"Who knows, one day, it may be of use to you."The lazy boy began to see what he could do. But after a little practice he found that he was becoming very skilled and soon he was making some of the finest tacks.Old Mr. Smith died and the son on account of the war lost all his goods. He had to leave home and was forced to take up residence in another country. It so happened that in this village there were numerous shoemakers who were spending a lot of money to buy tacks for their shoes and even at times when they paid high prices they were not always able to get what they wanted, because in that part of the country there was a high demand for soldiers' shoes. Our young Mr. Smith, who was finding it difficult to earn his daily bread, remembered that once upon a time he had learned the art of making tacks and had the sudden idea of making a bargain with the shoemakers. He told them that he would make the tacks if they would help to get him settled in his workshop. The shoemakers were only too glad of the offer. And after a while, Mr. Smith found that he was soon making the finest tacks in the village."How funny it seems," he used to say, "even making tacks can bring a fortune. I came home expecting to go out for supper with friends and get to bed early, but, my God, was I in for a surprise...As I pulled up in the driveway I noticed a note tied to this great big teddy bear on the steps to my home. I smiled, and slowly started to open the note... it read "H".As I opened the door, there was my dog, waiting with another note, which read "A".I wondered what he was up to as I went up the stairs to the master bedroom. The bed was full of roses and there lay another note, this one read "W."I noticed on the night table a ring box and immediately started to tear it open... as I opened it, there was a little piece of paper with the letter "A" on it. I started to laugh and call out his name, still wondering what he was up to.I pulled myself together and went to the kitchen looking for him or more letters. As I do every day after work, I started tomake myself a cup of tea when I noticed him, waiting, as beautiful as ever, next to the front door, with the most amazing smile, the type of smile that makes you melt, and then I heard, "How was your day my love?"I walked towards him and smiled, and said, "Wonderful honey."He asked "Did you notice what was in the fridge?" I started to laugh and went to see. As I opened the fridge door, I saw the letters "II" on my birthday cake.I turned to him and asked, "Honey, what are you up to?"He replied, "Put all of those together and I'm going to be waiting for you outside." I stood there placing the letters together... H-A-W-A-I-I! By the time I realized what I was reading and got outside, my love was standing there with my suit cases and a beautiful flower neckless ready to go ... to wonderful Hawaii!I had a wonderful time in another one of life's little wonders.. Your Idea of a Good FriendIn kindergarten your idea of a good friend was the person who let you have the red crayon when all that was left was the ugly black one.In first grade your idea of a good friend was the person who went to the bathroom with you and held your hand as you walked through the scary halls. In second grade your idea of a good friend was the person who helped you stand up to the class bully. In third grade your idea of a good friend was the person who shared their lunch with you when you forgot yours on the bus.In fourth grade your idea of a good friend was the person who was willing to switch square dancing partners in gym so youwouldn't have to be stuck do-si-do-ing with Nasty Nick or Smelly Susan. In fifth grade your idea of a friend was the person who saved a seat on the back of the bus for you.In sixth grade your idea of a friend was the person who went up to Nick or Susan, your new crush, and asked them to dance with you, so that if they said no you wouldn't have to be embarrassed. In seventh grade your idea of a friend was the person who let you copy the social studies homework from the night before that you had.In eighth grade your idea of a good friend was the person who helped you pack up your stuffed animals and old baseball but didn't laugh at you when you finished and broke out into tears. In ninth grade your idea of a good friend was the person who would go to a party thrown by a senior so you wouldn't wind up being the only freshman there. In tenth grade your idea of a good friend was the person who changed their schedule so you would have someone to sit with at lunch. In eleventh grade your idea of a good friend was the person who gave you rides in their new car, convinced your parents that you shouldn't be grounded, consoled you when you broke up with Nick or Susan, and found you a date to the prom.In twelfth grade your idea of a good friend was the person who helped you pick out a college/university, assured you that you would get into that college/university, helped you deal with your parents who were having a hard time adjusting to the idea of letting you go...At graduation your idea of a good friend was the person who was crying on the inside but managed the biggest smile one could give as they congratulated you.The summer after twelfth grade your idea of a good friend was the person who helped you clean up the bottles from that party, helped you sneak out of the house when you just couldn't deal with your parents, assured you that now that you and Nick or you and Susan were back together, you could make it through anything, helped you pack up for university and just silently hugged you as you looked through blurry eyes at 18 years of memories you were leaving behind, and finally on those last days of childhood, went out of their way to give you reassurance that you would make it in college as well as you had these past 18 years, and most importantly sent you off to college knowing you were loved. Now, your idea of a good friend is still the person who gives you the better of the two choices, holds your hand when you're scared, helps you fight off those who try to take advantage of you, thinks of you at times when you are not there, reminds you of what you have forgotten, helps you put the past behind you but understands when you need to hold on to it a little longer, stays with you so that you have confidence, goes out of their way to make time for you, helps you clear up your mistakes, helps you deal with pressure from others, smiles for you when they are sad, helps you become a better person, and most importantly loves you!Pass on to those friends of the past, and those of the future...and those you have met along the way...[crying yet? oh there's more]Thank you for being a friend. No matter where we go or whowe become, never forget who helped us get there. There's never a wrong time to pick up a phone or send a message telling your friends how much you miss them or how much you love them. You know who you are, pass it on to someone who you want to remind. So send this to all your friends and maybe those who aren't but just watch and see who sends it back.If you love someone, tell them. Remember always to say what you mean.Never be afraid to express yourself. Take this opportunity to tell someone what they mean to you. Seize the day and have no regrets. Most importantly, stay close to your friends and family, for they have helped make you the person that you are today and are what it's all about anyway. Pass this along to your friends.Let it make a difference in your day and theirs. The difference between expressing love and having regrets is that the regrets may stay around forever. Kate's Friend, JosephKate CaldwellIn the middle of 5th grade I met Joseph. He transferred to Powell Elementary in the middle of the year. Joseph had only lived in The United States for one year. Some of the other kids made fun of him because of his accent. He also didn't know English very well, he had spoken Swahili all of his life. This caused him to stumble over words, sometimes not knowing how to say what he wanted to say. I became his friend and helped him find the word he wanted to use. We would carry on conversations, which would involve speaking very slowly and a lot of explaining. By the end of the year his English had improved 110%.Joseph was on the school track team with me. Even when his English got pretty good, he still didn't understand jokes. Joseph got a kick out of to tell knock-knock jokes that sometimes got very annoying.

We all have subjects and idiosyncrasies that push our buttons, and I can almost guarantee that the difficult person in your life knows what those are—but do you? Spend some time exploring what really ticks you off. Is it when somebody talks about politics, money, or your family? Is it when your ex takes your kids to McDonald’s 3 days in a row?

Once you have your list of those trigger buttons, you are ready to arm yourself. Create a plan. What will you do when the conversation steers dangerously close to one of your buttons?
