e.g: - Do you think I can use your car for one day?- .A. I’m afraid not.B. No, you can’t.C. I won’t let you do that.D. Absolutely not.

因此选A。

I’d like/ love to, but…That’s a good idea, but…2.

e.g: - I am going to the City Hall, can you tell me how to get there, madam?- .A. No, you don’t knowB. I don’t know.C. Yes, you will.D. Sorry, I am new here too. But you can ask the policeman over there.

第2次作业一、阅读理解(本大题共100分,共5小题,每小题20分) 1.There is a widespread belief that people who get on in life may be successful not because they deserve it, but because of influentialfriends or the right background. Sometimes it may just be a comforting and harmless belief, while at the other extreme it can be very destructive. I once met a brilliant young engineer who worked in a chemical plant. Because of her knowledge and experience, she should have been promoted to Production Manager. Instead, the job went to a man who was totally unsuited for the post. Everyone knew that he only got it because he was politically acceptable to his superiors. This injustice demoralized the young engineer and many of her col leagues. Tt al so meant that the factory was much 1 ess efficient than i t could have been. All the same, we should not be pessimistic. More and more, the modern world depends on having people who are in the job because they are good enough, not just because their face fits. There is a story of a factory owner who sent for an engineer to see to a machine, which would not go. He examined it, then took out a hammer and tapped it, once. The machine started up immediately. When he presented his bill, the owner protested, "This can't be right! $100 just for tapping a machine with a hammer?z,The engineer wrote out a new bill: 〃For tapping a machine, $1; for knowing where to tap it, $99.〃(1).It is believed that some people have succeeded in life because•A.they feel superior to othersB.they are both influential and powerfulc.they have some special advantagesD.they have a poor background(2).The engineer at the chemical plant was not promoted because.A.it is more difficult for a woman to get a promotion than for her male colleaguesB.her boss did not think she had the right qual ifications for the jobc.the man who got his promotion was more experienced than she wasD.her bosses did not approve of her political views and opinions(3).The engineer who repaired the machine was right to charge $100 because.A.he was the only person who could find out what was wrong with itB.the factory owner could not have repaired it himselfc.he hit the machine to get it started againhe was charging for his knowledge and expert skills(4).The author" s attitude toward the widespread belief is.A.positiveB.negativec.neutralD.sympathetic(5).According to the passage, which of the following is NOT TRUE?A.Having influential friends or right background seems helpful sometimes.B.The engineer had good reason to overcharge the factory owner. Not al 1 those who are good in their jobs have the chance to be promoted.D.Those who are good in their job are still largely needed by the modern society.2.Tn the 1940s, urban Americans began a mass move to the suburbs in search of fresh air, elbow room and privacy. Suburbs began to sprawl out across the countryside, since most of those making the move were middle-class, they took with them the tax money the cities needed to maintain the neighborhood, in which they had lived. The people left in the cities were often those who were too old or too poor to move. Thus, many cities began to fall into disrepair. Crime began to soar, and public transportation was neglected. (Tn the past sixty years, San Franci sco is the only cityin the Uni ted States to have completed a new mass transit system.) Meanwhile, housing construction costs continued to rise higher and higher. Middle-class housing was allowed to decay, and little new housing was constructed.Eventually, many downtown areas existed for business only. During the day they would be filled with people working in the offices and at night they would be deserted. Given these circumstances, some business executives began asking, "Why bother with going downtown at al 1? Why not move the offices to the suburbs so that we can 1ive and work in the same area?” Gradually some of the larger companies began moving out of the cities, with the result that urban centers declined even further and the suburbs expanded still more. This movement of businesses to the suburbs is not confined to the United States. Businesses have also been moving to the suburbs in Stockholm, Sweden, in Bonn, Germany, and in Brussels, Belgium as well(1).What did the city lose when those people moved out to the suburbs?A.housescarsC.jobsD.tax money(2).What are not the resulting effects on cities when those people moved out?A.There were more crimes.B.Cities were in a bad condition.c.Only one mass transit system was completed.D.Some small companies moved in while larger ones moved out.(3).According to the passage, the suburbs.A.were deserted at nightB.were deserted at nightc.had a high construction costD.had some declined business center(4).Which of the fol lowing statements are True according to the passage?A.Some companies in the United States moved to Sweden, Germany and Belgium.B.Fresh air, spacious room and being away from others attract people to move to the suburbs.C.People wouldn't pay tax when they moved out of cities.D.The neighborhood should be maintained by old and poor people.(5).What is the best title for this passage?A.Urban RenewalB.Suburban Sprawlc.Effects of the move to the suburbsD.Development of the Suburbs3.Mountain climbers around the world dream about going up Mount Everest (珠穆朗玛峰). It is the highest mountain in the world. But many people who have climbed the mountain have left waste material that is harming the environment.A team of Americans is planning the largest clean-up effort ever on Mount Everest. They will make the risky trip up the mountain next month. The team of eight Americans will be guided by more than twenty Sherpas of Nepal (尼泊尔夏尔巴人). Their goal is to remove al 1 the trash (废物,垃圾)they see. They wi11 spend two months cleaning up the mountain by gathering oxygen bottles, fuel containers, batteries, drink cans, human waste and other kinds of trash. They arc expected to remove atleast three tons of trash in large bags.Team leader Robert Hoffman is making his fourth trip up the mountain. He says he hopes to bring Everest to the condition it was in before the first successful climb fifty years ago. He says he hopes the effort will influence other people to clean up the environment closer home.Human waste on Everest is a major concern. Between 1886 and 1914, Canada received over two million immigrants. The majority of them were from Eastern Europe. The government welcomed these people by offering them free farmland in the West. However, Canada immigration policy was not equal for Asian immigrants. The Canadian government passed two laws to prevent Chineseimmigration. In 1885, the Canadian government passed the first law to prevent Chinese immigration. The law forced every Chinese person entering Canada to pay a $50 entry fee. The government introduced this head tax to satisfy Caucasian(高加索人) laborers who felt that Chinese immigrants were competing for their jobs. The head tax was a burden for Chinese immigrants, but it did not prevent them fromcoming to Canada. For many of these poor Chinese laborers, they could earn more money there than in China. They were willing to borrow the money to pay for the overseas trip and the head tax. The Canadian government raised the head tax to $100 in 1900, then to $500 in 1903. The Canadian government passed its most restrictive immigration law in 1923. That year, the Chinese Immigration Act prevented all Chinese except officers, merchants, and students from entering Canada. The Act was the result of pressure from anti-Asian groups. These groups felt that the head tax was insufficient because Chinese laborers were still coming to Canada. The law effectively stopped Chineseimmigration from 1923 to 1947. During the 24-year period, only 44 Chinese entered Canada officially. There now are about 4 billion of us on earth. That could reach 6 billion by the end of the century and 11 billion in a further 75 years. Experts have long been concerned about such a growth. Where will we find the food, water, jobs, houses, school and health care for all these people?A major new study shows that the situation may be changing.A large and rapid drop in the world‟s birth rate has taken place during the past 10 years. Families generally are smaller now than they were a few years ago. It is happening in both developing and industrial nations.Researchers said they found a number of reasons for this. More men and women are waiting longer to get married and are using birth control devices and methods to prevent or delay pregnancy. More women are going to school or working at jobs away from home instead of having children. And more governments, especially in developing nations, now support family planning programs to reduce population grow.China is one of the nations that have made great progress in reducing its population growth. China has already cut its rate of population growth by about half since 1970.Each Chinese family is now urged to have no more than one child. And the hope is to reach a zero population growth with the total number of births equaling the total number of deaths by the year 2000.Several nations in Europe already have fewer births than deaths. My friend was waiting for me when my plane landed at Kennedy Airport at three o‟clock in the afternoon. The weather was very cold and it was snowing, but I was too excited to mind. From the airport, my friend and I took a taxi to my hotel. On the way, I saw the skyline of Manhattan for the first time and I stared in astonishment at the famous skyscrapers and their man-made beauty. My friend helped me unpack at the hotel and them left me because he had to go back to work. He promised to return the next day.Shortly after my friend had left, I went to a restaurant near the hotel to get something to eat. Because I couldn‟t speak a word of English, I couldn‟t tell the waiter what I wanted. I was very upset and started to make some gestures, but the waiter didn‟t understand me. Finally, I ordered the same thing the man at the next table was eating. After dinner, I started to walk along Broadway until I came to Times Square with its movie theatres, neon lights, and huge crowds of people.I did not feel tired, so I continued to walk around the city.I wanted to see everything on my first day. I knew it was impossible, but I wanted to try. When I returned to the hotel, I was exhausted, but I couldn‟t sleep because I kept hearing the fire and police sirens during the night. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice. (30 points)Passage 1When we see well, we do not think about our eyes very often. It is only when we cannot see perfectly that we realize how important our eyes are.People who are near-sighted can only see things that are very close to their eyes, Everything else seems blurry(=unclear). Many people who do a lot of work, such as writing, reading and sewing become near-sighted. Then people who are far-sighted suffer from just the opposite problem. They can see things that are far away, but they have difficulty in reading a book unless they hold it at arm’s length. If they want to do much reading ,they must get glasses, too.Other people do not see clearly because their eyes are not exactly the right shape. They have what is called astigmatism (散光). This, too, can be corrected by glasses. Some people’s eyes become cloudy because of cataracts (白内障).Long ago these people often became blind. Now, however, it is possible to operate on the cataracts and remove them.Having two good eyes is important for judging distances. Each eye sees things from a slightly different angle (角度). To prove this to yourself, look at an object our of one eye; then look at the same object out of your other eye. You will find the object’s relation to the background and other things around it has changed. The difference between these two different eye views helps us to judge how far away an object is. People who have only one eye cannot judge distance as people with two eyes.21. We should take good care of our eyes .—____C____A. only when we can see wellB. only when we cannot see perfectlyC. even if we can see wellD. only when we realize how important our eyes are22. When things far away seem indistinct(模糊不清) , one is probably .—____A____A. near-sightedB. far-sightedC. astigmaticD. suffering from cataracts23. Having two eyes instead of one is particularly useful for .—____D____A. seeing at nightB. seeing objects far awayC. looking over a wide areaD. judging distances25. People who suffer from astigmatism have .—____B____A. one eye bigger than the otherB. eyes that are not exactly the right shapeC. a difficulty that can be corrected by an operationD. an eye difficulty that cannot be corrected by glassesPassage 2In earliest times, men considered lightning to be one of the great mysteries (神秘的事物) of nature. Some ancient peoples believed that lightning and thunder were the weapons (武器) of the gods.
In reality, lightning is a flow of electricity formed high above the earth. A single flash of lightning 1.6 kilometres long has enough electricity to light one million light bulbs (灯泡). The American scientist and statesman, Benjamin Franklin, was the first to show the connection between electricity and lightning in 1752. In the same year he also built the first lightning rod (避雷针). This device (装置物) protects buildings from being damaged by lightning. Modern science has discovered that one stroke (闪击) of lightning has a voltage (电压) of more than 15 million volts (伏特). A flash of lightning between a cloud and the earth may be as long as 13 kilometers, and travel at a speed of 30 million meters per second. Scientists judge that there are about 2,000 million flashes of lightning per year. Lightning hits the Empire State Building in New York City 30 to 48 times a year. In the United States alone it kills an average (平均数) of one person every day. The safest place to be in case of an electrical storm is in a closed car. Outside, one should go to low ground and not get under tress. Also, one should stay out of water and away from metal fences. Inside a house, people should avoid open doorways and windows and not touch wires or metal things.
With lightning, it is better to be safe than sorry?26. People once thought lightning came from____B____.

As I came near to the gates I turned off the headlamps of the car so as to prevent the beam(光荣) from swinging(摇摆)in through the window and waking Jack, who shared the house with me. But needn’t have done so, I noticed that his light was still on, so he was awake anyway--- unless he had fallen asleep while reading. I put the car away and went up the steps, Then I opened the door quietly and went to Jack’s room. He was in bed awake but he didn’t even turn towards me.“What’s up, Jack?” I said.“For God’s sake(看在上帝面上), don’t make a noise,” he said. The way he spoke reminded me of someone in pain who is afraid to talk in case he does himself a serious injury(伤害).“Take your shoes off, Neville,” Jack said.I thought that he must be ill and that I had better humour (迁就)him to keep him happy, “There’s a snake here” he explained, “It’s asleep between the sheets. I was lying on my back reading when I saw it. I knew that moving was out of the question. I couldn’t have moved even if I’d wanted to .” I realized that he was serious. “I was relying on you to call a doctor as soon as you came home.” Jack went on.“It hasn’t bitten me yet but I daren’t do anything to upset it. It might wake up. I’m sick of this,” he said,“ I took it for granted that you would have come home an hour ago.”There was no time to argue or apologize for being late. According to the passage, Neville should have been home at ___B____.A. 7p. mB. 8p. mC. 9p. mD. midnightPassage 4Overhead bridges are found in many parts of Beijing, especially in places where traffic is very heavy and crossing the road is dangerous. The purpose of these bridges is to enable pedestrians (行人) to cross roads safely. Overhead bridges are used to very much the same way as zebra crossings. They are more efficient (效率高的) although less convenient because people have to climb up a long flight of steps. This is inconvenient especially to older people. When pedestrians use an overhead bridge, they do not hold up traffic. However, when they cross a busy road using a zebra crossing, traffic is held up. This is why the government has built many overhead bridges to help pedestrians and to keep traffic moving at the same time. The government of Beijing has spent a large amount of money on building these bridges. For their own safety, pedestrians should be encouraged to use them instead of risking (冒……危险) their lives by dashing across the road. Old people , however , may find it a little difficult climbing up and down the steps, but it is still much safer than walking across the road with all the danger of moving traffic.Overhead bridges serve a very useful purpose. Pedestrians, both old and young, should make it a habit to use them. This will prevent unnecessary accidents and loss of life.36. What is the advantage of overhead bridges mentioned in this passage? CA. Taller trucks can pass under them.B. Pedestrians can climb up and have a view of the city.C. They are safer for pedestrians and can keep traffic moving at the same time.D. They are easier and more convenient for the pedestrians.37. Why were overhead bridges built in Beijing? AA. Because they prevent traffic from being held up.B. Because they provide an easy way for the drivers to cross the road.C. Because they save money for the government.D. Because they save time for the pedestrians.38. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? DA. Overhead bridges are found in every part of Beijing.B. Overhead bridges are only found in the centre of Beijing.C. To build overhead bridges is the business of the government.Passage 5The evidence for harmony may not be obvious in some families. But it seems that four out of five young people now get on with their parents, which is the opposite of the popularly-held image (形象) of unhappy teenagers locked in their room after endless family quarrels. An important new study into teenage attitudes surprisingly shows that their family life is more harmonious than it had ever been in the past. “We were surprised by just how positive (肯定的) today‘s young people seem to be about their families,” said one number of the research team. “They’re expected to be rebellious (叛逆的) and selfish but actually they have other things on their minds:they want a car and material goods, and they worry about whether school is serving them well. There‘s more negotiation (商议) and discussion between parents and children, and children expect to take part in the family decision-making process. They don’t want to rock the boat (捣乱)。
