Stubbornly, we wait for someone else to reach out to us—believing this is the only way we can forgive or rekindle a friendship or family relationship. An acquaintance of mine, whose health isn’t very good, recently told me that she hadn’t spoken to her son in almost three years. She said that she and her son had had a disagreement about his wife and that she wouldn’t speak to him again unless he called first. When I sug gested that she be the one to reach out, she resisted initially and said, “I can’t do that. He’s the one who should apologize.” She was literally willing to die before reaching out to her only son. After a little gentle encouragement, however, she did decide to be the first one to reach out. To her amazement, her son was grateful for her willingness to call and offered an apology of his own. As is usually the case when someone takes the chance and reaches out, everyone wins.Whenever we hold on to our anger, we turn “small stuff” into really “big stuff” in our minds. We start to believe that our positions are more important than our happiness. They are not. If you want to be a more peaceful person, you must understand that being right is almost never more important than allowing yourself to be happy. The way to be happy is to let go, and reach out. Let other people be right. This doesn’t mean that you’re wrong. Everything will be fine. You’ll experience the peace of letting go, as well as the joy of letting o thers be right. You’ll also notice that, as you reach out and let others be “right,” they will become less defensive and more loving toward you. They might even reach back. But if for some reason they don’t, that’s okay too. You’ll have the inner satisfact ion of knowing that you have done your part to create a more loving world, and certainly you’ll be more peaceful yourself. 4.The underlined word “rekindle” in Paragraph 1 probably means “________”. A.develop B.recoverC.accept D.replace5.According to the passage, the author’s friend never spoke to her son for three years because ________.A.she had got an argument with her husbandB.she had disagreed about her son’s marriageC.she had got an argument about her daughter-in-lawD.she had disliked her son’s w ife for many years6.Which of the following is NOT the reason for people to be unwilling to apologize first? A.People believe that they are right.B.People always wait for others to offer an apology first.C.People consider the position more important than happiness.D.People want to get an inner satisfaction.7.The purpose of the passage is to ________.A.instruct the readers how to apologizeB.teach the readers how to gain inner peaceC.tell the readers to reach out first when there are painful eventsD.inform the readers the importance of being forgivingA new report from University of East Anglia(UEA)shows that exposure to green space reduces the risk of type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stress, and high blood pressure. Populations with higher levels of green space exposure are also more likely to report good overall health.Lead author Caoimhe Twohig-Bennett, from UEA’S Norwich Medical School, said, “Spending time in nature certainly makes us feel healthier, but until now the impact on our long-term wellbeing hasn’t been fully understood. We gathered evidence from over 140 studies involving more than 290 million people to see whether nature really does provide a health boost.”The research team studied data from 20 countries including the UK, the US, Spain, France, Germany, Australia and Japan—where “forest bathing” is already a popular practice. “Green space” was defined as open, undeveloped land with natural vegetation including urban green space, which included parks and street greenery. The team analyzed how the health of people with little access to green space compared to that of people with the highest amounts of exposure.“We found that spending time in or living close to natural green space is associated with diverse and significant health benefits. It reduces the risk of type TT diabetes, cardiovascular disease, premature death, and preterm birth, and increases sleep duration. People living closer to nature also had reduced diastolic blood pressure, heart rate and stress. In fact, one of the really interesting things we found is that exposure to green space significantly reduces people’s levels of salivary cortisol—a physiological marker of stress. This is really important because in the UK, 11.7 million working days are lost annually d ue to stress, depression or anxiety.”“Forest bathing is really popular as a therapy in Japan, with participants spending time inthe forest either sitting or lying down, or just walking around. Our study shows that perhaps they have the right idea! Although we have looked at a large body of research on the relationship between green space and health, we don’t know exactly what it is that causes this relationship. People living near green space likely have more opportunities for physical activity and socializing. Meanwhile, exposure to a wide variety of bacteria present in natural areas may also have benefits for the immune system and reduce inflammation (炎症),” Twohig-Bennett stated.Study co-author Prof Andy Jones, also from UEA, said, “We often reach for m edical treatment when we’re unwell but exposure to health-promoting environments is increasingly recognized as both preventing and helping treat disease. Our study shows that the size of these benefits can be enough to have a meaningful clinical(临床的) impact.”The research team hopes that their findings will prompt doctors and other healthcare professionals to advise patients to spend more time in green space and natural areas. 8.What do we know about exposure to green space from the first two paragraphs?A.290 million people will see its effectiveness.B.People have been cured of several diseases by this way.C.People seeing less green space can’t report good health.D.People haven’t realized its value completely.9.From the research team’s definition of “green space”, we can infer that . A.green space often exists in places with small populationsB.space in the countryside is certainly green spaceC.an urban green belt is a kind of green spaceD.green space in the cities usually has little effe cts on people’s health10.What does the author do in Paragraph 4?A.Analyze the research process.B.Introduce the research findings.C.Show his concern about people’s health.D.Explain why green space is good for patients.11.Prof Andy Jones holds the view that .A.their study will improve the professionalism of doctorsB.exposure to green space can help treat disease effectivelyC.one should see a doctor immediately when unwellD.people are increasingly going to health-promoting spacesIn my mind, there is a moving story about a skinny young boy who loved football with all his heart.Practice after practice, he eagerly gave everything he had. But being half the size of the other boys, he got absolutely nowhere. Despite his hard training at all the games, this hopeful athlete sat on the bench and hardly ever played. This teenager lived alone with his father, and the relationship between the two of them was very special. Even though the son was always on the bench, his father was always in the stands cheering. He never missed a game. This young man was still the smallest of the class when he entered high school. But his father continued to encourage him.The young man loved football and was determined to try his best at every practice, and perh aps he’d get to play when he became a senior. All through high school he never missed a practice nor a game but remained a benchwarmer. Besides, his faithful father was always in the stands, always with words of encouragement for him. When the young man went to college, he decided to try out for the football team as a “walk-on”. Everyone firmly believed that he could never make the cut, but he did.The news that he had survived the cut thrilled him so much that he rushed to the nearest phone and called his father. His father shared his excitement and was sent season tickets for all the college games. This persistent young athlete never missed practice during his four years at college, but actually he never got the real chance to play in a game.It was at the end of his senior football season that the coach met him with a telegram. The young man read the telegram and he became totally silent. Swallowing hard, he mumbled to the coach, “My father died this morning. Is it all right if I miss practice today?” The coach put his arm gently around his should and said, “Take the rest of the week off, son. And don’t even plan to come back to the game on Saturday.”Saturday arrived, and the game was not going well. In the third quarter, when the team was ten points behind, a silent young man quietly slipped into the empty locker room and put on his football gear. As he ran onto the sidelines, the coach and his players were surprised to see their faithful teammate back so soon. “Coach, please let me play. I’ve just got to play today,” said the young man. The coach pretended not to hear him. There was no way he wanted his worst player in this close play-off game. But the young man insisted, and finally feeling sorry for the kid, thecoach gave in. “All right,” he said. “You can go in.” Before long, the coach, the players and everyone in the stands could not believe their eyes. This little unknown, who had never played before, was doing everything right. The opposing team could not stop him. He ran, passed, blocked, and tackled like a star. His team began to succeed. The score was soon tied. In the closing seconds of the game, this kid got a pass and ran all the way for the winning touchdown. Finally, after the stands had emptied, the coach noticed that this young man was sitting quietly in the corner all alone. The coach came to him and said, “Kid, you were unbelievably fantastic! Tell me what got into you? How did you do it?”He looked at the coach, tears in his eyes, and said, “Well, you knew my dad died, but did you know tha t my dad was blind?” The young man swallowed hard and forced a smile, “Dad came to all my games, but today was the first time he could see me play, and I wanted to show him I could make it!”12.What does the underlined sentence “he got absolutely nowhere” mean?A.He could never make his father see his performance clearly.B.There was no coach to train him well enough to be a good player.C.There was no chance of his becoming a top athlete in this sport.D.He had no idea at all what kind of person he wanted to be in the future.13.From the passage, we can infer that__________.A.the young man’s father had a great positive influence on himB.the young man’s coach played an important role in his growthC.not until his father passed away did the young man train hardD.the young man’s road to success in football was always smooth14.Why did the young man return to the match on Saturday?A.He planned to make money to cure his father of his blindness.B.He thought he was much better than other players in his team.C.He wanted to defeat the opposing team in this significant game.D.He hoped his dead father could be proud of his performance.15.What’s the best title of the passage?A.A thrilling football match B.Determined father and sonC.The power of dreams D.The encouragement of a coach二、七选五How to Improve Vocabulary FastYour vocabulary refers to the words in a language you are familiar with. 2020-2021学年江苏扬州高一上英语月考试卷
2020-2021学年江苏扬州高一上英语月考试卷一、阅读理解1.After my father died at the age of 83, many of his friends told me how much him—how generous he was, how outgoing, how funny, how caring. I was surprised at these descriptions. During my teenage years, there was little said to me that was not criticism. I remember him as angry. But now, ten years after his death, I recall events that seem to contradict my memory of him. When I was 16, he handed down to me the family's 1957 Chevy(雪佛兰). Neither one of us knew at the time that it was the coolest car anyone my age could have. When I was in the third grade, he proudly accompanied me to the school tumbling contest, where I won first prize. One day, while I was in single digits, he suggested we play catch in the front yard. This offer to spend time together was so unexpected that I didn't quite understand what I was supposed to do.When I graduated from high school, my father offered to buy me a tuxedo(男士无尾晚礼服). I refused because my father always shunned gifts. I felt with my refusal, that somehow in a strange logic, I was being a good son. I wish now that I could have let him buy me a tuxedo, let him be a dad.My father sold real estate(地产)but he wanted to be in show business. I was probably five years old when I saw him in a bit part at the Call Board theater on Melrose Place in Hollywood. He came on in the second act and served a drink. The theater existed until a few years ago and is now finally defunct and, I believe, a lamp shop.My father's attitude toward my show, "Business Accomplishments", was critical. After my first appearance on Saturday Night Live in 1976, he wrote a bad review of me in the newsletter of the Newport Board of Realtors where he was president.(1)During his teenage years, the author thought his father was ______.A.generousB.outgoingC.angryD.caring(2)The underlined part "This offer" in the second paragraph refers to "______".A.attending to school tumbling contest togetherB.driving a car togetherC.playing a game togetherD.buying a car for the writer(3)Which word has the same meaning as the underlined word "shunned"?A.avoidedB.boughtC.shoneD.loved(4)What did the father think of the author's acting on Saturday Night Live?A.He liked it very much.B.He didn't like it.C.He didn't watch it.D.He didn't care.2.(1)The passage is most likely to be taken from ______.A.the InternetB.a magazineC.a newspaperD.a book(2)The purpose of this article is to ______.A.introduce some effective weight loss productsB.help overweight people find useful informationC.tell overweight people how to have a healthy dietD.introduce books about losing weight(3)Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A.Free Weight Loss Articles enjoys the greatest popularity on the site.B.Monthly Spotlight tells you how many calories a certain food contains.C.In Ultimate Weight Loss Secrets, we can ask and answer questions on how to lose weight.D.We can find ranked weight loss products to choose from.3.Are you an introvert(内向的人)or an extrovert? Before you say you are either one, you should know that there is a third option.According to a recent article in The Wall Street Journal, experts say there's a middle ground between the two personality types—people who they call "ambiverts(中间性格者)".Introverts don't like crowds and enjoy keeping their thoughts to themselves, while extroverts, on the other hand, like meeting new people and being the center of attention. Ambiverts, as the name suggests, have both introverted and extroverted characteristics. But neither set of characteristics is completely in control. As a result, they can move between being social and being alone with greater ease than either extroverts or introverts. For example, ambiverts often enjoy other people's company. But after a long day of hard work, they sometimes prefer to read a book or watch a TV series at home alone."It is like they're bilingual," Daniel Pink, the host of Crowd Control, a US TV series on human behavior, told The Wall Street Journal. "They have a wider range of skills and can connect with a wider range of people in the same way someone who speaks English and Spanish can."Ambiverts have gotten more attention in recent years, thanks to books, TED talks and consulting(咨询的)firms focusing on how personality traits(特征)change people's behavior in relationships and careers. In fact, roughly two-thirds of people in the US are ambiverts, according to a personality survey done by Adam M. Grant, a professor ofpsychology at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School.Grant believes ambiversion takes good parts from introversion and extroversion. "The ambivert advantage comes from being enthusiastic enough to persuade, but at the same time, listening carefully to others and avoiding seeming overly confident or excited," he told Forbes magazine. But he also points out that unlike extroverts and introverts who tend to know what gives them energy, ambiverts can sometimes get stuck. They are often unsure which side of their personality should lead in a given situation.(1)What is the article mainly about?A.Differences between introverts and extroverts.B.Why ambiverts have gotten more attention recently.C.Characteristics and advantages of ambiverts.D.How personality traits change people's behavior.(2)According to the article, ambiverts ______.A.prefer being the center of attention to being aloneB.tend to connect with more people than introvertsually work hard and are successful in their careersD.want to keep their thoughts to themselves all the time(3)What advantage does Grant think ambiverts have over introverts and extroverts?A.They know what gives them energy.B.They seem more enthusiastic and confident.C.They have more balanced personalities.D.They can deal with a given situation better.(4)The underlined word "bilingual" in Paragraph 5 probably means ______.A.able to speak two languages equally wellB.always ready to help those in needC.able to adapt to a new environment wellD.good at drawing attention from the crowd4."My dear lady," says Holmes. "You're shivering. Are you old? Do you want a cup of hot tea?" "I'm not cold," the woman replies, "I fear for my life!""We are here to help you. Don't worry about anything. I don't know you. But how do you know these things?""I see a return ticket in your glove. I see fresh mud on the left arm of your dress. But they are no longer rich. They have nothing except a small piece of land and a huge old house. We are living in the house. Dr. Roylott is using my mother's money for expenses(开支). Part of it was for my sister and me. It was for our marriages."Holmes is sitting in his chair. His eyes are closed. He is listening carefully to Helen's story. He hears every detail.Helen continues, "My stepfather has no friends. He fights with everyone. He is strong and gets angry quickly. Everyone is afraid of him.""He has no friends at all?" asks Holmes."No. He talks to no one except the gypsies(吉普赛人). They are poor people who travel from place to place. Crowds celebrate with viewing parties, flockingto the most popular locations to take photos and have picnics underneath the branches. But this year, cherry blossom season has come and gone in the blink of an eye, in one of the earliest blooms on record. Scientists warn it’s a symptom of the larger climate crisis threatening ecosystems everywhere.Yasuyuki Aono, a researcher atOsakaPrefectureUniversity, has gathered records fromKyotoback to 812 AD from historical documents and diaries. In the central city ofKyoto, cherry blossoms peaked on March 26, the earliest in more than 1,200 years, Aono said. And in the capitalTokyo, cherry blossoms reached full bloom on March 22, the second-earliest date on record. The peak bloom dates shift every year, depending on numerous factors including weather and rainfall, but have shown a general trend of moving earlier and earlier. InKyoto, the peak date stayed around mid-April for centuries, but began moving into early April during the 1800s. The date has only dipped into late March a handful of times in recorded history.“Sakura blooms are very temperature sensitive,” said Aono. “Flowering and full bloom could be earlier or later depending on the temperature alone,” he said. “The temperature was low in the 1820s, but it has risen by about 3.5 degrees Celsius to this day.”This year’s seasons in particular influenced the blossom dates, he added. The winter was very cold, but the spring came fast and unusually warm.4. What is the best title of the passage?A. Cherry blossom celebrations.B. Warning of a climate crisis.C. A strong love for cherry blossom.D. Cherry blossom season coming earlier.5. What does the underlined word “flocking” mean?A. Blocking.B. Flooding.C. Running.D. Following.6. What can we infer from paragraph 5?A. The peak blossom dates fall on a fixed date.B. The cherry blossom rarely peaks in March.C. The peak bloom dates mainly depend on weather and rainfall.D. Cherry blossom peaks around mid-April inTokyo.7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?A. To inform people the date of cherry blossom.B. To show a study on cherry blossom dates.C. To present a Japanese tradition of cherry blossom celebration.D. To make people aware of the influence of climate change on cherry blossom.CLearning to say “yes, and”When I first heard about the improvisation (即兴交流) class, I was hesitating. As a quiet and shy girl, I feared improvising in front of strangers. However,I knew I wanted to work as a science communicator after finishing my Ph.D., so it seemed like a perfect opportunity to learn how to speak and communicate with others effectively. I signed up, knowing the experience would give me help.During our first class, we learned an important concept of improvisation: “yes, and.” It means that, as improvisers, we’d better accept what fellow performers say. If someone says that rhinos (犀牛) are librarians, for example, then rhinos are librarians. We do not question the logic; we say “yes” and then continue with the scene as if nothing is wrong. The first few scenes were hard, but as weeks turned into months, I became more comfortable andeven started to enjoy our classes. I became better at listening, relating to my conversation partners, and communicating clearly in the moment. Once when I was giving a presentation about my science, an audience member surprised me with a question that didn’t grow out of the information I’d presented. Instead of getting confused and nervous, I took the “yes, and” approach—accepting the question and letting my mind focus on why it was asked. That helped me find an appropriate answer. I got pretty excited about it.The benefits of improvisation go beyond communication. Before attending the class, I would get stuck when my experiments produced unexpected data, thinking that I had made a mistake. But now, instead of getting discouraged, I will stay open to the possibility that the results are real, keep exploring the data and end up identifying a new type of cell—one that isn’t behaving as expected.I think all scientists can benefit from this lesson. If the data say rhinos are librarians, then it’s worth findingout whether rhinos are, in fact, librarians. As scientists, our job isn’t to challenge data that support a preconceived (先入为主的) story, but to say “yes, and.”8. Why did the author attend the improvisation class?A. To get a different experience.B. To finish her Ph.D. at university.C. To give up her job as a science communicator.D. To improve her speaking and communicating ability.9. What was the author’s change after attending the improvisation class?A. She formed her own idea quickly.B. She came up with lots of creative responses.C. She paid more attention to the logic of answers.D. She became a good listener before giving an opinion.10. The author mentions applying the “yes, and” approach to her scientific experiments to ______.A. explain the process of using the methodB. prove the benefits of the improvisation classC. share her own research experiences with readersD. attract fellow scientists to attend the improvisation class11. What can be inferred about scientists from the last paragraph?A. They should attend the improvisation class.B. They should question all preconceived ideas.C. They should carry on research by admitting earlier data.D. They should try to improve their professional knowledge.DIt’s become an accepted part of keeping up to date with extended family and friends, but if schoolchildren were in their parents’ shoes, the majority wouldn’t share posts of their sons and daughters online. Over 55% saidthey would not upload news about, or images of, their children to their social media feeds, according to survey of over 16,000 pupils by Votes for Schools. While some were concerned about being embarrassed or the longevity of content which could remain online indefinitely, others expressed concern about their personal data beingcompromised. One of the pupils surveyed said, “Although our parents mean well, sometimes theconsequenceof a post can be disastrous.”In response to thesurvey, children’s mental health charity Place2Be and law firm Mishcon de Reya have produced three films ahead of the Christmas holidays – the best period for parental oversharing. In one video, about safety online, 10-year-old Adavan said, “If you share anything with your family, you know who’s going to see it. But if you share it publicly, there are millions of people who can see your picture.”Joe Hancock, a security lead at Mishcon de Reya, encouraged parents to share wisely. “Simple steps, such as checking your privacy settings and asking others not to share content of your children on their accounts if they have not updated their privacy settings, are a good start. And, as we found out from the children during filming, having their permission is key,” he said. The study marks a shift away from the usual debate about teaching children to use the Internet safely. Sandra Davis, head of the law firm’s family department, said, “Children are the experts on the real and immediate impact of sharenting(晒娃)– the full extent of which we cannot know yet. We must ensure we listen to children and take their views into consideration now in order to avoid any unintendedconsequences further down the line.”12.What’s most pupils’ attitude towards sharing posts about children?A. Skeptical.B. Unconcerned.C. Tolerant.D. Unwilling.13.What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 2?A. Summarize the previous paragraph.B. Provide some advice for parents.C. Predict the consequence of sharing posts.D. Give reasons for the result of the survey.14.What should parents first pay attention to according to Joe Hancock?A. Safety.B. Consequence.C. Wisdom.D. Health.15.What can we learn from the last paragraph?A. Parents should take children’s opinions into account.B. Parents should teach children to use the Internet safely.C. Children must make sure to listen to their parents.D. Children should avoid unintended consequences of sharenting.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Coming back has been a tougher transition than expected. It’s not just about transitioning back to home life; it’s also about handling the strange situation of being a different person in the same old environment. I am most terrified of waking up in a few months and feeling like I’m the same person I was before I studied abroad. This situation is especially strange with people who have known me for a long time, like my parents, who witnessed all my major life changes before this one. I didn’t realize how much I’d changed until I interacted with them and close friends. Despite only being away for three and a half months, I quickly noticed the differences between who I was before and who I am now. Over the past few weeks at home, I’ve been wondering how to maintain the positive changes and qualities gained from my semester abroad.I’ve realized that surroundings and situations greatly influence mindset, and keeping a certain mindset while losing its corresponding (相对应的) environment is challenging. For instance, being in Madrid taught me to be more relaxed and stress-free. However, returning to Penn State with its demanding course load makes maintaining that mentality (心态) difficult. I’ve come to realize the problem that perpetual stress about school isn’t healthy, especially after experiencing a semester of travel, fun, and academic success. Therefore, I’ve decided to work hard and study as usual but occasionally give myself a break, and do what I can to avoid getting over-stressed about tests and assignments. This means I will put in effort when necessary in order to make sure I am always caught up or ahead of class material.Coming home has been more challenging than expected, but I’m confident I’ll get throughit in the next few weeks. Nevertheless, I’m determined to maintain the important lessons I learned about myself and others in Madrid.4.What was the author’s biggest concern when returning home?A.Going back to his original self.B.Adapting to new surroundings.C.Experiencing culture shock.D.Missing old acquaintances.5.What did the author realize after returning home?A.He should make his family familiar with his positive changes.B.He should change his mentality to care less about his study.C.He should adapt his mindset to fit into the old learning environment.D.He should apply himself to his study to stay ahead of class.6.What does the underlined word “perpetual” in Paragraph 3 mean?A.Current.B.Improper.C.Unnecessary.D.Continuous. 7.What is the passage mainly about?A.The sufferings of reverse culture shock.B.The reflections on personal growth.C.The adaptations to new environments.D.The success in academic performance. As we age, even if we’re healthy, the heart just isn’t as efficient in processing oxygen as it used to be. In most people the first signs show up in their 50s or early 60s. And among people who don’t exercise, the changes can start even sooner.“Think of a rubber band. In the beginning, it is flexible, but put it in a drawer for 20 years and it will become dry and easily broken,” says Dr. Ben Levine, a heart specialist at the University of Texas. That’s what happens to the heart. Fortunately for those in midlife, Levine is finding that even if you haven’t been an enthusiastic exerciser, getting in shape now may help improve your aging heart.Levine and his research team selected volunteers aged between 45 and 64 who did not exercise much but were otherwise healthy. Participants were randomly divided into two groups. The first group participated in a program of nonaerobic (无氧) exercise—balance training and weight training—three times a week. The second group did high-intensity aerobic exercise under the guidance of a trainer for four or more days a week. After two years, the second group saw remarkable improvements in heart health.“We took these 50-year-old hearts and turned the clock back to 30-or 35-year-old hearts,” says Levine. “And the reason they got so much stronger and fitter was that their hearts could now fill a lot better and pump (泵送) a lot more blood during exercise.” But the hearts of those who participated in less intense exercise didn’t change, he says.“The sweet spot in life to start exercising, if you haven’t already, is in late middle age when the heart still has flexibility,” Levine says. “We put healthy 70-year-olds through a yearlong exercise training program, and nothing happened to them at all.”Dr. Nieca Goldberg, a spokeswoman for the American Heart Association, says Levine’s findings are a great start. But the study was small and needs to be repeated with far larger groups of people to determine exactly which aspects of an exercise routine make the biggest difference. 8.What does Levine want to explain by mentioning the rubber band?A.The right way of exercising.B.The causes of a heart attack.C.The difficulty of keeping fit.D.The aging process of the heart.9.In which aspect were the two groups different in terms of research design?A.Diet plan.B.Professional background.C.Exercise type.D.Previous physical condition.10.What does Levine’s research find?A.Middle-aged hearts get younger with aerobic exercise.B.High-intensity exercise is more suitable for the young.C.It is never too late for people to start taking exercise.D.The more exercise we do, the stronger our hearts get.11.What does Dr. Nieca Goldberg suggest?A.Making use of the findings.B.Interviewing the study participants.C.Conducting further research.D.Clarifying the purpose of the study. In the spring, the western tanagers (唐纳雀) prepared to migrate (迁徙) thousands of miles to the forests of the Mountain West, flying through grasslands, deserts, and occasionally, suburban yards. To fuel them on their lengthy journey, western tanagers feed on insects and berries. They must take advantage of the early-season boom in insects that started with springtime plant growthto produce healthy young. But as global climate change caused spring to start earlier, birds such as western tanagers were arriving at their destination after what was known as “green-up”, when flowers began blooming and insects popped up. With the shift of the time when plants put out new leaves, western tanagers became more likely to reach their destinations when food is in shortage or after insect numbers have begun to drop.Scott Loss, a professor at Oklahoma State University and his colleagues used satellite imagery to calculate the average start of spring green-up along the typical migration routes of 150 North American bird species, and then compared that timing with the current green-up. They found that spring was indeed beginning earlier along birds’ migration routes. The trend continued this year. The paper continued to build this picture of the inability of birds to track the changing seasons caused by climate change. Timing mismatches between birds and their food could affect whether birds survived the migration and how many chicks they had.Morgan Tingley, a researcher at UCLA said that the migration research could indicate conservation efforts in the future. “Part of it suggested which species were vulnerable (易受伤害的) to various threats,” Tingley said. “This added to the knowledge about vulnerability of a wide range of bird species.” And he hoped that the information would serve to highlight the urgent need to lower greenhouse-gas emissions as fast as possible: “It was really important, if we couldn’t address climate change immediately, to try to stop habitat loss as much as we can.”12.During the migration, what will happen to the western tanagers after “green-up” ?A.They will struggle to find enough insects and berries.B.They will have difficulty finding suitable nesting sites.C.They will hardly find blooming flowers for reproduction.D.They will find it hard to survive harsher weather conditions.13.What is the direct result of the timing mismatch between birds and their food?A.The loss of birds’ habitats.B.The decrease of birds’ survival rate.C.The contribution to the greenhouse effect.D.The increase of difficulty in biodiversity conservation.14.What is Morgan Tingley’s attitude towards the research findings in the last paragraph?A.Uncertain.B.Critical.C.Concerned.D.Indifferent.15.Which of the following is the best title for the text?A.The Diverse Patterns of Bird MigrationB.The Timing Mismatch of Western TanagersC.The Impact of Climate Change on Migratory BirdsD.The Vulnerability of Bird Species to Various ThreatsThese days, most people like using messaging apps when they need to communicate with someone. But sometimes making a call is unavoidable. However, this simple act can actually be a nightmare for some people. 16 . If this sounds familiar to you, you might be one of the millions of people who suffer from telephobia — the fear of speaking over the phone.17 When speaking face-to-face, we use facial expressions and gestures that help each other follow the conversation. This is not the case over the phone. And the idea of speaking with someone on the phone makes some people so terrified that they will freeze up and look foolish. However, there are things that one suffering from this condition can do to ease this fear. One thing that those with telephobia can do before a call is smile. 18 It won’t remove the anxiety altogether, but it will take the edge off it.Similarly, imagining how the call will go before you make it can also help things go more smoothly. That will make you feel less nervous and help you predict some possible problems. There’s no need to spend hours on this, just a few minutes forming several ideas of what you want to say. 19 This is particularly useful for dealing with the fear of not being able to express yourself spontaneously (自然地).And finally, when faced with receiving a call, you don’t always have to pick up. 20 A.Doing so can help you feel more relaxed.B.It’s often the opening lines that give us the most anxiety.C.Their heart race and their hands sweat at the very thought of it.D.People who feel comfortable in social situations may experience telephobia.E.The most important thing is to be aware of your fear and take steps to deal with it.F.You can even write down some brief notes to remind yourself of your talking.G.There’s nothing wrong with calling the person back later when you feel more comfortable.二、完形填空Every day on the way to work, I drive down a street lined with pine trees.

Attendees at the next Annual Meeting of the newly formed Jane Austen Society were expressing great sadness to the loss of this relic to an American when Alberta H. Burke rose to her feet. "I am the American who bought Jane's hair, and if the Society would like to have it I shall be glad to make a contribution of it.'"The Society agreed, and the hair is now in the Jane Austen House at Chawton. But Mrs Burke's collection of Austen's letters and manuscripts(手稿)was donated to the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York, combined with other letters purchased for the library.Having kept the hair and lost the handwriting, English Janeites may cast envious glances towards New York, where an exhibition of letters and manuscripts, together with first and early illustrated editions of Austen's novels and other related material, currently occupies part of the Morgan. A good modern edition of Austen's letters was published by R. W. Chapman in 1932 and updated in 1952; in 1995, Deirdre Le Faye re-edited the collection for Oxford University Press. It represents a small fraction of Austen's output, estimated to have been around 3,000 letters, mostly written to her sister Cassandra. As Virginia Woolf imagines their loss, "when Miss Cassandra Austen grew old, and the growth of her sister's fame made her suspect that a time might come when strangers would try to find out and scholars make guesses about, she burnt, at great cost to herself, every letter that could satisfy their curiosity, and spared only what she judged to be too unimportant to be of interest”. Even those that escaped have had lines removed by cutting. Nevertheless, much ofinterest remains. Visitors may not read all seventeen letters on display. But those with the eyes to focus will be able to find evidence of Austen's sharp tongue, as when a neighbour's wife is discovered to be "everything that the Neighbourhood could wish her, silly and cross". We can see her sense of the ridiculous, her talent for skillful characterization and a writer's high spirits that rarely desert her for long.24.Where can people see the only proved lock of Jane Austen's hair housed?A. SothebyB. Alberta H. Burke's houseC. the Jane Austen House at ChawtonD. the Pierpont Morgan Library25.Why may English Janeites cast envious glances towards New York?A. Because a small fraction of Austen's output, estimated to have been around 3,000 letters, currently occupies part of the Morgan.B. Because though her hair was kept in Britain, many other things left by Austen were in New York.C. Because a good modern edition of Austen's letters was published in New York.D. Because Deirdre Le Faye re-edited Austen's collection for the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York.26.Which of the foll owing does the underlined word "relic” in Paragraph 1 refer to?A. lockB. hairC. letterD. manuscript27.We can infer from the passage that________.A. Miss Cassandra Austen made an attempt to maintain a good name for Austen.B. Austen's work brought her sister much personal fame and many positive reviews..C. A Janeite fan culture came into being during Austen's lifetime.D. Austen's sister burned every letter and achieved her purpose.CMovie ExtrasWould you mind lying in a coffin (棺材)? Would you shave your head? Are you willing to take out your false teeth? These are just a few of the questions Anne Marie Stewart and her staff sometimes ask the "talent" who serve as non-speaking "extras" in special films, television series, and made-for-TV movies produced in Toronto.Of course, the majority of extra calls are for more ordinary people, and Stewart has a list of about 650 registered extras. Crowd scenes, which are common, call for everyday people of all ages, ethnic backgrounds, and sizes.Over at Movie People, last-minute requests are not unusual. "We got a request once for an entire brass band of 30 people. They wanted it within the hour," said manager Yvonne McCartney. Another time, the company got a last-minute request for a newborn baby. "We found a baby that was three weeks premature," said Jonathan Aiken, an owner of the company. Then there was the worried call from a casting director whose "Star" got doggone stubborn one day and decided to just lie down and not work. The director needed a replacement dog, fast. "We got them two in one hour." said Aiken. "It was a matter of good connections and fast phone work." The eight phone lines needed to make 350 to 400 calls a day are one of Movie People's major expenses.Phone lines are the only way to stay in touch with casting directors and extras; but the latter are a group not necessarily interested in a long-term relationship. Most extra jobs pay only $7 an hour (with a six-hour minimum), while most agencies charge an annual $75 registration fee and get 10 to 15 per cent of extras’ earnings. It's no wonder that the turnover rate is fairly high. Some people who are between jobs do extra work as a temporary measure, said McCartney. But professionals, such as lawyers, also do the work because it's interesting. Others with flexible jobs have a desire to do something different. Some homemakers want to get out of the house and onto a movie set. Money's not the motivating reason."One of the first t hings I say to people who walk in and ask about being an extra is, ‘You have to be available,' "said a person at Karen Clifton Agency. Inc. "The next thing I say is, 'You can't make a living at this.' ”28. What kind of people are movie extras?A. TV series makers.B. Casting directors.C. Non-professional movie actors.D. Agents for movie stars.29. According to the passage, movie extras should _____.A. have special talentsB. have a flexible scheduleC. make good connectionsD. make hundreds of phone calls daily30. Why do white collar workers most probably like to be movie extras?A. They want to make more money.B. They want to start a career in acting.C. They think their regular job is boring.D. They think being on the stage is enjoyable.31. The underlined word “turnover” in the sixth paragraph probably means _____.A. business profitB. the loss of staffC. market demandD. operation expensesDThe government of Norway is planning to build an unusual storage center on an island in the Arctic Ocean. The place would be large enough to hold about two million seeds. The goal is to represent all crops known to scientists. The British magazine New Scientist published details of the plan last month. The structure will be designed to protect the world’s food supply against nuclear war, climate change and other possible threats. It will be built in a mountain on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen. The mountain is less than one thousand kilometers from the North Pole, the northernmost position on Earth. An international group called the Global Crop Diversity Trust is working on the project. The director of the group, Cary Fowler, spoke to New Scientist. He said the project would let theworld rebuild agriculture if in his words “the worst came to the worst”. Norway is expected to start work next year. The project is expected to cost three million dollars. Workers will drill deep in the side of a sandstone mountain. Temperatures in the area never rise above zero degrees centigrade. The seeds will be protected behind concrete walls a meter thick and high-security doors. The magazine report says the collection will represent the products of ten thousand years of farming. Most of the seeds at first will come from collections at seed banks in Africa, Asia and Latin America. To last a long time, seeds need to be kept in very low temperatures. Workers will not be present all the time. But they plan to replace the air inside the storage space each winter. Winter temperatures on the island are about eighteen degrees below zero centigrade. The cold weather would protect the seeds even if the air could not be replaced.Mr. Fowler says the proposed structure wi ll be the world’s most secure gene bank. He says the plant seeds would only be used when all other seeds are gone for some reason. Norway first proposed the idea in the 1980s. But security concerns delayed the plan. At that time, the Soviet Union was permitted use of Spitsbergen. New Scientist says the plan won United Nations approval in October at a meeting in Rome of the Food and Agriculture Organization.32. The project is meant to_____.A. increase the world’s food production in the futureB. carry out some scientific experiments on plant genesC. protect crop seeds from dying out in case of possible disastersD. build an exhibition centre of the world’s plant seeds33. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the above passage?A. The government of Norway will perform the project alone.B. Seeds to be collected there were produced ten thousand years ago.C. Spitsbergen is chosen because it is away from the threat of nuclear war forever.D. Temperature is a major consideration when choosing the storage place.34. We can infer from the text that_____.A. People will get newly-developed seeds from the center every yearB. The storage center will greatly promote the development of world agricultureC. Norway meant to have built the storage centre more than 30 years agoD. There haven’t been any seed storage centers in the world before35. What is probably the best title of the passage?A. Noah’s Ark of Plant Seeds in PlanB. The Best Place to Store SeedsC. Concerns of World Food SupplyD. A New Way to Feed the World第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
