ARecent studies have shown that self-esteem plays a crucial role in a person’s overall happiness and success. Self-esteem is your opinion of yourself. It is how you view your worth as a person and whether you believe you are capable and valuable.Research has shown that people with healthy self-esteem have an easier time handling stress, accepting feedback and criticism, and bouncing back from failures. They also tend to have better relationships and higher levels of happiness. On the other hand, people with low self-esteem tend to struggle with confidence and are more likely to experience anxiety and depression. They may have difficulty speaking up for themselves and pursuing their goals, and they may be more likely to fall into unhealthy relationships. So how can you improve your self-esteem? One important step is to focus on your strengths and accomplishments. Write down your achievements, no matter how small they may seem, and remind yourself of them whenever you are feeling low.It is also important to challenge negative thought patterns. When you notice yourself thinking negative thoughts about yourself, try to reframe them into something more positive. For example, if you catch yourself thinking, “I will never be good enough,”try changing it to, “I am capable and I have what it takes to succeed.”Finally, don’t be afraid to seek support from friends, family, or a mental health professional. Building self-esteem takes time and effort, but it is an essential component of overall well-being.1. What is self-esteem according to the passage?A. How others view you.B. Surround yourself with negative people.C. Write down your achievements and challenge negative thoughts.D. Fortunately, there are organizations working to change this. One organization is the nonprofit group One Laptop per Child (OLPC). They're also designed to hold a charge for long periods of time and to be used in areas with limited power sources.Another organization working to bridge the digital divide is Digital Promise, an independent nonprofit that aims to improve education through technology. Digital Promise works with educators and researchers to promote the use of technology in schools and to find effective ways to integrate it into learning. Among its many projects, Digital Promise has launched a program called Verizon Innovative Learning, which provides free technology, internet access, and training to under-resourced middle schools across the United States.12. Travelers who headed to foreign countries took dictionaries or phrasebooks with them. But now people can access instant translation services almost anywhere they go.Online translations are free, and when you use translation apps like Google Translate oriTranslate, sometimes you don't even have to look things up! Just point your phone's camera at some text, and a translation instantly appears. If you want to translate something being said aloud, just turn on your phone's microphone. Some apps even have a conversation mode where you take turns speaking with someone in a different language.Translation apps make foreign travel much easier than before. They are valuable when it comes to communicating with taxi drivers or hotel staff who don't speak your language. But these apps are far from perfect. Sometimes a translation makes no sense, and you can only guess what it mainly means. Other times, you might not know that the translation has failed until you try it on a native speaker.Although these apps are not perfect, you'll still feel surprised when considering what's happening underneath the app's surface. ________Translators use machine learning to compare millions of examples of human translated texts. That information helps the program reproduce more natural sounding translations based on real﹣world examples. People can flag incorrect or unhelpful translations and suggest better ones. This input is then used to make future translations better. With programs like Google Translate, it can be hard to get good translations for single words because most words have multiple meanings. It's better to try short sentences that provide context instead. But make the sentence straightforward. Anything too complicated or idiomatic will likely produce unusual results. As people continue to use translation services, translations will improve. One day you might not have to worry about a poor translation causing an embarrassing misunderstanding. But used wisely, they are still excellent aids for exploring and understanding the world around you.(1)How do the translation apps make foreign travel easier than before?________(2)Please explain the underlined sentence in your own words.________(3)Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explainwhy.Mobile translators use machine to process words, so the author worries about the efficient application of the translators in the future.________(4)Please briefly write out what benefits mobile translators bring to you. It estimates that about 450 million people are dealing with mental or neurological disorders (神经系统疾病), which means that one in four people will struggle with mental illness at some point in their lives. To combat this trend, scientists are looking for solutions and trying to understand better how the brain works. One promising field is called optogenetics (光遗传学). Optogenetics involves using light to turn on or off different types of neurons (神经元) in the brain. Researchers use light-sensitive proteins from algae (海藻) and other organisms to manipulate (操纵) neurons that have been genetically modified to respond to light. By turning certain neurons on or off, scientists can learn more about how the brain processes different stimuli (刺激) and how it controls behavior. So far, researchers have tested optogenetics mostly in animals. They use tiny fiber-optic cables to shine light into the brains of rodents (啮齿动物) tostimulate targeted neurons. Depending on the aims of their experiments, the scientists use different colors of light to activate or deactivate different types of neurons.Despite progress in the field, there are still some concerns about using optogenetics in humans. Some scientists worry about the long-term effects of manipulating brain activity in this way. They also worry about the accuracy of targeting specific neurons.12. Researchers reported last week on their examination of 369 stars. They compared each one to the sun in terms of surface temperature, size and rotation. They found that on average, the other stars had five times more brightness variability than our sun.The lead author was Timo Reinhold, an astronomer with the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research in Germany. He told the Reuters news agency that the variability in brightness results from dark spots on the surface of the star moving in and out of view."A direct measure of solar activity is the number of sunspots on the surface," Reinhold said. "Findingsuch stars with very similar parameters as our sun but being five times more variable was surprising."The sun—made up mainly of hydrogen and helium—is an average-sized star that formed more than 4.5 billion years ago. It stretches about 1.4 million kilometers across and has a surface temperature of 5,500 degrees Celsius. The researchers compared scientific data on the similar stars to historical records of the sun's activity. The records included about 400 years of observational data on sunspots. The researchers also studied about 9,000 years of data based on chemical element variants in tree rings and ice buildup tied to solar activity. These records show the sun has not been much more active than it is now.The researchers said increased magnetic activity related to sunspots can lead to electromagnetic events that affect Earth. For example, large releases of plasma—a collection of charged particles—from outer areas of the sun's atmosphere could cause problems for satellites and other communications equipment. The discovery may be good news for life on Earth. A much more active sun might have had more major effects on Earth's geology and ancient climate. "A 'too active' star would definitively change the conditions for life on the planet, so living with a quite boring star is not the worst option," Reinhold said. The findings, he noted, do not rule out the possibility that the sun may be in a quiet period and could become more variable in the future. However, the researchers say there are no signs that solar activity will be increasing any time soon.(1)According to Timo Reinhold, what causes the variability in brightness of the sun?A.Hydrogen and helium in the sun.B.The surface temperature of the sun.C.The diameter(直径)of the sun.D.Dark spots on its outer part.(2)Which of the following helped researchers prove the sun's inactivity?A.Scientific data of all the other stars.B.Data of sunspots observed in the past 400 years.C.9,000 years of data of the activities of the sun.D.Data of chemical element variants in icy trees.(3)What will probably happen if the sun becomes very active?A.There will be a decreased magnetic activity.B.The geology and climate of the Earth will be different.C.Satellites and other communications equipment will work better.D.People on the Earth have to live with the quite boring star.(4)What is the best title of this article?A.The sun: less active than similar starsB.The sun: less bright and intense than beforeC.Sun spots: a direct measure of solar activityD.Sun spots: the cause of electromagnetic events on Earth30. AI first learned about Robert Munsch when I was in primary school. Our librarian read us The Paper Bag Princess, which I loved. I loved the way Munsch told a story and how the illustrations by Michael Martchenko complemented it perfectly.Since then, I’ve read several other books by Munsch, including Love You Forever, The Fire Station and The Snowsuit, and I have enjoyed them all.The Paper Bag Princess is a classic story about a princess who saves a prince from a dragon, only to have the prince reject her because she is no longer pretty due to her ragged clothes. It tells the story of a young boy who visits his local fire station and learns all about the equipment firefighters use to fight fires. The Snowsuit is a hilarious story about a little boy who stubbornly refuses to wear his new snowsuit, despite the cold weather. There are people who play chess for a living, and they travel all over the world participating in tournaments. These players are called professional chess players, and they have an international rating system that levels the playing field. It iscalled the Elo rating system. The Elo rating system was named after its creator, Hungarian physicist Arpad Elo, who calculated the formula in 1960. His system was based on the assumption that chess is like a physical game; a player’s performance is dependent on their level of skill and their physical condition. The rating system also takes into account the strength of the opponent and the result of the game. The Elo system assigns everyone who plays chess a rating based on their performance in tournaments. The system is set up so that players who have higher ratings are more likely to win against players with lower ratings. A player’s rating can go up or down depending on how well they play against their opponent.A professional chess player can have a rating of over 2700, while an average player has a rating of around 1500. The difference between ratings can affect how much prize money is awarded to the winning player. For instance, the winner of a tournament may get $50,000 while second place may only get $30,000.To become a professional chess player, you need to have talent, skill, and patience. It takes years of practice and training to compete at the highest levels. Most chess players start as children and study the game intensely. They join chess clubs and participate in tournaments. It is not uncommon for a player to spend six to eight hours a day studying chess.8. According to the passage, what is the Elo rating system?A. An international rating system for chess playersB. A system for calculating prize money in chess tournamentsC. A way to level the playing field for physical gamesD. A method of ranking players based on their physical condition9. What is the significance of the opponent’s strength in the Elo rating system?A. It affects the Elo rating of the opposing player onlyB. It determines the prize money awarded to the winnersC. It helps to objectively determine a player’s Elo ratingD. It is considered to be of little importance10. What does the article suggest about the training required to become aprofessional chess player?A. It requires a lot of time and hard workB. It is more important than talentC. It is not commonly taken seriously enoughD. It is typically begun in adulthood11. What is the main purpose of the article?A. To explain the history of chessB. To argue for the inclusion of chess in the OlympicsC. To highlight the physical demands of playing chessD. To provide information about professional chess players and the Elo rating systemDExercising with others may help a person’s mindset, researchers report, by providing a social experience and a source of support that makes the activity more enjoyable. In a review of studies published from 2005 to 2015, researchers from the University of Copenhagen analyzed evidence comparing groups who exercised alone with those who worked out together, either in person or virtually. The meta-analysis, which included data on nearly 2,000 participants, found that those who exercised in a group setting, either in person or remotely, reported greater “adherence” (持续性) to their workout routine than those who exercised alone. The findings also suggest that working out as a group appeared to reduce the participants’ perceived exertion, meaning they felt they were getting more of a workout while feeling less physical strain. The results, published Thursday in the journal Obesity, add to the body of evidence that suggests that being part of a group, whether in person or virtually, can lend important support to achieving and maintaining personal fitness goals. One of the main advantages of working out in a group is the opportunity to share one’s successes and feelings with others, according to the report’s senior author, Marit B. Rise, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Copenhagen’s Center for Social Data Science. The coaches and the social environment provided by exercisingwith others can also motivate individuals to exercise more often, she said. But if someone is having difficulty sticking to an exercise regime, it may be difficult to find a group to join, Dr. Rise cautioned. In those cases, people who work out alone should consider ways to mimic the support mechanisms found in a group setting, such as joining an online support program on a social media platform dedicated to fitness. The researchers did not gather information on factors such as how frequently a group worked out together or how long they stayed in contact with one another outside of exercise sessions.12. What do researchers from the University of Copenhagen think of group exercise?A. It is an effective way to lose weight.B. It is more enjoyable than exercising alone.C. It is better for physical exercise than for mental health.D. It is more physically challenging than exercising alone.13. What did the researchers’ meta-analysis find out?A. Those who exercised in groups felt more physical strain.B. Those who exercised in groups exercised harder than those who exercised alone.C. Experiences of participants who exercised in groups were significantly different from those who exercised alone.D. People who exercised in groups were more likely to keep to their workout routine.14. What is one of the advantages of exercising in a group?A. It enables people to boast about their fitness achievements.B. It provides an opportunity to have a healthy competition with other people.C. It allows people to share their successes and feelings with others.D. It forces people to exercise even when they do not feel like it.15. What should people do if they cannot find a group to join?A. lot ——the sandless sandbag.Today he was named the winner of the Young Scientist Challenge for his sandbag.“I had a really terrifying experience with a hurricane,”said Peyton.“When I was 4,I experienced Hurricane Wilma. When it hit Florida in October 2005,my family and I crowded in a closet and watched the storm bring damage and death to our area, feeling terrible and hopeless.”Saltwater flooding caused great damage, which made him think about how people can prepare for floods.Peyton, who has been solving math problems since he was 3,eventually came up with the sandless sandbag.“Instead of filling it with sand,I filled it with just the right amount of chemicals and salt,”he said.“What’s amazing is that when you pick these bags up and they’re not wet, they only weigh a pound or two.”Unlike regular sandbags,Peyton’s is light and easy to carry. They only expand when doused (浸泡)with water. The bags are portable when dry and will not float away when wet.Experts praised his invention and said that the sandless sandbag could someday save a lot of lives and possessions.“He understands the big picture. He thinks in terms of the influence on society and safety for the people around this area,”said Dr.Antonio, the engineering chairman at the University of Miami.“We’d love to have him at our university.”Peyton has to get through middle school and high school first, but until They show a strong interest in the bones of their own kind. They are often seen gently touching the bones with their trunks and feet while remaining very quiet.Sometimes elephants completely unrelated to the dead will still visit their graves.Elephant researcher Meredith recalls something in his book about a typical elephant death ritual. The entire family of a dead elephant, including her young baby, were all gently touching her body with their trunks, trying to lift her. The elephant herd were all rumbling(低吼):The baby elephant was even observed to be weeping and made sounds that sounded like a scream, but then the entire herd fell incredibly silent. Then they began to throw leaves and dirt over the body and broke off tree branches to cover her. They spent the next two days quietly standing over her body. They sometimes had to leave to get water or food, but they would always return.Events of elephants behaving this way around human beings are common throughout Africa. On many occasions, they have buried dead or sleeping humans or helped them when they are hurt. An old woman fell asleep under a tree. When she woke up,there was an elephant standing over her, gently touching her.She kept very still because she was frightened. As other elephants arrived, they began to scream loudly and buried her under branches. She was found the next morning by the local people, unharmed.George Adamson also recalls when he shot all elephant from a herd that kept breaking into the farmers’gardens.George gave the:elephant’s meat to 1ocal men and then dragged the rest of the body miles away. That night, the other elephants found the body, took the leg bones, returned them to the exact spot the elephant was killed, and made the death ritual.56.Elephants touch the bones of their own kind to ______________.A.express sorrow at the death B.search for the hunterC.clean their trunks and feet D.call for other elephants57.What can we learn about the ritual from Meredith’s book?A.All the elephants were observed to be weeping.B.All the elephants felt sad in the ritual.C.The whole herd screamed for two days.D.The elephants ate nothing for two days.58.The elephant watched the woman because ______________.A.it thought she was sleeping B.it thought she was deadC.it tried to protect her D.it wanted to wake her up59.The case mentioned in the last paragraph mainly shows that ______________.A.it’s cruel of humans to kill elephants for meatB.elephants can find out who hunted their membersC.elephants tend to make the death ritual for their membersD.there are often conflicts between elephants and humans60.What is the best title for the passage?A.Humans and elephantsB.The intelligenee of elephantsC.The feelings of elephantsD.The death rituals of elephantsEA four-wheeled robot, known as Rover, has been tested by a team at Sydney University. It was used to move a herd of cows from a field to a dairy(牛奶场).Researchers were amazed at how easily cows accepted the presence of the robot. They were not disturbed by it and the gathering process was calm and effective.Because the robot moved in a steady manner it allowed cows to move at their own speed, which was important in reducing injuries among cattle, said Dr Kendra Kerrisk, dairy researcher and associate professor. The robot was adapted from one that was already being used to monitor fruit and trees on farms.A team at Sydney University’s Centre for Field Robotics improved the robot so that it could be put in a field with cows in order for the researchers to gather data on robot—cow interaction. The robot ne eds to be operated by a human but it’s hoped that in the future a version can be developed that will be fully automated. As well as gathering cows a new version could also collect information useful for farmers.Using robots to get cows to the dairy will be better for their well-being.“The research is in its very early stages but robotic technologies certainly have the potential to transform dairy farming,”said Dr.Kerrisk.“When we have discussed this concept with farmers they have been extremely excited and we have had a series of calls and emails asking how they can get hold of one,”she added. The robot could also cut down the number of accidents involving humans on farms. Most dairy farmers in Australia use bikes to round up their cattle and they are one of the leading causes of injury. The team hopes that by using the robot to do the job instead, accident rates could fall.61.The robot Rover was mainly used to _____________.A.milk the cows on the field B.feed the cows with foodC.round up cows on dairy farms D.take farmers around the farm62.Why did the cows, accept the robot easily?A.Because it moved at a steady pace.B.Because it didn’t hurt the cattle.C.Because it was calm and kind.D.Because it allowed cows to walk at a fast speed.63.At present, the robot Rover ______________.A.can go around the farm automaticallyB.can help researchers to gather dataC.has to be operated by a humanD.has been available in the market64.What can we learn from Dr.Kerrisk’s words in the fifth paragraph?A.The research will soon be finished.B.The robot will be popular among farmers.C.Robotic technology has highly developed.D.Dairy farming has much potential.65.What’s the main idea of the text?A.A team at Sydney University developed a robot.B.Using robots on farms can reduce injuries.C.Dairy farming in Australia needs transforming.D.Robot used to round up cows is a hit with farmers.第Ⅱ卷第三部分写作(共两节,满分45分)第一节阅读表达(每小题3分,满分15分)阅读下面短文,并根据短文后的要求答题(请注意问题后的字数要求)。

"Finding such stars with very similar parameters as our sun but being five times more variable was surprising."The sun—made up mainly of hydrogen and helium—is an average-sized star that formed more than 4.5 billion years ago. However, the researchers say there are no signs that solar activity will be increasing any time soon.(1)According to Timo Reinhold, what causes the variability in brightness of the sun?A.Hydrogen and helium in the sun.B.The surface temperature of the sun.C.The diameter(直径)of the sun.D.Dark spots on its outer part.(2)Which of the following helped researchers prove the sun's inactivity?A.Scientific data of all the other stars.B.Data of sunspots observed in the past 400 years.C.9,000 years of data of the activities of the sun.D.Data of chemical element variants in icy trees.(3)What will probably happen if the sun becomes very active?A.There will be a decreased magnetic activity.B.The geology and climate of the Earth will be different.C.Satellites and other communications equipment will work better.D.People on the Earth have to live with the quite boring star.(4)What is the best title of this article?A.The sun: less active than similar starsB.The sun: less bright and intense than beforeC.Sun spots: a direct measure of solar activityD.Sun spots: the cause of electromagnetic events on Earth13.(12分)Stories are shared in many ways. They are described in books and magazines. They are read around the campfire at night. They are randomly distributed from stand-alone booths. But what else?To revive(复兴)literature in the era of fast news and smartphone addiction, Short Edition, a French publisher of short form literature, has set up more than 30 story dispensers(分发机)in the USA in the past years to deliver fiction at the push of a button at restaurants, universities and government offices.Francis Ford Coppola, the film director and winemaker, liked the idea so much that he invested in the company and placed a dispenser at his Café Zoetrope in San Francisco. Last month public libraries in some other cities announced they would be setting them up, too. There is one on the campus at Penn State. A few can be found in downtown West Palm Beach, Fla. And Short Edition plans to announce more, including at the Los Angeles International Airport."Everything old is new again," said Andrew Nurkin, the director of the Free Library of Philadelphia, which is one of the libraries that set up the dispensers. "We want people to be easily exposed to literature. We want to advance literacy among children and inspire their creativity."Here's how a dispenser works: It has three buttons on top indicating choices for stories that can be read in one minute, three minutes or five minutes. When a button is pushed, a short story is printed. The stories are free. They are chosen from a computer category of more than 100,000 original submissions by writers whose works have been evaluated by Short Edition's judges, and transmitted over a mobile network. For thousands of years, local fishermen have been diving in the shallow waters on this side of Anegada in search of these, slow-moving snails. Many of them have been throwing their large shells in the same spot. The shell mountain is a result of their perseverance(坚持).Conches are harvested both for their meat, which is a staple(主食)of Caribbean cuisine, and for their nice-looking shells, which are sold as jewelry. This makes us understand why local sellers don't just use the shells of Conch Island but also buy them from fishermen. Apparently, while these millions of conch shells make a wonderful sight from a distance, they aren't that pretty up close."These shells aren't as pretty as you probably think they are," Reddit user Viking Mart explained on the popular social network. "Most of of them are damaged. This is because in order to get the conch meat out, fishermen usually make a hole by the 'nose' of the shell. This is to reach and loosen the snail muscle and then pull it out. This leaves these conch shells damaged and one would probably have a hard time selling them."Modern day conch fishermen have been contributing heavily to the rise of Conch Island over the past 200 years, but while that has made it that much more attractive of a tourist attraction, it has also put the snails on the endangered species list.(1)What leads to the formation of Conch Island?A.The continuous birth of conches.B.The development of tourism.C.Increasing demand for conch meat.D.Shells thrown by farmers for a long time.(2)Why do sellers buy conches besides picking up them on the Conch Island?A.They need to sell conch meat.B.They want to help the poor fishermen.C.Those which are bought are of higher quality.D.Those on the Conch Island are damaged.(3)What can we learn from Viking Mart's words?A.Most people think shells are beautiful.B.The shells are not so good as people expect.C.Viking Mart is fond of surfing the Internet.D.Farmers always damage the shells on purpose.(4)What is the present situation of the conches?A.They sell well on the market.B.They live happily on Conch Island.C.They are becoming the endangered species.D.They are made into different shapes to sell.16.(5分) DVaccines(疫苗)against COVID-19 are about 90 percent effective at blocking coronavirus infections, studies suggest.Nearly 4,000 health care workers, first responders and firefighters in six states took part in the study led by CDC researchers. From December 14 through March 13, the workers submitted weekly nasal swabs(鼻拭子)for coronavirus testing. Infection rates fell after vaccination. "Our study shows that if you were fully vaccinated, you had 90 percent protection from infection", says Jeff Burgess.Other studies carried out in California and Texas also seem to back up the findings, researchers say in separate reports published March 23 in the New Engiand Journal of Medicine. In the Texas report, 234 of 8,969 non-vaccinated employees at the University of Texas Southwester Medical Center in Dallas tested positive for the coronavirus from December 15 to January 28. That's 2.61 percent, compared with 1.82 percent(112 of 6,144)of employees that had gotten one shot and 0.05 percent(four of 8,121)of fully vaccinated employees. In the California report, infections among health care workers also fell with increasing vaccination levels. Only seven infections occurred among 4,167 people who were at least 15 days out from getting their second dose of vaccine. The vaccines prevented health care workers in the study from becoming serious ill, says study coauthor Francesca Torriani, a professor at the University of California, San Diego. But to really stop transmission of the virus, it's important to vaccinate 18- to 30-year-olds, she says, "Those are the ones who are right now transmitting the disease. " Motivating these health people who are less likely to become severely ill in the first place to take the shots could be difficult, Torriani says, "There's not much in it for them, but there is a lot in it for their families, so I'm hoping that realization will push them towardgetting vaccinated. "Because some vaccinated people can still get infected, the CDC recommends that people who have gotten their shots continue to wear masks in public to avoid spreading the virus.32. Which of the following is true of the study led by CDC researchers?A.A. All participants in the study were medical workers.B.B. The study was carried out in California and Texas.C.C. Nasal swabs were submitted for testing every day.D.D. A small number of vaccinated people got infected.33. How does the writer support the findings in the third paragraph?A.A. By asking questions.B.B. By quoting the saying.C.C. By listing the statistics.D. D. By describing a process.34. What does the California report suggest?A.A. People are advised to take two doses of vaccines.B.B. One dose of the vaccines can ensure your safety.C.C. The vaccines have some slightest side effects.D.D. Old people should be cautious to get vaccinated.35. According to Torriani, who arc the vital people to block coronavirus transmission?A.A. Healthy people.B.B. Young peopleC.C. Elderly people.D.D. Note that there are tvvo more sentences than you need. Most people don't need science to appreciate the importance of a mother's love. But to understand how early maltreatment can derail a child's development requires careful study. In a famous research, Harry Harlow had demonstrated that proper psychological and physical development of infants requires nurturing and attention from a parent.(1)______ In that research, socially isolated monkey babies that were removed from their mothers were found to be clinging to a cloth—covered surrogate mother for comfort.Such experimentations sound cruel. They, however, have been critical in helping change policies in human orphanages(孤儿院)in the U. S. For centuries sonic orphanages treated infants equally inhumanely. Despite early evidence that orphanage infants were far more likely to die than others, supporters argued that it didn't matter whether children had "parents" specially devoted to them at the orphanage.(2)______ Orphans were supposed to be in positive mental and physical health until adoptive parents were found. Babies, they said, couldn't remember anyway. The harrowing consequences of these theories were most vividly brought to light in Romania in the 1980s and 90s. A ban on abortion(流产)led to a surge in orphanage babies. Simply being fed and changed without individualized affection, some babies present serious problems. Many developed violent behaviors, repetitively rocking or banging their heads. Some were cold and withdrawn or indiscriminately affectionate.(3)______ Their head sizes were especially small. They even had problems with attention and comprehension. The longer these children were left alone, the more damage was seen. The lack of a secure attachment relationship in the early years has destructive consequences for both physical and mental health later in life, with long-lasting effects. The persistence of these effects emphasizes the need to intervene early in life. The Nobel-prize-winning economist James Heckman, has long argued that investing in early childhood education provides a greater returns for society than virtually any other type of spending. It is obviously reflected in increased educational success and productivity. The reduced crime, addiction, distress and disorder point to the same theory. Early life conditions critically affect adult life.(4)________Remove it and the harm is great.A. The appropriate feeding and caring styles were greatly rewarded in all aspects.B. It was claimed that simply feeding and changing them would be adequate.C. Some, however, demonstrate little influence with roughly ordinary behavior pattern.F. And they simply didn't grow like normal infants.25. On my first job as sports editor for the Montpelier Leader Enterprise(MLE),I didn't get a lot of fan mail,so my attention was caught by a letter on my desk one morning. When I opened it,I read:"Sweet piece of writing on the Tigers.Keep up the good work."It was signed by Don Wolfe, the sports editor. Because I was a teenager(being paid the grand total of 15 cents a column inch),his words could not have been more inspiring,I kept the letter in my desk drawer until it got old.Whenever I doubted I had the right stuff to a writer,I would reread Don's note and ________ again.Later, when I got to know him,I learned that Don made a habit of writing a quick, encouraging note to people in all walks of life,"When I make others feel good about themselves,"he told me,"I feel good, too."Over the years,I've tried to copy Don and write uplifting words. In a world too often cold and unresponsive, such notes bring warmth. Why are positive note writers in such short supply My guess is that many who shy away from the practice are too self﹣conscious. They are afraid they will be misunderstood. Thus it may cause troubles and problems. And it sounds insincere on the phone,Also, writing takes time;it is far easier to pick up the phone. The drawback of phone calls,of course,is that they do not last.A note attaches more importance to our well﹣wishing. It is a matter of record, and our words can be read more than once savored (回味) and treasured, and they bring strength and love to us.Today I sent a warm letter to my old boss.I don't know if it will make his day,but it made mine.As my friend Don Wolfe said."Making others feel good about themselves makes me feel good too."(1)What does the underlined part "walk on air" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?(No more than 5 words)________(2)According to the author, why aren't people willing to write letters?(No more than 15 words)________(3)Why did the author write to his old boss?(No more than 15 words)________(4)What's the text mainly about?(No more than 10 words)________(5)Were you encouraged by anybody? And how?(No more than 25 words)________四、完形填空(本题共计 1 小题,共计5分)26.(5分)First FailureI leaned my head on my hand. Some take over-the-counter(非处方的)medicines such as aspirin while others try popular home remedies(治疗)like herbal tea or chicken soup. Yet here is the tough truth about the common cold: nothing really cures it.So why do people sometimes believe that their remedies work? According to James Taylor, professor at the University of Washington, colds usually go away on their own in about a week, improving a little each day after symptoms peak, so it's easy to believe it's medicine rather than time that deserves the credit, USA Today reported. It still seems hard to believe that we can deal with more serious diseases yet are powerless against something so common as a cold. Recently, scientists came closer to figuring out why. To understand it, you first need to know how antiviral(抗病毒的)drugs work. They attack the virus by attaching to and changing the surface structures of the virus. To do that, the drug must fit and lock into the virus like the right piece of a jigsaw(拼图), which means scientists have to identify the virus and build a 3-D model to study its surface before they can design an antiviral drug that is effective enough. The two cold viruses that scientists had long known about were rhinovirus(鼻病毒)A and B. But they didn't find out about the existence of a third virus, rhinovirus C, until 2006. All three of them contribute to the common cold, but drugs that work well against rhinovirus A and B have little effect when used against C."This explains most of the previous failures of drug trials against rhinovirus," study leader Professor Ann Palmenberg at University of Wisconsin-Madison, US, told Science Daliy. Now, more than 10 years after the discovery of rhinovirus C, scientists have finally built a highly-detailed 3-D model of the virus , showing that the surface of the virus is, as expected, different from that of other cold viruses. With the model in hand, hopefully a real cure for a common cold is on its way. Soon, we may no longer have to waste our money on medicines that don't really work.(1)What does the author think of popular remedies for a common cold?A.They are quite effective.B.They are slightly helpful.C.They actually have no effect.D.They still need to be improved.(2)How do antiviral drugs work?A.By breaking up cold viruses directly.B.By changing the surface structures of the cold viruses.C.By preventing colds from developing into serious diseases.D.By absorbing different kinds of cold viruses at the same time.(3)What can we infer from the passage?A.The surface of cold viruses looks quite similar.B.Scientists have already found a cure for the common cold.C.Scientists were not aware of the existence of rhinovirus C until recently.D.Knowing the structure of cold viruses is the key to developing an effective cure.(4)What is the best title for this passage?A.Drugs against cold virusesB.Helpful home remediesC.No current cure for common coldD.Research on cold viruses28.Who was the most important person of the year?

AThe world’s oceans are absorbing about 90% of the excess heat created by greenhouse gas emissions caused by human activity. But the release of ocean energy as a result of this is also one of the primary mechanisms by which the Earth been able to delay much of the warming that we might have experienced to date.To try and gain a better understanding of the processes occurring in the Southern Ocean, a team of researchers has developed a self-contained system that can be dropped from an airplane or drone to measure ocean temperature, salinity and pressure. The Autonomous Ocean Sampling Networks (AOSN) system can travel to depths of 2,000 meters and transmit data back to researchers on land in real time via satellite. The AOSN system has already been used to take readings in the Southern Ocean, where researchers found that heat is being transported across the ocean at a rate four times higher than hasbeen previously estimated. The research suggests that large-scale circulation in the Southern Ocean is becoming more energetic as a result of greenhouse gas emissions, which is helpingto slow global warming, but also resulting in a loss of ice in Antarctica and more sea level rise. One of the benefits of the AOSN system is that it can be used to complement other ocean monitoring tools, such as sophisticated sensors placed on buoys or recon missions by researchships.1. What is the primary way in which greenhouse gases affect the Earth’s oceans?A. They make the oceans absorb more sunlight.B. They increase the acidity of the oceans.C. They cause the oceans to warm up.D. They make the ocean currents more energetic.2. Why is the Southern Ocean particularly important for understanding the effects of greenhouse gas emissions?A. It is where most of the ocean’s heat is absorbed.B. It is a region with particularly high levels of greenhouse gas emissions.C. It is where the effects of climate change are most visible.D. it is where the ocean currents are strongest.3. What is the Autonomous Ocean Sampling Networks (AOSN) system?A. A device that measures ocean temperature, salinity and pressure in real time.B. A system that uses drones to monitor the Southern Ocean from the air.C. A network of research ships that collect data on ocean currents.D. A system that monitors ocean currents using satellite data.BEvery time Ben goes swimming, he carries a knife in his swimsuit. It’s not that he’s afraid of sharks or anything. He just wants to be prepared in case he gets tangled up in some seaweed. This past weekend, Ben went to the beach with some friends. They were taking turns jumping off a small cliff into the ocean. Ben climbed up to the top, took a deep breath, and jumped off. As soon as he hit the water, he felt something wrap around his leg. At first, he thought it was just seaweed. But the grip was too tight.Ben’s mind raced. What could it be? A jellyfish? An octopus? No. It was something much larger. He looked down and saw a giant tentacle wrapped tightly around his leg. He could feel it pulling him deeper under the water.Frantically, Ben reached for his knife. But his swimsuit pocket was empty. He must have dropped it somewhere on the way up to the cliff. Panic set in. He was running out of air. He fought hard to free himself, but the grip only tightened.Just when he thought he’d be lost forever, his friends came to the rescue. Theyrealized there was something wrong as soon as he jumped off the cliff. They understood immediately when they saw him struggling to stay afloat that he was in danger. Together, they managed to pull him free from the creature’s grip and swim to shore.Ben never saw what had attacked him, but he knew it was big. He learned a valuable lesson that day. He now carries two knives every time he goes swimming.4. Why does Ben carry a knife when he goes swimming?A. He wants to defend himself against sharks.B. He wants to be prepared in case he gets tangled up in seaweed.C. He likes the way it looks in his swimsuit pocket.D. He wants to cut things like seaweed and jellyfish.5. What happened to Ben when he jumped into the ocean from the cliff?A. He got stuck in some seaweed.B. He saw a jellyfish swimming below him.C. Something wrapped around his leg and pulled him under.D. He swam to shore by himself.6. Why did Ben panic when he couldn’t find his knife?A. He thought he might run out of breath.B. He was afraid of the creature he was tangled up with.C. He was afraid of drowning.D. Both A and B.7. How did Ben finally get out of danger?A. He fought the creature off by himself.B. He swam to shore by himself.C. His friends came to his rescue.D. He used his two knives to cut himself free.CA recent study has found that artificial intelligence (AI) can accurately predict whether someone is gay or straight just by analyzing their facial features. The studywas conducted by researchers at Stanford University, who used a sample of over 35,000 facial images, taken from an online dating website, and analyzed them using deep neural networks to determine whether the person was gay or straight. The AI was able to accurately distinguish between gay and straight men 81% of the time, and gay and straight women 74% of the time, based purely on facial features. The study also found that gay men and women tend to have “gender-atypical facial morphology, expression, and grooming styles,” which means that their faces tend to be more feminine (in the case of gay men) or more masculine (in the case of gay women) than heterosexual individuals. The findings of the study have caused controversy, with some arguing that it reinforces harmful stereotypes and could lead to discrimination against gay people. Others have raised concerns about the ethics of using AI to detect and potentially “out” people’s sexual orientation without their consent. However, the researchers argue that their study has important implications for understanding the biological basis of sexual orientation, which has long been a topic of debate. They point out that their findings suggest that the differences between gay and heterosexual individuals are not merely the result of social or environmental factors, but have a biological basis that can be detected through facial analysis. Regardless of its implications, the study has demonstrated the impressive capabilities of AI when it comes to analyzing large datasets and identifying patterns that are not immediately apparent to the human eye.8. "Finding such stars with very similar parameters as our sun but being five times more variable was surprising."The sun—made up mainly of hydrogen and helium—is an average-sized star that formed more than 4.5 billion years ago. However, the researchers say there are no signs that solar activity will be increasing any time soon.(1)According to Timo Reinhold, what causes the variability in brightness of the sun?A.Hydrogen and helium in the sun.B.The surface temperature of the sun.C.The diameter(直径)of the sun.D.Dark spots on its outer part.(2)Which of the following helped researchers prove the sun's inactivity?A.Scientific data of all the other stars.B.Data of sunspots observed in the past 400 years.C.9,000 years of data of the activities of the sun.D.Data of chemical element variants in icy trees.(3)What will probably happen if the sun becomes very active?A.There will be a decreased magnetic activity.B.The geology and climate of the Earth will be different.C.Satellites and other communications equipment will work better.D.People on the Earth have to live with the quite boring star.(4)What is the best title of this article?A.The sun: less active than similar starsB.The sun: less bright and intense than beforeC.Sun spots: a direct measure of solar activityD.Sun spots: the cause of electromagnetic events on EarthC.They have the same cognition level.D.They adapt to new environment quickly.(3)What is unique about dogs?A.Their cognition.B.Their sense of smell.ing tools.D.Exhibiting self-awareness.25.(8分)Airline travel causes roughly 2%—3% of the pollution that makes the greenhouse effect worse. Airplanes powered by a very common gas called hydrogen(氢)could change all of that. Last Thursday, a company called ZeroAvia made a successful test flight of what it calls the "largest hydrogen-powered aircraft in the world". Many companies are working on hydrogen-powered vehicles, but ZeroAvia's test flight used a plane that can seat 6 people—the largest hydrogen powered plane ever flown. ZeroAvia made a similar flight in June, but that one was battery-powered.Hydrogen can be used to power vehicles by combining it with oxygen in a "fuel cell", which is like a battery that never runs out as long as it has hydrogen. The chemical reaction which takes place between hydrogen and oxygen in a fuel cell creates electricity, but doesn't give off any pollution—only water. Thursday's flight was an important step in the company's HyFlyer project. The company is hoping to make it possible for airlines to carry small numbers of passengers for short distances without polluting. The company's next big goal is to make a longer flight—of about 465 kilometers or more—by the end of the year. ZeroAvia believes passengers could actually be flying on hydrogen-powered airplanes by 2023.Another company called Gravity Industries put on a test of its jet suit recently to show how it could help emergency medical workers reach injured people quickly. The jet suit is powered by small jets on each arm and one on the back. By pointing the jets at the ground, the pilot can take off. Returning to the ground is just a matter of pointing both arms out to the side. Richard Browning, the suit's inventor, flew up a mountain to find some people who were pretending to be hurt(for the test). To reach the spot by climbing the mountain would have taken 25 minutes. Mr. Browning was able to cover the same distance in just 90 seconds. One problem? The cost. The suit sells for about $440,000.(1)Compared with similar ones, what advantage does ZeroAvia's aircraft have?A.It has its own fuel cell.B.It flies faster and longer.C.It can be battery powered.D.It can contain more people.(2)What is ZeroAvia's opinion about its hydrogen-powered aircraft?A.It'll be more costly than ever.B.It'll be available for real soon.C.It'll rid the greenhouse effect.D.It'll get jet suits more popular.(3)Which aspect of the jet suit does paragraph 3 mainly focus on?A.How it helps people land.B.How it was tested.C.How it was invented.D.How it saves people's lives.(4)What is the suitable title for the text?A.New Flying Inventions Take offpanies Develop New PlanesC.Flying Fuel Cells Are Used WidelyD.Jet Suits Are on ZeroAvia's PlanesA.to dry your handsB.to wash away the soapC.to rub your hands carefullyD.to clean your fingers(3)The last paragraph mainly tells us ________.A.how to wash your hands correctlyB.why washing hand with soap is so importantC.the dangers of washing hands without soapD.when we should especially wash our hands with soap(4)In which part of newspaper would you most probably read this passage?A.Medical care.B.Public service.C.Health report.D.Advertisement.27. Then, in 2019, the 28-year-old Ugandan had an opportunity to do just the opposite. That's when Mbabazi learned of the Gulu for Women With Disabilities Union (GUWODU), a professional and social center in a small city in Uganda's north. There, she partnered with seven women on a portrait series that was a celebration of individuality and personal expression. "I was tired of the images I was seeing out there, especially here in Uganda, where people with disabilities are robbed of their personalities," said Mbabazi. "They're photographed as people who can't do anything. I didn't want my images to look like that."Over one year, she made four trips to Gulu and photographed women she met, including a land mine survivor missing a leg, a deaf mother of four, and a blind musician. They posed in custom dresses, created by a Kampala-based designer, against backdrops (背景幕布) of art and handiwork they had made. When Mbabazi asked the women how they wanted to be seen, they told her: as capable, equal, Intelligent. In other words, the dignity that Ugandans with special needs often are denied.Joyce Auma, 25, who uses wheelchair, chose a blue patterned top and skirt that contrasted beautifully with the vibrant green and blue backdrop. Another, Laker Irene Odwar, who lost her leg in a land mine at age 16, chose a pale blue blazer and a shirt with a smart silk scarf. On her last trip to Gulu, Mbabazi delivered large, framed copies of the portraits to those who posed for them. As Mbabazi explains, "They said, 'This shows me as I am in my full existence, my full body, as I am'." Mbabazi hopes the photos will be exhibited publicly, to help change how the women are seen, and treated, by others.4.The underlined words "fly on the wall" in the first paragraph means a photographer who _____.A. takes photos without being noticedB. takes photos with careful arrangementsC. makes a great difference with photosD. uses advanced technology in photographing5.What do the models Mbabazi chose have in commonA. They are good at making dresses.B. They are eager to become famous.C. They are disabled to some degree.D. They are into bright, vibrant color.6.Which of the following can best describe Mbabazi’s photographsA. Dull and conventional.B. Distinctive and expressive.C. Dreamlike and attractive.D. Unrealistic and creative.7.We can infer that the purpose of Mbabazi’s photographs is to _____.A. celebrate the individuality of Uganda womenB. show the real life of women with disabilitiesC. display the beauty of women in custom dressesD. challenge the way the world sees disabled womenCIn recent times, with the advent of electric cars, the idea to fuel them with solar energy also gained momentum. Electric cars-even though they run on electricity and don't use fossil fuels—are still NOT GREEN! People suffer from the misconception that not using fossil fuel means "green" which is kind of absurd, considering theelectricity we use is generated by burning the very same fuels! However, what if your car had solar panels that could charge it Now that would indeed be a green machine! Basically, as much as we would like to incorporate this energy source into our car, the efficiency of the currently used solar panels is subject to the fulfillment of different criteria.Firstly, solar panels occupy a large amount of area. An average car has an area of 10-25 sq.ft. on the roof, which can generate between 50-150 W under ideal conditions. This is hardly enough power to illuminate a light bulb! Also, moderate sunny temperature needs to be ideal, as extremely high temperatures can reduce the efficiency of the solar panels. Cars must work in all weather conditions, so if a solar panel limits the car's functionality, it becomes practically useless. More importantly, the cost of the panels and development required to power the electronics using the sun's energy outweighs the benefits that solar panels provide. Most cars today that have solar roofs, use the solar energy to power only a few basic functions of the car. While there is still time before we will be able to drive cars fully powered by solar energy, there are some alternatives, such as solar power stations, which are being designed to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels for electricity. Solar-powered vehicles are surely the future, but not the nearfuture. As the cost of solar panels continues to fall and their efficiency increases, things will begin to look much "brighter" for this alternative and sustainable option!8.Why aren't electric cars environmentally friendlyA. They won't work as well as the common cars.B. They are not powered by solar energy.C. They run on electricity produced by burning fuels.D. They cause more pollution to the world.9.What can we learn from the third paragraphA. Temperatures have little effect on solar panels.B. Powering the electronics costs little.C. A car's roof generates enough power to light a bulb.D. The performance of current solar panels depends on various factors.10.What can we infer about solar energy in the car industryA. Most cars have solar roofs.B. Cars can be currently powered from solar power stations.C. Cars partly powered by solar energy are on the road.D. Solar cars will soon be available.11.Which of the following can be the best title for the textA. What do solar cars look likeB. Why don't we power the car with solar energyC. How do solar cars workD. Could solar cars replace the electric carsDJEANS have long been a necessity in closets across the US. After all, not many pieces of clothing can last long enough to be worn daily, yet can also be worn when dressing up or down. However, Americans 'love of jeans is beginning to wear thin.Sales of the iconic blue pants have fallen 6 percent during the past year after decades of almost steady growth, while sales of yoga tights have climbed 7 percent, according to the NPD Group, a US market research company.Women are replacing their jeans and ballet flat shoes with yoga tights and sneakers for just about any weekend activity. ASleep is a necessity for all animals, and humans spend around one third of their lives sleeping. Despite this, the purposes of sleep remain fairly elusive to scientists. While we know that sleep is important for physical and mental restoration, whether or not there are additional functions still remains unknown. One of the most widely accepted theories is that sleep is essential for memory consolidation, with a large body of research supporting this claim. In order for memories to be retained, they must first be transferred from short-term storage to long-term memory. This transfer process is known as memory consolidation.A number of studies have found that sleep plays a critical role in this process, with sleep deprived individuals often struggling to remember information they have newly acquired. Moreover, research has shown that memories are actively processed and reinforced during sleep, providing greater resilience against forgetting. In addition, studies have found that specific stages of sleep relate to particular memory processes, with Sleep spindles (brief oscillations of brain activity) associated with the assimilation (吸收) of new information and slow wave sleep associated with the consolidation of that information. While the case for sleep and memory consolidation is strong, scientists say that it is not the entire story. For example, studies have also found that sleep improves cognitive (认知) flexibility, creativity and problem-solving. Moreover, it has been suggested that sleep may also play important roles in regulating metabolism, immune function and emotional stability.Despite our limited understanding of why we sleep, one thing is clear: a good night’s sleep is important for both our physical and mental wellbeing. This will allow you to create multiple outfits with fewer items. For example, bring a few basic tops and pants that can be dressed up or down. Also, pack lightweight layers that can be worn in different combinations to adjust to changing weather conditions.Third, don't forget to pack items that are specific to your travel destination. For example, if you are going to a beach, bring a swimsuit, sunscreen, and a hat. If youare going to a city, bring comfortable shoes for walking and a map or guidebook. However, research shows that the truth is a bit morecomplicated. While left-handers do indeed have unique strengths and abilities, they also face certain challenges due to living in a right-handed world. One advantage of being left-handed is improved creativity. Several studies have shown that left-handers tend to be more creative and innovative than right-handers. This may be due to the fact that the right hemisphere of the brain, which governs creativity, is typically more developed in left-handed individuals. Famous left-handed artists and musicians include Leonardo da Vinci, Jimi Hendrix, and Paul McCartney. Left-handedness also seems to be linked to better spatial awareness and problem-solving skills. One study found that left-handers were better able to mentally rotate objects in their minds, a skill that is important for tasks such as solving spatial puzzles or navigating complex environments. However, being left-handed can also come with certain difficulties. For example, many tools, utensils, and products are designed for right-handed use, making them cumbersome or uncomfortable for left-handers to use. This can range from simple things like scissors and can openers to more complex tools like musical instruments or power tools. Furthermore, left-handed individuals may face a higher risk of certain health issues, such as migraines, schizophrenia, and autoimmune disorders. Overall, being left-handed can offer unique advantages and challenges. However, it’s important to remember that being right-handed is still considered the norm in many societies, and left-handed individuals may sometimes feel out of place or overlooked as a result.8. Which hemisphere of the brain is typically more developed in left-handers?A. The left hemisphereB. The right hemisphereC. The central hemisphereD. The peripheral hemisphere9. What skill are left-handers better at according to one study?A. Learning languagesB. Solving math problemsC. Mentally rotating objectsD. Playing musical instruments10. Although it’s fast and convenient, this type of communication can lack the warmth and personal touch of an old-fashioned handwritten letter. Why not combine the two by writing a digital letter? With websites like Handwrytten and Inkly, you can type out a message and have it transformed into a handwritten note that is then mailed to the recipient. The result is a more personal and intimate way to communicate in today’s technology-driven world. Not only does a handwritten note feel more special than an email, but it also shows that you took the time and effort to write it out by hand, which can make the recipient feel more valued and appreciated. There are many occasions where a handwritten note can make a real impact, such as thanking someone for a gift or for their hospitality, congratulating someone on an achievement, or simply letting someone know that you’re thinking of them.In an age where everything is digital, taking the time to write out a heartfelt note can really set you apart and make a lasting impression.12.What’s the author’s opinion about handwritten letters compared to digital ones?A) Handwritten letters are less convenient.B) Digital letters are more personal.C) Handwritten letters are warmer and more personal.D) Digital letters are more special.13.What’s the function of Handwrytten and Inkly?A) They transform written letters into digital ones.B) They combine the features of texting and email.C) They allow users to write handwritten letters online.D) They turn digital messages into handwritten notes.14.What can we do if we want to show our appreciation or congratulations with something more special and personalized?A) Write an email with expressive words.B) Combine a digital message with a handwritten one.C) Write a long handwritten letter.D) Use apps like Handwrytten and Inkly.15.Which of the following statements is true?A) Handwritten notes are not necessary in the digital era.B) Digital letters take more time and effort than handwritten ones.C) A handwritten note can make a recipient feel more valued.D) Sending an email is more intimate than writing a letter.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

The chemical reaction which takes place between hydrogen and oxygen in a fuel cell creates electricity, but doesn't give off any pollution—only water.Thursday's flight was an important step in the company's HyFlyer project. The company is hoping to make itpossible for airlines to carry small numbers of passengers for short distances without polluting.
