起初，她觉得很难，尤其是系鞋带。
玛莎很快就回来了。
她拿着一个托盘，玛丽的早餐在上面。
“那是什么?”玛丽粗鲁地问道。
“那是粥，”玛莎告诉她。
“我不吃。
扔掉它。
”“我不会扔掉好吃的东西。
”我们在家里总是很饿，因为我们从来没有足够的钱买食物。
浪费好食物是不对的。
”玛莎对玛丽很生气。
“我要吃点吐司和橘子酱，喝点茶，”玛丽说。
这粥你想怎么处理都可以。
她坐下来，开始吃早餐。
你应该在饭后出去，”玛莎说。
“你不应该一直呆在室内。
你在家里没有什么可做的。

在花园的一面墙的另一侧，玛丽能看到高大的树木。
她走向墙壁。
她寻找门。
但是没有。
她回到老人身边。
他有一只鸟坐在他的手上，他正跟它说话。
“那是什么鸟？”玛丽问他。
“这是红胸脯的知更鸟，”老人回答说。
“他是我的朋友。

“你认识一个叫迪肯的男孩吗？”玛丽问他。

“他喜欢这片荒野，大部分时间都在那里度过。
”这时候，这只鸟飞离了树，越过了果园的墙，停在果园外的树枝上。
“还有另一个花园，”玛丽说。
“但我找不到门。
”“没有门，”本说。
“没有门!我不相信，”玛丽大声说。
“过去有门，”本对她说，第十四页但是没有了已经十年了。
没有人能找到一扇门，所以你不用去找门。
那个花园不是你能去的。
走开，去玩”。
说完这些话，他转过身去，开始挖土。
第十五页第三章玛丽听到一声奇怪的叫声玛丽在这所房子里没有什么可做的。
所以她每天都在花园里散步。
她在早餐前就这样做了，新鲜的空气使她感到饥饿。
她饿得连粥都吃了并且喜欢上了它。
早饭后，玛丽在花园和荒野里散步。

有一天，她绕着没有门的墙走来走去。
突然，她听到一只鸟在唱歌。

第十九页第四章玛丽找到了一个秘密花园两天后，玛丽在和玛莎说话。
她现在不把她当佣人。
她把她看作朋友。
玛莎为她感到难过。
她知道她是多么的孤独。
“我给你带来了一件礼物，”她说。
