Without any hesitation, I chose to major in biomedical engineering in its Department of Electrical Engineering. As brain waves are extremely weak signals, only from tens to hundreds microvolt, the whole system, including the filter network, had to meet extremely stringent standards. After painstaking efforts, I successfully set up the filter network.After that, professor Cheng assigned me to perfect the clinical EEG software in recognition of mycomputer skills. In a Windows-based EEG review and analysis software system, I integrated various functions of automatic and manual data scrolling, annotation, grouping, montage, block marking, data discarding and transferring into diskette, filter design and filtering, compress spectrum array, brain electrical activity map, power spectrum estimation, twelve quantity EEG analysis and statistics. This cleared away a major hassle for doctors working in the hospitals. The software system also adopts background data loading and re-sampling of data while displaying to speed up the scrolling process andreduce the doctors’ waiting time.Through this project, I was solidly trained in independent research, much more so than most of myclassmates.4. Extracurricular activitiesI was a good student not just because I studied well but also because I actively involved myself in a variety of activities. In these activities, I not only honed my leadership and communication skills but also acquired a pioneering spirit and the ability to do teamwork.For much of my undergraduate studies, I served as a member of the student union council. In 1995 and 1996, I was elected the monitor of my class. Under my leadership, my class was chosen “A Class of Good Academic Atmosphere”, a designation given to only the best gro up of students. Why I decide to pursue my study abroad?Although studying in Tsinghua University has solidly grounded me for an engineering career, I have for long felt the urgency and responsibility to study abroad. From my personal experience, I realize, frankly speaking, that China’s biomedical engineering is not yet developed enough. I remember that, in September 1997 when I went to Beijing Recovery Center for “social investigation”, I found all the advanced recovery and nurse appliances displayed and used there were made abroad and the expenses were too high for ordinary people. This always brings patients suffering because the nurses have to rub the electrode heavily on their scalp for about half an hour for ideal location. This system not only solves the old problem, but also sets up a ne w detecting function for brain’s cognitionability.From these and other things, I know that the United State has the advanced technology and thus the original ideas, but China has quality researchers like me who can learn to do as well. From 1991 to 1993, my mother taught Chinese at Wittenberg University, Ohio and Indiana University at Bloomington. She encouraged me to apply for admission to advanced programs in the U.S.I graduated from high school in 1988, and received the highest scores in my school at the National Entrance Examination for Universities. This made me an “Honor Student” at the national level. Upon acceptance to Beijing Language and Culture University, my major became English, with minors in linguistics, French and computer science. I was awarded consecutive scholarships for all four years in college. During my college years, I became more and more interestedin linguistics. My senior year was largely devoted to topics in linguistics, and my required thesis work focused on the influence of cultural and educational factors upon the Chinese and English languages.After college, Beijing Science Technology University employed me. For the first year and a half I was assigned to a project aimed at creating improved computer program for idiomatic English-Chinese Chinese-English translations. This project proved me with considerable experience linguistics, and further improved my understanding of the subtleties of both English and Chinese.Since the project completion, I have been teaching intensive English courses at Beijing Science and Technology University. Since July of 1993, I have taught English listening comprehension at Beijing Language and Culture University. The latter classes are part of a program that provides adult Chinese professionals with opportunity to improve their English.My interest in linguistics is initially based on my desire to better comprehend the English language, and, in the process, learn more about my own language. China is now opening and engaging in ever expanding cultural and financial relations with the English-speaking countries of the West. It has struck me, as it may have occurred to many of my compatriots that negotiations to bring about these new and improved relations sometimes break down because of mutual ignorance about each other’s languages. I am aware that this has been a popular problem for study, among Americans engaging in business and other fields, but I am not aware of any serious attempt to research this problem from a Chinese point of view.Through my work in the U.S., I would hope to contribute to a betterunderstanding of the problems inherent in the deep differences between the two languages.I recognize that a thesis project in most graduate schools is chosen after on has studied in various programs in a department and after extensive discussion with one’s professors.
