little Lui. Five meters tall, Little Lui is one of the six giants placed in the corners of Peel Region of Western Australia, which will be on show for at least a year. This work makes Dambo’s giants up to 99 around the world. His gentle giants have found homes in many different countries, as far as the United States, Belgium, China, Denmark, South Korea and now in Australia.“For me, giants represent (代表) the voice of nature,” Dambo says. This deep respect for nature is the focus of Dambo’s building works. Dambo’s giants are made almost from local recycled wood: their faces from second-hand furniture and their hair from tree branches and leaves. Taking about 750 hours to complete, each giant is built out in nature.“I hope by visiting the giants, people will think of rubbish as a resource. I think it’s really important that next generations are connected to nature,” Dambo says. “That’s why I tried to build the giants to attract young people. I want people to be inspired and to realize they don’t need a lot to create something big and beautiful.”4.Which of the following can best describe young Dambo?A.Creative.B.Homesick.C.Powerful.D.Frightened. 5.What can we know about Little Lui?A.It is kept underground.B.It’s Dambo’s first giant.C.It will be shown to the public.D.It will be sent to Denmark.6.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?A.The comments on the giants.B.The appearance of the giants.C.The basic theme of the giants.D.The expensive materials of the giants. 7.What does Dambo plan to do with his giants?A.Inspire more people to take adventures.B.Encourage the young to approach nature.C.Help people spend less time playing games.D.Call on the young to save natural resources.Though the FIFA World Cup came to an end in December 2022, the people of a particular city in China were busy making soccer history of their own.Zibo in Shandong province is called “the home of soccer ball”, being the birthplace of the ancient Chinese sport of cuju. Modern soccer sport started in England, but cuju won recognition (认可) from FIFA, as the earliest form of soccer in 2004.“Side-flicking”, “chest down” and “shoulder stopper” are some of the key moves acquired by cuju players. Li Weipeng,34, from Linzi district of Zibo city, is a seventh-generation inheritor (传承人) of cuju. He has been practicing these skills for 18 years.Acquiring different cuju skills is not easy. “At the beginning, I spent eight hours a day practicing juggling (颠) a ball. It was tiring,” Li said. He is now able to juggle a ball with his foot over 10,000 times in a row (连续地).Teaching students cuju moves is a part of Li’s job. The traditional Chinese sport cuju is now popular at primary and middle schools in Linzi. Its moves have been adapted (改编) into dances and morning exercises. “Students show great interest in playing cuju, which encourages me to promote (推广) the ancient sport,” Li added. Moreover, cuju has also become a platform for cultural exchanges. During the World Cup in Qatar, Li introduced cuju at a China-Qatar youth exchange activity held in Doha. He led Chinese and Qatari youth players, wearing traditional cuju costumes, to experience the ancient game. Many soccer fans watched them, cheered for them and gave them the thumbs-up. Many people were curious and wanted to communicate with the cuju players.8.Where is the birthplace of cuju?A.Zibo.B.England.C.Doha.D.Qatar.9.How old was Li Weipeng when he began to learn cuju?A.14 years old.B.16 years old.C.18 years old.D.34 years old. 10.How did Li Weipeng feel when he first practiced juggling a ball?A.Excited.B.Curious.C.Tired.D.Confident. 11.What encourages Li to promote cuju?A.His experience in cuju.B.The popularity of soccer.C.The need of cultural exchanges.D.Students’ interest in cuju.It was a quiet early afternoon in the library, and we librarians were enjoying a chat at the library desk. Suddenly, a regular reader, who had been reading a magazine, marched up to us, gave us an annoyed “Shush (嘘)!” and went back to her seat.Shocked into silence, we tried not to laugh. How strange for a group of librarians to be shushed by a reader! Shouldn’t it be the other way around?Well, it seems hard to explain. If you’re a baby boomer (婴儿潮出生的人) like me, you probably remember libraries as places of adults’ silent reading. These days, however, libraries are more like busy community centers, where being noisy to some degree is the new normal, especially when kids are taking part.I am a loud librarian. My voice is naturally on the louder side. The hundreds of programs I led as a children’s librarian were filled with singing, dancing, movement exercises and cheerful readings of books with crowds of children and their caregivers. No shushing allowed!Growing knowledge about the importance of kids and teens learning through hands-on experiences has since caused a sea change in how public libraries connect with young readers. These types of programs like board games, poetry reading and story times certainly aren’t designed to be silent. But it’s a balancing act. Not all readers—or librarians—like the idea of a noisy library. It’s clear to me now that on the day my colleagues and I were shushed by a reader, we should have been using our “library voices” as we talked. Still, it’s unlikely that libraries will ever return to the days when they were places of silence. There’s just too much fun and learning happening. I heartily agree with my friend Rachel Payne, an early-childhood service educator at the BrooklynPublic Library, who told me, “When I visit a library and it is quiet, I always feel a bit sad. A library where conversations are happening and tables are full is a very good thing!”12.How did the author think of the shush from a reader?A.Unexpectedly funny.B.Really annoying.C.Quite necessary.D.Very heartwarming.13.What can be inferred about today’s libraries?A.They serve kids only.B.They become quieter.C.They are less popular.D.They have different functions.14.Why does the author quote Rachel Payne?A.To show different voices.B.To express the author’s idea.C.To make the end interesting.D.To promote a new reading method. 15.What is the best title for the text?A.How to Act in the Library B.It’s OK for a Library to Be NoisyC.Why to Keep Silent in the Library D.It’s Necessary for Librarians to ChangeIn the coming decade, space agencies and private space companies like SpaceX are planning to build a base on the Moon and Mars. While scientists are already building rockets for the journey, for long-term human settlements on them, astronauts will need fuel to carry out daily tasks. Many have suggested hydrogen (氢). But a group of scientists is working on turning CO2 in the atmosphere into jet fuel. As Mars is rich in CO2 and the lunar surface has a high concentration of CO2, it may be a feasible solution. For now the team of scientists at the University of Oxford is focusing on making jet fuel for the aviation (航空) industry. As the aviation industry releases over 900 million tons of CO2 every year, to battle climate change, it is necessary to turn the tide. So far aviation scientists have tried to use other energy resources like electricity to fly. But such flights are limited to short distances. For long-distance flights, there is no alternative yet.The concept of turning CO2 into jet fuel is not new. Previously, other similar methods had to rely on expensive catalysts (催化剂) like cobalt to speed up the chemical reaction. But what Oxford scientists suggest is adding a cheap iron-based catalyst and hydrogen to turn CO2 into liquid fuel. As the process would not require using fossil fuel, it will make the industry carbonneutral (碳中和的).The scientists tested the new catalyst in a lab at 300°C and at 10 times the air pressure at sea level. The entire process took 20 hours and turned 38 percent of CO2 into new chemicals. About 48 percent of the chemicals were jet fuel hydrocarbon and the rest were other by-products that are used in the production of plastic.Professor Peter Edwards, a lead scientist in the project, said the new method could be improved in two to three years to produce jet fuel in large quantities. “This is a really exciting, potentially revolutionary advance. Our vision is that the world can see that CO2 collected can be used as an energy carrier to enable sustainable aviation.”16.Which word can best explain “feasible” underlined in paragraph 1?A.Unique.B.Practical.C.Time-tested.D.Quick.17.What problem does the aviation industry face?A.It is suffering from a serious fuel shortage.B.The traditional jet fuel is much too expensive.C.Climate change partly disturbs long-distance flights.D.Its alternative energy resources are not powerful enough.18.What do we know about the Oxford scientists’ method of fuel-making?A.It is green and cost-saving.B.It is complex and time-consuming.C.It runs tests in natural environment.D.It starts with immediate chemical reaction.19.What’s the purpose of the author?A.To attract people to explore the space.B.To inform us of a breakthrough in fuel research.C.To warn us the dangers of climate change.D.To encourage us to work in the aviation industry.Being a teenager is difficult, as many people expect you to be perfect in many different things — school, sports, chores, etc. 20 What really matters is trying to be better, and having the confidence to pursue your dreams. The following are some tips for you to deal with theimperfection of life.Make a series of goals to help reach your dreams. 21 You will not become the most popular kid at school, the best soccer player, or an award-winning filmmaker overnight, but you can start taking steps now to make these goals a reality.22 Volunteering, tutoring a friend, and helping your parents around the house aren’t just nice things to do, and they can improve your own well-being. Doing good makes you feel good and it builds a loving, supportive network of people around you.Give yourself some “me time” each day. Each day, take 15 minutes or more to yourself.23 Distance yourself from other people, if only for a few moments, and relax. Let your brain free from all the stresses that hit you each day. This is one of the easiest, best ways to find yourself and your goals.Remember that life isn’t perfect and that is a good thing. 24 But these issues are all chances to improve yourself, and how you react to the bad times is far more important than the bad times themselves.A.Have an active social life.B.Make time to help others.C.Perfection only comes one small step at a time.D.Exercise! It helps with stress, and may even make you happier than usual.E.However, true perfection is impossible.F.There will always be mistakes, setbacks, misunderstandings, and bad luck.G.You could read, listen to music, go for a walk, or simply lay in bed.二、完形填空Afraid to have a start, I was walking slowly into my first school in America. Our farm is at least a dozen miles fromeven the most basic of services. Therefore, I take weekly trips to the shop toget supplies. About a month ago, I finished loading up the car and was about toleave, when a piece of paper on the ground caught my eye. I picked it up andread it carefully. It wasa receipt from the State Motor Vehicle Division recording the owners payment of her Vehicles Registration fees. I looked over the receipt for contact or any personal data, perhaps a license tag or telephone number. I checked the date, the fees paid, noted the name of the owner and pocketed the paper. I concluded that the best and easiest step to take was to put the receipt in an envelope and send it to the owner first the next morning.By the end of the week, I received a beautiful “thank you “ letter from a woman containing a handwritten message and a card. Workers plan to test thesystem next year in a specially built community called Quay Valley. The townwill be powered entirely by energy from the sun.TheHyperloop transport system is the idea of businessman Elon Musk. Dirk Ahlbornis head of Hyperloop Transportation Technologies. The system has been designed to operate above or below ground.Insidethe tube there is a low pressure environment very similar to an airplane that’shigh in the sky. So now the capsule travelling inside the tube doesn’t meetwith as much resistance, andtherefore can travel really fast with very little energy.DickAhlborn and his company will use an eight-kilometer track in Quay Valley tofind the best way to set up passenger traffic and repair capsules. A largersystem will cost an estimated 6-10billion dollars to build. If MrAhlborn and his company succeed, we may one day see these very fast Hyperloocapsules speeding through tubes around the world.(1)Quay Valley is said to be a special town because________.A . it is very passenger-friendly.B . it will be powered by solar energyC . the public transportation system is well developedD . the Hyperloop steel tubes will be produced there(2)We can learn from the text that the Hyperloop transport system________.A . travels along a pathway or trackB . mainly runs above groundC . was developed by a businessmanD . aims to operate environmentally friendly (3)Why can the Hyperloop capsules travel fast?A . Since then, the 21-year-old student from Beijing Foreign Studies University has remained a city-walk fan, believing it to be the best way to “rediscover a city”.“I visited Beijing before the start of my college life here, and it was a typical package tourduring which going to scenic spots and taking photos was a big thing. The crowded tourist attractions gave me the impression that Beijing was a noisy place,” Zhao said. With the increasing variety of travel choices, traditional group tours no longer satisfy people who are looking for a more personal and different travel experience and hoping to explore every part of the city in a more immersive (沉浸式的) way.Compared with tightly scheduled routes (路线) and picture-taking tours, city-walking focuses on free, casual and spontaneous (自发的) experiences. The trending city-walk culture, which encourages experiencing urban life with no transportation means except one’s legs and feet, has also made splashes on various social media platforms. On the video-sharing app Douyin, the Chinese version of Tik-Tok, a recent video about citywalk routes in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, has gained more than 171,000 likes, with 72,000 viewers of all ages adding the video to their favorites. For some, researchers lead them to think about the topic complicatedly: They provided background information in which opposite views were given, and the pairs were clearly told to “consider different perspectives (观点) .” For others, researchers simply contrasted (对比) opposing views and told the pairs, “ It is important to have a clear perspective.” A third group was given no directions. While the pairs who took a complex approach were able to write a joint (共同的) statement on their topic, less than half of the pairs who took a simplistic approach came to an agreement. Moreover, the pairs engaged in more complex discussions acted less defensively (防御性地), asked more questions of each other, and felt more positive during the discussions than those who had more black- and- white arguments or no direction at all.“Dealing with difficult issues has always been uncomfortable, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s something we should shy away from,” McQueen said. “Creating space to analyzenuance (细微差别) and to let young people experience nuance is difficult when there’s so much curriculum content to get through,” McQueen said. “But it’s trying to flesh out (充实) complexity and nuance that’s going to lead to a far greater willingness for people to just look for the areas of gray in life, rather than racing to judgments that are really easy and lazy.”12.What does “peers” underlined in the second paragraph mean?A.Roommates.B.Playmates.C.Workmates.D.Classmates. 13.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?A.A doubt about the research methods.B.An explanation of the research results.C.An introduction to the research process.D.The application of the research findings. 14.What does McQueen suggest in the last paragraph?A.It’s meaningful for students to deal with difficult issues.B.Students should shy away from uncomfortable things.C.It’s useless for students to learn curriculum content.D.Students prefer easy and lazy judgments.15.Who might be the target readers of the passage?A.Editors.B.Educators.C.Doctors.D.Students.How to Do Better in SchoolThe start of a new school year is a great opportunity to improve your grades and experience at school, but you can choose to do better at any point during the year! 16 .
