The first part: The plot
The plot of this novel
This novel tells us a story :
Jim and Della, though they are living in the lower classes, they never lost their
Jim: Jim the name is first appeared as the whole name James Dillingham Young. The description of contracting his middle name shows that they lived a better life before but live a poor life now. Though the whole story is based on Jim’s watch, he is appeared at the end of the story. But the character soon catches my eye with several actions, “his eyes were fixed upon Della”, “he simply stared at her fixedly”, the series of “nor” and so on. These actions indicate that he loves his wife so much that he even sells out his heirloom. i think that the most impressive plot of the story is the appearance of Jim and his actions.
Della: Be willing to bear the poverty and good at handling daily life. She is thin but dexterous and slender, her hair is specially beautiful, the novel describe it emphatically: “Had the queen of Sheba lived in the flat across the airshaft, Della would have let her hair hang out the window some day to dry just to depreciate Her Majesty's jewels and gifts. ”She is the embodiment of beauty, she is pretty, and her kindness is particularly valuable。She loves her husband deeply, she can throw away all she has for love.

• Then,Jim threw his present upon the table. It is a set of combs that Della had worshipped long .Della was very happy and told him that she cut her hair to buy him a fob chain. Jim smiled and told her that he has sold his watch to get the money to buy Della combs.

• Della only has one dollar and eighty-seven cents. she knew it was not enough to buy any good gift. she has no idea , so she decided to cut down her beautiful brown hair and sold it, exchanged for 20 dollars. She used 21 dollars to buy a platinum fob chain(白金表链）for Jim.

Who is Magi: Magi refers to three oracles who bring gifts when Jesus was born. There is another opinion that Magi refers to three kings from the west : Melchior , who brings gold; Gaspar , who brings frankincense; Barrsaze , who brings poison. The magi were wise men--wonderfully wise men-who brought gifts to the Babe in the manger. They invented the art of giving Christmas presents. Being wise, their gifts werHale Waihona Puke Baidu no doubt wise ones, possibly bearing the privilege of exchange in case of duplication.
