• People often get confused with the terms “England”, “Britain”, “Great Britain”, “United Kingdom”, and “British Isles”. Even some British people are not fully aware of the precise reality that these terms express.
The British Isles(不列颠群岛)
• The "British Isles" is a geographical term for a group of islands consisting of Great Britain, the whole of Ireland, and many other smaller surrounding islands.
• Great Britain and Northern Ireland together form the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland“, or UK.
The United Kingdom
• “The United Kingdom” is the abbreviated form for the official name “The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland“, which came into use in 1922 after the constitution of the Irish Free State (1922-1937), the former name of the Republic of Ireland.

Mineral resources
♦ Britain’s mineral resources were historically important, but today
most of these resources are either exhausted or produced in small quantities. Britain currently relies upon imports from larger, cheaper foreign supplies. Before and during the Roman occupation, about 2,000 years ago, Britain was noted for its tin mines, which were concentrated in Cornwall. The tin was mixed with copper to produce bronze, an important material in ancient times used for weapons and jewelry. Today nearly every tin mine in Britain has been exhausted and shut down. ♦ Britain’s small deposits of iron ore were critically important to the Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly because iron ore deposits were located close to rich deposits of coal. During the Industrial Revolution towns and cities sprang up close to these resources, and they remain among Britain’s leading urban areas. Today Britain imports iron, along with most other minerals used for industrial production, although small amounts of iron, zinc, and copper are still produced

英语国家概况课件 Chapter1, Land and People

V. The People
Britain has a population of 57,411,000 (1990). 90% of the population is urban and only 10% is rural. There is a great concentration of population in England. Of about 57 million people, 47 million live in England. 14 million live in London and south-eastern England.
I. Different Names for Britain and its Parts
About 100 years ago, as a result of its imperialist expansion, Britain ruled an empire that had one fourth of the world’s people and one fourth of the world’s land area. The two world wars greatly weakened Britain. The British Empire gradually disappeared and it was replaced by the British Commonwealth or the Commonwealth of Nations in 1931.
II. Geographical Features
• England: London, which is the largest populous and generally speaking the richest section. The highest peak of England is Scafell (978m). • Scotland: Edinburgh. There are three natural zones: the Highlands in the north, the central Lowlands, and the southern Uplands. Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in Britain (1,343m). • Wales: Cardiff. Snowdonia (1,085m) in the northwest is the highest mountain in Wales. • Northern Ireland: Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland.

People in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland consider it insulting and hate hearing Britain being referred to as “England” as it appears to ignore their existence. ❖England is only a constituent country in the UK, and a part of the island of Great Britain, together with Scotland and Wales.
