More will follow in the coming years. The Internet is about to start using the 16 languages of the world. People will soon be able to use addresses in characters (字符) other than those of the Roman alphabet (字母表). The change will also allow the suffix (后缀) to be expressed in 16 other alphabets, including traditional and simplified Chinese characters. But there are still some problems to work out. All this makes it difficult to decide exactly how much the tax is.There was a certain artist who was always very careful to pay the proper amount. One year, after posting his check as usual, he began to wonder if he had paid enough, and after a lot of work, with a pencil and paper, decided that he had not. He believed that he owed the government something. He was just writing another check to send to the tax-collector when the postman dropped a letter into the box at the front door. Some people subscribe (订阅) to as many as two or three newspapers. But why do people read newspapers? Five hundred years ago, news of important happenings —— battles lost and won, kings or rulers overthrown (推翻) or killed ——took months and even years to travel from one country to another. The news passed by word of mouth and was never accurate. Today we can read in our newspapers of important events that occur in far away countries on the same y they happen.Apart from supplying news from all over the world, newspapers give us a lot of other useful information. There are weather reports, radio, television and film guides, book reviews, stories and, of course, advertisements. The bigger ones are put in by large companies to bring attention to their products. They pay the newspapers thousands of dollars for the advertising space, but it is worth the money, for news of their products goes into almost every home in the country. For those who produce newspapers, advertisements are also very important. 11-12.2 大英2 重修考试复习题

11-12.2大英2 重修考试练习题第一. Reading Comprehension阅读理解题Passage one. The first true piece of sports equipment that man invented was the ball. In ancient Egypt, as everywhere, pitching(投掷) stones was a favorite children’s game. But a badly thrown rock could hurt a child. Looking for something less dangerous to throw, the Egyptians made what were probably the first balls. At first, balls were made of grass or leaves held together by vines(藤). Later they were made of pieces of animal skin sewed together and stuffed(塞满) with feathers or hay.Even though the Egyptians were warlike, they found time for peaceful games. Before long they had developed a number of ball games, each with its own set of rules. Perhaps they played ball more for instruction than for fun. Ball playing was thought of mainly as a way to teach young men the speed and skill they would need for war.1. Sound has a waste product, too, in the form of noise. Noise has been called unwanted sound. Noise is growing and it may get much worse before it gets any better.Scientists, for several years, have been studying how noise affects people and animals. They are surprised by what they have learned. Peace and quiet are becoming harder to find. Noise pollution is a threat that should be looked at carefully. There is a saying that it is so noisy that you can’t hear yourself think. Doctors who study noise believe that we must sometimes hear ourselves think. If we don’t, we may have headaches, other aches and pains, or even worse mental problems.Noise adds more tension(紧张) to a society that already faces enough stress. But noise is not a new problem. In ancient Rome, people complained so much about noise that the government stopped chariots(四轮马车)from moving through the streets at night!Ways of making less noise are now being tested. There are even laws controlling noise. We cannot return to the “good old days”of peace and quiet. But we can reduce noise —if we shout loudly enough about it .6. Why are scientists surprised by the findings in their noise study?A) Because the world is becoming more and more noisy.B) Because they have learned that noise is also a kind of pollution.C) Because noise is an unwanted waste for human beings..D) Because people knew little about noise before.7. What may happen if we cannot hear ourselves think?A) We may forget what we have thought about.B) Our thoughts may be disturbed.C) Our mind may be harmed.D) We may have difficulty finding the right words.8. His secretary requested a 10% salary raise. The problem was that 10% was a large raise compared to the 5% other employees had received. Was there a win-win(双赢)way out of this problem? As they looked at the possibilities, several ideas appeared. The company starts work at 8 am and closes at 5 pm. The manager learned that his secretary got caught in heavy traffic every evening on the way home. They agreed to have her work from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm. This saved her at least 20-25 minutes driving time, a benefit to her at little or no loss to the company. They then studied her job in detail. Before long they jointly developed a new idea which gave her more responsibilities, and, at the same time, more interesting work. Both parties benefitted from the changed arrangement of work. The raise itself was then discussed. A decision was made by agreeing on a 6% raise for three months and then an additional 12% later if the new responsibilities were properly performed.1. A conclusion that can be drawn from this passage is that _A.air pollution is not serious B.anyone can live to be 107C.country people should move to the city D.walking is a healthful exercisePassage ThreeFor any Englishman, there can never be any discussion as to who is the world’s greatest dramatist(剧作家).Only one name can possibly suggest itself to him:that of William Shakespeare Every Englishman has some knowledge, however slight,of the work of our greatest writer. All of US use words, phrases and quotations from Shakespeare’s writings that have become part of the common property of the English-speaking people. Most of the time we are probably unaware of the source of the words we used, rather like the old lady who was taken to see a performance of Hamlet and complained that it was full of well—known proverbs and quotations.Shakespeare, more perhaps than any other writer, makes full use of the great resources of the English language. Most of US use about five thousand words in our normal use of English;Shakespeare in his works used about twenty-five thousand. There is probably no better way for a foreigner to appreciate the richness and variety of the English language than by studying the various ways in which Shakespeare used it.Such a study is well worth the effort(it is not,of course, recommended to beginners)even though some aspects of English usage, and the meaning of many words, have changed since Shakespeare’s day.11. English people ______A.have never discussed who is the world’s greatest dramatistB.never discuss any issue concerning the world’s greatest dramatistC.are sure who is the world’s greatest dramatistD.do not care who is the world’s greatest poet and dramatist12.Every Englishman knows ______A.more or less about Shakespeare B.Shakespeare, but only slightlyC.all Shakespeare’s writings D.only the name of the greatest English writer 13.Which of the following is true?A.We use all the words, phrases and quotations from Shakespeare’s writings.B.Shakespeare’s writings have become the property of those who are learning to speak English.C.It is likely to be true that people often do not know the origins of the words they useD All the words people use are taken from the writings of Shakespeare14.What does the word “proverb” mean?A.Familiar sayings B.Shakespeare’s plays.C.Complaints.D.Actors and actresses.15.Why is it worthwhile to study the various ways in which Shakespeare used English? A.English words have cha nged a lot since Shakespeare’s time.B.By doing so one can be fully aware of the richness of the English languageC. English words are now being used in the same way as in Shakespeare’s timeD. Beginners may have difficulty learning some aspects of English usageIII. 单句翻译1、我们不仅尊重父母,而且我尽力不辜负他们的期望。

重点是本学期提供的两篇作文。
1. On Failure
2. To know the Society
1.大学生了解社会的必要性 2.了解社会的途径(大众媒介,社会服务等) 3.我打算怎么做
With the development of our society, the campus no longer is an "Ivory Tower". It is necessary for college students to go outside to get to know the world. They should acquire knowledge not only from books but also from the society. Thus(因此) they can adapt to society more quickly after they graduate from school. Science and technology are developing rapidly with each passing day. Most students can keep themselves informed by watching TV, listening to the radio, reading newspapers and using computers. It’s also good to take a part-time job, such as tutoring(辅导), or working in a restaurant. Any of these methods will enable students to get in touch with society. Summer vacation will soon be here. I’ve already enrolled(登记) to be a volunteer to help others. I think I can do well. Although I won’t be paid, the most important thing is that I can learn a lot about society.

She might have seven or eight children, and four or five of them lived till they were five years old. When the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties. After this, she could hardly find any work to make money because of the few opportunities and poor health. Today women marry younger and have fewer children. Usually a woman’s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five. She may live another thirty-five years and take paid work until sixty. This important change in women’s lives has also changed women’s economic position. Even a few years ago most girls left school and took a full-time job. However, when they married, they usually left work at once and never came back to it. Today, the school leaving age is sixteen. Many girls stay at school after that age. As women marry younger, more married women will only leave work just before their first child is born, and ma ny of them come back to work soon after. People have used shells, little rocks, gold, and silver as money.Later, coins were used as money. The first coins were made of gold and silver. Now they are made out of many different metals. Money today is also made out of something that can be folded. It’s made out of paper. Today mo st of our money is bills. Most people do some kind of work to get money. With that money, they can buy the things they want and need. This could be food, a car, or a trip. They can also save some. They would do this by putting it in a bank. They want to keep you under their protection as long as they can, and since they have always given you extra special care, they are afraid you won’ t be able to make it without their support. But I think you can and will make it on your own. Galileo lived three hundred years ago before men had watches for measuring time. In the sixteenth century there were very few clocks in the world and no watches. One day when Galileo was a young man of eighteen, he was in the great church of the city of Pisa where he lived. He was watching the motion of a light. He saw that as the light moved forward and back on its chain, it seemed to take the same time between turns, however far it went. He wanted to make sure whether he was right. He put his pulse rate, he measured the motion of the light as it went forward and back on its chain. He was right. He had the proof. He could prove that the time was the same, however short or long the journey of the light through the air was. Galileo had made a great discovery about the motion of a pendulum. Among other things this discovery made possible a better instrument for measuring time--- the pendulum clock.26. Then you should mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage OneThe Swedes are among the most charming peoples in Europe. And their charm comes from an apparent contradiction in the national character. They are extremely conservative in social relationships; within the family and when meeting friends and business acquaintances, their conduct is governed by strict social patterns. At the same time, they are one of the most ntellectually progressive people in the world. They are always open to new ideas. All social occasions in Sweden are regulated by rules and traditions. And these traditions are expressed in a specific ritual (仪式) made up of formal bows, handshakes, and greetings. When a visitor enters a Swedish home, he is invariably received with a "Welcome"; when he leaves, his host will tell him "You will be welcome again". These charming phrases are an indestructible part of Swedish social life and they give it an old-world flavor of good manners.Equally attractive is the Swedish acceptance of modern technological equipment. A traveller never needs to search for a telephone in Sweden: telephone booths are placed at regular intervals along the main streets and highways. And in church, for example, long benches are fitted with hearing aids for worshippers who may be hard of hearing. Swedish homes are among the best equipped in the world and travellers in Sweden find their journeys made easy by the use of the most efficient modern devices.31. The contradiction of the Swedes can be found in ____.A) their strictness in social activities and friendliness in entertaining guestsB) their conserved attitude towards social relationships and openness to initiative ideasC) their clearly set social patterns and enthusiasm about big partiesD) their specific ritual and concern about good manners32."Invariably" in the second paragraph can be best replaced with ___.A) "often" B) "usually" C) "sometimes" D) "always"33. This has distorted our understanding of each other, separating us into the known and unknown, whatever our perspectives.Pincker’s point is well taken. He argues that should an extraterrestrial (外星人), for example, land on planet earth she would be struck not by these differences, which would be invisible to her, but by how much alike we all are. She would hear us speak, run human speech through her PDA (Personal Digital Assistance), and learn that all human speeches have nouns, verbs and modifiers. Each one of the 800 or so human languages has ways to express relative location (English uses avast array of prepositions for this purpose; other languages use case markers, or post-positional words, like Japanese). All languages express what is past, what is happening at the moment, and has ways to predict or plan future action. All have words and phrases to express hope and hopelessness, passion and friendship, anger and negotiation and apology. The extraterrestrial would say we all speak dialects of one common language.Pincker has noted that there are emotional and cultural universals that stretch across races, across national borders, with differences only in the slightest sense. All cultures value beauty, and a beautiful baby or woman or man is recognized as such whether African, Asian or European. All cultures cherish families and punish crime, and define crime in fairly similar ways.36.Pincker thinks traditional anthropology has laid too much emphasis on____.A) the differences among human beingsB) the similarities among human racesC) the differences between the human and the extraterrestrialD) the similarities between the human and the extraterrestrial37. According to Pinker, if the extraterrestrial comes to earth, ____.A) she will be impressed by the odd and dark sides of human beingsB) human beings tend to treat her in an odd and hostile wayC) she will first notice the common points in all human beingsD) she will be strongly impressed by the language of English and Japanese38. Which of the following point about human languages is NOT mentioned in the passage?A) They all have ways to express relative locations.B) They all have ways to express time.C) They all have ways to describe family and crime.D) They all have ways to describe feels.39. Pincker will most probably agree that ____.A) if we behave like the extraterrestrial, we can be happier and more contentedB) different peoples have different standards about beautyC) different languages on the earth are dialects of one common languageD) if we notice more of the common parts among human beings, we can live a morepeaceful life40. The author's attitude towards Pincker's theory is ____.A) critical B) ironical C) objective D) negativePassage ThreeMany people try every means to make themselves look younger and more attractive. Some even go under the surgeon’s knife to achieve the state of grace. Surgery that can improve the way a person looks is called cosmetic surgery, which is becoming more and more popular in the world nowadays. Both men and women are turning to this treatment as a way of keeping their appearance young as well as keeping competitive in their jobs. Men especially are beginning to turn to facelifts, liposuction (taking fat out of the body), and implants (putting artificial parts into their bodies ) to help them look younger. As companies downsize and move younger employees into higher positions, older employees in their late forties and early fifties feel the need to look and act younger in order to stay competitive. A younger look through cosmetic surgery may give an older employee a few more years on the job. These operations are not without dangers, however. One young woman had an eye operation to get rid of the dark bags under her eyes. She described her experience as terrible. She said, “When he sta rted cutting, I was fully awake. Even though he’d given me an injection near my eyes, I saw everything.” She went on to explain, “I knew I had to keep still because of what he was doing. He was scraping away fat underneath myeyes. It took about ten minute s. After he finished, I felt I couldn’t walk. I was so faint.” Her troubles did not end after the operation. For two weeks, her eyes were swollen and almost completely closed, and even dark glasses could not hide the side effects of the operation.Liposuction, taking fat out of the body, is probably the most popular cosmetic operation in the United States. It seems simple enough. First, a small cut is made over the place where the patient wants the fat removed. Next, a small pipe is put into the cut. A machine like a vacuum cleaner is then turned on, and the fat is sucked right out of the body. However, as one doctor explained, some problems can happen after the operation. He warned, “Irregular lumps and loose skin can result from this operation. If it is no t evenly done, liposuction can produce a very lumpy result.” Patients often must have more liposuction to correct the problem.41. People spend money on cosmetic surgery because_____.A. it is become more and more popular in the world nowadaysB. it can keep them look youngC. it can help them keep their jobsD. both B to C42. Which of the following statements is NOT true?A. Cosmetic surgery can help people achieve the state of grace.B. Cosmetic surgery is not dangerous.C. Cosmetic surgery is a way to make people look younger by an operation.D. Both women and men try cosmetic surgery to hide their age.43. What can we learn form the third paragraph?A. This was an implant operation.B. The young woman was against cosmetic surgery. the young woman got.C. There were some side effects of the cosmetic surgery the young woman got.D. The young woman got an injection and didn’t know what happened during theoperation.44. What does not mention about Liposuction?A. Fat is taken out of the body.B. A small cut is made over your body.C. 英语重修试题及答案2

英语重修试题及答案2Test TwoReading ComprehensionPassage 1Last Thursday an old chap came to our school to talk about the evils of smoking. He said he wouldn't go on for too long, and we saw him take his wristwatch off and lay it on the table. I can't remember what he said about smoking because Slater and I had other things to think about. He finished when the bell rang for playtime, and the headmaster told us to go out. Slater happened to slip.In the playground Slater showed me the watch. He put it on his wrist, and it looked lovely. I was wishing that I'd been the one to slip by the table, because it was a beautiful watch, gold by the look of it. The headmaster came outside then, and the old boy was with him. They walked about, looking around and talking all the time. After a bit the bell rang, and we got into our lines, ready to go in.The headmaster said, "I've got a little job for you boys. This gentleman, our lecturer, has just lost his watch in the playground. It's happened before, he says --- it just slips off his wrist. So look around for it, will you? See if you're clever enough to find it. I've no doubt the boy who does so will get a useful reward? "Well, of course, Slater wasn't going to miss a chance like that. He's just about the luckiest devil in the school --- rewards just drop into his hands. We all walked about the playground, looking for the watch. And I wasn't a bit surprised when Slater bent down as if he was picking something up. Then he hurried past me towards the old man."Where are you going?" I called out, though I knew very well where he was going. "Where do you think?" he called back. And the next minute there was Slater, all smiles, handing over the watch to the old fellow and hanging about for the reward. But the lecturer didn't seem at all pleased. In fact he looked quite ready to put a knife in Slater's heart --- until the headmaster burst out laughing. Then they both laughed. Slater told me afterwards that the old man hadn't even said "Thank you" for the watch. The thing that puzzled us most of all was that Slater didn't get any reward. When he reminded the headmaster about it, the headmaster said: "Ah yes, we mustn't forget that I said ‘a useful reward’, didn't I?" And then he gave Slater a big sheet of paper and told him to write a composition on the evils of smoking. Slater says he hasn't got a clue what to write.1. What were the boys thinking about during the lecture?A) They were not thinking about anything.B) They were thinking about the evils of smoking.C) About the watch --- how to get it, perhaps.D) They thought that the headmaster was very clever.2. Why did the story-teller wish that he had slipped?A) Because it was a beautiful watch.B) He thought he could have taken the watch if he had slipped.C) If that had happened, the watch wouldn't have been lost.D) In that case he wouldn't have given it back to the lecturer.3. "The headmaster came outside then, and the old boy was with him." Who was the old boy?A) An old student. B) The lecturer. C) The headmaster's son.D) A servant.4. When Slater "bent down", what was he trying to do?A) He had to bend down in order to pick up the watch.B) He was trying to hide the fact that he had found the watch.C) The watch had slipped off his wrist, and he was trying to pick it up.D) He was pretending to have found something.5. Why didn't Slater get the kind of reward he expected?A) The headmaster had forgot it, probably.B) Because the lecturer did not agree to give him any reward.C) Because the headmaster never meant to give the usual kind of reward to anyone.D) Because the headmaster did not keep his word.Passage 2Many poor people made good money by selling their own living, healthy teeth. Young people's teeth were in special demand. Dentists with rich, gap-toothed patients often had several live-tooth sellers at hand ready to have their teeth pulled. The idea was to get the best match and fit for the patient. Miss Smith's second-from-the-middle tooth might be no good. But maybe Mr Brown's third-left would fit her ladyship's socket. Some of the double extractions took place right on the spot. The bad tooth would be hauled out. Then the newly drawn live one would be popped into the socket. Strange though it may seem these transplants sometimes worked. At least they would last for a year or two. But they, like ivory teeth, had to be tied firmly to the real teeth next to them.In some cases, neither carved teeth nor transplants worked -- no matter how rich or famous the patient. Next time you see a picture of George Washington, take a good look at it. There's something strange about the president's mouth. It has a puffedlook, especially under the lower lip. Washington suffered from poor teeth. He lost most of them when he was quite young. Dentist after dentist tried to fit him with suitable dentures. But none of them were really satisfactory. One set had dogs' teeth in the top. In the bottom were human teeth. The set was held together by strong, coiled, steel springs. It weighed nearly a quarter of a pound. That's quite a lot of bone, lead, wax, and iron to carry round in your mouth. Yet Washington never took out his false teeth in public, even to eat. He was too proud. The artist Gilbert Stuart was asked to paint Washington's portrait. But he was troubled at the way the president's lower lip jutted out. He told Washington to stuff wads of cotton between his chin and teeth. The result was the puffed-out look we see today in Washington's portrait on some American bills, coins, and stamps. One set of Washington's ill-fitting false teeth is still shown in the Dental Museum in Baltimore. It is a far cry from the light, strong, well-fitted, plastic and metal dentures of today.6. The best teeth for transplants probably came from ___________.A) living young people B) dead soldiers C) rich patients D) skillful dentists7. George Washington's lower lip jutted because ___________.A) he had suffered from poor teeth B) he had taken out his false teethC) his false teeth didn't fit well D) his jaw was too small8. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the phrase "a far cry" in the last paragraph?A) A shout in the distance. B) A loud yell. C) A similar remark.D) Something different.Passage 3In October 1949 the United Nations brought a number of specialists on food to Geneva, to discuss the problems of eating habits and food supplies of peoples throughout the world. One problem that interested the specialists particularly was a form of illness, about which little was known, among the children in Africa and Latin America. The World Health Organization (WHO) planned to study this disease to determine the relationship between the eating habits of the people and the disease. Two doctors were chosen to make the study. They flew to Africa south of the Sahara and during the next two months visited ten countries. They found that serious diseases of poor eating, often mistaken for other diseases, existed in all parts of Africa. The diseases were similar and could therefore all be named kwashiorkor. The diseased children are usually from one to four years old. As the illness progresses, the child's stomach becomes swollen by liquid collecting in the body. The skin changes color and may break out in open sores. The hair changes color and starts to fall out. The patient loses all interest in his surroundings and even in food, and becomes so weak that he wants to lie down all the time. Stomach liquids are no longer produced. The doctors reasoned that kwashiorkor was found in the young children of this age in many parts of Africa because of lack of milk or meat. Their mothers, after stopping their breast-feeding, gave them foods full of starches instead of greatly needed proteins. They found that the addition of milk to the food of children suffering from kwashiorkor saved many lives. The unbelievable thing about kwashiorkor is that the very existence of the disease --- which has been killing thousands of children for centuries --- was not even recognized in Latin America as recently as ten years ago. The deaths of those children were mistakenly listed as due to other diseases. It was the WHO's work in Africa that led to the discovery of the problem in Central America.11. From the passage we learn that kwashiorkor is a disease caused by ______.A) poor living conditions B) lack of proteins in foodC) breast-feeding D) lack of food12. Where was the study of this disease carried out?A) The Sahara. B) Central America. C) Latin America D) Africa.13. It is difficult to discover kwashiorkor because ______.A) it has no symptoms at all B) it is hard to identify signs of itC) it doesn't last long enough for careful observationD) it is hardly distinguishable from other diseases14. A main symptom of this disease is that children who have it __ ____.A) cannot stop liquid produce in the stomachB) have a big stomachC) can never satisfy their hungerD) are not able to sit or lie down15. But these are never enough. An essential factor is regular physical activity -- exercise for a body that needs itto function well. All of us know that ordinary movements -- things like running, jumping, and bending -- are made by muscles. Muscles also do many other things. They suck air into your lungs, push food along your digestive tract, and tighten your blood vessels to raise blood pressure when you need more pressure for an emergency. Your heart is a muscular pump. When your muscles are not used, or are not used enough, they do not develop and grow properly. They soon become flabby and weak, shrink in size, and lose the ability to do the jobsthey were meant to do.Recent studies showed that the average high school student spends fifteen to thirty hours a week watching television and only two hours a week in organized play or exercise. That is one reason why one-third of the 200,000 pupils tested for the President's Council on Physical Fitness failed a simple test of strength, stamina, and flexibility. Some of the boys and girls could not raise themselves to a sitting position without using their hands!Cars and buses, elevators and escalators, TV and push-button machines all tend to reduce strenuous physical activity. But our bodies still need exercise. Without it they soon become weak, ineffective, and unattractive.18. In the article, muscles are said to do all of the following EXCEPT __________.A) suck air B) tighten blood vesselsC) run, jump, bend D) reflect pains19. The thing to keep physical fitness discussed in this article is _________。

Choose the best answer to each question. Then you should mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage OneFor anybody who ever failed a maths test, something marvellous happened in Stockholm on December 10, 2000. A soft-spoken fellow from Kansas -a guy who was turned down by the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) because his maths scores were too low and who never had much formal physics training -received the Nobel Prize in physics. This is slightly ironical, because Jack St Clair Kilby is not a physicist. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences was willing to overlook that minor detail, though, because Kilby did, after all, come up with the most valuable invention of the past half-century: the microchip. Jack Kilby's idea sparked the information age. The tiny silicon chip at the heart of all digital devices has arguably become the most important industrial commodity since crude oil. Without the chip, there could be no personal computers or mobile phones, no Internet or Play-Stations. The semiconductor integrated circuit has changed the world as fundamentally as did the light bulb, the telephone and the horseless carriage. But somehow the man who made the microchip has never achieved the recognition that Edison, Bell and Ford enjoyed. Thanks to the Nobel Prize, at age 78, Jack Kilby finally received the attention he deserved.31. Kilby is a(n) ____.A) American B) Frenchman C) Swedish D) Englishman32. At this time, U. S. political and demographic (人口的) developments were inspiring major changes in attitudes about, and approaches to, higher education. Before 1959, there was only one nationwide college-entrance testingprogram, which focused on identifying the very best students for admission to the nation's elite universities. The remainder of college students were often admitted on the basis of family ties or entrance exams offered by individual institutions. In the late 1950s, large numbers of students were approaching college age and wanted to attend college. Financial aid to students was increasing, and most colleges wanted to grow. That was the atmosphere in which ACT's founders established theAmerican College Testing Program. As the nation's view of education has evolved to one embracing lifelong learning, ACT's programs have grown and evolved in the same direction, helping people plan for and assess learning throughout their lives from college through graduate school and also in the workplace.36. Their Japanese friends were very shocked, because the Japanese think that the numbers four and nine are unlucky. This i s because the Japanese for “four” is the same as an old Japanese word for “sorrow” and “darkness”.The young couple thought about the problem for a long time. Friday is always unlucky. Adam and Eve left the Garden of Eden on a Friday, Jesus Christ died on a Friday. (There were thirteen people at His Last Supper.) His secretary requested a 10% salary raise.
