Please write your answers on the ANSWER SHEET.Passage OneOnly three years ago 41-year-old Lewis Winfield had a high-powered job in an investment bank, earning hundreds of thousands a year. With two children at top London schools and a house英语试卷 B 第 4 页共11 页in the West End, he and his wife Jackie, a top divorce lawyer, led an often hectic social life involving a great deal of entertaining of clients and trips to the opera and theatre. But the couple did not live beyond their means and from the outside one would have said that they were extremely fortunate.Surprisingly, perhaps, the background of both Lewis and Jackie was anything but privileged, both having been brought up on rough inner-city council estates where most children could expect to end up unemployed. But despite attending a dead-end school, Lewis was lucky enough to encounter a maths teacher who, recognizing his ability, gave him extra help, enabling him to get a scholarship to Oxford, which set him on the road to success. However, even while making a mint at the bank Lewis felt unable to forget his background and his less fortunate childhood friends, who, most unusually for someone in his position, he still saw from time to time. Today he describes how at the age of 41 he felt so haunted by life's unfairness that he felt he could no longer justify what he described as his "absurdly inflated pay cheque”. Backed by Jackie, his wife, Lewis applied for a post working as the financial manager for a well-known charity that helped disadvantaged children. After a series of lengthy interviews, to his astonishment, Lewis was offered the job and today he can be found behind a desk in an office, which, while not dilapidated, is nothing like the impressive surroundings he was used to working in.“I'm paid a fraction of what I used to get, but it’s the best move I’ve ever made in my life,”Lewis tells anyone willing to listen. “Whereas at the bank I always had the uneasy feeling my money was completely undeserved, here I’m certain I’m doing something worthwhile --- I know where every penny the charity brings in goes, that’s my job. We get reports on the families we help and the work we do makes a real difference in children’s lives. I feel comfortable with who I am. It’s a huge relief.”Asked what his regrets are for the life he left behind, Lewis admits to missing the excitement that working in an investment bank generates. “There was a definite buzz around. But that’s it. Nothing else." Lewis Winfield, a man at ease with his conscience.1. What kind of life did Lewis and his wife seem to have three years ago?A. A life in which they spent more money than they had.B. A life which was mostly spent with their family, when not working.C. A good life but with some problems at work.D. A privileged life.2. Why was it rather surprising that Lewis had such a high-powered job?A. Because Lewis did not do well at school.B. Because although his school was good, Lewis did not do well there.C. Because Lewis did not go to university.D. Because Lewis was brought up in an area where children did not receive a goodeducation.3. Why did Lewis change his job?A. Because he felt he had too much responsibility.B. Because he wanted to help others who were not as lucky as him.C. Because he wanted to help his childhood friends.英语试卷 B 第 5 页共11 页D. Because he did not know what to do with his money.4. What kind of job did Lewis take?A. A job looking after money for a children's charity.B. A job working with children who have difficult lives.C. A job with a charity in which he writes reports on disadvantaged children.D. A job with a charity that does not have much money.5. What does Lewis feel now about his previous job?A. There are many things he misses, but he wouldn't change his present job.B. He enjoyed the lively atmosphere.C. He does not like his previous job at all.D. There was nothing he enjoyed about it.Passage TwoBeing sociable looks like a good way to add years to your life. Relationships with family, friends, neighbors, even pets, will all do the trick, but the biggest longevity boost seems to come from marriage or an equivalent relationship. The effect was first noted in 1858 by William Farr, who wrote that widows and widowers were at a much higher risk of dying than their married peers. Studies since then suggest that marriage could add as much as seven years to a man’s life and two to a woman’s. The effect holds for all causes of death, whether illness, accident or self-harm.Even if the odds are stacked against you, marriage can more than compensate. Linda Waite of the University of Chicago has found that a married older man with heart disease can expect to live nearly four years longer than an unmarried man with a healthy heart. Likewise, a married man who smokes more than a pack a day is likely to live as long as a divorced man who doesn’t smoke. There’s a flip side, however, as partners are more likely to become ill or die in the couple of years following their spouse’s death, and caring for a spouse with mental disorder can leave you with some of the same severe problems. Even so, the odds favor marriage. In a 30-year study of more than 10,000 people, Nicholas Christakis of Harvard Medical School describes how all kinds of social networks have similar effects. So how does it work? The effects are complex, affected by socio-economic factors, health-service provision, emotional support and other more physiological mechanisms. For example, social contact can boost development of the brain and immune system, leading to better health and less chance of depression later in life. People in supportive relationships may handle stress better. Then there are the psychological benefits of a supportive partner.A life partner, children and good friends are all recommended if you aim to live to 100. The ultimate social network is still being mapped out, but Christakis says: “People are interconnected, so their health is interconnected.”6 William Farr’s study and other studies show that _________.A. social life provides an effective cure for illnessB. being sociable helps improve one’s quality of lifeC. women benefit more than men from marriageD. marriage contributes a great deal to longevity英语试卷 B 第 6 页共11 页7. Linda Waite’s studies support the idea that _________.A. older men should quit smoking to stay healthyB. marriage can help make up for ill healthC. the married are happier than the unmarriedD. unmarried people are likely to suffer in later life8. It can be inferred from the context that the “flip side” (Line 4, Para. 2) refers to _________.A. the disadvantages of being marriedB. the emotional problems arising from marriageC. the responsibility of taking care of one’s familyD. the consequence of a broken marriage9. What does the author say about social networks?A. They have effects similar to those of a marriage.B. They help develop people’s community spirit.C. They provide timely support for those in need.D. They help relieve people of their life’s burdens.10. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A. It’s important that we develop a social network when young.B. Getting a divorce means risking a reduced life span.C. To stay healthy, one should have a proper social network.D. We should share our social networks with each other.Passage ThreeAirline companies are responsible for transporting your luggage. If you cannot recover it at the point of arrival, you must inform the airline immediately. They will carry out the necessary search. If the luggage is recovered, it will be delivered to your place of residence. If you wish to insure your luggage, you may do so at your own expense. Some airlines restrict luggage weight to 44 pounds (20kg); in other cases, there is no weight restriction, but you are not allowed more than two pieces of luggage. Inquire about luggage allowances from the airline with which you will be traveling. However, you must pay extra for excess luggage, which is not reimbursed by Canadian International Development Agency(CIDA).Each suitcase, bag or package must be clearly labeled with your name and destination. If you do not know the exact destination address at the time of your departure, label your luggage in care of the executing agency whose name appears in the Training Agreement, using the following model:Surname, first nameName of your countryAddress of the executing agencyCity, country, postal codeTelephone number of executing agencyIf you do not have this information, please label your luggage with the name and address of the institution you are to attend in Canada. This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that they are “hot”.That’s true. The time of the day when you feel energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at this peak. For some people the peak comes during the morning. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar words: “Get up, John! You’ll be late for work again!”The possible explanation to the trouble is that he is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.You cannot change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you are sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to英语试卷 B 第8 页共11 页do. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam and work better at your low point.Get off to a slow start, which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy for your sharper hours.16. Dr. Kleitman thinks that ______________.A. getting up late in the morning means lazinessB. if your energy peak is in the evening, you might like getting up earlyC. people can do nothing about energy cycleD. spending some time yawning and stretching helps to keep you energetic17. You get 30 minutes for this part. There are 4 passages and 20 questions. Please write your answers on the ANSWER SHEET.Passage OneQuestions 1 to 5 are based on the followingpassage. Water in the DesertDeserts are regions that receive less than 25 centimeters of annual precipitation. Although deserts are usually thought of as being hot, they also are found in cold climates, such as Antarctica.Deserts are classified according to the amount of rainfall they receive. They driest deserts are called hyper-arid, where rain is absent for at least twelve consecutive months. Arid deserts experience some rainfall but receive less than 25o millimeters per year. Finally, semi-arid deserts see between 250 and 500 millimeters英语试卷B第5页共15页of rain.Despite the long-term lack of rain, deserts occasionally are drenched by violent storm. During such downpours, dried stream channels, called arroyos, rapidly fill and spill over, sometimes, causing dangerous flash floods. As the water rushes down mountains and erodes the land, it carries gravel, rock, and sand, which are deposited on the bottom of the arroyos as fan-shaped formations called alluvial fans. Some deserts are traversed by their own permanentrivers, known as exotic rivers, which are fed by water from outside the desert. Some well-known exotic rivers are the Nile River in Egypt, the Yellow River in China, and the Colorado River in Arizona. Other sources of water include underground springs or reservoirs, which provide life-sustaining moisture to desert vegetation. Deserts abound with plant species that have adapted to the dry environment by extending taproots deep into the ground to absorb the water below.Temporary lakes may form when rainfall is sufficient. These lakes occur in basins offering no outlet. When the lake beds dry up, they leave a flat plain encrusted with salt, an area known as a playa. Over a hundred playas dot the landscape of North American deserts, including Great Salt Lake in Utah.A scarcity of rain does not always create a desert. There must also be a high rate of evaporation relative to precipitation --- a measure known as potential evapo-transpiration. That gauge totals the water lost through both normal evaporation and the evaporation that occurs from plant life. Potential evapo-transpiration is the amount of water that could evaporate in any area. When this potential exceeds actual precipitation, desert-like conditions will arise.AThus deserts can be either very hot or very cold, so long as the potential evaporation is greater than the precipitation. BIcy deserts like Antarctica collect rain in frozen snow that never seeps into the ground. CAnd hot deserts like the Sahara receive little rain, so little that the amount is less than the potential evaporation. D Water is responsible for the concentration of mineral deposits under the desert surface. Rainfall passes through mineral layers and re-deposits the minerals near the water table, where they can be easily extracted in mining operations. Mineral deposits also are enriched by the evaporation of water in the playas, which yield minerals such as gypsum and salt compounds such as sodium nitrate and sodium chloride. An example of such evaporation is shown by the Great Basin Desert in the western United States, which contains boron, an essential ingredient in themanufacture of drugs, water softeners, glass, and various agricultural chemicals. The role of water in creating deserts is illustrated b y the Atacama Desert in northern Chile in South America. That desert spans the areabetween the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Andes Mountains to the east. High atmospheric pressure over the Andes causes dry , cold air to descend to Earth. This air lacks water vapor and is easily heated by the sun, raising the ground temperatures and lowering the humidity --- perfect conditions for a desert.Rain is sparse in the Atacama because of a phenomenon called rain shadow. Warm, humid air from the Amazon rain forest is blocked from reaching the Atacama英语试卷B第6页共15页by the Andes. That air is cooled by the cold mountain air and condenses into rain or snow in the mountains. As the air descends the west side of the mountains, it warms up and retains its moisture, preventing it from falling to the ground. Hence the Andes Mountains have the unusual effect of causing extreme moisture in the Amazon River basin at the same time that they cause extreme dryness on the other side of the mountain. Interestingly, the driest and wettest places on Earth are nearly adjacent to each other.1.The word consecutive in the passage is closest in meaning to ________.A.alternateB.annualC.successiveD.proximate2.In stating that some deserts are traversed by their own permanent rivers, theauthor means that ________.A.some deserts are flooded by rivers.B.rivers cross some deserts.C.some deserts cause their rivers to dry upD.rivers flow around some deserts3.Why does the author mention potential evaportranspiration? ________.A.To explain how salt forms in dried lake beds.B.To note the most important condition for creating a desert.C.To show how plants aid in causing evaporation.D.To contrast it with normal evaporation.4.Look at the four capitalized and underlined letters A, B, C and D that indicatewhere the following sentence could be added to the passage.A comparison of two of the largest deserts illustrates this phenomenon.Where would the sentence best fit? ________.5.The author’s description of the Atacama Desert mentions all of the followingexcept ________A.It is located between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes Mountains.B.The air lacks water vapor.C.Rain-shadow causes extreme dryness.D.Violent storms occasionally occur.Passage TwoQuestions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage.Urban Heat IslandsCities are usually warmer than their surrounding suburban and rural areas, often by as much as ten degrees Fahrenheit or six degrees Celsius. Scientists attribute this to the urban heat island effect, by which several characteristics of urban areas combine to elevate artificially the ambient temperature. The main cause of urban heat islands is architectural; the high buildings in city centers expose numerous surfaces that reflect and absorb sunlight. The reflected英语试卷B第7页共15页light hits other buildings and cannot escape into the surrounding air. The absorbed light, mostly by the dark materials covering the outside of buildings, heats up the buildings themselves. These materials, such as concrete and asphalt, have greater thermal conductivity and reflective ability than do materials used in rural or suburban construction. This tendency of heat to be trapped between and near buildings is called the canyon effect. Another impact of tall buildings is that they block the wind, which normally blows hot air away and cools the remaining air. Also contributing to this heat retention is the absence of evapotranspiration, the loss of water by evaporation from the ground and from the leaves of plants. This phenomenon is blunted in urban locales due to the paucity of vegetation and standing water, both of which have cooling effects.People also play a role in creating urban heat islands. The population density in cities translates into more human heat-generating processes and technology, such as automobiles, buses, and trains, air conditioning units, and factory production. All of these activities result in air pollution, which leads to the greenhouse effect, in which hot air on the ground cannot escape through the air above it because of polluting particles in the atmosphere. The influence of the heat island effect seems to be greater at night. The ground and other surfaces lose heat at night by a process of radiation into the air above. But in cities, this upward radiation is blocked by the tall buildings, tending to hold the heat at the level where people live and where temperatures are measured.Because almost half of the world’s population lives in urban areas, the urban heat island effect can influence the lives of more than three billion people. Thus it is closely studied by demographers and meteorologists. Thousands die in heat waves every year, and urban heat islands increase the severity and duration of those waves. Nighttime on urban heat islands provides no relief since urban nights do not enjoy the same cool-down that occurs in areas outside the cities.Another adverse consequence of urban heat islands is that more energy is needed to power air conditioning and refrigeration. One study concluded that the heat island effect costs the city of Los Angeles about $100 million per year in increased energy consumption. Local weather conditions can also be affected, for example, by altered wind patterns, more clouds and fog, greater pollution, more lightening , and more rain. One strategy for mitigating the impact of heat island effects is to use construction materials in houses, pavements, and highways that reflect, not absorb, the sunlight. Another method is to cultivate more vegetation like many city dwellers do on the roofs of their apartment buildings and offices. Some controversy exists over whether urban heat islands contribute to global warming. One school of thought stresses that no evidence has been found that the effect is any more than a local one, as the long-term upward trend in temperatures is about the same in both urban and non-urban areas. This view gained support from a 2004 study comparing a city’s temperatures on clam nights with those on windy nights. No difference was found in temperatures even though the urban-heat island英语试卷B第8页共15页theory would predict that windy nights should be cooler because the wind should blow the hot air away from the city. The conclusion of the study was that global temperatures have risen as much on windy nights as on calm nights, showing that overall global warming is not caused by urban development. Those with a dissenting view tend to be those who are skeptical of the reality of global warming. They contend that urban heat islands account for nearly all the warming recorded by land-based instruments. But there have no scientific studies substantiating this minority view.6.According to paragraph 2, all of the following are effects of tall buildings except________.A.the canyon effectB.the blockage of the windC.the absorption of sunlightD.the cooling of surrounding air7.Which of the following best expresses the essential information in theunderlined and bold-typed sentence in paragraph 2 ?A.Heat causes concrete and asphalt to expand, raising the ambient temperature.B.Materials used to build cities retain more heat than materials used innon-urban areas.C.Rural and suburban areas are hotter than cities because there are no tallbuildings to block the sunlight.D.Urban buildings are made of light-colored materials that reflect thesunlight up into the atmosphere.8.All of the following factors contribute to the heat island effect except ________.A.air conditionersB.tall buildingsC.vegetationD.population9.According to the passage, which of the following is true about the negativeeffects of urban heat islands? ________.A.Heat waves become longer and strongerB.Weather conditions change globallyC.Energy supplies decreaseD.People move out of the city to avoid heat waves10.The word dissenting in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to ________.A.approvingB.opposingC.prevailingD.agreeing英语试卷B第9页共15页Passage ThreeQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage.Virtually everything astronomers know about objects outside the solar system is based on the detection of photons-quanta of electromagnetic radiation. Yet there is another form of radiation that permeates the universe: neutrinos. With (as its name implies) no electric charge, and negligible mass, the neutrino interacts with other particles so rarely that a neutrino can cross the entire universe, even traversing substantial aggregations of matter, without being absorbed or even deflected. Neutrinos can thus escape from regions of space where light and other kinds of electromagnetic radiation are blocked by matter. Furthermore, neutrinos carry with them information about the site and circumstances of their production: therefore, the detection of cosmic neutrinos could provide new information about a wide variety of cosmic phenomena and about the history of the universe. But how can scientists detect a particle that interacts so infrequently with other matter? Twenty-five years passed between Pauli’s hypothesis that the neutrino existed and its actual detection: since then virtually all research with neutrinos has been with neutrinos created artificially in large particle accelerators and studied under neutrino microscopes. But a neutrino telescope, capable of detecting cosmic neutrinos, is difficult to construct. No apparatus can detect neutrinos unless it is extremely massive, because great mass is synonymous with huge numbers of nucleons (neutrons and protons), and the more massive the detector, the greater the probability of one of its nucleon’s reacting with a neutrino. In addition, the apparatus must be sufficiently shielded from the interfering effects of other particles.Fortunately, a group of astrophysicists has proposed a means of detecting cosmic neutrinos by harnessing the mass of the ocean. Named DUMAND, for Deep Underwater Muon and Neutrino Detector, the project calls for placing an array of light sensors at a depth of five kilometers under the ocean surface. The detecting medium is the seawater itself: when a neutrino interacts with a particle in an atom of seawater, the result is a cascade of electrically charged particles and a flash of light that can be detected by the sensors. The five kilometers of seawater above the sensors will shield them from the interfering effects of other high-energy particles raining down through the atmosphere. The strongest motivation for the DUMAND project is that it will exploit an important source of information about the universe. The extension of astronomy from visible light to radio waves to x-rays and gamma rays never failed to lead to the discovery of unusual objects such as radio galaxies, quasars, and pulsars. Each of these discoveries cameas a surprise. Neutrino astronomy will doubtless bring its own share of surprises.11.Which might be the most appropriate title for the passage? ________.A.At the Threshold of Neutrino AstronomyB.Neutrinos and the History of the UniverseC.The Creation and Study of NeutrinosD.The DUMAND System and How It Works英语试卷B第10页共15页12.One advantage that neutrinos have for studies in astronomy is that they ________.A.have been detected for 25 years.B.possess a variable electric chargeC.are usually extremely massiveD.record information about their own origin13.The neutrinos are hard to detect most probably because of ________.A.their ability to escape from different regions of spaceB.their inability to penetrate dense matterC.the similarity of their structure to that of nucleonsD.the infrequency of their interaction with other matter14.The ocean may be used to detect neutrinos for the following reasons EXCEPTthat________.A.it can provide massive nucleonsB.it is like a huge detecting apparatusC.it enables neutrinos to move more activelyD.it can keep away the interference of other particles15.In the last paragraph, the author describes the development of astronomy inorder to ________.A.suggest the potential discovery of celestial bodies by means of neutrinoastronomyB.illustrate the importance of surprises in making astronomic discoveriesC.demonstrate the effectiveness of the DUMAND apparatus in detectingneutrinos some cosmic phenomena that neutrino astronomy will illuminatePassage FourQuestions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage. There is never a good time to have a heart attack , but the wise person afflicted with clogging arteries might want to be especially careful in future to avoid stress and watch the diet as August rolls around. The NHS, it is revealed today, has its very own black Wednesday, when death rates go up by an average of 6%, and there is a somewhat disturbing underlying cause ---the arrival on the wards of a new intake of junior doctors. On the first Wednesday in August every year, a freshly qualified set of junior doctors arrives on the wards. Pristine and eager and brilliant they no doubt are, but while they are finding their way around something unexplained and slightly perplexing appears to happen.Researchers from the Dr. Foster unit and the department of acute medicine at Imperial College London say there has been a suspicion for years that more people die on the day the new doctors arrive, but for the first time they have established that it happens --- although they say the rise in deaths is very small. They do not blame the doctors’ inexperience or confusion in the hospital and say it is also possible that only the severest cases are admitted in that week, because of英语试卷B第11页共15页the changeover.Their study has international implications, the researchers say. “a similar effect has been recorded in the US (known as the ‘July phenomenon’),” they write in their paper. But previous studies have looked only at a few hospitals. The Imperial study is far bigger, examining carefully data from nearly 300,000 patients in 175 hospital trusts. It compared death rates on the first Wednesday in August with the last Wednesday in July. He difference was most marked in medical cases, where there was an 8% increase in deaths; there was no difference surgical cases.“We wanted to find out whether mortality rates changed on the first Wednesday in August, when junior doctors take up their new posts,” said senior author Paul Aylin. “What we have found looks like an interesting pattern and we would now like to look at this in more detail to find out what might be causing the increase.”“Our study does not mean that people should avoid going into hospital that wee,. This is a relatively small difference in mortality rates, and the numbers of excess deaths are very low. It’s too early to say what might be causing it.”Shree Datta, chair of the Briti sh Medical Association’s junior doctor committee, said the study had to be judged alongside others looking at mortality rates before and after junior doctors start their new jobs, but added: “ Clearly even a small increase in death rates is of great concern and we need further research to see whether this is a general effect or an anomaly.”16.According to the passage, August is the time when ________.A.people are most stressed by workB.most heart attack cases happenC.people are easily afflicted with clogging arteriesD.junior doctors begin working in the hospitals17.What is the researchers’attitude towards he idea that more people die on theday the new doctors arrive? ________.A.PerplexedB.AffirmativeC.SuspiciousD.Opposed18.Which of the following is taken by the researchers as a possible cause of therise in deaths in the first week of August? ________.A.The qualifications of the junior doctorsB.The mismanagement of the hospitalsC.The graveness of the patients’ diseasesD.The hospitals’ shortage of workforce19.What is true about the hospitals in the United States? ________.A.The “July phenomenon ” is restricted to a few hospitalsB.Junior doctors usually arrive at the hospitals in JulyC.Only a few of them were involved in the Imperial studyD.The Imperial study has widespread influence on them英语试卷B第12页共15页20.According to Shree Datta, more research is needed to ________.A.find out how common such rise in death rates isB.find out the real causes of such rise in death ratesC.prove that even small rise in death rates is significantD.prove that the rise in death rates is of minor importancePart III Translation (20 points)Directions: Translate the following text into English. Reading comprehension (40 points)Directions: Read the passages and answer following questions. You get 30 minutes for this part. There are FOUR passages and 20 questions. Pleasewrite your answers on the ANSWER SHEET.Questions 1-5 are based on Passage 1.We have a crisis on our hands. You mean global warming? The world economy? No, the decline of reading. People are just not doing it anymore, especially the young. Who’s responsible? Actually, it’s more like, what is responsible? The Internet, ofcourse, and everything that comes with it --- Facebook, Twitter. You can write your own list. There’s been a warning about the imminent death of literate civilization for a long time. In the 20th century, first it was the movies, then radio, then television that seemed to spell doom for the written world. None did. Reading survived; in fact it not only survived, it has flourished. The world is more literate than ever before --- thereare more and more readers, and more and more books. The fact that we often get our reading material online today is not something we should worry over. The electronic and digital revolution of the last two decades has arguably shown the way forward for reading and for writing. Take the arrival of e-book readers as an example. Devices like Kindle make reading more convenient and are a lot more environmentally friendly than the traditional paper book.As technology makes new ways of writing possible, new ways of reading are possible. Interconnectivity allows for the possibility of a reading experience that was barely imaginable before. Where traditional books had to make do with photographs and illustrations, an e-book can provide readers with an unlimited number of links: to texts, pictures, and videos. In the future, the way people write novels, history, and philosophy will resemble nothing seen in the past.On the other hand, there is the danger of trivialization. One Twitter group is offering its followers single-sentence-long “digests” of the great novels. War and Peace in a sentence? You must be joking. We should fear the fragmentation of reading. There is the danger that the high-speed connectivity of the Internet will reduce our attention span --- that we will be incapable of reading anything of length or which requires deep concentration. In such a fast-changing world, in which reality seems to be remade each day, we need the ability to focus and understand what is happening to us. This has always been the function of literature and we should be careful not to let it disappear. Our society needs to be able to imagine the possibility of someone utterly in tune with modern technology but able to make sense of a dynamic, confusing world. In the 15th century, Johanne s Guttenberg’s invention of the printing press in Europe had a huge impact on civilization. Once upon a time the physical book was a challenging thing. We should remember this before we assume that technology is out to destroy traditional culture.1.Which of the following paragraphs briefly reviews the historical challenges for reading?A.Paragraph One.B.Paragraph Two.C.Paragraph Three.D.Paragraph Four.2. The following are all cited as advantages of e-books EXCEPT.A.multimodal contentB.environmental friendlinessC.convenience for readersD.imaginative design3.Which of the following can best describe how the author feels towardsingle-sentence-long novels?A.Ironic.B.Worried.C.Sarcastic.D.Doubtful.4.According to the passage, people need knowledge of modern technology andto survive in the fast-changing society.A.good judgmentB.high sensitivityC.good imaginationD.the ability to focus5.What is the main idea of the passage?A.Technology pushes the way forward for reading and writing.B.Interconnectivity is a feature of new reading experience.C.Technology is an opportunity and a challenge for traditional reading.D.Technology offers a greater variety of reading practice.Questions 6-10 are based on Passage 2.These days lots of young Japanese do omiai, literally, “meet and look.” Many of them do so willingly. In today’s prosperous and increasingly conservative Japan, the traditional omiai kekkon, or arranged marriage, is thriving. But there is a difference. In the original omiai, the young Japanese couldn’t reject the partner chosen by his parents and their middleman. After World War II, many Japanese abandoned the arranged marriage as part of their rush to adopt the more democratic ways of their American conquerors. The Western ren’ai kekkon, or love marriage, became popular; Japanese began picking their own mates by dating and falling in love. But the Western way was often found wanting in an important respect: it didn’t necessarily produce a partner of the right economic, social, and educational qualifications. “Today’s young people are quite calculating,” says Chieko Akiyama, a social commentator. What seems to be happening now is a repetition of a familiar process in the country’s history, the “Japanization” of an adopted foreign practice. The Western ideal of marrying for love is accommodated in a new omiai in which both parties are free to reject the match. “Omiai is evolving into a sort of stylized introduction,” Mrs. Akiyama says. Many young Japanese now date in their early twenties, but with no thought of marriage. When they reach the age --- in the middle twenties for women, the late twenties for man --- they increasingly turn to omiai. Some studies suggest that as many as 40% of marriages each year are omiai kekkon. It’s hard to be sure, say those who study the matter, because many Japanese couples, when polled, described their marriage as a love match even if it was arranged. These days, doing omiai often means going to a computer matching service rather than to a nakodo. The nakodo of tradition was an old woman who knew all the kids in the neighborhood and went around trying to pair them off by speaking to their parents;a successful math would bring her a wedding invitation and a gift of money. But Japanese today find it’s less awkward to reject a proposed partner if the nakodo is a computer.Japan has about five hundred computer matching services. Some big companies, including Mitsubishi, run one for their employees. At a typical commercial service, an applicant pays $80 to $125 to have his or her personal data stored in the computer fortwo years and $200 or so more if a marriage results. The stored information includes some obvious items, like education and hobbies, and some not-so-obvious ones, like whether a person is the oldest child. (First sons, and to some extent first daughters, face an obligation of caring for elderly parents.)6. According to the passage, today’s young Japanese prefer.A. a traditional arranged marriageB. a new type of arranged marriageC. a Western love marriageD. a more Westernized love marriage7.Which of the following statements is CORRECT?A. A Western love marriage tends to miss some Japanese values.B.Less attention is paid to the partner’s qualification in arranged marriages.C.Young Japanese would often calculate their partner’s wealth.D. A new arranged marriage is a repetition of the older type.8. According to the passage, the figure 40% (Paragraph Five) is uncertain because.A.there has been a big increase in the number of arranged marriagesB.Western love marriage still remains popular among young JapaneseC.young Japanese start dating very early in their life in a Western traditionD.the tendency for arranged marriages could be stronger than is indicated9.One of the big differences between a traditional nakodo and its contemporaryversion lies in the way.A.wedding gifts are presentedB. a proposed partner is refusedC.formalities are arrangedD.the middleman/woman is chosen10.What is the purpose of the last paragraph?A.To tell the differences between an old and modern nakodo.B.To provide some example for the traditional nakodo.C.To offer more details of the computerized nakodo.D.To sum up the main ideas and provide a conclusion.Questions 11-15 are based on Passage 3.Virtually everything astronomers known about objects outside the solar system is based on the detection of photons-quanta of electromagnetic radiation. Yet there is another form of radiation that permeates the universe: neutrinos (中微子). Twenty-five years passed between Pauli’s hypothesis that the neutrino existed and its actual detection: since then virtually all research with neutrinos has been withneutrinos created artificially in large particle accelerators and studied under neutrino microscopes. The extension of astronomy from visible light to radio waves to x-rays and gamma rays never failed to lead to the discovery of unusual objects such as radio galaxies, quasars(类星体) and pulsars (脉冲星). Each of these discoveries came as a surprise. Neutrino astronomy will doubtless bring its own share of surprises.11.Which might be the most appropriate title of the passage?A.At the Threshold of Neutrino Astronomy.B.Neutrinos and the History of the Universe.C.The Creation and the Study of Neutrinos.D.The DUMAND System and How It Works.12.One advantage that neutrinos have for studies in astronomy is that they______________.A.have been detected for 25 yearsB.possess a variable electric chargeC.are usually extremely massiveD.record information about their own origin13.The neutrinos are hard to detect most probably because of ______________.A.their ability to escape from different regions of spaceB.their inability to penetrate dense matterC.the similarity of their structure to that of nucleonsD.the infrequency of their interaction with other matter14.The ocean may be used to detect neutrinos for the following reasons EXCEPT that______________.A.it can provide massive nucleonsB.it is like a huge detecting apparatusC.it enables neutrinos to move more activelyD.it can keep away the interference of other particles15.In the last paragraph, the author describes the development of astronomy in orderto ______________.A.suggest the potential discovery of celestial bodies by means of neutrinoastronomyB.illustrate the importance of surprises in making astronomic discoveriesC.demonstrate the effectiveness of the DUMAND apparatus in detectingneutrinos some cosmic phenomena that neutrino astronomy will illuminate Questions 16-20 are based on Passage 4.People do not have secret trolleys at the supermarket, so how can it be a violation of their privacy if a grocer sells their purchasing habits to a marketing firm? If they walk around in public view, what harm can cameras recording their movements cause?A company is paying them to do a job, so why should it not read their e-mails when they are at work? How, what and why, indeed. Yet, in all these situations, most people feel a sense of unease. The technology for gathering, storing, manipulating and sharing information has become part of the scenery, but there is little guidance on how to resolve the conflicts created by all the personal data now washing around.A group of computer scientists at Stanford University, led by John Mitchell, has started to address the problem in a novel way. Instead of relying on rigid (and easily programmable) codes of what is and is not acceptable, Dr. Mitchell and his colleagues Adam Barth and Anupam Datta have turned to a philosophical theory called contextual integrity. This theory acknowledges that people do not require complete privacy. They will happily share information with others as long as certain social norms are met. Only when these norms are contravened ─ for example, when your psychiatrist tells the personnel department all about your consultation ─has your privacy been invaded. The team think contextual integrity can be used to express the conventions and laws surrounding privacy in the formal vernacular of a computer language.Contextual integrity, which was developed by Helen Nissenbaum of New York University, relies on four classes of variable. These are the context of a flow of information, the capacities in which the individuals sending and receiving the information are acting, the types of information involved, and what she calls “the princip le of transmission”.It is the fourth of these variables that describes the basis on which information flows. Someone might, for example, receive information under the terms of a commercial exchange, or because he deserves it, or because someone chose to share it with him, or because it came to him as a legal right, or because he promised to keep it secret. These are all examples of transmission principles.Dr. Nissenbaum has been working with Mr. Barth to turn these wordy descriptions of the variables of contextual integrity into formal expressions that can be incorporated into computer programs. The tool Mr. Barth is employing to effect this transition is linear temporal logic, a system of mathematical logic that can express detailed constraints on the past and the future.Linear temporal logic is an established discipline. It is, for example, used to test safety-critical systems, such as aeroplane flight controls. The main difference between computer programs based on linear temporal logic and those using other sorts of programming language is that the former describe how the world ought to be, whereasthe latter list specific instructions for the computer to carry out in order to achieve a particular end. The former say something like: “If you need milk, you ought eventually to arrive at the shop.” The latter might say: “Check the refrigerator. If there is no milk, get in your car. Start driving. Turn left at the corner. Park. Walk into the shop.”Dr. Mitchell and his team have already written logical formulae that they believe to express a number of American privacy laws, including those covering health care, financial institutions and children’s activities online. The principles of transmi ssion can be expressed in logical terms by using concepts such as “previously” and “eventually” as a type of mathematical operator. (They are thus acting as the equivalents of the “plus”, “minus”, “multiply” and “divide” signs in that more familiar system of logic known as arithmetic.) For example, the Gramm-Leach-Bliley act states that “a financial institution may not disclose personal information, unless such financial institution provides or has provided to the consumer a notice. “This is expressed asIF send (financial-institution, third-party, personal-information)THEN PREVIOUSLY send (financial-institution, consumer, notification) OREVENTUALLY send (financial-institution, consumer, notification) According to Dr. Nissenbaum, applying contextual integrity to questions ofprivacy not only results in better handling of those questions, but also helps to pinpoint why new methods of gathering information provoke indignation. In a word, where the ability to handle data is rapidly outpacing agreement about how that ability should be used, this alone is surely reason to study it.16.The author suggests at the beginning that __________.A.the computer technology can be used to protect people’s privacy in publicB.the technology of computing information may interfere with people’sprivacyC.personal data should not be released to the public for commercial useD.the computer technology is to blame for intruding upon people’s privacy17.The theory of contextual integrity __________.A.denies people’s legal rights to require complete privacyB.maintain that people of integrity do not require complete privacyC.helps to protect people’s privacy from being invadedD.is applied to turn descriptions of privacy issues into a computer language18.Which of the following is NOT true about the transmission principles?A.They provide the basis of information flows.B.They explain why a person may receive information.C.They are one of the variables constituting the theory of contextual integrity.D.They determine the capacities of individuals sending and receivinginformation.19.The author in the end of the passage __________ the idea of applying contextualintegrity to issues concerning privacy.A.approves ofB.disagrees withC.is critical ofD.is indifferent to20.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A.Contextual Integrity in PrivacyB.The Variables of PrivacyC.The Logic of PrivacyD.Privacy in Contextual IntegrityPart III. With two childre n at top London schools and a house英语试卷B 第4页共11页in the West End, he and his wife Jackie, a top divorce lawyer, led an often hectic social life involving a great deal of entertaining of clients and trips to the opera and theatre. But the couple did not live beyond their means and from the outside one would have said that they were extremely fortunate.Surprisingly, perhaps, the background of both Lewis and Jackie was anything but privileged, both having beenbrought up on rough inner-city council estates where most children could expect to end up unemployed. Today he describes how at the age of 41 he felt so haunted by life's unfairness that he felt he could no longer justify what he described as his "absurdly inflated pay cheque ”. Backed by Jackie, his wife, Lewis applied for a post working as the financial manager for a well-known charity that helped disadvantaged children. Studies since then suggest that marriage could add as much as seven years to a man ' s life an to a woman ' s. The effect holds for all causes of death, whether illness, acceindt or self-harm.Even if the odds are stacked against you, marriage can more than compensate. Linda Waite of the University of Chicago has found that a married older man with heart disease can expect to live nearly four years longer than an unmarried man with a healthy heart. Likewise, a married man who smokes more than a pack a day is likely to live as long as a divorced man who doesn ' t There ' s a flip side, however, as partners are more likely to become ill or die in the couple of years following their spouse ' s death, and caring for a spouse with mental disorder can leave you with some of the same severe problems. Even so, the odds favor marriage. In a 30-year study of more than 10,000 people, Nicholas Christakis of Harvard Medical School describes how all kinds of social networks have similar effects. So how does it work? The effects are complex, affected by socio-economic factors, healthservice provision, emotional support and other more physiological mechanisms. For example, social contact can boost development of the brain and immune system, leading to better health and less chance of depression later in life. People in supportive relationships may handle stress better. Then there are the psychological benefits of a supportive partner.A life partner, children and good friends are all recommended if you aim to live to 100. The ultimate social network is still being mapped out, but Christakis says: “ People are interconn so their health is interconnected. ”6 William Farr ' s study and othuedriesst show that ___________ .A. social life provides an effective cure for illnessB. being sociable helps improve one ' s quality of lifeC. women benefit more than men from marriageD. marriage contributes a great deal to longevity英语试卷B 第 6 页共11 页7. It can be inferred from the context that the “ flip side ” (Line 4, Para. 2) refers to ________A. the disadvantages of being marriedB. the emotional problems arising from marriageC. the responsibility of taking care of one ' s familyD. the consequence of a broken marriage9. What does the author say about social networks?A. They have effects similar to those of a marriage.B. They help develop people ' s community spirit.C. They provide timely support for those in need.D. They help relieve people of their life ' s burdens.10. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A. It ' s important that we develop a social network when young.B. This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.During the hours when you labor through your work you may sa y that they are “hot ”. That 's true. The time of the day when you feel energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at this peak. For some people the peak comes during the morning. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovere d why this is so, but it leads to such familiar words: “Get up, John You' ll be late for work again! ”The possible explanation to the trouble is that he is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to英语试卷B 第8 页共11 页do. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won ' t change your cycle, but you ' ll get up steam and work better at your low point.Get off to a slow start, which saves your energy. Dr. Kleitman thinks that _____________ .A. getting up late in the morning means lazinessB. if your energy peak is in the evening, you might like getting up earlyC. people can do nothing about energy cycleD. spending some time yawning and stretching helps to keep you energetic17. According to the passage, family quarrels may result from __________ .A. the same energy cycle of family membersB. unawareness of different energy cyclesC. failing to get up early in the morningD. knowledge of energy cycle18. If you are used to getting up late in the morning, you are likely to be most energeticA. in the morningB. at noonC. in the afternoonD. in the evening19. What ' s the likely relationship between energy cycle and body temperature?A. Energy cycle and body temperature are the same things.B. The higher your temperature is, the less energetic you are.C. Please write your answers on the ANSWER SHEET.Passage OneOnly three years ago 41-year-old Lewis Winfield had a high-powered job in an investment bank, earning hundreds of thousands a year. With two children at top London schools and a housein the West End, he and his wife Jackie, a top divorce lawyer, led an often hectic social life involving a great deal of entertaining of clients and trips to the opera and theatre. After a series of lengthy interviews, to his astonishment, Lewis was offered the job and today he can be found behind a desk in an office, which, while not dilapidated, is nothing like the impressive surroundings he was used to working in.“I'm paid a fraction of what I used to get, but it’s the best move I’ve ever made in my life,” Lewis tells anyone willing to listen. “Whereas at the bank I always had the uneasy feeling my money was completely undeserved, here I’m certain I’m doing something worthwhile --- I know where every penny the charity brings in goes, that’s my job. We get reports on the families we help and the work we do m akes a real difference in children’s lives. I feel comfortable with who I am. It’s a huge relief.”Asked what his regrets are for the life he left behind, Lewis admits to missing the excitement that working in an investment bank generates. “There was a definite buzz around. The effect holds for all causes of death, whether illness, accid ent or self-harm.Even if the odds are stacked against you, marriage can more than compensate. The ultimate social network is still being mapped out, but Christakis says: “People are interconnected, so their health is interconnected.”6William Farr’s study and other st udies show that _________.A.social life provides an effective cure for illnessB.being sociable helps improve one’s quality of lifeC.women benefit more than men from marriageD.marriage contributes a great deal to longevity7.Linda Waite’s studies support the idea that _________.A.older men should quit smoking to stay healthyB.marriage can help make up for ill healthC.the married are happier than the unmarriedD.unmarried people are likely to suffer in later life8.It can be inferred from the context that the “flip side” (Line 4, Para. 2) refers to _________.A.the disadvantages of being marriedB.the emotional problems arising from marriageC.the responsibility of taking care of one’s familyD.the consequence of a broken marriage9.What does the author say about social networks?A.They have effects similar to those of a marriage.B.They help develop people’s community spirit.C.They provide timely support for those in need.D.They help relieve people of their life’s burdens.10.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A.It’s important that we develop a social network when young.B.Getting a divorce means risking a reduced life span.C.To stay healthy, one should have a proper social network.D.We should share our social networks with each other.Passage ThreeAirline companies are responsible for transporting your luggage. This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that they are “hot”. That’s true. The time of the day when you feel energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at this peak. For some people the peak comes during the morning. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar words: “Get u p, John! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the trouble is that he is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want todo. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy for your sharper hours.16.Dr. Kleitman thinks that ______________.A.getting up late in the morning means lazinessB.if your energy peak is in the evening, you might like getting up earlyC.people can do nothing about energy cycleD.spending some time yawning and stretching helps to keep you energetic17.According to the passage, family quarrels may result from ___________.A.the same energy cycle of family membersB.unawareness of different energy cyclesC.failing to get up early in the morningD.knowledge of energy cycle18.If you are used to getting up late in the morning, you are likely to be most energetic_________.A.in the morningB.at noonC.in the afternoonD.in the evening19.What’s the likely relationship between energy cycle and body temperature?A.Energy cycle and body temperature are the same things.B.The higher your temperature is, the less energetic you are.C.The higher your temperature is, the more energetic you are.D.There is no direct relation between them.20.Which of the following statements is not true?A.One can change his energy cycle once he makes up his mind.B.We still don’t know why people have differe nt energy cycles.C.Habit will help to make our life fit energy cycles better.D.If you rise earlier than usual, you will be more efficient at your low point in themorning.Part III: Translation (20 points)Direction: Translate the following text into English.
