Bulgarian Evgenia Radanova, world record holder and 2002 silver medalist, had to settle for a silver again with a time of 44.374 seconds. Canada's Anouk Leblang-Boucher got the bronze in 44.759 with Chinese Fu Tianyu disqualified for cross tracking. The 20-year-old Wang, who has won four World Cup races over 500m, proved herself as the most consistent short tracker in the world. Her victory helped ease China's pain of losing an expected gold in the women's 500m long-track speed skating when World Cup leader Wang Manli came second to Russia's Svetlana Zhurova on Tuesday. Like China's Athens Olympic champion Liu Xiang, Wang jumped onto the podium and waved excitedly to the cheering crowd. "Until I jumped onto the podium did I know my name had not yet been announced," Wang said, laughing. "I was just so excited and anxious to get onto the podium."South Koreans Kang Yun-Mi and Jin Sun-Yu, tipped as biggest threats to Chinese skaters before the competition, were edged out in the semifinals.41. A friend sends you a favorite song to cheer you up. One day, a record company might forward new records and music videos to your phone. The mobile business is getting into the music business. For the moment, the interest is in pleasant ring tones, but some companies are hoping to take full advantage of the next generation of mobile phones---all –purpose gadgets that blend phone, personal stereo, video player and Internet browser into one. Finally, record companies might send new records and videos to fans who register their cell phone numbers. The fans could pass music or songs along to friends--- a kind of musical trading card. Unlike Internet tracks, mobile phone downloads would be easy for record companies to control, said former record industry official Ralph Simon, who is now chairman of your mobile, based in Santa Monic, California. “If you pass a song along to other phones through a network, each phone can be charged,” said Simon. “It's like going through a toll (收费)gate. There's more possibility for copyright control than there is on the Internet.”Massachusetts-based converse is offering a service in Portugal and the Netherlands that let people record tunes on their voice mail or send music as presents to friends. Finally, people might be able to sing karaoke and pass them along. The company is sure that people will want to use music to reach out and touch someone.“A mobile phone is not a listening machine, and you'll be disappointed if you think you can change it into a radio,”said Ohad Ouziel, a creative manager for Converse in Israel. “But if someone sends you a song while you are on vacation, you appreciate the feeling.”48. What happened to the flight's 239 passengers and crew after the plane left Kuala Lumpur on Saturday? It is becoming an increasingly desperate question as the days pass. But it's hardly the first mystery of its kind. Here are some half-solved and unsolved airline mysteries that kept investigators clueless for years.Air France Flight 447: An Airbus A330 flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris plunged into the Atlantic Ocean in 2009, killing all 228 passengers and crew on board. But it took a full five days for search and rescue teams to find the wreckage(残骸) and another three years for investigators to report that ice crystals had caused the autopilot to disconnect. The bodies of 74 passengers remain unrecovered.Amelia Earhart: Ace(王牌) pilot Amelia Earhart disappeared in her twin-engine monoplane Electra over the Pacific Ocean in 1937 in an attempt to circumnavigate the globe. Back in the 17th century, forest blanketed the land. Today, roads and towns cover much of the area. But the past is not dead and gone. Just an hour's drive from Boston lies Plymouth Plantation. There you'll experience the 17th century life from the days of the Pilgrims(清教徒移民). You can look in the Pilgrims' homes, watch the way they cook, and ask them about their daily life. You can even help them build houses or work in the fields. When you arrive at Plymouth, you are greeted with "How do you fare?" instead of "How are you?" In this living history plantation, actors portray(展现) real people of 17th century in Plymouth. Each actor has taken the identity of someone from that period. All the actors speak the language of Shakespeare. They're happy to talk about the hardships of their lives or just share the gossip of the day. But don't try to discuss modern topics. They won't understand what you are talking about! In fall, you can enjoy a harvest dinner very similar to the First Thanksgiving. You'll dine with your hands like Pilgrims. You'll find no pepper(胡椒粉) on the table. This expensive spice was used very sparingly(节俭地) in cooking. You'll find no last-course "dessert", either. At the time, people ate sweet dishes right along with the meal.Cranberries were on the menu then and still are today. A short distance from Plymouth, you can visit Cranberry World. At this unique museum, you'll see how cranberries are harvested and can taste different cranberry products.Of course, the First Thanksgiving included not only the Pilgrims, but also their Wampanoag guests. If you want to find out something about the Wampanoag, explore the recreated Wampanoag Homesite. It is just a short walk from Plymouth. Step into the Native American home and enter a different world. Native Americansdressed in 17th century Wampanoag outfits(全套服装) describe how their people lived 400 years ago. Life in the 17th CenturyCThe general Allotment Act, passed in 1887 by the United States Congress, was expected to help Native Americans. The Act called for breaking up tribal reservations(部落居留地) and turning them into family-sized farms. Each farm would be given to an individual Native American. The government thought that Native Americans would be better off if they forgot their tribal organizations and their tribal languages. The government expected Native Americans who owned land and farmed for a living to become more like other Americans. But it didn't work out that way. The Native Americans were used to living in tribal groups and sharing with each other. They had always thought of land as something that belonged to the whole tribe, rather than to individuals. With their families scattered on separate farms, many Native Americans were dissatisfied. The land they were given was often poor, and they hadn't the skill to farm it well. Poverty and poor health increased, while the Native American stuck to their old languages and customs. Eventually the government realized that the division of reservation land had made things worse rather than better for Native Americans. The Indian Reorganization Act, passed in 1943, reversed the government's policy. This Act said that all Native American land should be owned by tribes, rather than by individuals. The new Act encouraged tribalorganizations to take responsibility for running tribal affairs. The Act also provided money, which tribes could borrow to buy more land or to start business.Economic conditions have improved for Native Americans. Many tribes run successful manufacturing, mineral leasing, hotels and gambling business. Yet problems of unemployment and poor health still exist. Today Native Americans face a double challenge. They must continue to improve their economic and political position, while at the same time preserving their lands and cultural heritage.43. Why did the government want Native Americans to own land and farm for a living?A. It thought this would make Native Americans more like other Americans.B. It wanted to see if individual Native Americans would drop out of school.C. It wanted to see whether matters could become worse on the reservation.D. When you do, "learning bursts right open," says Evelyn Vuko, a longtime teacher who writes an education column called “Teacher Says” for the Washington Post Newspaper. In fact, kids who get along with their teachers not only learn more, but they're more comfortable asking questions and getting extra help. This makes it easier to understand new material and do your best on tests. When you have this kind of relationship with a teacher, he or she can be someone to turn to with problems , such as problems with learning or school issues, such as bullying(欺负人).As a kid in a primary or middle school, you're at a wonderful stage in your life. You're like a sponge(海绵), able to soak up lots of new and exciting information. On top of that, you're able to think about all this information in new ways. Your teacher knows that, and in most cases, is very excited to be the person who's giving you all that material and helping you put it together. Remember, teachers are people, too, and they feel great if you're open to what they're teaching you. That's why they wanted to be teachers in the first place—to teach! Some kids may be able to learn in any situation, whether they like the teacher or not. But most kids are sensitive(敏感的) to the way they get along with the teacher, and if things aren't going well, they won't learn as well and won't enjoy being in class.47. In the passage, the author mainly talks about .A. how to get along well with teachersB. the importance of a good relation with teachersC. how much the students are expected of to get along with teachersD. how to make the time in the classroom more pleasant48. "learning bursts right open" in the third paragraph really means .A. learning becomes easier for you at onceB. you find an opening to learningC. there'll be more problems with learningD. there'll be no problems with learning49. According to the passage, which of the following offers the best reasoning?A. You are getting on well with your teachers, so you have more questions than others.B. You find it comfortable to ask questions, so you can build a good relationship with teachers.C. You have a good relationship with your teacher, so you can turn to him/her when in trouble.D. You are in trouble, so you can build a good relationship with teachers.50. Which of the comments in FALSE on teachers and their work according to the passage?A. Teachers are excited even if you wouldn't like to accept their teaching.B. Teachers sometimes have the same feelings as students do.C. Though few, there are still some students who can learn even if they don't like the teacher.D. Having a bad relationship with your teachers does more or less harm to your studies.四、短文7选5(5选5等)(共5小题;共10分)A Brief History of SlaveryIt is said that the first known slaves lived more than five thousand years ago in the Sumerian society of what is now Iraq. 51. It expanded as trade and industry increased. This increase created a demand for the labor force to produce goods for export. Slaves did most of the work. Most ancient people thought of slavery as a natural condition that could happen to anyone at any time.52. Sugar was one of these things. Italians set up large sugar farms around the twelfth century. They used slaves from Russia and other parts of Europe to do the work. By the year of thirteen hundred, African blacks had begun to replace the Russian slaves. They were bought or caught from North African Arabs, who used them as slaves for years.By the 1500s, Spain and Portugal got American colonies(殖民地). The Europeans forced native Indians to work in large farms and mines in the colonies. 53. So the Spanish and the Portuguese began to bring in people from West Africa as slaves. France, Britain and the Netherlands did the same in their American colonies.54. That was not true in the early years of the American nation. Many Americans thought slavery was necessary. Yet owning slaves was common among rich people in the early 1700s.55. One example is the famous American diplomat (外交家), inventor and businessman Benjamin Franklin. He owned slaves for thirty years and sold them at his general store. But his ideas about slavery changed during his long life. Benjamin Franklin started the first schools to teach blacks and later argued for their freedom.A. Today, most people in the world see slavery as unfair.B. Most of the Indians died from European diseases and poor treatment.C. People who were rich enough to own many slaves became leaders in their local areas.D. In later times, slaves provided the labor needed to produce products that were in demand.E. Many of the leaders in the colonies who fought for American independence owned slaves.F. Most people enjoy hearing a well-told story. But what makes a story well-told? And what makes people want to share it?Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania recently 1 up those two questions head-on. They found that a story is more 2 to be shared if it includes the right mix of emotions and a clear, but not too obvious 3 point.Over a fire-week period, the researchers examined 7,000 news stories. They found that 80% of them were shared by 4 . The researchers then focused on the “most-emailed” stories and 5 came up with 1,300 characteristics that these articles had in common. After narrowing the list down to 400, the researchers 6 characteristics such as amusement, excitement, surprise, 7 , and disbelief. To measure “emotion,” the researchers built a dictionary of “power words” 8 each emotion, and then counted how often each word appeared in the stories. The researchers also found that 9 stories were more likely to be shared. Stories that stoke our intellectual curiosity, such as those that 10 new technology or like the 11 of a hard math problem, were also more 12 to be shared. On the other hand, the researchers found that stories that evoked a sense of sadness were 13 shared. “There’s a whole other body of research on howwe 14 to feel sad when we’re sharing these stories,” explained Jonah Berger, one of the researchers. “We share sad stories when they could help others.”Finally, the researchers found that we are 15 likely to share stuff we find 16 themselves. The researchers then moved on to the second question: What makes a story more word-of-mouth worthy? According to Berger, the key is to make the 17 point of the story feel like our own idea. “We feel smart and 18 when we can come up with an idea on our own,” he says. “When we share a story, we’re not just 19 someone else’s point of view. We’re sharing our own.” Giving people the tools to present your 20 in their language makes it easier for them to share your idea.1. A. brought B. took C. made D. put2. AMichelle was a student at University of California, Los Angeles. She is here to tell us how she feels about the city. What were the best things about Los Angeles? One of my favorite things about Los Angeles is the weather. I hate the cold and it never really gets that cold there. Plus, most of the time it’s usually sunny, which is good because I love going to the beach during the summer. There’s so much to do at the beach, but my favorite thingin L.A. was having a picnic on the sand with my friends. What were the worst things about being there?I disliked having to drive everywhere to get around because the city is so spread out. Los Angeles has a lot of traffic and sometimes it takes a long time to get somewhere close by just because the streets are so crowded. Also, a lot of people complain about the pollution.Did you have any problems there?Just the normal problems of living in any city, like watching out for pickpockets (扒手). Some people think Los Angeles has a lot of crime, but I think it’s as safe as any other city. Also, many people think driving is difficult because there is a lot of traffic and road rage (路怒症), but it just takes a little practice and a lot of patience. What are the people like in Los Angeles? There are all types of people in Los Angeles since the city is pretty diverse. For the most part, though, most of the people are friendly, calm and relaxed. Some people say that everyone in Los Angeles is beautiful, but I think that’s just a stereotype (模式化的印象).Would you go back to Los Angeles?Certainly. Los Angeles is one of my favorite cities in the world. I love the fact that it has all the nightlife and shopping of a big city, but also has access to beaches, parks, mountains and other places you can’t usually find in large cities. Between the weather and the beaches and all the fun things to do, it’s a great place to be.21. We can learn from the text that Michelle _____.A. hates the heavy traffic in Los AngelesB. dislikes the cold weather in Los AngelesC. thinks Los Angeles is small and crowdedD. enjoys driving everywhere in Los Angeles22. What’s Michelle’s impression of the people in Los Angel es?A. They get angry easily.B. All sorts of people live there.C. They are patient and amusing.D. Everyone is kind and beautiful.23. How does Michelle find Los Angeles?A. Safe but noisy.B. Relaxing but busy.C. Polluted and dangerous.D. Diverse and interesting.24. We learn from the text that _____.A. Michelle was born in Los AngelesB. Michelle loved the life in Los AngelesC. Los Angeles has many traffic accidentsD. Michelle has no plan to return to Los AngelesBThis month, my 7-year-old daughter invited her friend to sleep over. Her mom, who had told me before she did not allow sleepovers, explained that she did not think the kids were ready for a sleepover until the age of 10. I then started to wonder whether there actually was a “right” age for a sleepover.I remember the first real sleepover I ever had. It happened when I was about 13 and a friend of mine invited me to sleep at her house. Luckily for me, her parents were not strangers.I think I cried for 2 months straight before being allowed my first sleepover. My parents were not completely heartless, though. I was actually sick at the time and had to take medication and they were very concerned about that, but I still did not like them saying “no”.I remember my excitement the day before I finally got my sleepover. I could not sleep that night from the excitement. When I got there , my friend’s house looked so beautiful and her parents were so nice and welcoming.Unfortunately though, the number of sleepovers I had throughout my childhood can be counted on two hands. And after every one of them, I realized exactly how much I was missing. It was only as an adult, when I was studying education, that I actually learned about the importance of sleepovers in kids’ development no matter how old they are.A sleepover is one of those things every child needs experience on their own. It can do them a lot of good.25. The friend of the author’s daughter ______.A. is too sick to sleep overB. is less than ten years oldC. never listens to her motherD. has grown tired of sleepover26. How was the author’s first sleepover?A. It was really boring.B. She can’t remember it.C. It was a painful experienceD. She thinks it was enjoyable.27. The author writes the text mainly to _____.A. explain what kids’ development isB. discuss how strict parents should beC. encourage children to have sleepoversD. ask parents to keep an eye on their childrenCAmerica used to have a strong college education system for prison inmates (prisoners). It was seen as a way to rehabilitate men and women in prison by helping them go straight when they got out. Those taxpayer-supported college classes were put to an end in the 1990s. But New York Governor Andrew Cuomo would like to bring them back in the state, setting off a fierce new debate.A number of lawmakers in New York have promised to kill Cuomo’s proposal (提议).Cuomo says reintroducing taxpayer-funded college classes in New York’s prisons is a common-sense plan that will reduce the number of inmates who commit new crimes.“You pay $ 60,000 for a prison cell for a year,” Cuomo responded. “You put a guy away for 10 years, and that’s $600,000. Right now, chances are almost half. Once he’s set free, he’s going to come right back.”Cuomo says helping inmates get a college education would cost about $ 5,000 a year per person. He argues, “It’s a small amount of money if it keeps that inmate from bouncing back into prison.”But even some members of the governor’s own party hate this idea. State Assemblywoman Addie Russell, whose upstate district includes three state prisons, says taxpayers just won’t stand for inmates getting a free college education, while middle-class families struggle to pay for their kids’ college fees.“That is the vast majority of feedback (反馈) that I’m also getting from my constituents (选民),”she says. “You know, ‘Where is the relief for the rest of the population who obey the law ?’”“I was very disappointed that the policy had been changed,” says Gerald Gaes, who served as an expert on college programs for the Federal Bureau of Prisons in the 1990s. In 1994, President Clinton stopped federal student aid programs for inmates.Gaes says research shows that college classes actually save taxpayers’ money over time, by reducing the number of inmates who break the law and wind up back in those expensive prison cells.“It is cost-effective,” he says. “Designing prisons that way will have a long-term benefit for New York State.”28.The underlined word “rehabilitate” probably means “”.A.let people know more about prisoners. B.will benefit citizens obeying laws.C.will be useless for improving prisons. D.is based on most taxpayers’ feedback.DAlexis was hot and tired. With rage in her voice she shouted, "Pull me up!I give up, I hate this. This is stupid!" It was at that moment when Jason, the adviser on the trip, looked at me and said, "Ed, I'm going to go down and talk with her." I then shouted down to Alexis, "Hold on! You can do this. We know you can!"Jason grasped another rope, put his climbing harness(系带)on and began to move down the cliff. Within moments Jason was beside Alexis. She had her cheek directly against the face of the rock with her feet barely resting on a small piece of the cliff that stuck outward. Jason said to Alexis, "I know that you have been on this cliff now for what seems like a long time. Your feet and fingers are cramping(痉挛)up and your forearms feel as though they are on fire. But , Alexis, you are strong, look how far up you are already. You have taken one of the more difficult paths up the cliff. Alexis, look at the path you have taken."At that moment, Alexis moved her cheek away from the rock face and looked down. The bright white chalk she used in her hands to give her a better hold, showed the path where her tired hands had moved her upward on the cliff. Jason was right. Alexis had taken the hardest way up the cliff. Jason then looked straight into Alexis' eyes and in a calm voice he said, "You are not alone out here, there are people who care about you, who want to help you and see you succeed. We are going to do this together. Are you ready?" Slowly she nodded her head and took a deep breath.32. Jason went down the cliff because _________.A. Alexis took a wrong pathB.
