Part ⅡReading Comprehension(Skimming and Scanning)(15 minutes)Directions:In this part, you will have 15 minutes to go over the passage quickly and answer the questions on Answer Sheet 1.For questions 1-7, choose the best answer from the four choices marked A), B), C) and D). For questions 8-10, complete the sentences with the information given in the passage.Consumer Recycling and Waste Reduction TipsThe following information provides simple tips on how to recycle and reduce waste as a consumer. Grocery StoresMany supermarkets sponsor redemption centers(回收中心)that will buy back California Redemption Value(CRV) containers for recycling and may accept other materials like steel cans, glass jars and newspapers. Some stores have reverse vending machines, which give you money back as CRV containers are fed into them. Many grocery stores in the San Diego area also have a place to recycle used plastic grocery bags and film containers (plastic canisters that package the film):Albertsons (also take newspaper wrappers, dry cleaning bags, or any type of LDPE plastic bag) ·Ralphs·Vons·Wal Mart·Whole Foods MarketAs for the question “Paper or plastic?” why not bring your own reusable cloth shopping bags instead. The cloth bags hold a lot more, so there are fewer trips back and forth from the car and the cloth carrying handles are more comfortable on your hands than paper or plastic handles. Some stores even give a small discount when you bring reusable cloth bags or reuse old shopping bags to carry out your new purchases.Tip: If you bring your own canvas, plastic, or paper bags, be sure to ask the store to credit your bill. Many stores take 5 cents off each bag provided by the customer, even if the store does not recycle plastic bags. And if you buy just one or two items, try going without a bag altogether. The store pays for its bags, which means so do you, and in the end, so does the environment.Dry CleanersMany dry cleaners take back their plastic clothes bags. When you get home and hang up yourclothes, keep the plastic covers and recycle them on your next trip to the dry cleaners—rather than throw them away. Some stores will also reuse clean hangers.Reusing by DonatingThere are many items that even the most active recycler may throw away because they are uncommon recyclables. Some of these items include mattresses, furniture, clothing, appliances, electronics or art materials. They can often be donated to local thrift stores and nonprofit groups to be repaired and reused. Visit , San Diego s resource for thrift stores, second hand, rummage sales, recycling, retro, and more. Plus a calendar of events.Source Reduction—Make It Recyclable and ReusableWhile shopping, you can help the environment by selecting products that use less packaging and are reusable or readily recyclable in your community. When buying a product, stop and think, “Can this item be recycled or reused?” If not, is there an alternati ve brand or product that you can buy? By making these choices, you are using your purchasing power to reward manufacturers that make recyclable and reusable products, not products that are only disposable.Try These Reusable Alternatives:·Use a sponge instead of throwaway wipes·Buy rechargeable batteries·Buy cloth napkins that you can wash instead of paper you throw away·Buy washable plates and cups for picnics instead of disposables·Buy razors with replaceable blades·Seek out reusable or refillable containers that hold shampoo, soap, etc.·Use plastic containers with lids instead of aluminum foil, plastic bags or plastic wrap·Rinse plastic bags and reuse them Buy Products Made of Recycled MaterialsA phone directory featuring local recycled products is available by calling Environmental Services at(858)694 7000. No recycling program is truly successful unless recyclables collected are transformed into marketable products and then purchased by you! To create a demand for recycled products, make sure to purchase products that contain recycled materials. Ask store managers to stock products made with recycled materials and write to the manufacturers of the products you buy and tell them you prefer that they use recycled materials. When shopping, buy those items that say, “made from recycled materials”and have the highest percentage of post consumer recycled content. (Post consumer content means any material that the public has already used or recycled.) California law requires that any consumer goods labeled “Recycled”must contain at least 10% post consumer content. And beware, claims such as “environmentally friendly”, “eco safe”, “safe for the environment”or “natural”do not necessarily mean that the product can be recycled or contains recycled material! Thanks to today s technology and manufacturing, these products are as high a quality as(if not higher than) products that don t contain recycled materials, and they look just as nice. Look for these items for your home or business in your community:·Clothing and shoes·Children s toys and playground equipment·Garden tools·Carpet pads·Plastic lumber for planters, decks and benches·Motor oil·Floors and countertops·Rain gutters·Packaging materials·Paper products like tissue and towels·Cleaning supplies·Writing or computer paper and envelopesYour choices and efforts can make a significant difference in the success of San Diego and our nation s recycling programs! Avoid Excess Packaging and Buy in Bulk(批量购买)While it s true that some packaging is necessary for health and shelf life considerations, all too many manufacturers over package their products. This excess packaging costs consumers more money, costs our environment more resources and energy, and costs our landfills valuable space. So take a little extra care before you buy. Look for an alternative product without packaging or the least amount of packaging and send a message that you don t like waste. Also, avoid single serving items that are overly wrapped. When it makes sense, buy in bulk, but only purchase the amount you will use within a reasonable time. You will avoid over packaging and save money, since larger quantities are generally discounted. Try these alternatives next time you shop:·Large box of cereal vs. individually wrapped snack pack of mini boxes of cereal·Pudding in a box vs. pudding in plastic cups which are then held together by a cardboard carton ·Fresh vegetables you buy by the pound vs. shrink wrapped vegetables in Styrofoam containers ·1 gallon water jugs vs. 6 pack of individual 12 ounce plastic bottles·Condensed can of soup vs. microwavable single portion soups注意:此部分试题在答题卡1上作答;8~10题在答题卡1上。

Unit TenBefore and After September 11Tai MosesNecessary Backgrund1. "Since 11 September last year, up to 2,000 people in the United States have been detained without trial, or charge, or even legal rights. The fate of most is unknown. Andrew Gumbel investigates a scandal that shames the land of the free."They came for Rabih Haddad in the afternoon, as his family was getting ready to celebrate the end of Ramadan. Three men from the Immigration and Naturalization took him away from the apartment in Ann Arbor, Michigan, that he shared with his wife and four children..."That was 14 December, more than two months ago. Since that time, Haddad, a widely respected religious leader and founding member of one of the United States' largest Muslim charities, the Global Relief Foundation, has been held in solitary confinement, first in Ann Arbor and then at a federal facility in Chicago. He is in his cell. Alone, for 23 hours a day. Every time he leaves, either to exercise in a special high-security cage or to take one of his thrice-weekly showers, he is handcuffed."And yet Haddad, a Lebanese citizen who was educated in the United States, has been charged with no crime. According to the Treasury Department- the only branch of government to give any explanation whatsoever--he and his charity are suspected of links to Osama bin Laden's al-Qa'ida organization. But no evidence has been publicly forthcoming to substantiate the claim and no formal accusation has been made against him."This is far from the first case of an Arab or south-Asian national being rounded up and subjected to indefinite detention in the wake of the 11 September attacks on New Y ork and Washington. The Justice Department acknowledged the arrest of 1,200 people before it stopped releasing numbers in November: human rights groups believe the total number Could be as high as 2,000. But Haddad's case is perhaps the most troubling of all because of the sheer severity of his treatment and the shockingly abrupt suspension of his rights to dual legal process. Government lawyers have refused to spell out what evidence, if any, they have against him, saying that they do not have to under the Bushadministration's stiff new anti- terrorism law passed in late October, the so-called Patriot Act. The US Attorney's office in Chicago refused all comment.2. "Tampa, Fla,--Sami A1-Arian leans back on a carved-wood Egyptian couch and squirms as he tries to explain why in 1991 he declared 'Death to Israel'"That comment and several others have come back to haunt him in the aftermath of Sept. 11. Officials at the University of South Florida, where Mr. A1-Arian is a tenured professor of computer science, has started proceedings to fire him--essentially for being a fiery Palestinian activist who embarrasses them."The result is a case that is less about Professor A1-Arian than it is about ourselves, what kind of university we desire, how much dissent we dare tolerate and how we treat minorities in times of national stress. "... the larger point is that a university, even a country, becomes sterile when people are too intimidated to say things out of the mainstream..."The university ... started a process to fire Mr. A1- Arian. The reason was not Mr. A1- Arian's comments themselves (they were about a dozen years old, after all) but the disruptive impact and security risks of having a polarizing figure on campus. Alumni contributions dropped, for example. "3. "... comedian Bill Mayer, the host of the LA-based ABC network chat show, had on September 17 as his guest the writer and political commentator Dinesh D'Sonza, who had taken issue with President Bush's frequent references to the terrorists as"cowards'. Mayer agreed, saying. "We have been cowards, lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away. That's cowardly. Staying in the airplane when it hits the building, say what you want about it, it's not cowardly. " The remarks caused Fed Ex and Sears, two of the advertisers on the show to pull their ads under pressure."Mayer has since apologized for offending people ... ""A campaign is under way to have him sacked and the show closed down... ""The ABC news anchor Peter Jennings, received more than 10,000 e-mails after making the following remarks on air. The country looks to the president on occasions like this to be reassuring to the nation. Some presidents do it well, some presidents don't."Rightwing talk show host Rush Limbaugh, alerted his listeners, suggesting that Jennings had questioned the President's character and the e-mails were launched. "4."Even comedians are not exempt from the patriotism monitors. Bill Mayer, the host of"Politically Incorrect", lived up to his late-night talk show's title two weeks ago by saying"We have been the cowards, lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away. " Last Wednesday (Sept. 26), Ari Fleischer, the White House spokesman, attacked Mr. Mayer and warned others, saying, "Americans ... need to watch what they say, watch what they do, and ... this is not a time for remarks like that; there never is. ~"5. "... Some in our nation's education establishment, those entrusted with teaching our children, have said and done some shocking things in the past few weeks. " A Chico State University professor claimed President Bush wants to 'kill innocent people', 'colonize' the Arab world, and capture 'oil for the Bush family'." The dean of the international affairs school at Columbia University (located in Manhattan, no less) even denied America is under attack: 'Students in my classes see this as an assault on international trade, globalization. '" University of Texas professor Robert Jensen said the attack 'was no more despicable than the massive acts of terrorism ... that the U. S. government has committed during my lifetime.“While these 'educators' are spreading twisted messages from the fantasy world they inhabit, The Heritage Foundation will continue to tell the truth to Congress, the media, and the Public. "6. "I don't know a single Arab or Muslim American who does not now feel that he or she belongs to the enemy camp, and that being in the United States at this moment provides us with an especially unpleasant experience of alienation and widespread, quite specifically targeted hostility..."... By passing the Patriot Act last November, Bush and his compliant Congress have suppressed or abrogated or abridged whole sections of the First, Fourth, Fifth and Eighth Amendments, instituted legal procedures that give individuals no recourse either to a prope defense or a fair trial, that allows secret searches, eavesdropping, detention without limit, and, given the treatment of the prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, that allow the US executive branch to abduct prisoners, detain them indefinitely, decide unilaterally whether or not they are prisoners of war and whether or not the Geneva Conventions apply to them--which is not a decision to be taken by individual countries..."The problem for the world today is how to deal with the unparalleled and unprecedented power of the United States, which in effect has made no secret of the fact that it does not need coordination with or approval of others in the pursuit of what a small circle of men and women around Bush believe are its interests..."From my point of view, the most shocking thing of all is that with few exceptions most prominent intellectual and commentators in this country have tolerated the Bush program, tolerated and in some flagrant cases, tried to go beyond it, toward more self-righteous sophistry, more uncritical self-flattery, more specious argument... "7. "A powerful group of neo-conservatives is launching a new public relations campaign in support of President George W. Bush's war on terrorism."At a Tuesday gathering of the National Press Club, members of the new Americans for Victory Over Terrorism (A VOT) declared their intention to 'take to task those groups and individuals who fundamentally misunderstand the nature of the war we are facing"Those groups and individuals, A VOT claims, need to be resisted both here and abroad. A full-page AVOT advertisement carried in the March 10 Sunday New Y ork Times pointed to radical Islam as 'an enemy no less dangerous and no less determined than the twin menaces of fascism and communism we faced in the 20th century. At the same time, the $128,000 ad lambasted those at home 'who are attempting to use this opportunity to promulgate their agenda of 'blame America first. '"' Both [internal and external] threats, the ad continues,' stem from either a hatred for the American ideals of freedom and equality or a misunderstanding of those ideals and their practice.8. "... But what they (A VOT) desire is that critics of the war shut their traps. This group does intend to portray critics as dangers to the country for, yes, weakening national resolve. Loose lips sink ships and all that."This is a campaign of intimidation... "Part I (Paras. 1--6)This section gives a general description of the change in the United States after September 11. "The events of September 11 divided our world into two radically different eras. "Para. 11. The writer begins the essay with the description of the tragic scene at ground zero: smokes oming out of the ruins of World Trade Towers and ashes of the thousands of the dead stirred by the breeze. And it is against such tragic background that a new age of anxiety was born.2. Why does the writer call it "a new age of anxiety"?That is because the September 11 attacks were not considered as single, individual actions but part of a well-coordinated, well-organized plan of a terrorist group with global reach. Terrible things or even more terrible things may follow. Hence the age of anxiety.anxiety: a state of feeling uneasy, apprehensive or worried about what may happen; concern about a possible future eventto smolder: to burn and smoke without flame3. If someone ... an astonishing new landscape.(1) Explain the meaning of the sentence in your own words. If someone fell asleep before September 11, like the hero in the story Rip van WinkleWashington Irving, and then woke up after September 11, he would find that great changes had taken place in the United States(2) Landscape:an expanse of natural scenery seen by the eye in one viewPara. 24. Guardsmen... at our airports. After September 11, in order to strengthen airport security, national guardsmen (国民警卫队员) were dispatched to the airports throughout the United States to help tighten security to avoid similar attacks.5. The president.., stadium rooftop.

If you fit the statistical averages, by the age of 20 you will have been exposed to at least 20,000 hours of television. Y ou can add10,000 hours for each decade you have lived after the age of 20. The only things Americans do more than watch television are work and sleep.Calculate for a moment what could be done with even a part of those hours. Five thousand hours, I am told, are what a typical college undergraduate spends working on a bachelors degree. In 10,000 hours you could have learned enough to become an astronomer or engineer. Y ou could have learned several languages fluently. If it appealed to you, youcould be reading Homer in the original Greek or Dostoyevsky in Russian. If it didn t, you could have walked around the world and written a book about it.The trouble with television is that it discourages concentration. Almost anything interesting and rewarding in life requires some constructive, consistently applied effort. The dullest, the least gifted of us can achieve things that seem miraculous to those who never concentrate onanything. But television encourages us to apply no effort. It sells us instantgratification(满意). It diverts us only to divert, to make the time pass without pain. Television s variety becomes a narcotic(麻醉的), nor a stimulus. Its serial, kaleidoscopic (万花筒般的)exposures force us to follow its lead. The viewer is on a perpetual guidedtour: 30 minutes at the museum, 30 at the cathedral, 30 for a drink, then back on the bus to the next attraction—except on television, typically, the spans allotted arc on theorder of minutes or seconds, and the chosen delights are more often car crashes and people killing one another. In short, a lot of television usurps(篡夺;侵占)one of the mostprecious of all human gifts, the ability to focus your attention yourself, rather than just passively surrender it.Capturing your attention—and holding it—is the prime motive of most television programming and enhances its role as a profitable advertising vehicle. Programmers live in constantfear of losing anyone s attention—anyone s. The surest way to avoid doing so is to keep everything brief, not to strain the attention of anyone but instead to provide constantstimulation through variety, novelty, action and movement. Quite simply, television operates on the appeal to the short attention span.It is simply the easiest way out. But it has come to be regarded as a given, as inherent in the medium itself; as an imperative, as though General Sarnoff, or one of the other augustpioneers of video, had bequeathed(遗留;传于)to us tablets of stone commanding that nothing in television shall ever require more than a few moments Concentration. In its place that is fine. Who can quarrel with a medium that so brilliantly packages escapist entertainment as a mass marketing tool? But I see its values now pervading this nationand its life. It has become fashionable to think that, like fast food, fast ideas are the way to get to a fast moving, impatient public. In the case of news, this practice, in my view, results in inefficient communication. I question how much of television s nightly news effort is really absorbable and understandable.Much of it is what has been aptly described as “machine gunning with scraps.”I think the technique fights coherence. I think it tends to make things ultimately boring (unless theyare accompanied by horrifying pictures) because almost anything is boring if you know almost nothing about it.I believe that TV s appeal to the short attention span is not only inefficient communication but decivilizing as well. Consider the casual assumptions that television tends tocultivate: that complexity must be avoided, that visual stimulation is a substitute for thought, thatverbal precision is an anachronism. It may be old fashioned, but I was taughtthat thought is words, arranged in grammatically precise. There is a crisis of literacy in this country. One study estimates that some 30 million adult Americans are “functionally illiterate” and cannot read or write well enough to answer thewant ad or understand the instructions on a medicine bottle.Literacy may not be an inalienable human right, but it is one that the highly literate Founding Fathers might not have found unreasonable or even unattainable. We are not only notattaining it as a nation, statistically speaking, but we are falling further and further short of attaining it. And, while I would not be so simplistic as to suggest that television is thecause, I believe it contributes and is an influence.Everything about this nation—the structure of the society, its forms of family organization, its economy, its place in the world—has become more complex, not less. Y et itsdominating communications instrument, its principal form of national linkage, is one that sells neat resolutions to human problems that usually have no neat resolutions. It is allsymbolized in my mind by the hugely successful art form that television has made central to the culture, the 30 second commercial: the tiny drama of the earnest housewife whofinds happiness in choosing the right toothpaste. When before in human history has so much humanity collectively surrendered so much of its leisure to one toy, one mass diversion? When before has virtually an entire nationsurrendered itself wholesale to a medium for selling? Some years ago Y ale University law professor Charles L. Black. Jr. wrote: “… forced feeding on trivial fare is not itself a trivial matter. I think this society is being forced, fed with trivialfare, and I fear that the effects on our habits of mind, our language, our tolerance for effort, and our appetite for complexity are only dimly perceived. If I am wrong, we will havedone no harm to look at the issue skeptically and critically, to consider how we should be residing it. I hope yo u will join with me in doing so.”

No ,I m a nurse.(不,我是一个护士。
Is she also a nurse她是否也是一个护士她回答说Yes ,she is.(是的。
她是。
)我又问说Is she patient(她有没有耐心)她回答说No, she is impatient.(不,她没有耐心。
Is the doctor also impatient(医生是不是也没有耐心)她回答说No, he is nice doctor.(不,他是个好医生。
Am I , Is he ,Are you 所谓be 动词的句型,第二天你学了第二个所谓一般动词的句型,你就可以说,She is a nurse ,I know her. (我认识她)I like her.(我喜欢她)I respect her.(我尊敬她)等等,话更是讲不完了,第三天,你学到动词的过去式,你更可以说“她是一个护士,我认识她,I saw her yesterday.(我昨天还见过她)I taught her English last week.(我上个礼拜才教她英语)。
Recently it has become a common phenomenon for college students to have two majors at the same time. In this way, they can get double BA degrees whenthey graduate from the university several years later.Although it may bring unfavorable consequences, we can be sure to conclude that this practice is favorable on (he whole. To begin with, most studentswill become more hardworking and efficient in order to finish the learning laskssatisfactorily. Moreover, with two degrees at hand after graduation, they willstand a better chance in the job market full of fierce competition. In the third place, as for today's university students, tuition and fees arc becoming more and more expensive. If they can make achievements in study at school and find asatisfactory job afterwards, it will not be a big problem.Weighing the pros and cons of such a new trend, we can naturally arrive at the conclusion that it is beneficial and rewarding. This system not only compels students to work hard, but also prepares them for the coming competition.【点评】首段直接点题,说明现象;第二段分述三个优点,其中首句为让步状语从句,意思是“虽然可能带来负面的后果,但总体上是有益的〃;第三段照应第二段,得出结论。
