得夺市安庆阳光实验学校高二英语上学期开学考试试题满分:120分时间:120分钟一、阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)AIf feels like every time my mother and I start to have a conversation, it turns into an argument. We talk about something as simple as dinner plans and suddenly, my mother will push the conversation into World War? She’ll talk about my lack of a bright future because I don’t plan to be a doctor. And much to her disappointment, I don’t want to do any job related to science, either. In fact, when I was pushed to say that I planned to major (主修) in English and communications, she nearly had a heart attack.“Why can’t you be like my coworker’s son?”she bemoans all the time. Her co worker’s son received a f our year scholarship and is now earning 70,000 dollars a year as an engineer. I don’t know what to answer except that I simply can’t be like Mr Perfect as I’ve called the unnamed co worker’s son.I can’t be like him.I’m the type of person who loves to help out in the community, write until the sun goes down, and most of all, wants to achieve a career because I love it, not because of fame (名声) or salary.I understand why my mother is worried about my future major. I’ve seen my mother struggle to raise me on her small salary and work long hours. She leaves the house around 6:30 am and usually comes home around 5 pm or even 6 pm. However, I want her to know that by becoming a doctor, it doesn’t mean I’ll be successful.I’d rather follow my dreams and create my own future.1. Which of the following topics do the writer and his mother often talk about?A. The writer’sstudies. B. The writer’s future job.C. Dinnerplans.D. Wars around the world.2. We can infer from Paragraph 1 that the writer’s mother________.A. doesn’t want the writer to major in EnglishB. doesn’t think the writer should be a doctorC. gets along very well with the writerD. doesn’t think working in the science field is a good idea3. The underlined word “bemoans” in Paragraph 2 most probably means “________”.A.agreesB. shoutsC.complainsD. smiles4. Which of the following statements is probably TRUE about the writer?A. He wants to be like his mother’s coworker’s son.B. He wants to find a job in his community in the future.C. He doesn’t think his mother’s coworker’s son is perfect.D. He wants to do something he really likes in the future.BREADY or not, the college application season has begun. There are two main kinds of early admissions programs: Early Action and Early Decision. Early Action is a great choice for the well-prepared student. Students apply early, and are allowed to apply under an Early Action program to as many colleges as they choose. The biggest advantage for students is that colleges let them know early –in most cases, before Jan 1. Roughly 15 percent of colleges and universities offer an Early Action option(选择). Oct 15 is now the first deadline for many colleges and universities. This movement toward earlier deadlines is especially popular in the Southeast, with many of the large public universities leading the way. North Carolina State University, the University of South Carolina and the University of Georgia all have an Oct 15 Early Action deadline.who are accepted must take back their other applications and should attend that school. Students are allowed to apply to just one school under an Early Decision program. Early Decision deadlines are in early November, with colleges letting students know by mid-December. Many students believe that they are more likely to be accepted if they apply for Early Decision, but it actually depends. In some cases there is big increase in students being accepted, and at other colleges it is not that big at all. Generally, the strongest students are applying early. Athletes and students with focused interests are encouraged to apply for Early DecisionChoose the best answer:5. What is the author’s purpose in writing the article?A. To explain the process of applying to study in the US.B. To describe two types of US college early admissions programs.C. To encourage students who want to study in the US to apply early.D. To list the advantages of early admissions programs.6. Which of the following statements is TRUE of Early Action according to the article?A. A student who is accepted as an Early Action applicant must attend the college they apply to.B. The deadline for Early Action is usually two months earlier than the one for Early Decision.C. Students can apply to several colleges at the same time under an Early Action program.D. Students can apply for Early Action at the majority of universities and colleges in the US.7. The underlined word “reversed” in Paragraph 3 probably means_______.A. arrangedB. balancedC. acceptedD. changed8. What can be concluded from the article?A. Students are not allowed to apply for both Early Decision and Early Action at the same time.B. Students applying for Early Decision impress colleges because they tend to be more active than others.C. Early Decision is most fit for students who are skilled in some field.D. Those applying for Early Decision have a better chance of being accepted than those applying for Early Action.C MONTREAL(Reuters)—Crossing the US-Canada border to go to church on a Sunday cost an American $10,000 for breaking Washington’s strict new security rules. The expensive trip to church was a surprise for Richard Albert, who lives right on the Canadian border. Albert often crosses the border like the other half-dozen people of Township 15. The nearby Quebec village of St. Pamphile is where they shop, eat and go to church. There are many such situations in these areas along the largely unguarded 5,530-mile border between Canada and the US, which in some cases actually runs down the middle of streets or through buildings. As a result, Albert says he did not expect any problems three weeks ago when he returned home to the US after attending church in Canada, as usual. The US customs station in this area is closed on Sundays, so he just drove around the locked gate, as he had done every weekend since the gate appeared last May, following a tightening of border security. Two days later. Albert was told to go to the customs office, where an officer told him he had been caught on camera crossing the border illegally.Ottawa has given out special passes to some 300 Americans in that area so they can enter the country when Canadian customs(海关) stations are closed, but the US stopped a similar program last May. That forces thepeople to a 200-mile detour along hilly roads to get home through another border checkpoint.Albert has requested that the customs office change their decisions on the fine, but he has not attended a Sunday church since. “I feel like I’m living in a prison,” he said.9. We learn from the text that Richard Albertis .A. an American working in a Canadian churchB. a Canadian living in a Quebec villageC. a Canadian working in a customs stationD. an American living in Township 1510. Albert was fined because he .A. broke the American security rulesB. failed to obey traffic rulesC. worked in St. Pamphile without a passD. damaged the gate of the customs office11.What would be the best title for the text?A. A Cross-country TripB. An Expensive Church VisitC. An Unguarded BorderD. A Special Border Pass D Alibaba started taking the lead in China, simply enough, by connecting big Chinese, manufacturers(制造商)with big buyers across the world. Its business-to-business site, allowed business to buy almost everything. Alibaba’s advantage wasn’t hard to identify: size.Alibaba is just big, even by Chinese standards. Its marketplaces attract 231 million active buyers, 8 million sellers, 11.3 billion orders a year—and Alibaba is just the middleman. It encourages people to use its markets—not charging small sellers a percentage of the sale.If you want a quick look into the influence of Alibaba on daily Chinese life, take my experience. I moved to Beijing almost a year ago and quickly got tired of visiting small stores across the crowded, polluted city of 20 million people in search of new electronics, bathroom furnishings. “You’re looking for what exactly? Why not try it? ” my Chinese teacher asked me one day. With that, my wonderful new relationship with Alibaba began.Alibaba’s original business-to-business model now is secondary to consumer buying. Chinese retail(零售)buying makes up 80% of Alibaba’s profit, and leading that group is Taobao, wi th 800 million items for sale and the most unbelievable selection of things you’ll ever find. is Alibaba’s other big site, where you can find brand name goods from Nike and Unilever near the lowest prices. What I have a hard time explaining to friends and family back in the U. S. is how China has gone beyond traditional shopping---big-box retailers(零售商)especially---in favor of online purchases on Taobao and a few other sites. In smaller towns than Beijing, where big retailers have not yet traveled, shopping online is shopping, and shopping is Taobao.I have a list of some of my recent purchases on Taobao for a sense of how extensive(广泛的) the marketplace is. Almost everything arrived a day or two after ordering with free shipping. I’m not even a big buyer, because I need friends to help me search the Chinese-language site. When I was searching my purchase history on my Chinese teacher’s iPad, which helps me buy goods, I looked through with great difficulty about 10 of her purchases for every one of mine.12. Alibaba’s advantage mainly lies in _________.A. its big sizeB. its business-to-business serviceC. its not charging small sellersD. its low price13. We know from the passage that Alibaba___________.A. Alibaba is of middle size among all the online sitesB .Alibaba will continue to developC. Alibaba stands out as the best online siteD. Alibaba acts as a bridge between the buyers and sellers14. What can be inferred from the passage?A. The author’s Chin ese teacher is also an online purchase lover.B. Taobao has no obvious advantage over other similar online sites.C. Alibaba’s business-to-business service earns more money than retail now.D. provides more profit than Taobao.15. What is the passage mainly about?A. Shopping online is TaoBao.B. The influence of shopping online goes beyond traditional shopping.C. Alibaba greatly influences people’s daily purchase in China.D. How the author purchases online in China.二、七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)Time is the most valuable thing that mankind has. 16 . Many peopletry to manage their time. That was me in 1940—the youngest and smallest baggage boy at New York City’s Pennsyl vania Railway Station. After just a few days on the job, I began noticing that the other fellows were overcharging pas sengers. I’d like to join them, thinking, “Everyone else is doing it.”When I got home that night, I told my dad what I wanted to do. “You give an honest day’s work,” he said, looking at me straight in the eye. “They’re paying you. If they want to do that, you let them do that.”I followed my dad's advice for the rest of that summer and have lived by his words ever since.Of all the jobs I've had, it was my experience at Pennsylvania Railway Station that has stuck with me. Just hearing that name makes many people’s hair stand on end. In reality, these big fish have more to fear from us than we do from them. For many years, people killed countless great white sharks in the waters around the United States. But thanks to conservation (保护) efforts, great whites are making a comeback in the U.S. Two recent studies show that the population of these sharks is rising along the east and west coast. Why is the growing population of a killer fish something to celebrate? “When you fish too many of them, you start to lose balance in the environment,” says sh ark researcher Tobey Curtis. As the biggest killer, sharks help keep the populations of fish, seals, and other creatures they eat from growing too large. In spite of their importance, great white sharks had long been hunted for theirmeat and their fins (鳍). Then, in 1997, the U.S. government passed a law that didn’t allow the hunting of great whites. Afterwards, the numbers of these sharks in the U.S. waters started to increase. The law wasn’t the only thing that has helped great whites. Conservationists h ave also played a part in the sharks’ comeback. The research group OCEARCH is using a method called tagging (加标签) to help change people’s attitudes about great white s. They let the public follow each shark as it travels the world’s oceans. OCEARCH also gives each tagged shark a name to help people form a closer connection with the big fish. The group’s most well-known shark is named Katharine. She was tagged last year near Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Since then, thousands of people have tracked(追踪)Katharine’s movements on Twitter and the OCEARCH website. This helps people see sharks in a new way. Chris Fischer, the founder of OCEARCH believes learning to appreciate great whites will encourage people to do more to protect them.8.The underlined part “makes many people’s hair stand on end” in Paragraph 1 can best be replaced by______.A. worries many peopleB. bores many peopleC. frightens many peopleD. interests many people9.The law passed in 1997 ______.A. seemed very helpfulB. let scientists downC. needed to be changedD. made people like great whites10.Katharine’s example is used to show that ______.A. great whites are in fact lovely animalsB. the OCEARCH website has a lot of visitorsC. the number of great whites is growing quicklyD. Perhaps they were busy talking, texting or checking updates on WeChat without looking at what was going on around them. As the number of this new “species” of human has kept ris ing, they have been given a new name—phubbers(低头族).Recently, a cartoon created by students from China Central Academy of Fine Arts put this group of people under the spotlight. In the short film, phubbers with various social identities(身份) bury themselves in their phones. A doctor plays with his cell phone while letting his patient die, a pretty woman takes selfie(自拍) in front of a car accident site, and a father loses his child without knowing about it while using his mobile phone. A chain of similar events eventually leads to the destruction of the world.Although the ending sounds overstated(夸大), the damage phubbing can bring is real.Your health is the first to bear the effect and result of it. “Constantly bending your head to check your ce ll phone could damage your neck,” Guangming Daily quoted doctors as saying. “The neck is like a rope that breaks after long-term stretching.” Also, staring at cell phones for long periods of time will damage you r eyesight gradually, according to the report. But that’s not all. Being a phubber could also damage your social skills and drive you away from your friends and family. At reunions with family or friends, many people tend to stick to their cell phones while others are chatting happily with each other and this creates a strange atmosphere, Qilu Evening News reported. It can also cost you your life. There have been lots of reports on phubbers who fell to their death, suffered accidents, and were robbed of their cell phones in broad daylight.12.For what purpose does the author give the example of a cartoon in Paragragh2?A. To inform people of the bad effects of phubbing.B. To advertise the cartoon made by students.C. To indicate the world will finally be destroyed by phubbers.D. His neck and eyesight will be gradually harmed.C. He will cause the destruction of the world.D. He might get separated from his friends and family.14.Which of the following may be the author’s attitude towards phubbing?A. Supportive.B. Opposed.C.Neutral(中立)D. Objective(客观)15.What may the passage talk about next?A. Advice on how to use a cell phone.B. People addicted to phubbing.C. Measures to reduce the risks of phubbing.D. Thanksgiving holiday issymbolized by its traditional food-roast turkey. But turkey is certainly notfrom Turkey. In fact, its English name is based on one big mistake. We couldsay it is a case of mistaken identity. The word “Turkey” has meant”the land of the Turks” since ancient times. In the mid-1500s, theword “turkey” was first used to refer to the bird in the Englishlanguage. The misunderstanding over theword happened because of two similar-looking kinds of birds. There is an African bird calledthe guinea fowl. Undoubtedly one of the strangest traditions of English culture, morris dancing is a form of folk dancing that dates back to the 15th century. If you ever get the opportunely, you really have to see it.Men and women wearing old-fashioned, shabby clothing dance in the streets of towns and villages across the country during the holiday periods. Women wear long, frilly skirts and men wear short trousers with bells attached to them. They dance to traditional folk music which is often played on traditional musical instruments. Some groups carry heavy black sticks which they beat against each other while they dance. Other groups wave handkerchiefs in the air while they perform. The dances are usually performed near a pub so that when it’s over, the dancers and audience can sing some traditional folk songs over a pint of beer. The celebrations will often continue long into the night, by which point most people are too drunk to think about performing again.Morris dancing is a grea t English tradition but it’s facing a big crisis. As the years go by, fewer and fewer young people are joining morris dancing groups. The dancers are getting older and older and eventually, if nothing is done to change this trends, the tradition will die out within the next few decades. If you’ve ever had the fortune to see morris dancing, you may understand why teenagers aren’t rushing to sign up. Putting it to the point, it’s not exactly the coolest thing for an 18-year-old to be doing. Why dress upin bells and funny costumes when you could be going clubbing? Or playing sport? Or doing anything else? However, it would be a great shame to lose such a fun and lively part of England’s history and culture. AJune 18 is the birthday of my late sister, Tanya. She would have been 49 years old this year, but that's increasingly difficult for me to imagine. She is frozen in time at 37.Tanya died more than a decade ago and the wound left by her loss has healed into a scar (疤痕).It's a big. scar. You can't know me for very long without discovering my scar. Trust me; if you haven't found it on your own, I will point it out to you. I want you all to know that she existed, and that she mattered. When we first lose a loved one, we ask, “How will I live without you?” and wounds are open and weeping. We don't know how we'll cope with the pain. But then the wounds form scars, and we learn to live with our new skins.“How can I remember you?” we ask.So many people are hesitant to talk about my sister. It is as though mentioning her will remind me that she is dead, and upset my balance when I am so stable and happy. But I never forget my sister, not for a moment. And so I love it when people mention Tanya's name. Occasionally, I come across one of her friends, and they casually bring up a memory, and it is like a gift.So if you have friends who have lost loved ones, please don't avoid talking about their loved one. Researchers at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg(MLU)joined forces with the Leibniz Institute for Plant Biochemistry (IPB) to discover the molecular (分子的) processes of plant growth. In Current Biology, a scientific journal, they presented their findings on high-temperature plant growth. This could lead to developing plants that can survive global warming.Plants react to even small temperature changes, but they are unable to move to new locations. “When temperatures rise, plants grow taller ... to cool themselves off. Their stalks (茎) become taller, and their leaves become narrower and grow farther apart. Yet, this makes the plant more unstable overall," explains Professor Marcel Quint, an agricultural scientist at MLU. Unstable plants bend faster in the rain and produce less food that's also less nutritious. There's still lots to learn about plant reactions to temperatures. “We are just starting to understand how plants detect(发现)the changes in temperature..."Quint says. Earlier studies have shown that the protein PIF4 directly controls plant growth and is also dependent on temperature. When it's cold, PIF4 is less active, meaning the plant doesn't grow. At higher temperatures PIF4 activates (激活) growth-promoting genes, and the plant grows taller. This is new information, says Quint. To understand it, they studied the growth of thale cress (Arabidopsis thaliana,拟南芥seedlings. Normally, its seedlings form short stems (茎) at 20 C .These stems become much longer at 28 C. They discovered a hormone(荷尔蒙)that activates the PIF4 at high temperatures, thus producing the protein. The findings may help to breed (培育) plants that remain stable even at high temperatures and produce many crops.8. Why did the researchers at MLU and IPB conduct their research?A. To study the negative effects of global warming.B. To find out how plants help reduce global warming.C. To observe how global warming affects plant growth.D. To understand the ways that plants cause global warming.9.What can we learn from paragraph 2?A. Low temperatures have little impact on plants.B. Plants prefer dry weather to rainy weather.C. Plants are very sensitive to changes in soil.D. High temperatures reduce crop production.10.What do we know about PIF4?A. It mainly exists in thale cress seedlings.B. It works differently at different temperatures.C. It is a kind of gene that controls plant growth.D. It is a plant hormone that works at high temperatures.11.Who will probably benefit most from the findings?A. Farmers.B. Botanists.C. Researchers.D. Environmentalists.DUber has picked Melbourne as the first city outside of the United States to test its flying taxis.Test flights in the Australian city will begin next year with a goal of commercial ride-hailing (打车) services by 2023, it announced on Tuesday."We will see other Australian cities following soon after,” Susan Anderson, Uber's regional manager for Australia, said at the company's annual flying car conference in Washington DC.Melbourne will be the third city to host trials of Uber's flying taxis, after Dallas, Texas, and Los Angeles, California, the electric taxis will be flown by a pilot.Uber has partnered with NASA for its flying taxi program, named Elevate, and is one of several companies racing to make flying vehicles a reality. Other big names in the business include Rolls Royce and Boeing.Even as it works on developing autonomous, electric flying vehicles – which are still several years away - Uber is taking its service to the skies in other ways. The company will start a helicopter service on July 9, taking passengers from Manhattan to JFK Airport in eight minutes. It says customers who buy the roughly $200 ticket will save an hour of travel time during rush hour. But the rollout (首次展示)of that service is now clouded by safety concerns about increased air traffic in cities, following two accidents in New York City in recent weeks.A helicopter crashed onto the roof of a Manhattan building on June 10, killing the pilot. This deadly accident came weeks after a helicopter crash in the Hudson River. There were no deaths in that incident. “For us, it shows the need to make safety the absolute base of everything we do," said Eric Allison, Uber's head of Elevate.Safety will also be a concern in Australia, where Uber has nearly 4 million regular customers for its ride-hailing service.“We will continue to work with communities and governments to ensure that we create an urban aviation (飞行) ride-share network that is safe, quiet and green," Anderson said.12.What can we learn about the flying taxis from the text?A. Most flying taxis are self-driving.B. The flying taxi was first tried out in Melbourne.C. Flying taxis could be used in Australia in several years.D. The flying taxis turned out to be a failure in America.13.Why does the author mention Uber's helicopter service?A. To further introduce NASA's cooperation with Uber.B. To show the challenges facing the flying taxi service.C. To explain why Uber's technology stands out.D. To describe the development of Uber's flying services.14. What is the author's major concern about flying taxis?A. Safety.B. Management.C. Side effects.D. Affordability.15. What is the author's attitude toward the flying taxi?A. Objective.B. Skeptical.C. 2021-2022学年河北省北京师范大学沧州渤海新区附属学校高二上学期开学考试英语试题

河北省北京师范大学沧州渤海新区附属学校2021-2022学年高二上学期开学考试英语试题一、阅读理解Four homes built using everyday objectsCan newspapers and bottles be used as building materials? After touring these four homes built using these objects, you might just believe the answer is yes.Plastic Bottle Village, Bocas del ToroOne man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Truer words could not describe Robert Bezeau’s project which began in 2012. After collecting tens of thousands of bottles, Bezeau recruited a team of locals to construct a building using the unwanted materials. The Bottle Houses, Cape Egmon, Prince Edward IslandThe Bottle Houses on Prince Edward Island, Canada, are the creation of Edouard T. Arsenault and his daughter Rejeanne. The father and daughter began construction in 1980. Over the months, they collected empty bottles, and by 1981 they opened the house to the public. Since then, the building has remained open to visitors, with sunny days being the best time to visit.Earthship Biotecture, Taos, New MexicoMichael Reynolds built his first Earthship when he was 23 years old. Starting out with nothing more than empty bottles, Reynolds set out to create a home that was not only sustainable, but also easy enough for someone without a construction background to build. Earthship Biotecture offers nightly stays. Self-guided tours are also available. The Paper House, Rockport, MassachusettsWhen Elis F. Stenman built his summer home in 1922, he turned to paper for materials. The design has proven to be quite durable, as it’s still standing nearly 100 years later. The home has been open to visitors since the 1930s, and only began charging 10 cents per person in 1942 when it became a museum. Today visitors can experience the Paper House for themselves for $2 for adults and $1 for children.1.What do we know about Plastic Bottle Village?A.It was designed by Bezeau.B.It was finished in 2012.C.It became trash finally.D.It was built for a team of locals.2.Where can visitors spend the night?A.In the Bottle Houses.B.In the Paper House.C.In an Earthship.D.In Plastic Bottle Village.3.What is special about the museum in Rockport?A.It is constructed by a Canadian family.B.It is used to collect rubbish.C.It is free for children.D.It is made of paper.Beijing Opera, as one of Chinese traditional opera forms, is regarded as the national opera of China and well received all over the world.Beijing Opera arose in the late 18th century with a history of more than 200 years whose origin can date back to some old local operas, especially the Anhui Opera. It became fully developed and recognized by the mid-19th century. Now it's the biggest kind of opera in China, whose popularity spread all over the country, becoming the most popular dramatic (戏剧的) form on Chinese stage. There are four basic methods employed in a Beijing Opera performance: chang, nian, zuo, da. Generally speaking, chang means singing, and nian recitation (背诵) and oral communication, while zuo means the facial and body expressions and acting and da is Chinese Kungfu. Beijing Opera also has four main types of performers namely Sheng, Dan, Jing and Chou. Sheng and Dan mean the main roles in the opera. The painted face, in Chinese called 'jing', is a name for the role of the man that has some special characteristic or appearance. Chou is easily understood from the role's name as a clown with an ugly appearance, who is to provide light relief and comedy. In recent years, Beijing Opera has tried to make some changes, including improving the performance quality. Widely spreading all over China with great influence, Beijing Opera contains the spirit of Chinese national culture, but the shortage of funding has become a big problem as the form enters the 21st century. There is no doubt that it is a treasure of Chinese culture!4.What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us?A.The history of Beijing Opera.B.The great influence Beijing Opera has on us.C.Beijing Opera is popular in China.D.The relationship between the Anhui Opera and Beijing Opera.5.When a performer is saying something to another, which method does it belong to?A.Chang B.Nian C.Zuo D.Da6.A funny man whose nose was all white in stage most probably acted the role ________.A.Sheng B.Dan C.Jing D.Chou7.What will be the future of the Beijing Opera?A.Very bright.B.Certainly dark.C.More popular.D.Much uncertain.Lunch is a part of Chinese culture. When I'm back home in England, I often miss Chinese lunch. At home, at work, at school, English lunchtime is far from a formal meal of the day. It seems that we can't wait to finish lunch as quickly as possible. People working in the office take out packed sandwiches that are not delicious. Work canteens(餐厅) are crowded with people too busy to eat, rushing to the checkout(收银台) with something in hand so that they can quickly eat up on the way to another meeting. A lot of work in England leaves little time to have our meals and enjoy them. Perhaps this is why so many of us hold such unhealthy relationships with food. The way we plan our days in England shows we don't care about mealtimes. Meetings, lectures, interviews and so on are all planned from 12 a.m. to 2 p.m. In Beijing lunch often starts from 11:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. And owners of many shops gather in small groups to share a meal, which is hardly seen in England. I have never experienced such a culture where finding time to eat is so important. In China, food is shared and the time is enjoyed as a moment of get-together in busy days. This is a value and practice we should hold in our lives in England. In China food is not only a necessity(必需品), but also a time for get-together with friends and family, and I love it.8.Why can't most English people enjoy their lunch?A.They think British food is terrible.B.They are anxious to go shopping.C.They are too busy with work.D.They have much housework.9.Which does the author like most about Chinese lunch?A.Its atmosphere B.Its tasteC.Its price D.Its kinds10.What can we learn from Paragraph 3?A.English people don't take mealtimes seriously.B.English lunchtime lasts one and a half hours.C.English people never experience Chinese culture.D.English people like to get together in groups.11.What is mainly talked about in the text?A.The best way to experience Chinese lunch.B.Lunch differences between China and England.C.Suggestions of enjoying English culture.D.The stressful lifestyles of English people.Mark Twain (1835-1910) — we've all heard the name, but what makes him “the father of American literature” as classic US author William Faulkner once called him?Mark Twain is someone Americans are taught to love. Older relatives, English teachers and the media always praise him. But when you actually take the time to read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, you find that his work is more wonderful than you could have ever imagined. The novel describes a young boy named Tom Sawyer growing up in a small town along the Mississippi River. He explores the countryside on a riverboat with his friends, falls in love with girls, starts secret clubs and searches for treasure. Twain's idea of childhood is magical—a time of imagination, wonder and, of course, adventure.More importantly, through the eyes of Tom Sawyer, Twain cleverly makes fun of US culture. For example, Tom hates going to church, and Twain uses scenes of Tom there to mock religion and its old traditions. “Often, the less there is to justify a traditional custom, the harder it is to get rid of it,” he writes in one chapter.Twain's writing is full of these kinds of critical points about culture and politics. That's why he is so loved in the US — he wasn't afraid to state his opinions, and he did so clearly. For instance, Twain didn't like US wars abroad. In 1900, after the US invaded the Philippines, Twain wrote in a newspaper article: “We do not intend to free, but to subjugate the people of the Philippines…We have gone there to conquer.” He also believed strongly in women's right to vote in elections and gave a famous speech on the subject, called “V otes for Women”, in 1901. “Tom was a glittering hero once more—the pet of the old, the envy of the young,” Twain writes in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. But he could just as well be describing himself.12.After reading The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, you are likely to think according to the author.A.it's not worth all the praise.B.it's even better than you expected.C.it's as wonderful as you expected.D.it's better to read it with teachers.13.In the third paragraph, the author mainly .A.indicates what makes Tom Sawyer's adventures so wonderfulB.explains where Twain's idea of childhood comes fromC.shows how naughty and adventurous Tom Sawyer isD.gives a brief description of the novel14.What does the underlined word “mock” in the fourth paragraph mean?A.Make fun of.B.Show respect for.C.Give examples of.D.Give reasons for.15.Twain is so loved in the US because .A.he showed readers a magical childhood that everyone would loveB.he criticized American culture and society clearly and cleverlyC.he wrote bad things about US wars abroadD.he supported women's right to vote二、七选五Successful high school students do these thingsWant to learn what many successful high school students have already known? 高二上学期英语开学考试试卷一、阅读理解1. 阅读理解I have heard having a good sense of humour often helps in breaking the ice. Also people remember you because of your humour. But I think I don’t have a very good sense of humour. Could you suggest how to build on this? ——Radha KarnikThis is a great question that is unfortunately difficult to answer. I can only give you my views on this topic, which may or may not be correct. I know that my sense of humour developed over time. When I was younger I was not funny at all, now I can easily make people laugh. At the same time, sometimes I say things that I think are very funny but others do not. Improving wit and humour, I believe, is an ongoing process. Now, there are various forms of humour and everyone has their individual style. Overall, I believe being fluent in a language is very important for being witty or funny. The way we play around with words adds the “funny” tag to an otherwise normal sentence. Also, seeing irony is very important. I think humour is often the link between two unrelated things. In my experience, laughing frequently and appreciating other people’s jokes and wit are very important. Within these, finding humour in everydaynormal situations is the key.I often notice what is going on around me and say funny things in my head and laugh to myself. That serves almost as practice for when I am in a group. I watch comedy shows and movies and I am sure that has some effect on helping me improve my sense of humour. And last, having confidence that you are witty is important. There will always be someone wittier or funnier than you, which is fine. Just work on building your own style.Remember, if you are trying to be funny and witty in order to break the ice at a business function, be careful. In those situations, humour has to be mild and politically correct.Yours,Brad(1)Radha Karnik’s problem is that he doesn’t ________.A . have friendsB . have a good sense of humourC . understand others’ humourD . know the functions of humour(2)By telling his own experience, Brad tried to make Radha Karnik believe that ________.A . a sense of humour can be developedB . a sense of humour helps impress othersC . laughter is the best medicineD . laughter and humour go hand in hand(3)Which of the following would Brad agree with?A . Everyone knows how to appreciate others’ jokes.B . Everyone is asfunny and witty as others.C . Everyone needs to laugh to themselves each day.D . Everyone has their individual style of humour.2. 阅读理解Space is where our future is — trips to the Moon, Mars and beyond. Most people would think that aside from comets and stars, there is little else out there. But, since our space journey started we have left so much trash there that scientists are now concerned that if we don’t clean it up, we may all be in mortal danger. The first piece of space junk was created in 1964, when the American satellite Vanguard Ⅰ stopped operating and lost its connection with the ground center. However, since it kept orbiting around the Earth without any consequences, scientists became increasingly comfortable abandoning things that no longer served any useful purpose in space. It is estimated that there are now over 500,000 pieces of man-made trash orbiting the Earth at speeds of up to 17,500 miles per hour. The junk varies from tiny pieces of paint chipped off rockets to cameras, huge fuel tanks, and even odd items like the million-dollar tool kit that astronaut Heidemarie Stefanyshyn Piper lost during a spacewalk. The major problem with the space trash is that it may hit working satellites and damage traveling spacecraft. Moreover, pieces of junk may collide with each other and break into pieces which fall back to the Earth. To avoid this, scientists have invented several ways for clearing the sky. Ground stations have been built to monitor larger pieces of space trash to preventthem from crashing into working satellites or space shuttles. Future plans include a cooperative effort among many nations to stop littering in space and to clean up the trash already there.(1)What was the first piece of man-made space trash?A . A camera.B . A tool kit.C . A broken satellite.D . A fuel tank.(2)Why were scientists NOT concerned about space trash in the beginning?A . It did not cause any problems.B . In a recent Hollywood comedy, that is exactly what happens.Dave Kovic, played by Kevin Kline, is a kind-hearted man who runs a business that finds people jobs. He leads a typical American way of life, exceptfor one thing-he looks exactly like the president, Bill Mitchell. In fact, the only thing that makes him dif ferent from the nation’s leader is that he is very nice! The president has started using look-alikes during some public appearances. Dave is offered a chance to “serve his country” by becoming one. However, things go wrong. The president becomes very ill and Dave ends up acting as the president forever.Director Ivan Reitman, who made the popular and successful comedies like Twins, Ghostbusters and Legal Eagles, could have gone for easy laughs by making fun of the American government. Instead, Dave is an attractive comedy about an ordinary man in extraordinary situations. Kevin Kline gives a double performance as Dave and the president, and Sigourney Weaver is at her best as his First Lady. The love story that develops between her role and Dave is a real classic. The film is 100% American. However, if you’ve ever felt that anybody could do a better job running the country than the people in power, then you’ll enjoy Dave!(1)What is the purpose of the text?A . The courses are flexible — normally three to five hours of study a week —done at any time, short and video-rich. They are also heavily dependent on crowd sourcing: you can discuss a course with fellow students through online forums, discussion boards and peer review. Students don’t have to finish the courses, pass assessments or do assignments, but, if they do, they get a certification of participation. The Open University launched Future Learn, the UK’s answer to US platforms such as Coursera, EdX and Udacity, which have been offering MOOCs from top US universities for the past two years. The response has been incredible, with more than three million people registering worldwide. Meanwhile, in 2012, Edinburgh University became the first non-US institution to join Coursera’s partnership, comprising 13 universities. “We already run 50 online master’s degrees, so this was a logical expansion,” says Professor Jeff Haywood, Edinburgh’s vice-prin cipal. “It’s an investment in teaching methods research. How am I going to teach introductory philosophy to 100,000 people? That’s what I call educational R&D.” He adds “If you lookahead 10 years, you’d expect all students graduating to have taken some on line courses, so you’ve got to research that. Our MOOCs are no more in competition with our degrees than a lifelong learning course because they don’t carry credits.”Cooperation is key, Haywood stresses. It is far better to offer 20-30 courses in your own areas of expertise and let other institutions do likewise. Professor Mike Sharples, FutureLearn’s academic lead, goes further: “We’ve tied the elements available before into a package of courses offered by leading universities worldwide on a new software platform, with a new way of promoting it and also a new social-learning teaching method. You won’t just receive an exam, but be able to discuss and mark each other’s assignments.”Bath University, one of more than 20 universities working with FutureLearn, launches its first course, Inside Cancer, next January, and regards MOOCs as a way of breaking down age barriers. “There’s no reason why someone doing GCSEs should not look at our MOOCs and get quite a way through them, or someone at PhD level and beyon d,” says Professor Bernie Morley, expert for learning and teaching.(1)MOOCs have these features EXCEPT that ________.A . Edinburgh University became the first non-US institution to join itC . students can get a certification of participation without passing assessmentsD . the number of people registering in the platform is beyond expectation (3)What can be inferred from Professor Bernie Morley in the last paragraph?A . People at PhD level have already known everything about MOOCs.B . People with various learning levels will probably show interest in MOOCs.C . Inside Cancer will be the most popular course for someone doing GCSEs.D . MOOCs are not so competitive as lifelong learning courses due to the problems of credits.(4)The passage mainly deals with ________.A . the appearance of a new learning platformB . the various opinions on Future LearnC . the popularity of no-credit coursesD . the advantages of online teaching methods二、完形填空5. 阅读下面的短文, 从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中, 选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
