Unit 2 Section B Time slows down那一刻,时光驻足1 Time slows down (Title)Meaning beyond words: The author describes “time” as a person who slows down his paces to show a strong desire to hold onto something that has passed or is passing.Note: Like Text A, Text B is also written in the narrative present or the dramatic present. Again, the author uses the present tense throughout to describe events that happened in the past. The purpose is to make the past events sound vivid, as if they were happening right now.1 "Daddy, let's take a walk."2 It's an April day in Virginia. He nods, puts his hands on the arms of his wheelchair, whispers something that makes little sense. I try to help him up, but he is too heavy and limp.3 "Come for a walk, and then — I've brought you a surprise."4 The white curtains surge in the breeze.5 Shivering, he complains it's chilly. "It's cold, I'm tired. Can't we go home now?"1 “爸爸,我们去散散步吧。

American higher education (1/6)
In USA, students can choose to go to college after high school. (Or they can choose to go straight to the workforce after high school.) They have the option of attending a two-year community college before applying to a four-year university. Admission to community college is easier, tuition is lower, and class sizes are often smaller than at a university. Community college students can earn an associate degree and transfer up to two years of course credits to a university.

Read in thought groups
Try to read in phrases of three or four words, especially in complete clauses and prepositional phrases. To develop the habit of reading in phrases, you may use a “/” to mark off phrases and to group them into group thoughts. Read the following sentences by dividing them into phrases, or thought groups.
Read in thought groups
Tips
If your team does its job well, /your manager will speak kindly /about your group.
Reading skill practice
Read in thought groups
When we read, our eyes make small stops along the line of text. Poor readers make many more fixations (eye stops) than good readers. Not only does this slow you down, but it inhibits comprehension because meaning is easier to pull from groups of words rather than from individual words or even single letters.

American higher education (3/6)
Most students in USA take the SAT (known as Scholastic Aptitude Test) or ACT (American College Testing) during their final year of high school. Each university sets a minimum SAT or ACT score that a student must achieve in order to gain admission. These are standardized quantitative examinations. The SAT tests critical reading, mathematics, and writing skills. The ACT tests English, mathematics, reading, and science reasoning, and includes an optimal writing test.
University students pursuing a bachelor’s degree are called “undergraduates”; students pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree are called “graduate students”.

Adolescence is a challenging time for young people, bringing on not only the physical changes of puberty, but emotional transformation as well and in some cases, the emergence of serious mental health conditions. For parents, it can sometimes seem like their affectionate, adoring child has become a different, distant person and that their teen’s friends have become more important to them than their family. But some of these changes are part of the essential process of moving toward independence and parents who are able to offer more empathy than judgment can continue to be a source of guidance for their kids, and emerge from this period with their relationship intact. Admittedly, though, teens do not always make it easy: A heightened egocentrism is a core trait of adolescence.
