By this age, 26% see a credit card or overdraft (透支) as a way of extending their spending power.Pfeg predicts that these young people will find it much harder to avoid the serious unexpected dangers that have befallen many of their parents’ generation unless they receive good quality financial education while at school. It does seem odd that — unless parents step in — young people are left in the dark until they are cruelly introduced to the world of debt when they turn up at university. In a recent poll of over 8, 000 people, 97% supported financial education in schools, while 3% said it was a job for parents.1. The passage is mainly about _______.A. how to manage school lessonsB. how to deal with the financial crisisC. teaching young people about moneyD. teaching students how to study effectively2. It can be inferred from the first two paragraphs that _______.A. the author complains about the school educationB. pupils should not be taught to add up and subtractC. students have been taught to manage their financesD. laws on financial education have been effectively carried out3. The website and the consumer campaigner joined to _______.A. instruct the pupils to donate their pocket moneyB. promote the connection of schools and familiesC. ask the government to dismiss the parliamentD. appeal for the curriculum of financial education4. 高一英语暑假作业24组题人:史晓娟审核人:郝宏丽训练日期:月日For some students, especially those from poor families, taking a job is not a matter of choice, but necessity. They need to work to save for college, or even to supplement family income. Counselors should help students who have a real need to work improve time management skills and seek employment that helps their educational goals."College costs are high, and young adults also want the amenities (便利设施) that extra money brings,〞according to John B. Boshoven, counselor for continuing education at Community High School in Michigan. However, he warns, "School is my students , full -time job.〞Studies show that students who work are more confident and possess better time management skills than students who are not employed. In addition to offering a paycheck, some independence, and satisfaction, a part -time job can provide teenagers with both training and experience. Working teaches students about responsibility and can also reinforce (充实) what they are learning in school. "Colleges want to find candidates who demonstrate maturity, responsibility, independence, and initiative, and good workers certainly demonstrate those important character traits,〞Boshoven says. "Employers can write excellent recommendation letters for the students who have worked for them.〞On the other hand, experts agree that students who work more than 15 to 20 hours per week often experience lessened school success, which can lead to dropping out entirely. Working long hours can also limit opportunities to build friendships and explore interests that enhance a teenager ,s intellectual and emotional development. The major point that students should keep in mind is the importance of balance. Dan Crabtree, college and career counselor at Wheaton Academy in Illinois, explains, "We want our students to establish a healthy balance in life and work to maintain it throughout their lives.〞If working will interfere with completing school work, participating in extracurricular activities, spending time with family and friends, or getting enough rest, it may not be a wise decision.1. What ,s the purpose of the passage?A. To show how students can find a part -time job.B. To explain what is a part -time job.C. To stress the importance of students , part -time work.D. They argue that the best way to motivate students to read more is to offer them more choices.Not_all_educators_are_on_the_same_page,_however. They worry that students who choose trendy, less challenging titles over the classics won't be exposed to the great writing and key themes of important works of literature.Student reporters Donald and Sarah express their ideas about this new approach.Donald thinks that they should turn the page. Students should be allowed to select the books they read in English class. He says he and his classmates are allowed to pick their own books in class. That makes them more focused, and they look forward to class time. Tristin, a classmate of his at Clinton Middle School agrees. "I'm reading books that I want to read, which makes class more fun and interesting ,〞he says. Offering students a choice may also improve test scores. Studies by Professor John Guthrie of the University of Maryland found that students in grades 4 through 6 who had some choices in the books they read showed improved readingcomprehension skills during testing. Giving students the chance to decide what they read helps build a lifelong love for reading. Isn't that what we want for our students?Sarah holds a different view. She thinks teachers know more about books than students do. When an English teacher assigns a book, he or she keeps in mind the reading level of most students in the class. Students who choose their own books might be cheating themselves by picking books that are not up to their reading level or that are too difficult. Furthermore, a whole class can discuss a book it reads together. That makes it easier for some kids to understand what they are reading. "The students wouldn't be able to hold a meaningful conversation if they were all reading different books ,〞says Kristin, an English teacher at Fleetwood Area Middle School. "If they read the same book, their conversations would be more indepth.〞1. But within minutes, I was __14 , heading back to my seat.
Now I still have the 15 of that speech. My voice trembled(颤抖)a little, but 16 it was clear and strong. I'm proud of that tape. I achieved something I'd never 17 —I spoke in front of hundreds of people. 18 I didn't realize it at the time, the successful completion of that speech gave me the 19 to participate in class at college, to give oral reports, and to eventually break free of my 20 .
I never would have chosen to give a speech at graduation. But I'm glad I did. I know it may well turn out to be one of my shining moments.
