The Chinese New Year is called the Spring Festival which is the biggest festival in China. It’s on the first day of the first lunar month. Each Chinese year has a name. We may call it the Year of Tiger, the Year of pig or the Year of Snake. And the Year of 2014 is called the Year of Horse.

People always spend a month preparing for the Spring Festival. They often buy lots of things, such as chicken, fish and new clothes. They are busy cleaning their houses. They think cleaning sweeps away bad luck. It makes the house ready for good luck. The color red is everywhere during the Spring Festival. People think red is a happy color and will bring them a bright future. They decorate their houses with pieces of red paper. The Chinese character “fu”upside down. That means “fu comes”.

On the eve of the Spring Festival, family members get together and have big meals. Their favorite food, of course, is dumplings. On that night, all the families stay up late to welcome the New Year, watching CCTV programs or playing cards. On the first day of the Chinese New Year, people put on their new clothes and go to visit their relatives and friends, saying “Happy New Year”, “Good luck” and other greetings to each other. On that day, kids are the happiest in the world. Because they get a lot of “hong bao” from their parents and elder relatives. Usually, older people give younger ones “hong bao”. They think that is brings good luck.

The Spring Festival comes to an end when the Lantern Festival is finished.
