WEEKLY ADDRESS: Remembering September 11th WASHINGTON — In this week’s address, President Obama marked the ten th anniversary of the September 11th attacks and paid tribute to the firs t responders, those serving our nation in the military, and those who lost their lives on that tragic day. In the difficult decade since 9/11, our n ation has stayed strong in the face of threat, and we have strengthened our homeland security, enhanced our partnerships, and put al Qaeda on the path to defeat. As we look to the future, we will continue to prov e that the terrorists who attacked us are no match for the courage, resili ence, and endurance of the American people.
This weekend, we’re coming together, as one nation, to mark the 10th a nniversary of the September 11th attacks. We’r e remembe ring the lives we lost — nearly 3,000 innocent men, women and children. We’re reaffir ming our commitment to always keep faith with their families.
We’re honoring the heroism of first responders who risked their lives — an
d gav
e their lives—to save others. And we’re giving thanks to all who s
erve on our behalf, especially our troops and military families— our extrao rdinary 9/11 Generation.
At the same time, even as we reflect on a difficult decade, we must loo k forward, to the future we will build together. That includes staying str ong and confident in the face of any threat. And thanks to the tireless efforts of our military personnel and our intelligence, law enforcement an d homeland security professionals — there should be no doubt. Today, A merica is stronger and al Qaeda is on the path to defeat.
We’ve taken the fight to al Qaeda like never before. Over the past tw o and a half years, more senior al Qaeda leaders have been eliminated t han at any time since 9/11. And thanks to the remarkable courage and precision of our forces, we finally delivered justice to Osama bin Laden. We’ve strengthened the partnerships and tools we need to prevail in this war against al Qaeda — working closer with allies and partners; reforming
intelligence to better detect and disrupt plots; investing in our Special F orces so terrorists have no safe haven.
We’re constantly working to improve the security of our homeland as wel l — at our airports, ports and borders; enhancing aviation security and scr eening; increasing support for our first responders; and working closer th an ever with states, cities and communities.
A decade after 9/11, it’s clear for all the world to see— the terrorists wh o attacked us that September morning are no match for the character of our people, the resilience of our nation, or the endurance of our values. They wanted to terrorize us, but, as Americans, we refuse to live in fear. Yes we face a determined foe, and make no mistake— they will keep tr ying to hit us again. But as we are showing again this weekend, we re main vigilant. We’re doing everything in our power to protect our peopl e. And no matter what comes our way, as a resilient nation, we will ca rry on.
They wanted to draw us in to endless wars, sapping our strength and co nfidence as a nation. But even as we put relentless pressure on al Qae
da, we’re end ing the war in Iraq and beginning to bring our troops hom
e from Afghanistan. Because after a hard decade o
f war, it is time for nation buildin
g here at home.
They wanted to deprive us of the unity that defines us as a people. Bu t we will not succumb to division or suspicion. We are Americans, and w e are stronger and safer
when we stay true to the values, freedoms and diversity that make us unique among nations.
And they wanted to un dermine our place in the world. But a decade l ater, we’ve shown that America doesn’t hunker down and hide behind w alls of mistrust. We’ve forged new partnerships with nations around the world to meet the global challenges that no nation can face alone. A nd across the Middle East and North Africa a new generation of citizens
is showing that the future belongs to those that want to build, not destr oy.
Ten years ago, ordinary Americans showed us the true meaning of coura ge when they rushed up those stairwells, into those flames, into that coc kpit. In the decade since, a new generation has stepped forward to ser ve and keep us safe. In their memory, in their name, we will never w aver. We will protect the country we love and pass it safer, stronger an d more prosperous to the next generation.

On this Memorial Day, as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes, our sense of patriotism is particularly strong. I am the father of two young girls, and I cannot imagine what it is to lose a child. My heart breaks for the families who've lost a loved one. These are things I cannot know. But there are also some things I do know. I know that our sadness today is mixed with pride; that those we've lost will be remembered by a grateful nation; and that our presence here today is only possible because your loved ones, America's patriots, were willing to give their lives to defend our nation. I know that while we may come from different places, cherish different traditions, and have different political beliefs, we all –every one of us – hold in reverence those who've given this country the full measure of their devotion. And I know that children in New Mexico and across this country look to your children, to your brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, and friends –to those we honor today –as a shining example of what's best about America. Their lives are a model for us all. What led these men and women to wear their country's uniform? What is it that leads anyone to put aside their own pursuit of life's comforts; to subordinate their own sense of survival, for something bigger – something greater? Many of those we honor today were so young when they were killed. They had a whole life ahead of them – birthdays and weddings, holidays with children and grandchildren, homes and jobs and happiness of their own. And yet, at one moment or another, they felt the tug, just as generations of Americans did before them. Maybe it was a massacre in a Boston square; or a President's call to save the Union and free the slaves. Maybe it was the day of infamy that awakened a nation to a storm in the Pacific and a madman's death march across Europe. Or maybe it was the morning they woke up to see our walls of security crumble along with our two largest towers. Whatever the moment was, when it came and they felt that tug, perhaps it was simply the thought of a mom or a dad, a husband or a wife, or a child not yet born that made this young American think that it was time to go; that made them think "I must serve so that the people I love can live –in happiness, and safety, and freedom."

More specifically, I talked about a pizza chain in Minneapolis –Punch Pizza –whose owner, John Soranno, made the business decision to give his employees a raise to ten bucks an hour. A couple weeks ago, I got a letter from a small business owner who watched that night. Yasmin Ibrahim is an immigrant who owns her own restaurant –Desi Shack –and plans to open another this summer. Here’s what she wrote. “I was moved by John Soranno’s story. It got me thinking about my full-time employees and their ability to survive on $8 an hour in New York City.”So a few weeks ago, Yasmin put in place a plan to lift wages for her employees at both her restaurants to at least $10 an hour by the end of this year. But here’s the thing –Yasmin isn’t just raising her employees’wages because it’s the right thing to do. She’s doing it for the same reason John Soranno did. It makes good business sense. Yasmin wrote, “It will allow us to attract and retain better talent –improving customer experience, reducing employee churn and training costs. We believe doing so makes good business sense while at the same time having a positive impact on the community.” Yasmin's right. That’s why, two months ago, I issued an Executive Order requiring workers on new federal contracts to be paid a fair wage of at least ten dollars and ten cents an hour. But in order to make a difference for every American, Congress needs to do something. And America knows it. Right now, there’s a bill that would boost America’s minimum wage to ten dollars and ten cents an hour. That would lift wages for nearly 28 million Americans across the country. 28 million. And we’re not just talking about young people on their first job. The average minimum wage worker is 35 years old. They work hard, often in physically demanding jobs. And while not all of us always see eye to eye politically, one thing we overwhelmingly agree on is that nobody who works full-time should ever have to live in poverty. That’s why nearly three in four Americans support raising the minimum wage. The problem is, Republicans in Congress don’t support raising the minimum wage. Some even want to get rid of it entirely. In Oklahoma, for example, the Republican governor just signed a law prohibiting cities from establishing their own minimum wage. That’s why this fight is so important. That’s why people like John and Yasmin are giving their workers a raise. That’s why several states, counties, and cities are going around Congress to raise their workers’wages. That’s why I’ll keep up this fight. Because we know that our economy works best when it works for all of us –not just a fortunate few. We believe we do better when everyone who works hard has a chance to get ahead. That’s what opportunity is all about. And if you agree with us, we could use your help. Republicans have voted more than 50 times to undermine or repeal health care for millions of Americans. They should vote at least once to raise the minimum wage for millions of working families. If a Republican in Congress represents you, tell him or her it’s time to give the politics a rest for a while and do something to help working Americans. It’s time for “ten-ten.”It’s time to give America a raise. Thanks, and have a great weekend.
